You don't learn from your mistakes if you try to bury them. The reveal of the 2022/2023 Ranger (2022 Worldwide, most likely 2023 NA) shows that this Ranger may make up for the 2019's faults. I like my 2019 Ranger, it's a good vehicle, but I personally wanted a hybrid powertrain for my next vehicle, so I went with the F-150 Powerboost. Was gonna buy a Lightning, but there's a 3 year lead time on that...

Ford held back with the current Ranger to save F150 sales and they’re paying for it. People won’t switch from Tacomas or Colorados for the current Ranger. Now they put themselves in a spot where the new Ranger will have to be a lot better but will have to compete with the Maverick and Bronco, as well as the ridiculous current car prices.

Is the Ranger perfect? F no. It is light years better than my Tacoma for MY needs. yes.

I've had 2 of these. I had a 2019 XLT FX4 and currently a 2022 XLT Tremor. I will say both trucks have been rock solid. Extremely reliable. Maybe the design is considered "old" but it's bulletproof as far as I'm concerned. I'll take a proven, tough design over "soft touch" interior all day long.

I just bought a 21' Ranger and I'm not denying the interior isn't "cheap," but I picked up the Ranger in equivalent spec to a Tacoma for several grand less and the Ranger still has a much better powertrain than the Tacoma. Edit for the Taco fanboys - reliability being equal the Ranger has twice the torque and does 0-60 in about 6.2 sec versus 8.5 for the Taco.
None of the midsizers have a luxurious interior, why pretend?

@@hermatred572 nothing wrong with the Taco powertrain, but I get about 24 mpg combined in the Ranger and the Taco v6 has no torque. Literally any video and owner will tell you that you have to rev it to get it moving or to pass. The old 4.0 had more torque. Also doesn't hurt that the Ranger is made in the US, not Mexico and that the Ranger has the highest American content according to studies.

It’s always good to seeing a car reviewer highlighting the true pros and cons of a vehicle, as well as reviewing the underbody. No other car reviewers offer this level of information in the automotive world. I sincerely hope your channel reaches 1 million subscribers in the future, and I’ll be looking forward to your future reviews.
Whenever you get the chance, will you do a fully in-depth review on the new Chevrolet Suburban (Preferably the High Country with the saddle brown interior and midnight blue metallic exterior paint) and the updates it received for the 2022 MY? I’ve found your original Tahoe and Escalade reviews to be very informative and entertaining as well, and I would like to see you and Jack do a review on the oldest automotive nameplate as well, and take footage of it during early evening, morning and afternoon times for us to fully admire its LED head and tail lamp designs.

"Poverty Spec"... that would make a great bed decal. It feels old because it is old and its pretty cheap looking but priced like a full sized F150 a couple years ago. I think its a good looking middle size truck but not enough there to make me want to go buy one. The interior is really sad. The drive shaft looks like an oversize toothpick. I think your assessment was spot on. Ford drug their feet before the brought this aged design to the states and all they have done is come up with some really goofy sticker packages. Its a fish out of water and won't sell like the old rangers. How about a Torquey NA V6 with a manual and a modern interior and improved NVH / Quality? They might triple their sales... oops too late.

If your searching for a new truck in the $25,000-$35,000 range, the question becomes why would you buy an f150 when the ranger exists? To put it in perspective a regular cab XL 2wd f150 with no options is like $30,000 and it still comes with roll up windows... like, come on Ford. I’m pretty sure you can buy a 4WD ranger with that money.

I got a pretty much fully loaded, slightly used 2019 XLT last year for $32,000 before the used car market went crazy. At that price point the lack of refinement is more forgivable. I got it as basically a do it all type of vehicle and it has been serving it's purpose well. I didn't want a full sized land yacht but comparing my Ranger to my brother's 2021 F150, it's night and day in terms of refinement. The new Ranger reveal will be happening later this month so I'm curious to see what they'll do.

Did the same thing this year, 17500 miles, loaded XLT FX4 for 34k out the door. Didn't want a full-size, wanted to reliably tow 5k (which killed the Ridgeline and Maverick), hated the driving position and powertrain on the Tacoma, Frontier had a recall already on their 9 speed, and pricing on the Colorado/Canyon was awful out here. Interior on the Ranger is pretty trash, but the powertrain feels great and so far it's doing everything I need it to do pretty comfortably. If Honda wasn't still putting a timing belt in the 3.5 and dropping the interval to under 60k on it when used to tow combined with the 9 speed that people claim gets very hot and smokes its fluid at 4-5k towing I would have gotten it because it was so much more refined and smooth to drive.

