This chorus has been giving me goosebumps for over ten years now I think.
Man, the nostalgia!! Brings me back to the early 2000s when I was still in school. Sonata Arctica was the supporting act for Nightwish in Cologne in October 2004, making them actually the first band I ever saw live, and Nightwish the second.
They were my first metal live gig as support to Nightwish "Once" tour...since then I got stuck with metal :) can't wait for concerts to start again

The ending part to this song when you said "Where are we going now?" is part of another song called White Pearl Black Oceans. I Love this band so much. This is the band that got me into power metal and helped me to discover music in the EU. This band quite literally changed my life
Tony Kakko is great when asked by a classical choir if they could could do an arrangement of a song for a live performance he put a condition on that they could but only if he could fly to the UK to perform with them. Was just a really cool guy.

Oookay 16y/o me is really happy right now 😁Getting all the nostalgic feels. Brings me back to my parents house, taking turns choosing music while doing the dishes, and driving on holidays and also everyone getting to pick some music. And like always my mother and sister not being able to stand this music for longer than half an hour 😂I only watched this dvd when nobody but me and my dad were home xD That last 'where are we going now' part is a sneaky cameo from another song of theirs :)

Ahh, finnish metal nostalgia. Every time I hear Sonata arctica, Nightwish, HIM, The Rasmus, Apocalyptica and Children of Bodom I feel like I go back in time to the middleschool.

I was lucky enough to see Sonata supporting Nightwish in 2016 and I say in all sincerity that the thrill that comes of being in the crowd singing along with this song is like nothing else.

Okay, first thing, i think that the best version of the song is on the album Songs of Silence - Live in Tokyo. The keyboard and guitar melodies on that one are just incredible. The second thing, the ending melody in this one is a part from the song White Pearl, Black Oceans. White Pearl is probably their masterpiece. I can't even tell you what is the best part of it, the storytelling or the musicianship.
Yes! Finally someone who agrees that the version from "Songs of Silence" is so much more energetic... back in the day Jani said that this song was his favorite to play live and on that live album it really shows. He's killing it there. The version from For The Sake Of Revenge is nice and all but in my mind not even comes close to the Songs Of Silence version. However I do love that piano part of White Pearl, Black Oceans... as it doesn't really get played that way on the actual song. Sure the melody is there but the way Henkka plays it there is beautiful.
Tony was also an absolute sweetheart when I saw them live in a small venue in Portugal. Bless that man and bless you Chase.
Sonata is from my home town and I've met the guys a few times. I've grown up listening to this band and have many fond memories from all my life connected with Sonatas music
for the past 20-ish years, the finnish trio in my music heart, is Sonata, Stratovarius, and Nightwish. Makes me very nostalgic to see and hear these really old songs. I've seen them live, funny enough they were just the warm up band, imo they could even headline. Although this was back in like 2001, and the headliner was Rhapsody(of fire) which I guess was slightly more well known back then.
Always said Tony has an amazing voice, and Chase gets to experience it aswell now. Happy days indeed :D

Your talk about the perfect marriage of rhythm and melody is a trademark of Jani liimatainen, the guitarist. He wrote the music for this and several other songs for the first Sonata album. He also entirely composed music and lyrics for both Cain's offering and both dark element albums.
This band has a slogan that they put on a lot of their merch and that they make a point of getting the audience to chant at shows. "I am keeping live music alive"... I'll send you a link to it if i can find one
So glad you listen to this song, it is something special and has been living in my head rent free for over a decade. If you love Tony Kakko's voice and want to listen to something a little different, try Powerglove - Gotta Catch 'Em All (Ft. Tony Kakko) yes the pokemon theme in metal. Powerglove do instrumental covers of video game music mostly, this was from album Saturday Morning Apocalypse, covers of Saturday morning cartoon themes.
oh this brings me back to 2006. i was a mere baby discovering metal (not an actual baby, i was 18 lol). i bought For the Sake of Revenge which came with a live DVD. thanks for the throwback Chase!

I saw them at a dive bar in Houston in 2007. It was so awesome. I got the guitar pick from the show, got it autographed, got a photo with the lead singer. What a great night. We also hung out with one of the opening bands.

I've seen Sonata Arctica twice.... both for eeeeeeeepic concerts. One was them headlining with Xandria (Van Giesbergen era) and Delain opening. The other time was in 2016 for the Nightwish world tour where SA opened with Delain for them :) And the entire venue always shook when Full Moon came on with everyone screaming out the chorus XD

What a fantastic reaction! Sonata Arctica will always be one of my favourite bands, I found them when I was only 12 years old! And they are the last band I saw live before the world went to shit (Feb 2020)! The final part of this performance is from the song 'White Pearl Black Oceans' and that's definitely a song you should check out!!

So long since I saw Sonata Arctica live, and it had EPICA for warmup! I'd want to see that one again today when I'm appreciating Epica even more.
Sonata Arcticas leadsinger is Tony Kakko. He is friend of Tuomas (yes... that Tuomas 😄) and Tony was one of the guys who helped Tuomas to handle mayhem after Tarja was fired.
CHASE!!! There's a band where Marco Hietala and Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica´s singer and leader) join forces with two other well known finnish singers to do heavy metal covers of classic 80/90´s pop songs.
They are called "Northern Kings", they have a couple of Videoclips and 2 albums under their belt.
Its just mindblowing that no one has suggested this yet.
(Also Marco and Tony have been together in other projects involving a bunch of finnish artists.....and Tony is close friends with Thuomas from NIghtwish. This band has so many great songs... If you are looking to explore their "slower tempo" side: 'Gravenimage', 'broken' , 'White pearl, black Oceans' or 'Letter to Dana' would be my recommendations. If fast is what you are looking for, 'The cage' or 'Kingdom for a Heart' are some of a much longer list that popped to my mind for you to check it out. Such a cool band and bunch of nice guys. There's also a ton of variation in their discography (Reckoning Night is particular is an album that does so much different stuff), though the older stuff will stick with me most. Nostalgia probably and the link with Nightwish and other bands that were on the rise during that period.
Yes! The whole For The Sake Of Revenge live concert & album is great! I listen to that more than the studio versions even though those are great too.
I've seen them live 4 times, in huge halls and dive bars, and they always sound AWESOME.

Great review as always, Chase! Man, I love this band. I first saw them live years ago when some friends were opening for them here in Ottawa, Canada. At the time, I only knew 1 song from Sonata Arctica. Had a chance to meet them a bit after the show and I was so impressed with their live sound that I bought all of the albums they had with them at the merch stand and the ones I was missing the day after. Tony is one of the best live vocalists I had the pleasure to see live and I have seen hundreds of bands live over the years.
Thanks Chase. On of my Favourite Bands.. they brought me into Metal. Sadly only saw them live once. Looking forward to times, when there will be concerts again.

Sonata Arctica has been my fav power metal band since the first time I heard them back in 1999. This is one of those bands that you expect them to sound better live ...but they sound unexpectedly way better than you think.

I've been with Sonata since they started from my home town and this song was their first major hit nationally, setting their mark in Nordic metal-scene to follow-up more of the same. Great reaction, Chase, keep doing more power metal bands from Finland, Sweden, and Norway.
In the end of the video they play a little introduction from the next song. The song is called "White pearl, Black Oceans" and i highly recommend this song, specially in their live show in Satana Open Air, Kemi Finland 2009, the best show ive seen from them.
I've seen this band live at least 2 times, maybe 3. They're one of my favorite bands.

I absolutely love Sonata Arctica live. They have so much fun, especially Tony. One of my favorites by them is "I have a right". Also, "Sing to Me" by Delain is awesome. So heavy.
