The classic MINI Cooper, in production for nearly 40 years, has not suffered the purist enthusiasm that has struck other brands; MINI owners modify their cars. Gildred Racing of Buellton, CA, modifies these cars as well as maintains and restores them, and Zack and Matt went to go for a visit and try a couple of cars. This one, a 1974 example, was originally built by Mini-Tec and features a complete powertrain swap from the Honda CR-V small crossover, including a 240 HP B20 Engine with VTEC, manual gearbox, and fully functional all-wheel drive.

I'm going to be doing the K20A swap in my classic, and adding the CRV driveline to make it AWD. It's an option you can get from Minitec who makes these swaps. Then throw a Rotrex on it and put out 400whp. They've already done something similar and that Mini was INSANE!

@@F1r3Arrow5 From the factory Mini's of this era don't have any springs, it's literally riding on big rubber doughnuts over a tiny damper. I don't know with all the work done to that car if they have gone to a coilover suspension, but they are only not terrifying from the factory, because the stock power is so manageable. I'm sure it's a difficult task to tune any aftermarket suspension, with a wheelbase that short, with AWD, and 5x the horsepower. Plus it has to feel totally weird with the huge tires, stock it came with 13" wheels..

They must have spent some money and or time finding a b16b. I know they were hand ported and polished by a a true master Honda mechanic i cant remember the name of the guy without looking it up. But they didnt make a lot of them.

Anybody know if there is video on this build? On the website says this car is for sale for $49,000 and the build info says it has an LSD on the front and LSD on the rear. After so much work, I would think they would eliminate the Honda Dual Pomp system making it a true full time AWD system.
someone did manage to add a vicous coupler to a CRV out of a freelander but idk if it would work here

Ah yes the b20b. My girlfriend just turned in her 2000 crv with 289,000 and my god i couldn't believe how well that thing ran. B D H and J series honda motors are well designed machines love them.

Initially, before watching, I thought this was Moogs Mini from @ Mighty Car Mods. Look it up on youtube, they build his mini from a supercharged mini motor to the Honda VTEC motor.

lol the MINI was not the first transverse FWD production car, by far! The oldest i know of is the DKW F1 from 1931, but there's probably something even older.
You guys have to check out Bad Obsession Motorsport Project Binky. They've put Celica homologation rally car running gear into a mini. I mean engine AWD and suspension. They almost finished the 6 year project by now.

Dude I used to work with was all about k series in my ek hatch but I wanna go with the bulletproof B20Vtec. Plus it's cheaper

the short block may be the B20 out of the CRV but thats a B18C head, Crv’s didnt have vtec until they introduced the K24 into the Crv

i think the AWD system being the way it is it's a life saver. with that short wheelbase had any amount of power been sent costantly to the rear you would spin in a blink of an eye.

Wow that thing REALLY has a mind of its own when accelerating. I wonder if there is anything broken in the suspension, or if it just really can't handle the power.
the wheel base is to short for the power so it kicks out and its probably a 75% rear and 50% front diff
so it wants to slide if it has hydraulic steering it would be a hella fun powerslide car
...basically, Project Binky in 2045 ;-)

This is half of Binky, the visible welding and fit in finish on this is poor and the engine is a weaker unit and the awd system is entirely fwd till slippage, Binky has a stronger engine gearbox and transfer case with perfect 5050 split, Binky will also be knocking on for 60% more power than this one

In March of 2019 while lapping the Ring I too got my doors blown off by said Mini Cooper in the rain/sleet. Dude driving that thing is a maniac.

Haha I have a 68 Austin Healey Sprite which is effectively a rear wheel drive version of that. It’s the most beautifully terrifying thing to drive lol.
When you think that the original 1959 came out with a little 850 cc engine , and now people are putting all manner of different engine some bike and other car engines and adding 4 x 4 just tops it all off , totally insane but love it.

radical mods are ok as just about anything is an improvement on reliability. Loved my BMW mini though
Could probably use a better alignment or better suspension geometry. Just because its short doesn't mean it has to wander quite that much. It is pretty cool though, just needs a bit more time in the oven I think.
That and I don’t think it’s ridged enough build too.
People always think a mini is cramped, but look at the headroom above Matt's head!

The B20 is out of a CRV but the head was from a civic Si B16. That makes it a Frankenstein B20V!

That's because he isn't reving it out to the limited like he should. Notice they don't show the rev counter. I suspect it saw 7k max. Peak power is probably 8k plus too
@@Razmatazuk His 3.5 first gear shifting into a 1.956 second gear results in an RPM reduction of ((1-(1.956/3.5))*100). If he revs to 8300, his RPMs drop to 4640rpm exactly. For his RPMs to drop to 5000rpm in 2nd gear after upshifting from 1st gear, he needs to rev to 8944rpm.
Ever built custom Honda transmissions professionally? I have. This guy, along with everyone else that's messaging me are going to have to do something in order to overcome this. This is why I began writing this thread just over two weeks ago.
