2:40 Muy cierto! En el francés escrito se puede ver la semejanza con el español (castellano) debido a su origen común. Sin embargo, la fonetica del francés es bastante más complicada lo que lo hace ininteligible a un hispanohablante.

I'm french and for frenchs it's very easy to learn spanish, we learn it much better and much faster than english, at school after 3months of spanish class i was much better than after 2 years of english and it was the same for all the other students. But for spanish people it's harder to learn french but still easier than english i think as long as they dont focus to much on the way french is writen. A Toro in spanish is the same as a Taureau in french, exactly same pronunciation and same meaning but different spealing.
Frenches and spanishes have many words in common but very often in french in everyday life we use a different synonim word that doesn't exist in spanish but we still understand the "original" word so when a spanish use that word we understand it but when the french use the french word the spanish guy dont understand so it only work in one direction.
Not the best example but it's what i have in mind now, in french we say cheuveux (hairs) in spanish they say pelos, very different but in french we learn that word very fast and easily because we also say poils (similar word root) for body hairs. For a horse we say cheval, caballo in spanish but in french we say cavaller for a running horse so we learn the spanish word very fast. For a passway in french we say chemin, in spanish they say paseo/camino, very different but french learn it fast because we also say passer or passage for to pass and passway. For a boat, spanish=barco french=bateau (pronounce bato) but in french we say barque (pronounce barc) for a tiny floating "boat" so we learn barco instantly while for spanish it's harder to learn bateau.
Those are not the best examples i have but there is many words like that.
In mexican and colombian they use many words much more different than french but mexicansand colombians are nice and friendly so we still learn mexican and colombian fast and easily.

I also think that the examples you gave are very clear, I mean, "bateau" sounds just really similar to "bote".
Yes I'm a native Spanish speaker too and I find English much easier to understand. And yes in Spanish you can say "bote" instead of "barco" but it's more commun in one countries than others. I live in Uruguay and I communly used the word "bote" for a very small "barco".
Just so you know, but in Spanish we also have the synonyms you mentioned, but just like in French they are less used like "cabello" for hair or for example in Spanish cavaller sounds like caballero, a man on a horse or something like that, or batou sounds like bote, Probably because they are both Romance languages and have more synonyms than we would think

Pareil j'ai presque tout oublié alors que j'étais pas mauvais au lycée et à l'inverse j'étais nul en anglais et suis devenu bon par la suite.
Au final c'est l'utilité qu'on a d'une langue au quotidien qui fera notre niveau.

I studied Spanish in school for about 5 years and while I'm not fluent, I live in California and find myself speaking it every so often, usually to help people find their way, or identify items in a store. I also have an aunt born in Montreal, and I've taken several vacations among Europeans and have heard a lot of French spoken. Certainly the accents and pronunciation are different, but many of the words are similar, particularly when you see them written side by side (etre/estar; piscine/piscina; appartament/apartamiento).
Knowledge of Spanish is DEFINITELY helpful in learning French. After some learning on my own, I was able to help a French-speaking family navigate the various lines in a self-service restaurant during a trip to NY. No, I didn't speak French perfectly, but they certainly appreciated the help.
In 2022, certain members of my family are traveling to Paris so I've started brushing up again. The app I chose to help me "tested" my knowledge and I started at a more advanced stage than expected because I recognized words and grammatical constructs and therefore knew their meaning.

Like you i learned spanish in american school for 5 years and after moving to montreal after graduation it was a HUGE help for me when i started my journey for french. While i didn’t speak any meaningful Spanish. Being familiar with the latin grammar, conjugations and so on was a huge help
Now im quite better in french (can read fluently, and understand/speak conversationally) I realized I forgot all my school Spanish but now my french helps me whenever i try reading Spanish so the two languages have helped me understand the other 😅

Qué vídeo más guay! Salta a los ojos que la persona que sabe hablar español puede aprender francés sin mucha dificultad y de la misma manera si se habla francés puede aprender español muy rapidamente! De la misma manera los italianos pueden entender bastante bien el español! Puesto que catalán es una "lengua hermana" del francés, no me sorprende que muchas personas puedan entenderlo!

