Each to their own. But for me this is one of the greatest ever tracks of all time, any genre bar none. I have said it before but in my opinion even Floor would have to be at her very best to come close to the emotion of Jari's vocals on this one. Oh and the music. Such a shame that many are not aware of this band. I appreciate your honest reactions to Wintersun.

I started with Nightwish, then got hooked on Amorphis and now Wintersun hypnotices me. I am from Finland and a female and you are great being so humble in front of this talented band.

I enjoy your honest and genuine reactions and it is a joy, as you said, to see someone else hearing wonderful music and getting to experience that with them. Jari (Yari) Mäenpää used to be in the band Ensiferum and started Wintersun as a personal project which eventually led to him leaving his former band around 2004. He records a ridiculous number of tracks and has had problems with computers not being able to cope with it all. It must be a nightmare for live performances. They definitely have backing tracks but from what I have heard and seen they are pretty dynamic live. I see someone has given you links below. Jari's voice has improved tremendously with each album. He has really worked on it as he was primarily a guitarist and took up singing because they needed a singer lol. I get the impression he is a little eccentric, perhaps bordering on the genius level can do that. Most of their songs are pretty long, though they have one under 3 mins "Beyond the Dark Sun", from their first album. If you get time I would like to see you react to "Sadness and Hate" th-cam.com/video/x3s19wDvyeU/w-d-xo.html Cheers from Australia.

Their first album has more traditional melodeath. I’d recommend “Winter Madness” for something like that. Their “Live at Tuska” concert from 2013 is pretty good quality. Here’s a video that combines fancam video with the audio from the desk: th-cam.com/video/ah8vgIOCe-c/w-d-xo.html
Jari (lead singer) actually records all the instruments except drums in the studio. Kai wasn’t available to record their last album due to his Nightwish commitments, and so Jari programmed them.

Loved this! Jari's insane vocals ooze emotion and touch your soul! "Loneliness (Winter)" (official lyric video) next, please. It is the saddest, most beautiful song, a true masterpiece as well.

Great reaction. Probably my favorite Wintersun song. My other favorite is Loneliness (Winter) from the Forest Season's album. th-cam.com/video/qIiZFpOQnd8/w-d-xo.html Jari wrote after the death of his father. One of the best songs at capturing the quiet and emptiness of winter. Very atmospheric. Only other song that comes close is the the Quiet as the Snow movement from Nightwish's All the Works of Nature that Adorn the World. Never seen them live but given the complexity of the music (200-300 tracks for each recording) I am curious how they perform these songs live.
Spot on about Jukka, the bassist here, now being the new Nightwish bassist. Drummer Kai is also the current Nightwish Drummer. Different Jukka was Nightwish's previous drummer but had to retire for medical reasons and is now in band management.
For something similar but different checkout Jari's previous band Ensiferum (Latin for sword bearing). They are a Finnish folk metal band with strong viking/questing vibes to their music. Jari was only in the band for the first two albums and I think those are the best. I haven't found any live video's with Jari and the band. One of my favorites is Lai Lai Hei. th-cam.com/video/uEqsfYLRqDc/w-d-xo.html. There is also a live acoustic version and a live album version from Wacken 2018 after Jari left the band to work on Wintersun. Also love Treacherous Gods and Windrider.

Your background with September Sky, and a fan of this genre provides you with a great ear for this kind of music. Great reaction. (and yes, the bass player and drummer during this era of Wintersun are now both with Nightwish)

What a great and honest reaction this was. As a guitarist yourself you know how they do it but can't tell how the hell they do it :) Your reaction is almost same as mine was at mine first listening. Now that i've heard this tens and tens of times I may finally follow the time signature of each part and makes listening more pleasant, enjoyable I mean.. One said this is advanced metal and you have to be advanced listener to follow.. Great reaction as always, will follow your real reactions in a future also 👍

You're correct about Kai and Jukka now being in Nightwish. The original drummer of Nightwish was also Jukka.
This song has about 200 tracks in the mix. The album took longer than expected because the systems weren't available when Jari conceived of this.
Here is a link to one of their live performances... th-cam.com/video/4KT28_q78Vg/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=WintersunExtras. You'll notice the drummer is different and Jari is only the singer. Wintersun is more of a project of Jari's, similar to what Ayreon is for Arjen.

Yeah, both of them are now in Nightwish (Unfortunately). Nightwish have been poaching here and there to survive even if they don't really diserve it IMO. I don't think Wintersun is done by now but future looks grim at this point because of that.
Sorry for the Nightwish lovers out there, I lost all respect for that band many years ago.
    Cheers

Hopefully you are ok with me mentioning this, but a week or so ago I listened to September Sky's song "Time" (a 2020 single I believe), and I thought to myself, 'I hope he gets a chance to react to, or even experience off channel Wintersun's "Time"'.

@@massivemetalreactions I do enjoy it. Complexity isn't the only bar to measure quality with, including masterpieces. Judging from your shelf in the background, you are quite familiar with some masterpieces that don't exhibit the complexity of this progressive metal leaning song.

I like ur honest reactions. Don't diminish urself so much. Just try to enjoy. To understand finnish music better I have couple of suggestions: Kingston Wall - Shine On Me. Piirpauke - Konevitsan Kirkonkellot. Wigwam - Grass for Blades. Pekka Pohjola - Rita.

A very delightful reaction! Unlike with many reactors you're not always sure if they are genuine but with the last wintersun reaction you have honest opinions and criticism and that's great. Here you don't give any criticism (and it doesn't need to since it's a masterpiece) and by your dissecting of the song it's very evident that it was a real delight to you as well.
Next song which you should not miss is Loneliness (Winter). It's by far the best vocal performance by Jari

In your previous Wintersun reaction I 100% agreed with you that Sons of Winter and Stars needs multiple listens until it fully opens up. I said this works from 1st listen, but maybe that was too optimistic, haha

  • @karljensen6768
    @karljensen6768 ปีที่แล้ว

Complexity!! Is almost too lame a word for them 🥰🥰
The concept album Forest seasons is also not an easy listening kind, but after listening, maybe you have to do that five times, then you suddenly find a lot of geniousity, where nothing is left to coincidence 🥰🥰
But there is many other pieces to fly away with 🥰🥰

Wintersun definitely need repeated listens. I must have missed your reaction to "Sons of Winter and Stars". I'll go and check that out. 🤘🤘❤❤ There are a few good reactions to Kai Haito on drum cam for Wintersun. Here's one: th-cam.com/video/xNBFI0HAsxg/w-d-xo.html Kai and Jukka are definitely the current drummer and bassist with Nightwish. Jari - guitar and vocals - multi-tracked the keyboards. They never found a keyboardist to play with them and they used backup tapes for live performances. There are some live performances out there, but the ones I've found don't match the quality of the recorded material.