I have my own Ranger Tremor and I’m also a ford Technician so I know how to diag drivetrain shutters and hesitations and I’ve never experienced those. Now I’ve only had mine for 5200Km but still. I’ve had Tacoma owners come into the truck and say the ride feels 100 times better in my truck than theirs. Might have just been the specific truck you had. Promo trucks are usually driven tougher than traditional newly bought trucks. Also you said fuel economy is bad and then floored it.. I do agree it’s not the greatest but you def didint help the average with flooring it 3-4times

I moved back to Europe and just ordered a Hilux Duty 2.4D. You can give away Ford Ranger for free and no one will touch them. I have employee benefits and could order one for almost 40% off list. There are literally thousands in stock all over Germany, that’s why you see them on job site, communal service and public service. They pretty much get them for free from Ford just to keep the plant in production.
Edit; waiting time for the Hilux is 12 months and only got the discount because of my work benefits. If you walk in you will not get any discounts whatsoever. Mine is only the duty with steel wheels, the upper trim are even longer wait

I have a Ranger XLT FX4. You get most of the hardware upgrades mentioned here for half the price with the FX4 package. I do not experience any bothersome driveline vibrations. I do notice that in town and on back roads the transmission behaves better in Sport than drive. The interior is cheap compared to Jeep or Nissan; as a reviewer you have to call it out, but it doesn't creak or rattle and in daily use it doesn't bother me. The fuel efficiency is considerably lower than advertised. But the ergonomics are great, the power is right, and it does all the truck stuff without complaint. Thanks to reviewers trashing the cheapness, resale price is lower than the competition, made it an easy choice when I was looking for a lightly used truck.

I grew up in a Ford family and I've been a Ford fan my whole life. My first new car was a brand new 2002 Ford Focus that I convinced my place of employment to get as my "company car." In 2007, I left the company and bought the Focus from them for super cheap. In 2008, I bought a Honda S2000 to add to my garage as my "fun" car. It gave me a taste of what "could be" outside of the Ford camp. In 2016, I replaced the Focus with a Fiesta ST and to this day I absolutely adore it.
This may be the end of the road for me and Ford. I just don't know what they make that appeals to me anymore. I haven't driven a modern Mustang but the form factor is lacking in utility, and I don't want a truck. I feel like Ford isn't interested in me as a customer anymore. I love my S2000, but I don't feel like Honda makes a car like that anymore, either: Look at the new Integra reveal. Frankly, I don't think anyone can make a car like what I want: Fun to drive with a great sound and handling that makes me feel like a hero even when I'm going slow, and space to transport stupid retro shit I shouldn't be buying.
But maybe that's okay. Every generation has had "their ideal car" taken from them. There were the huge land-boats with fins, the big block insane horsepower cars, the fuel-crunch misers that Japan brought to us that were "done right" at the time, the rise of turbocharging (my very-very first high school car was a Merkur XR4Ti, way before I cared about cars, and I would love to try one of those cars again), then the refinement of turbocharging and handling, then the return to naturally aspirated, high-revving precision-driving instruments, then the small, nimble, and light turbocharged cars, and now economic turbocharged torque monsters again. Eventually something all of us want will show up again. It'll just take a bit of time.

I've lived in Europe (as a Czech) most of my life. European ford is a bit different. Dad had a 2011 Mondeo (that brother still drives) in diesel, fantastic car - it's the European Fusion... Mom had 2009 Focus diesel, also was great. In the US, I had a 98 Escort, great. Now I have a 2019 Bullitt. It's just me and my wife and as a daily (and also track beast) it's fantastic. Wife picked up 2017 F150 used. We aren't loaylist and crazy Ford people, but from what I've experienced, the vehicles in my life that carried Ford badge have been great.

Interesting, ive owned a 2020 ranger xlt for about a year now. Before I purchased i drove all midsized trucks excluding the gladiator (price automatically made it not an option) and colorado (known transmission issue leading to class action lawsuit). So that technically left me with Ranger, tacoma, ridgeline, and frontier. The ranger drove better than all of them, had more power with better gas mileage, better tow/load ratings, and subjectively looked a bit better than all but the tacomas (its just a bit more aggressive stock). The drivetrain doesnt have these issues that you described and for comparison almost every other reviewer says the drivetrain/power train is best in this class. The only concern i have is if any major repairs will need to happen around 80-100k due to the direct injection design. I dont regret the decision in the slightest.