Madre mía! La verdad es que hace un poco tiempo que preguntarte es un video sobre español y francés, enfin se hace realidad, me da mucho gusto. Es cierto que hablar francés me ayuda mucho para dominar el español
Mi idioma natal es inglés, pero me considero también hispanoparlante. Con el conocimiento de estes dos idiomas, el francés es generalmente fácil de leer. Como lenguas romances, el francés y el español son parecidos en su gramática, estructura y la mayoría de su vocabulario (el francés tiene más influencia germánica, y el español más del árabe, que corresponde a la historia). Saber el inglés me ayuda mucho también ya que la tercera parte de nuestras palabras son de origen francés (pero de una forma antigua y normanda). Esto es importante para saber algunos, pero no todos, de los cambios de sonido entre la lengua latina y el francés (por ejemplo ca -> cha como vemos en cantar vs chanter; otros son más difíciles adivinar como bia -> ge como en rabia vs rage).
Oír es otra cosa completamente. El francés casi me parece como un argot secreto en que la gente oculta las palabras por rechazar de pronunicarlas. Sólo me siento cómodo ver una película francesa con subtítulos (franceses), ya que puedo saber la mitad de la palabra que no se pronucia. Es un ejemplo estúpido, pero "vingt vins vains" (veinte vinos vanidosos) es la misma sílaba tres veces... pero me imagino que nosotros angloparlantes son igualmente horribles porque tenemos vane, vein y vain (veleta, vena y vanidoso).
Finalmente, debo decir que hay algunas cosas en francés que no existe en inglés ni español como "en" que significa "de esto(s)." Por ejemplo, si hablamos de ejemplos y me preguntas si tengo algunos, podría decir "j'en ai beaucoup" = tengo muchos, pero literalmente "yo de-ellos tengo mucho(s)." Otro ejemplo: el uso del verbo ser para construir formas pasadas de verbos de movimiento. El pretérito está casi muerto en el francés (hablado), entonces no se usa una palabra como "fui," en vez de esto hay decir "je suis allé(e)..." que es equivalente literalmente de "yo soy ido..." que parece bien loco en español.
Native Spanish speaker but French is low key a Celtic-Germanic hyrbid language and they don't want to admit it.
I was playing Skyrim with French dubs only(challenge) and I could for my life not understand a thing but the menu screen. I was also watching the movie Errementari on Netflix the other day too- a Basque langauge movie. ..and I noticed so many similarities of what they were saying to the French dub of Skyrim. I've studied German, Russian, Romanian, Italian, Japanese, French, Portuges you name it.. and French was just super hard to digest.

Juge el Dub Ruso de Skyrim, intendie casi todo como un 60% , no se me difuculto mucho.
Juege el Dub Japones de Skyrim Intendie como un 30% pero no ha hablado Japones por mucho tiempo. .. pero no se mi hizo dificil a digister todavia estuve prendiendo en el juego.
Pero el dub Frances... No Mam35 guey... como en South Park.. ' If you don't have subtitles when listening to French, you're not going to have a GOOD TIME ! '.
My theory is that French is low key a Celt langauge.

Traduje así sólo para enfatizar que parece extraño a hablantes españoles o ingleses, y que tenemos que adaptarnos a este. Algo semejante existe en alemán también: ich bin gegangen (todo para decir fui... lol), en que bin corresponde a ser y no haber.
Hay formas de español en que generalmente se usa la forma perfecta en vez del pretérito (por ejemplo la forma cotidiana de Bolivia)... pero a la mayoría de hablantes la distinción es importante. Es decir que el francés perdió tantos sonidos que también perdió una herramienta gramatical muy útil.

Soy Canadense. Intiendo l'espagnol. J'ai commencé il y a 4 ou 5 ans. Hablo con Niño de 2 años. Pero intiendo au lis? I'm a Canadian anglophone, bilingual in French. I'd like to learn more about Catalan to see how it is similar to French. But at least reading Spanish, I can pick it up, more and more. Not bad for a 55 year old 👍

Esto es muy interesante porque para mí, siendo brasileño, entender el español es muy fácil, son idiomas muy parecidos. Sin embargo, no tenemos la misma facilidad para entender el francés que Los españoles tienen y por lo que he visto en los testimonios franceses, el portugués es el idioma que tienen más dificultades para entender después del rumano. Es curioso cómo no tenemos la misma facilidad para entender el francés que los españoles lo han hecho a pesar de que hablamos idiomas muy parecidos.
Como hablante de Español de Argentina y como latino en general no es fácil de aprender el Francés. Hasta creo que el hablante de portugués por sus vocales cerradas y algunas nasales pueden llegar a tener facilidad en la pronunciación. Creo que este fenómeno que tu dices se da solamente en España y sobre todo en las zonas limítrofes con Francia debido a la cercanía y a la cultura Francesa-Española
A ver lo están haciendo en Barcelona. A pocos kilómetros de la frontera francesa. Donde todos los veranos franceses inundan las playas de la costa brava.... Están prácticamente en la frontera.
El catalán y el occitano se entiende en alguna medida. Sobretodo si aabes otro romance como portugués o italiano.
El francés de París actual NOOO.
Estas personas también hablan el catalán, una lengua galorromance como el francés.
E o francês tem uma fonética bem particular, como não pronunciar algumas consoantes finais e ter alguns ditongos e tritongos com um som específico. Mas, eu sendo brasileiro também, já aprendi bastante coisa e entendo bem o idioma.

