    Ichnusa, the Sardinian beer company, currently owned by Heineken and famous in Italy above all for its 'non filtrata (unfiltered)', has its odd name due to the ancient Greeks, in fact the island was known in those ancient times for the its foot shape and was called 'sandaliotis' (from sandalion, sandal) or 'ichnousa' (from ichnos, human step), although the island had a scarce greek presence this name has remained until today

    I really enjoy hearing the different interpretations of these pronunciations. Pronunciation has always been the most difficult part of learning Italian for me and I really don't know if I'll ever get it right on any consistent basis. It's fascinating how our native language wires our brains in a certain way.

    That's a very nice video. :-) Are there any other collaboration videos made on other Easy Languages channels?
    I had already heard on the Easy German Podcast that Manuel, Janusz and Cari are/were at an Easy Languages conference. Great to see them here again. Thanks Manuel for clarifying for us Germans that it's "die Nutella" ;-)

    • @giovannimoriggi5833
      @giovannimoriggi5833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nutella is feminine because is intended as a cream, the Nutella cream, and cream is feminine gender in italian (that's our rule to name a proper name by implying the nature of the object). For example: Ferrero is "la Ferrero" because is intended as company (that's feminine gender).
      If cream is masculine in german language, you should use masculine.

    I never knew Moleskine was Italian -- I thought the name referred to a soft furry texture -- i.e., mole skin. (It's amazing how entertaining I find this silly video!)

    • @jaysterling26
      @jaysterling26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As an owner of a pair of moleskin trousers I can only endorse wearing them ( they're quite tactile it seems).

    • @giovannimoriggi5833
      @giovannimoriggi5833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a bit of a bad joke! Moleskine is an Italian brand, but the pronunciation is difficult even for Italians (being a non-existent word with no Italian sounding intent), so much so that not even most Italians know that it is an Italian brand. Here, It is mostly pronounced without the final E (sounding just like Maneskin!), in a kind of exotic style.
      ciao ciao!

    Alcuni di questi marchi sono più o meno popolari qui nel Messico: Ermenegildo Zegna, Lamborghini, Versace, Ferrari, Gucci e sicurissimamente Nutella. 😉
    Tra loro penso che Lamborghini sia forse quello que viene più spesso pronunciato male, come se fosse scritto "Lamborgini", e le doppie vocali sono spesso pronunciate come se fossero singole, trane la "r", e la "ch"...diciamo che è meglio non parlarne. 😁

    To our German friend(s). Italian does not have a neuter gender so no "der" either "die" or "das." Generally anything ending with "a" is feminine, so "la" and "o" is masculine with "il" or "lo." There are a few exceptions and then there are those pesky "e" endings not to mention the "à" ones like città or università.

    • @giovannimoriggi5833
      @giovannimoriggi5833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In realtà la regola del genere ha un livello fondamentale di elaborazione in più in caso di nomi propri. Non si guarda al nome proprio, ma al nome generico dell'oggetto a cui appartiene quel nome. La Nutella è femminile perché è sottinteso che sia una crema, e crema è femminile. Se sei italiana sai che è un po' una giungla, che molti generi si applicano solo per sentito dire, ma ha comunque tutto un senso. Per esempio "il Genoa", "il Milan", "il Napoli" sono maschili perché intesi come club, ma "la Sampdoria", "la Roma", "l'Atalanta", sono invece intesi come squadre (in maniere che sono consolidate dall'uso, ma che evidentemente sono state decise un po' arbitrariamente, direi). Però è interessante il fatto che i brand di moda si pronunciano senza articolo, come fossero intesi tutti come identificativi di persone, anche quando non lo sono (vedi Zara per esempio).

      La Nutella credo che sia uno dei prodotti italiani più conosciuti e amati al mondo. È strano solo che quando all’estero si chiede di qualche prodotto alimentare italiano, la Nutella non viene mai nominata (pizza e spaghetti lo dicono tutti). Forse sarà perché la Nutella è così conosciuta in quasi ogni nazione al mondo, che la gente (che è cresciuta con la Nutella) quasi pensa che sia un loro prodotto locale e non un prodotto italiano. Ciao dall’Italia ! 🇮🇹👋

    I wanted to see the word, pronounce it, and then compare my pronunciation to Matteo's, but this was not possible because you were just pointlessly transcribing the non-Italians' various attempts at pronunciation. Usually it was possible to guess which one they were trying to say, but when I didn't know the brand there was no spelling so I didn't even know what I was trying to pronounce. I had to wait for Matteo to say it, and that was no fun. If you do something like this again please put the name on the screen. You don't need to transcribe people's wrong pronunciations.

      I mostly agree about it being better if the brand name is shown right off the bat, so that we viewers can also try our luck at pronouncing them properly, but I don't see why they shouldn't show the wrong attempts of the interviewees, as long as they're between quotation marks, so we know those are wrong pronunciations.