I'm glad to see you guys Revisit the Ranger on the XLT Trim, even though I will still Tout the STX Package on the XL Trim until the Heat-Death of the Earth.
If I'm honest, the Ranger Tremor is at least a Welcome Addition to the Ranger Lineup. I know people want the Ranger Raptor, but IMO, with the Ranger, It feels like you get more with less, so the Tremor Package should be well-suited for some buyers on the Market. I still think the STX FX2 or FX4 Models are the BEST Value in terms of Features, Capability, and Price ($35K for an STX FX2 and $40K for the STX FX4), but the XLT Tremor Package is, from my perspective, in the Discussion for BEST Off-Road Mid-Size Truck. It's up there with the Tacoma TRD Off-Road, the New Frontier PRO4X, and the Colorado ZR2 Bison.
I'm still iffy on the 2.3L Ecoboost 4-Cylinder Engine. Yes, it's Got EXCELLENT Torque and Acceleration, but Reliability remains a major concern to me. It's been about 2 Years, but I still need more time to Determine if this Engine will be 'As Reliable as a Natural V6', as some Ford Fanboys will claim. Add In a 10-Speed Transmission that feels like 'WAY too many Gears' for a Turbo-Charged 4-Cylinder, and I'm left wondering if Ford Really knew what they were doing with the Ranger in terms of the Engine and Transmission.
Overall, the Ford Ranger is STILL, IMO, a Truck with an Identity Crisis. It STILL does not know what it wants to be. A Family or Basic Living Truck? We have the Maverick. An Off-Road Machine? We have the Bronco. A Fully-Functional Work or Luxury Truck? We have the F-150. The Ranger feels like it's just.... There. I still LOVE the Truck, and enjoy whenever I get the chance to Test-Drive One of these, But I've Owned a 2017 Toyota Tacoma SR 4-Cylinder RWD for Two Years Now, and I'm still NOT Convinced to Go for anything better, considering my needs. It feels like Ford is Targeting TOO SPECIFIC of an Audience with the Ford Ranger, Hence why I still see more F-150's on the Road than I do Rangers.
I REALLY want this Truck to Succeed, I really do. But the Trends and Purchase Decisions of the BUYER Matter, and I still think the Ranger Falls Short on too many fields to be a SOLID PICK for most people's Needs.
Fantastic Video as Always Savagegeese. I look forward to whatever comes next.

01:10 is the quality level of detail I come here for, and I'm sure I'm not the only one....
EDIT: As a European, I think many of the problems you guys described go unnoticed here. The old Ranger was the perfect-sized truck for many business doing light hauling work, as well as for government agencies like the forestry service or border patrols, where an SUV was expensive to use. And I think it'll stay that way for a while too, explaining also why Ford or Toyota have kept the old platforms.
It's a similar scenario to the Crown Vic being used well-beyond its intended life-span simply because it was a very good tool for a very specific set of jobs.
The Maverick is too nice on the interior for fleets to buy and lacks the sturdiness of the Ranger, while the Bronco, albeit an excellent niche off-roader for enthusiasts, will not attract fleet buyers either since it's more expensive.
The final factor is the F-150. It'll technically do everything a Ranger does, but better: it tows more, hauls more, has durable power-trains that are highly customizable, etc. But the reality is, it only works in very few places in the world outside of the US. The Aussies are probably the other good market for it, but the infrastructure in many countries simply doesn't deal well with their width and weight. They, ironically, offer too much, no one needs to carry or tow as much as they can 80% of the time, so ownership is restricted to folks who have a thing for Americana or specific businesses who do some heavy-duty work.
For everyone else though, the Ranger is the perfect size. You even pointed out during the driving segment, Americans see the Ranger as a mid-size truck, but here it's pretty much full-size, with anything larger being just excessive (I'm not even gonna get into the likes of the Chevy Kodiak of the Ford F 600 and 700 series, which are unfathomable to most people here).

I only wished for a longer video. Haha
    Keep up the great work!

Well, I guess the advantage of it feeling 2 generations old is that we're not working out the engineering bugs. I have a 2021 FX4 with the Ford leveling kit, MT Baja Boss tires and it's taking everything I've thrown at it off road so far. Coming up on 19k miles, I think the Ranger series is the best compromise between off roading, daily driving, payload and towing capacity, mileage, speed/torque, reliability and cost. It would be cool to see the US market get a real Rapture. I guess they decided to hold off for a whole new redesign before they do that.