@@bilbohob7179 Entiendo. Para mí, independientemente de la región, un español podría entender el francés relativamente bien y viceversa. Ahora, me sorprendió bastante cuando descubrí que los italianos, al igual que los franceses, piensan que el Portugués, eres el idioma más difícil de entender de todos los idiomas románticos. Pudimos entender el italiano relativamente bien, así que creí que ellos también nos entendían fácilmente, pero descubrí que no era así.

Sí! es lo contrario aquí en Latinoamérica, que por compartir un mismo idioma, debido a esto y el background de compartir problemas, situaciones y sociedades algo similares, hay como una sensación de ser más "unidos" como de "comunidad", un ejemplo claro es cuando en EEUU, hay alguna noticia desagradable sobre racismo a algún latino, todos los países salen a a defender el respeto por los migrantes el del libre hablar en cualquier idioma, algo que no siento que suceda a nivel de Europa como "continente", ahí cada uno "baila con su pañuelo"

One of the intriguing things about this is how most of the interviewees seemed to have basic, even negligible, French skills and yet how close they are to the French border. One would think that as with, say Nice, where Italian proximity seems to make most of the French inhabitants there seem bilingual in French and Italian, that a similar phenomenon would obtain here in Barcelona. But no. It seems to work a bit better on the other side of the Pyrenees, where in San Sebastián I encountered many trilingual people (Basque, Spanish, French), old and young, and actually this phenomenon lingered as far west as Bilbao, to a certain extent. I suppose what I’m saying is that I expected that far more French-speaking Barcelonais would be randomly found on the streets of Barcelona than is the case in this sample. 🇪🇸
Interesting observation and one that seems unexpected. But it could be that the basque people still have a stronger cultural connection to France as the basque country stretches over the modern day borders of both countries. A lot of people have family on both sides of the border and could be thus more exposed to the french language.
@@canchero724 Fair point about Basque cross-border cultural connections and you are right, they are quite strong. But on the eastern Pyrenean side too, there is quite a strong Catalonian cross-border thing going on such that, for example, in Perpignan it’s not the colours of the French tricolour you see, but the red and yellow of the Catalan flag, whose colours are very predominant. But your point is right and I would say, only anecdotally, the Basque ties are perhaps stronger.

Barcelona is a 2 hours drive away from France compared to 30mins from Sant Sebastián. Change Barcelona for Figueres and San Sebastián for Bilbao and the opposite is true
@@quico522 I recall getting the TGV from Perpignan to Barcelona quite recently and, from memory, it took 1h20. Back in the day (I’m old enough to remember) I did this same trip and think it took about 3h, taking the scenic route and winding its way through Portbou. I just assumed that with increasingly speedy transport connectivity, along with the quite strong cross-cultural Catalan intermixing, that most people within a boundary, say, from just south of Narbonne on the French side, to Barcelona, would be, almost as a matter of course, trilingual in French, Spanish and Catalan. Put it this way, if I were of either Basque or Catalan heritage I would almost feel it my duty to know French, Spanish and Basque/Catalan, if not fluently, then at least to an advanced level.

El matiz interesante que varios dicen es que, como en Barcelona hablan tambien catalan, que es mas similar al francés, creo que eso contribuye a que se desenvuelvan un poco mejor que por ejemplo aqui en madrid o en otras regiones (por supuesto me refiero en igualdad de condiciones de no conocerlo y no haberlo estudiado)
Sin duda, y te diría que por dos razones: una es que, efectivamente, el catalán y el francés guardan cierta similitud, como lenguas romances que son; otra, es que cuántos más idiomas de la misma familia lingüística sabes, más fácil es entender otro porque tienes más puntos de referencia. Estoy segura de que los gallegos entienden el portugués mucho mejor que otros españoles.

