  • Today I’m showing you how you can get started with your first Warhammer 40k Army for under $100, or about £60.
    If you’re anything like I was when starting out the amount of choice you have is overwhelming, this is the video I wish someone had made for me and just set me on a straight path of “Buy this, ignore everything else and you’re going to love it.”

      @@TinBearStudios I started with Tau, then tried my hand at Craftworld Eldar, both of which are about 500~ points. I finally settled on Blood Angels as my main army and got them to almost 2000 but I got burnt out so I started working on an Emperor’s Children army to refresh.

      @Yacob44 that's funny because my 1st three armies were the exact same. I think I have 8 now... Tau, Aeldari, Blood Angels, Iron Hands, Astra Militarum, Imperial Knights, Adeptus Custodes and Tyranids lol... probably 2000 points minimum per army

    I have been watching Warhammer 40K for beginners vids non-stop because I really want to get into it but I felt intimidated and overwhelmed because I had no idea where to start. Your video helped so much, not just where to start but also where to continue from there. Thank you for this!!!

      This is such a nice comment to read, I pulled this video together as I felt like I needed something like this when getting into the hobby along the lines of "Buy this, paint them like this and this is how you expand" which I would have been grateful for.
      I know not everybody is like me getting into the hobby and has a clear focus on what they want to start with and paint, however I was so lost and just wanted someone to tell me what to do!

    I’m not a beginner. I collected huge amounts when I was a kid with a Space Marine army and an unfinished Tyrannid army. As an adult, getting back into the lore has excited me. However, the practicals of making this hobby work in a cost of living crisis are eye-watering. What I’ve found is that scoping factions on TH-cam and consuming lore first is very handy. I’ve picked the faction and got a codex (The Drukhari). Once I’ve read the codex then I’ll pick a small squad box for £25 and buy brushes, paint and glue. If it works, it works, if it doesn’t it doesn’t but will make it a cost effective task. Rolling back the years is so important sometimes. Thanks for video.

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
      Yeah that's a really nice approach and I follow a similar method when planning a new army too, it's really great fun consuming the lore/codex and planning it that way - I've realised as I get deeper into the hobby it's not about having a single, meta list but having a range of models so when the meta changes you can adapt.

    As much as I might lament the ubiquitous stranglehold of the Space Marines, it's important to acknowledge that the models themselves are designed to be beginner friendly to paint. Not as easy as Necrons (they really are easy mode), but Marines have big volumes which let you get a hang on your brush skills. And remember kids, thin your paints and apply TWO THIN COATS!

    My buddy from work introduced me to Warhammer a couple weeks back and I’m hooked. This video has helped me out a lot because I have been very confused as to which army to start with. Instinctively, from binging lore and talking with him, I narrowed it down to either necrons, orks or space marines, specifically space wolves. Thank you so much for making this video! I initially thought about going with a starter kit and building off of that and after watching this, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

      These comments from you and others in your position are making me so happy - it's the reason I started this channel and made this video.
      I'm so indecisive I just didn't know what to buy and as I had a bit of disposable income I sort of went all in on loads of Combat Patrols but it just wasn't the smart start.
      Don't get me wrong, I love Combat Patrols so much and I'm so excited to build them! But it's not helpful when learning trying to get started - I almost needed someone to sit me down and say "Play Space Marines, paint them this way and you'll have a great time."
      You'll have a lot of fun with Space Wolves, I'm actually so on the fence right now about buying their Combat Patrol (see what I mean!!) as the models are so flavourful and look amazing.
      Thanks for watching and hope to see you in the next ones 😊

    I just started warhammer, I just painted my second mini and I would like to give a small tip, for the Space Marines at least, you don't (always) have to choose Ultramarines for beign the easier chapter or any chapter because they are easy, more so if you want to create an army, instead, you have to be really REALLY sure of the chapter you want, I wanted to create a custom pattern with my first mini, testing stuff, in the end, I think i'll make Salamanders changing some colors on the armor, but salamanders in essence, just be sure of what you want before purchasing the paints because if you go to a store and tell them exactly the chapter you want, they can give you the best colors for it, I didn't and now I have to use what paints I have, I can still work with them, but I should have sat and thought about it for longer

    I want to get into this hobby, just so I can plan cray things out with other people with other armies. Maybe if enough people have Tyranids, and people have space Marines...man it'd be fun to organize on different tables in the same room to emulate the battles in the books. Hell I'm pretty sure this is how GamesWorkshop writes the structure and plot points of their stories.

    • @TinBearStudios
      @TinBearStudios  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There’s a way of playing called “Narrative” which you’d probably like a lot, you build your armies and then fight battles on a map you set out
      So basically one of your games could be “Tyranids have taken this city and the power infrastructure is taken out for the planet, we need to take it back by whatever means.”
      It’s basically D&D in the 40K universe.
      Regardless, you should definitely check the hobby out - it’s given me so much joy over the past few months, as well as new friends I love meeting up with regularly.

    I want to start an army of space marines that have cool shoulder pieces like the black Templars. I wanted to buy the recruit box with the black Templar upgrade kit. Only then I found out that the recruit box is push fit and you can not upgrade the marines. This is my first army and I want something cool but don’t want to be the plane Jane with ultramarines. What do you recommend to pursue this? I was looking at the black Templar and maybe turning those into white Templars or maybe the dark angles

    A good way to start 40k
    In my opinion is to start with kill team
    I know its a different game system
    But
    No intimidation by having a large amount of models
    And its a good way to start and expand your army
    For example with tau
    Buy a box of pathfinder
    And done you can play
    Want to expand on that get a box of stealth suits
    After that fire warriors
    Now you almost have enough to play 40k only missing a hq and something bigger like a hammerhead or a broadside
    Plus You get to socialize earlier with your local gaming community
    And get hints and tips on how to
    Get into 40k more efficient

    Hey, i personally disagree with a lot of points in this video. What you are missing in my opinion is that a lot of people are really looking to just play a specific army and might not have the budget for another one for the next few years. Telling those players to basically just buy space marines, and preferably even ultramarines might be harmfull in the long run. I do see that this approach might be really usefull for someone who has enough funds and time for their hobby but it might be a pretty harmfull way to approach the hobby in my opinion.

