Some may object to using a $2300 Canon lens on the Canon vs a $700-800 third party lens on the Sony - I personally see more odd color (with Samyang/Rokinon) and contrast (with Tamron) with 3rd party lenses - but I think the results of this test are still pretty much valid. It's essentially a wash except for the log shots. Half of the first 8 shots I picked Sony and half I picked Canon. I picked Canon for all 4 of the log scenes. Cheers.

Great review! Yes, the R5 is amazing in low light and probably the king up to ISO 12,800. I think it's very underrated in its low light abilities and the colours, especially at 8:10 look 100x better on the R5. People just assume that because of the large sensor the R5 will suck at low light but Canon did something special with their new cameras and they make their own sensors unlike Nikon and Fuji who just rehash Sony sensors.

Issue I've had with Sony is that Greenish tint which you can still see on the girl and the little boys skin, as well as the chrome trim on the truck and the dogs fur.
Other than that greenish-blue tint, Sony is really good. one of the reasons it looks more attractive at a glance is because your eye is more attracted to the green color in that first split second when seeing a plant or an image, it's a survival thing. I think the Cine line of Sony cameras is the only camera that doesn't have this greenish look from my user experience.

I end up using the camera colors maybe 10% of the time... This whole exercise only applies to what the camera does automatically... Raw files contain hundreds of shades of color in-between every possible color step in a 24bit image. Seems silly to let a very simple automatic routine in a camera choose exactly how those 14 bits (16384 shades) per color gets rendered down to 8bits (256 shades) per color. over 90% of the information in the image gets thrown away to make that 24bit image. Am I going to choose what to keep and what to throw out of that data or will I let a very weak AI choose for me?

One thing to note is that you were using S.Gamut 3 Cine. Unless you've been given some new Cine LUT, The Sony LUT isn't made for the Cine profile so you probably messed the colours up there.
S-Gamut3.Cine is also the wrong LUT to use for TH-cam.
"Combining S-Gamut3.Cine with S-Log3, which has gradation characteristics similar to those of scanned negative film, makes it easier to grade a movie for playback on devices such as a digital cinema projector."
For a closer comparison, try use S-Log2 and the standard S-Gamut.

It is not fake at all, just smaller than on the cinema cameras. You can use the smaller .cine variants instead.

Its interesting that when we usually talk about skin tones, its typically in reference to Caucasian skin. I'd really like see a comparison of camera colors with models who are Indian, Native American, Black, Asian, Middle Eastern etc. Let's see what these cameras do with different skin tones across the board. It think that would offer a more realistic, accurate picture of how skin tones are handled by each camera. (Of course that maybe difficult during Covid, but just something we need to see...sometime)

    • @ariesmight6978
      @ariesmight6978 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Certainly there is a reason why caucasions are used as models. Color tones are easier to notice. Vs on someone who's skin color is brown or coffee black. Especially in bright to low light conditions. Now if you are going to test sensor capability. In low to very low light conditions. Then including people who's skin color. That is brown trough coffee black. Alongside white, red and yellow would be perfect.

  • @avarmadillo
    @avarmadillo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The first time I looked through these images I was concentrating on skin tones. In the blind test I picked Canon 7 times---and every time I picked Canon it was preferring the skin tones. Three images seems a kind of wash--both looked fine I couldn't absolutely prefer one to the other...but....
now I've been going through looking closely at every thing else---close looks at skies, contrasts, naturalistic looking colors and tones, color tints, weird polluted colors and I've got to say I'm shocked at what I am seeing.
Sony skies: totally weird and unnatural looking. Bizarre. There is no true yellows---tons of weird greenishness in the little girl's slide, and the yellow traffic block the boy was sitting on---NOT yellow. Sony has managed to tint it green. The boy's car---the bizarre purple throughout---really weird and unnatural looking.
Sony skies---weird, and looks unnatural, painted on by some artist who has no talent. At 5:56 note Sony all shot through with some weird yellow tint---all over the sky as well.
I was seriously thinking about the Sony---and their improved colors-. Yea, maybe they're better (how could they be worse???--they're, hands down, the worst of all the companies for color)....but I have to agree with Carlos Quintero: their color science? Very unsettled, even now in late 2020. At times it looks unnatural to me--painted on, and at other times, like with the greenish slide/traffic concrete thing, or crazy tinted skies..it just looks like bizarro world.
I saw a real world comparison in back to back videos on Park Cameras in virtually identical circumstances with the same model--really pretty gal; great subject for skin tones and shadow fall-offs, etc.
The comparison was accidental, because the videos were simply placed next to each other in the Park Cameras youtube production, so it was only natural to watch them both and make the comparison----especially if you're considering buying a new camera.
The first video was the A7sIII, the second? The new Panasonic S5.
I watched them closely several times. Picked up the phone, cancelled my pre-order for the A7sIII and ordered the S5 instead.
Yes, Sony now has a 10 bit 422 video camera, and, as always, the bells and whistles they try to draw you in with----but NO MORE! After really looking at Park Cameras videos and your video---NO MORE!
Maybe Sony people and fan boys (and girls) find it all exciting...but, it's really ho-hum.
Blackmagic Design, far superior color, Panasonic GH5 and Killer 6k S1H---422, anamorphic, DCI, 10 bit, RAW, high bit rates, waveforms, synchro-scan---all that and a lot more has been going on for several years now.
    Sony's not innovating.
They're still behind the curve, and still with those "make your own color profile" color profiles...and hard to grade versions of Log. Better menus...yes. It's only taken YEARS for them to respond to that. But still Canon/Panasonic, Blackmagic---almost every one has better menus and ergonomic button layouts.