What's amazing is that the accent isn't really much of a barrier. But learning to think with different rules can be an impassible one. What are the grammatical differences though? That way we can start to learn to cross them.

I started learning French after learning Spanish, and it took me a while pronouncing it well, because I'd pronounce the French vowels the Spanish way, especially the "e".

Vidéo très intéressante ! Je pense que la plupart des phrases simples (à l'écrit) peuvent se comprendre, mais les expressions idiomatiques sont plus difficiles parce qu'elles ne sont pas nécessairement intuitives. A l'oral je pense que si on est pas familiarisé avec la langue, l'espagnol, s'il est parlé lentement évidemment, doit être plus simple à comprendre que le français qui a une prononciation un peu compliquée🤔

Barcelona residents cannot be representative of the general Spanish speaker since most are bilingual in Catalan, which gives them a huge advantage.
La gente de Barcelona tambien habla el catalan. Sera mas facil entender un tercer idioma latina, cuando ya entiendas dos.
He estado hablando español por 3 años y noté que español y francés son muy similares. Me gusta el sonido del francés pero no lo entiendo cuando está hablado porque la pronunciación suena tan diferente que español. Puedo entender otros idiomas como italiano y portugués pero francés es el idioma más difícil para entender para mi.
De las lenguas romance encuentro complicado el francés y el rumano.
Como una persona nativa del español, recien empeze a aprende frances porque me gusta y tengo cierta chance de mejorar mis oportunidades laborales, la cuestion es que la immersion del idioma es un poco diferente, por ejemplo con el Ingles aqui en latina america nos gusta un monton todo el contenido gringo jaja pero el frances es muy complicado, por ejemplo musica, series, peliculas, son de una cultura diferente entonces se me hace raro Jajja pero mi meta a corto plazo este año es ser trilingua

Je suis de les Amériques et français, c’est ma deuxième langue, alors je pense l’espagnol de l’Europe est très bizarre pour moi. L’espagnol est toujours très belle and chaleureux, aves tous les accents mais c’est vraiment différent pour moi. L’espagnol de les Amériques est familier à moi, je pense de mes amis et les familles de leur. Mais je dois voir Espagne un jour. :))
I speak Navajo and Spanish. French pronunciation is easy as cake for me. Navajo has more nasal than French so it's easy. Even the guttural sounding R is easy. I love French it is cool. But I am biased towards Romanian! Hehehehehe!

If you think it’s easy mixing up the words in French and Spanish it’s even more so when it comes to an English speaker learning Spanish & Italian. I’m fluent in French and semi-fluent in Spanish and Italian and, while I found mastering French relatively easy (largely as it was the foreign language I studied in school), it has taken me so much more time to grasp Italian and Spanish and keep them disentangled. Keeping French in a separate box is easy enough. Doing this with Italian & Spanish is quite tricky, to say the least.

Estuve recientemente en Europa donde básicamente me comunicaba en inglés. Por alguna razón nunca me atreví a hablar español en Italia o Francia. I’m still thinking about it 🧐La cosa es que tuve un tiempo muy difícil tratando de comunicarme en Francia. A menos que uno esté en un hotel o un museo, la gente de a pie en Francia no habla inglés o es difícil encontrarla. En Italia tuve menos dificultad en este sentido. Estoy aprendiendo francés.
Yo soy mexicana y en Francia la gente prefería hablarme en Español que en Inglés, eso me sorprendió mucho ☺️
As an italian I think that Catalan is much similar than Castilian to french. Barcelona has an edge.

I think German sounds better than French too. Don't go off the exaggerated accents that you'd see in Hollywood movies but listen to native speakers speak, for eg in the easy German channel. It's very different and less harsh sounding than French is to my ears.
@@canchero724 well, to each his own. I don't know much German but I'm sure I could be happy with either of these languages but given a choice I'd take French. If for no other reason, the literature is richer, by far. But I suppose if one is interested in a certain variety of philosophy ...

Personally, French is the one I feel the farthest. If I had to rank the 5 most common roman languages without having learned any, I would say:
Brazilian Portuguese: 70%
Italian: 45%
Portuguese from Portugal: 35%
French: 20%
Romanian: 10%

I'm a french native speaker and I agree. One thing I found as I am currently learning PT from Portugal is that I get perks from the hard Rs. They used a lot in European Portuguese also.
@@vommir. Yeah. Hahaha, Portugues from Portugal is difficult :(. But French, I think my main problem with it, is that even though I can vaguely have an idea of what people talk because some sounds are similar and tenses, and all, it is a language with waaaay too many exceptions, hahaha.