    • @TinBearStudios
      @TinBearStudios  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fair enough and thanks for watching/commenting with your thoughts, super helpful.
      I do see where you're coming from but also for me as someone who didn't have a huge disposable income either and feeling lost on "Just buy what looks cool" which was advice I kept getting I do think Space Marines as well as Ultramarines in general is a very safe bet for people starting out.
      They don't need to go straight from 0 to 2000 points and will quite quickly get a grasp of what they do and don't like, for example if they find they love melee they can pivot to that within Ultramarines and have the flexibility. However if they initially went with say Tau and find they really want to experience melee or psychic then you're kind of out of luck.
      So I guess agree to disagree but I really do value you coming and writing a thoughtful comment, it's always helpful for people to have a range of different opinions.

      So you'll be hard pressed to find any players who actually care - last night I played against a guy who had his whole army painted as Ultramarines but wanted to play Iron Hands and so that's what he plays. If someone does have issues, they probably aren't worth playing with!
      I'm not sure how that stands in tournament play and if they care as I'm too new to the hobby to know that, but I think technically yes if you're playing as Ultramarines then it should be Ultramarines...but I'd just do you and not worry about that, it's the reason I went Minotaurs so I had the flexibility.

    Cant agree with the video as i simply would get bored building and painting the starter armies like space marines and necrons. I would quit instantly. So best is i think to really choose the army you like and start building those by either buying a normal soldier set of that army + paint and tools kit or a combat patrol/spearhead box with paint+tools.
    Your recommemdation is just ok for someone who really starts from zero and will have the 2 armies to get painting experience and throw the models away before taking the army he really likes but after all, why not get the painting experience instantly on the army you love.

  • @thequestbro
    @thequestbro ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I know you're trying to be helpful to new players, but telling them that their space marines are locked into a role via color palette isn't the best way to start. If they like say the Fast Attack playstyle of the White Scars, they may not necessarily enjoy the color scheme. The concept of successor chapters should be embraced by the new player immediately. Show them that the game first and foremost IS a creative outlet. Because when they buy their first box of Marines, they shouldn't feel locked into a color palette. Instead you should explain that there are rulesets for each subfaction of marines, and they should start by picking the ruleset they like, and THEN theming their marines around their founding chapter. For example, the white scars, when making a successor, you can read their lore, their rules, and if they do not like the white and red, they can make a successor that captures the spirit of the rules.

    • @TinBearStudios
      @TinBearStudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      More than fair as a comment, I wanted to make it clear that these were my opinions as someone new to the hobby for 5 months (when I recorded this) and these were my opinions of what I'm suggesting they do when starting, not necessarily to follow as gospel.
      That being said, for me, I did get the advice of painting as a successor chapter and actually found it more overwhelming than helpful because I wasn't sure what that meant necessarily and I had even more questions like if I could buy for example Space Wolves units (like the Wolf Guard) and run them and similar questions.
      So although I agree, now I'm much more experienced, that running a successor chapter makes complete sense I wanted to capture my views at the time with a beginner mindset who was overwhelmed with everything from building and painting as well as how to actually play and what to play.
      So I was making this video for people who felt like I did at the time and I wanted someone to just say "Stop overthinking, paint your models this way and play them as Ultramarines" meaning I could just get on with it as since then I've bought new armies and found more of my style. But it would have been good to have more direction at the start.
      Thanks for taking the time to watch as well as comment, I appreciate that.

      Not particularly, in casual games you'll be hard pressed to find someone who cares - and if they do then they probably aren't worth playing with!
      But technically yes, the way you paint them represents the Chapter they're from - which means you can use that Chapter's special/characters units.
      I am running a custom Chapter with the Minotaurs and it's great, but if I was starting out again and on a budget I'd go Ultramarines as they're a well balanced Chapter and I could pick up SO many things on eBay already painted which can be helpful once you're filling out your army.

      Until 9th edition, if you painted up your army as chapters as Ultramarines and Salamanders for example, it was compulsory to use the rules for that chapter, rules as written.
      10th edition has kinda done away with that now and you can just play any chapter with any detachment, so you're all good!
      The detachments are still flavoured like some canonical chapters, like Gladius for Ultramarines for example, but you can definitely use any detachment for them nowadays 🙂

    In the Your Chapter section you state "the colours that you paint them changes how they play". This is not true. It is the Chapter that you choose changes the way the army plays.
    The colours suggested by GW for each army chapter is independent from their play style. The colour that you paint them, be they Ultra Marines, Blood Angels, etc, are not written in stone, even for tournaments at Warhammer World - you can always have successor chapters painted in a totally different colours to the founding chapter - and so colour is irrelevant to how an army plays!
    A good strategy for tournaments is to say, paint your Dark Angels successor chapter with a lot of red. This will throw off the thinking of your opponents, who will have to divert their attention to how your army really plays, rather than relying on automatic thought processes that red = Blood Angels - in this case red = Dark Angels successors who are out to wash the blood of the innocent from their souls, as represented by their red armour. You only need 3 colours (Battle Ready) to play in tournaments. Red armour, leather pouches, gun metal guns/knives.