i actually scored a draw on the end, mainly because i liked the canon's log results way better. the greenish tint of the sony is just way too apparent on those night shots. on the daytime shots it really depends - i found the skin colors on the canon to be more natural and better looking, while the landscape shots (especially with a lot of green) looked much better on the sony.
the good thing though is that, now that the a7s III does 10 bit, you don't need to be afraid to get ugly artifacts and color shifts if you want to change it in post.

Canon 4 K HQ is the absolute winner to me. The colors are just warmer and not colder as i would describe the Sony A 7 S 3 footage. The overheating is no issue for me bc i normally never shoot longer than 10/15 min Videos, alone bc of the sometimes very slow rate of being able to upload to youtube. Of course you can only see the 4 K or 4 K HQ video on a Laptop or desktop and not on mobile devices

i was hoping youd switch up the shots a little. It was obvious the B was a little greener and probably the sony in every shot. I preferred it in all cases except shots 2 and 12 where the red was nicer than the green. I still hate that the sky turns out teal with sony instead of blue, i could never figure out how they keep colors pretty accurate then make the sky completely change no matter where i shoot.

Great job Max for real life, outdoors comparison. I scored B-7, A-3, Tie-2.
If I was shooting a documentary, I would choose the Sony every time. I have screen with 100% RGB accuracy. The waterfall (3rd image) the Canon shows the rock face with a cold blue cast, the waterfall has lost detail, and the shadows under the trees are darker and less detailed... while the Sony waterfall mage is better is every way including colours. In the first eight images the Canon shows some faced with a little less detail (slightly blurred?). This is very odd (I trust Max got it right) as the Canon has dual pixel auto-focus and a 4K HQ image (down sampled 8K).... which should on paper match or beat the Sony but fails in these real-life tests.
The most troubling image is the last image (little Max under the street lights)... at first I gave the win to the Canon (sharper & better colours) but changed it to a tie... the Canon has made the image with "Canon colours" by typical pushing red into the skin tones but also the yellow brick has been "correct" for daylight yellow (looks unnatural)?? .... However, the Sony seems truer to life for a nighttime streetlight scene (there is a natural colour cast). I find the Canon colours tend to be over processed and are not accurate to life.
On top of this the Canon also has overheating issues with high quality modes and the Canon codecs are more CPU intensive to edit.

I was able to spot the Canon immediately, on all the profiles. The difference between the two LOG quality is seen in the last scene at night, with the green skin tones. That exaggeration shows the problem that exists even in normal light, just a bit less. The only way to get good color out of a Sony is via HLG3, rec709 color mode, -1 saturation, Detail -7. Then, color grading it is much easier.

I assumed each picture would be randomized as to which camera was A or B (some reviewers do that). Thinking that way I spent a few minutes on each picture without consideration of what came before. I had a sense of which was which but wasn't sure. Many seemed too close to call which was best... (so subjective), but I picked a winner regardless. Group one split 50/50; B, A, B, A. Group two(Neutral) all B. Group three (Slog3 vs CLog) all A. So it ended up dead even for me, though the Canon R5 is the winner because I'd be using the CLog and grading it. I was quite surprised with the night scenes; I thought the Sony would be sharper.

The Canon has simply the warmer colors / higher contrast between warm and cooler colors. I know that a lot of you tubers say that you can make the Sony A 7 S III look like the Eis R 5, but how much extra time, per video will this take you.....the decision will come up for me in Summer then i have to make the decision. What makes my decision making tougher is that i will need a 3 camera set up, and for that both of theses cameras plus a more budget friendlier can era, but which makes videos of a similar Quality like the Lumix S 5 will be pricey. Max what would be your advice as which camera too choose. Just so you know it will be a music production, gear reviews covers, centric channel ?