Barcelona no es parámetro porque allí está el catalán, que es más cercano al francés que el español. Lo mismo pasa con el portugués, que fonéticamente es mucho más cercano al catalán que al español.
El Portugués es más cercano al Gallego.

Sin embargo, suelo utilizar el traductor de Google porque no puedo escribir correctamente.

Sí, es curioso como cada país hispanohablante adopta diferentes palabras con origen otros idiomas. Lo pienso porque en México no usamos ninguna de esas dos palabras, pero usamos otras de origen francés.

La diferencia entre Frances y nuestros vecinos del sur se explica mucho dado a la geografia. El latin de Gallia fue cortado de los otros a causa de los Alpes y Pyreneos y progressivamente derrivo de los otros. En el mismo tiempo, haciendo parte de la llanura nordeuropea, favorecio los contactos y intercambios con las lenguas Germanicas (obviamente los Francos en primer lugar pero no solo).
Siglos despues la lengua Romana de la region de Paris termino bastante diferente aunque la base sigue la misma. :)
Cuando lo vemos escrito se ve como que re sencillo xd, cuando lo escuchamos es como que wtf como es que esto es una lengua romance
A mí nunca me enseñaron francés en mi colegio 🏫, solo inglés 😭😭. Pero me se algunas palabras, y en mi opinión lo entiendo más cuando lo escucho pero de leerlo no.

Creo que por lo menos en la teoría será más fácil entender el castellano para un francés que al revés. Después, en la práctica no sé porque por la forma de hablar el idioma comiéndose tantas sílabas y hablando tán rápido, la mayoría de los franceses ( y hablantes de otras lenguas ) necesitarán mucha práctica. Pero esto pasa con el francés también cuando "je suis" se convierte en "chui" por ejemplo.
Y si el espanol no es muy dificil a hablar para los frances : hay solamente que manejar bien los consonantes como la j (mujer,, pajalito) y el rr (perro) y tambien el estres (tomo tomò) que no existe en frances. Es mucho mas simple que el frances!
Pienso que el español requiere mucha práctica de comprensión - como el francés y muchos idiomas más. Comunmente el español se habla extremadamente rápido. Es normal que uno se pierda, más al principio.

Being a Persian and also having English under my belt, Spanish is way easier than French. Spanish pronunciation is much easier, plus there many words that I already know in Spanish since I am fluent in English.

I’m struggling I speak English and Spanish but now I’m learning French which it’s getting easier but I’m terrified of forgetting the language if I don’t stay in contact with someone that can speak it fluently and even at that I struggle with some pronunciation
Leer francés es más que fácil si saber unas pocas normas gramaticales, de hecho la gramática es menos diferente que la italiana en no pocos casos. Ahora, escucharlos requiere entrenamiento... Pronuncian de una manera radicalmente diferente a lo que escriben, y eso por ejemplo no es tan extremo con el italiano, ya que escriben parecido a cómo pronuncian. Para leer es quizás el idioma más fácil, pero entenderlo es otra historia.
This is very interesting because for me, being a Brazilian, understanding Spanish is very easy, they are very similar languages. However, we do not have the same facility to understand French that Spaniards have and from what I have seen in the French testimonies, Portuguese is also the language that they have the most difficulties to understand after Romanian. It's funny how we don't have the same facility to understand French that Spaniards have, despite the fact that Brazilians and Spaniards speak very similar languages.
Don’t overestimate how easy Spanish people find French; as with just about the rest of the world they find it just as daunting; not so much the written language, but that notorious way the French enunciate and swallow words at speed that can seem bamboozling to the French-learning neophyte. In my experience, albeit only anecdotal, the best French-speaking Spaniards fall into 2 main categories: those in close proximity geographically to France and those self-motivated learners who have consciously made a decision to learn French. As for the rest, it seems they are indifferent and, like most others, find the language tough to tackle.

I didn't mean to say that French is an easy language for Spaniards, just that they understand french much more than we Brazilians because Spanish and french has more in common than French and Portuguese although Portuguese is very similar to Spanish. And I'm not saying this based only on this video, I've seen many others where Spaniards understood French a thousand times better than Brazilians and Portuguese did.

To be honest, it's easier for us to understand Italian and Portuguese, French pronunciation is quite different to Spanish, while Italian and Portuguese are more similar