The fact that the transmission makes that noise and had that vibration should mean that it is a no go for any buyer. That's extremely bad quality..

11:19 What you guys are talking about is EXACTLY what I feel in wife's used 2017 F150. It has the 3.5 twin-turbo and the 10spd and the transmission programming forces the truck into 7th gear at 35mph, or I think highest gear at lowest speed I noticed was about 42mph in 8th gear (8 out of 10 gears). It feels like a misfire or a bad/oooold diesel and if you need to accelerate or not feel it, you need to either put it in sport mode or push the gas down lot more. It's the only one thing I hate about that truck.

Funny how I love my Tremor Ranger XLT and have no complaints about the trucks interior because it’s a truck… not a luxury vehicle. 39K for mine and I’ve seen some pay less on others reviews comment section. It’s a great deal and more then just “incremental” upgrades old boy. The seats are great btw. I don’t even think about my old 2014 Tremor F150 anymore.

why does Ford calls it "XL" when "Poverty Spec" has such a nice ring to it

They are right! I don't mind the interior, better than chevy and toyota, but the vibrations! I have a 2021 Ranger XLT and you can feel those vibration like he says, it feels so bad, very annoying, sport helps but you can still feel it sometimes. The way the truck looks is amazing though, love the stance and perfect size for most. I just wish they tuned the transmission/drivetrain better.

I agree with what you said about the fuel economy features not being that effective and putting too much strain on the engine & drivetrain. I disabled the start/stop feature in my gladiator the second day after I got it, and I am still able to average 25-30 MPG overall. Fuel economy is over 75% how you drive. I wish they would stop putting these features in new cars pretending that they improve fuel economy.

Seems like a really good off road truck. I don’t know why it gets so much hate, but I haven’t driven one. The Tacoma sells like hot cakes, but it’s slow ancient and thirsty. Taco should be able to match 19.7, though. Ranger is getting excellent reliability scores.

I have a 19 Ranger and I work in the industry so I'm extremely familiar with this truck and the competition. I weighed my options and also took into consideration the discounts available which no one seems to comment on in these videos but it was a simple choice for me. I don't know what they are talking about, regarding the 35mph vibration. The transmission, sometimes has an abrupt shift on occasion but the overall smoothness, excellent acceleration, and quiet cabin make for an extremely comfortable ride. Towing and payload numbers make this thing an absolute beast. Yes, the screen is super laggy which did drive me crazy but I spent most of my time using Android auto which works great. At 25k miles, I'd do it all over again over the Colorado, the much more expensive Taco, the frontier, and especially the Ridgeline.

Almost seems like the compact/mid-size pre- 1/2T truck market is nowadays built to be purposefully older, even keel and antiquated even. For the it-just-works crowd yet don't want to take any shine away from the fuller sized trucks..
A good thing with 'diahrrea proof' interiors is that you can feel relaxed about opening up the doors and windows to elements when in the outdoors or a site- easy to wipedown when done no suede or finicky fabrics to worry about.
oddly my 1991 Ranger xlt had a lush velour scarlett red interior! that, i couldn't get mudded up inside haha. today's styling- is all about dark interiors

The Ranger Tremor is a fantastic truck. It is by far the best "all arounder" mid sized body on frame truck you can buy in the states right now. The ride is very smooth and compliant. The power train is also smooth and works well. I don't know what these guys are on about. The interior is a bit spartan, but not that bad at all. The audio system is definitely meh though.

Excellent job touching on the drivetrain vibration. Even the cameras picked it up, because it is that bad. I test drove one of these pre-pandemic and mentioned it to the salesman at McCarthy Ford, and he said everyone brings it up and they “all” do it (noting it wasn’t just the truck I test drove.) It’s really unbelievable 2 years later Ford hasn’t addressed the transmission tuning (possibly because it would have to revise fuel economy numbers) or added vibration isolators in strategic locations. It’s as if Ford is intentionally sabotaging the Ranger.
Alas, the pandemic happed right as I was about to buy a used Avalanche, and that fell through, and since have put a down payment on the Maverick. With two kids all I need is a small quad cab and a small bed, and the Maverick, which wasn’t announced until a year ago, I’m happy I waited. Hopefully Ford is able to fill my preorder by the end of the year.

Ranger looks a lot better when you consider its direct non-Maverick competition. The class sucks right now as Colorado/Tacoma are nearly as ancient. The Frontier is probably the best option at the moment, but I wish it hit better EPA figures. 2023 redesigns for Taco/Colorado/Ranger will determine the future of the segment.
