Marketed like it was some kiddy movie which is totally fine if that was the audience. However when you see how mature a lot of the concepts and fights were it’s like they thought we need to market it with the dumb jokes and other stuff.
The turn with Megatron is more understandable if you see him as a TRUE believer. He believed in the system and in Sentinel Prime. Think of it like the Word Bearers and Monarchia.
Hadn't thought of it that way, but the Word Bearers are actually a pretty good analogy for Megatron's disillusionment. You can tell he had full faith in Sentinel Prime in the first half of the movie, and his whole world turned out to be a lie.
The way I personally see it is that D-16 was always angry at the system, it was that he believed in SP and he hid his anger like how an adult would, he would lash out at the little things like what happen after the race when he rant to pax, The moment he realized that the reason why he hid his anger was a lie, he just wanted to tear down the entire system that was made from it, no matter the cost
@@XxTW0F4C3DxXalso “Rise Up!” I love how the spin on that line is that Megatron is trying to get the Decepticons and Cybertronians to rise up against their oppressors
That makes sense his turn over the movie was honestly rather unsettling for me with how he was in the beginning and turned into this monster that we know
I actually liked Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax/Optimus Prime. Of course, NO ONE can replace Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, but the man is getting old, and you need someone who is younger and someone that can hold their own, and i think Chris Hemsworth did a great job. Yes, in the earlier stuff, his voice is a bit obvious, but when he gets his powers and he makes the big speeches and monologues, he sold me as this great leader, and i got CHILLS when he actually becomes Optimus Prime!!
Fully agree with ya there. This is suppose to be a younger Optimus Prime, and even the original G1 Orion Pax wasn't voiced by Peter Cullen either. Chris did an outstanding job that still carries the spirit that Larry Cullen told Peter back when he was first casted to do the character.
the quintessons were mining the entire planet for energon using the miners, they only come and go to pick up thier orders. So they are off planet and have no idea that sentinal was killed....which is why the speech at the end was challenging the quintessons if they return. I imagine that will/would have been the premise of the sequel.
I think if this movie is successful it will be a trilogy. The second movie will be about Autobots and Decepticons formed some kind of temporary alliance against the Quintessons, while also lowkey taking jabs at each other, and will end with the beginning of War for cybertron. Then the third movie is how the Autobots lost and ended with them having to evacuate from Cybertron.
Bingo, and I think this is a good example of tropes being executed well. It’s when tropes are done poorly that they become a bad thing. Tropes, like other elements of writing, can be useful tools, and like all tools, can be used well or poorly. An analogy: poorly executed tropes are like using a power drill as a hammer; it might barely work since it’s a blunt object, but works efficiently when used properly- as a drill.
there are huge differences. trying to tell the same story as other 500 movies have tried, in the same year, will have some backfire. like how scary movie was kinda fun but then they rehash-rehash-rehashed it and everyone were rubbing their forehead. trope is a trope and a narrative tool is a narrative tool
To be fairs, tropes usually show up organically in a story. A good writer is just gonna write their story without paying them much mind, and while an audience is going to notice them, that is more a sign of our human ability to find and recognize patterns. There are unfortunately a lot of bad writers right now who seem to start their characters from tropes and work from their, which super does not work well.
That's why it becomes important to know when a trope crosses over into "cliche" territory. Overuse or overexposure is usually one of the factors driving it there
EXACTLY. I HAAAATE this "subvert expectations" era. EVERYONE wants to rewrite the wheel...but MOST LACK THE TALENT TO😐 Tropes are tropes because they WORK😑
I actually think the Megatron turn was executed perfectly. So sudden and so violent. Remember. This guy only wanted to stay in his place because he thought that was what he was meant to do. But then, AT THE SAME TIME, he discovered that Sentinel betrayed him and his race, and he got Powers. He noticed that now he has the power to make a difference. Megatron, in this movie, has THE PERFECT villain arc transition. All that struggle was in there. Inside of him. He just kept it repressed. It always has been. But he always lied to himself, pretending he was ok with it. He was like "Bro, Sentinel Prime is doing all those sacrifices, we must do what ever we can to help him". Why do you think he got the abuses of Darkwing without saying anything? Because he liked it? No. Because he genuinely thought he was doing the right thing. Then he discovered the truth and got offered some Power. Remember his reaction when he saw Sentinel bowing to the Quintessons? He then decided to never bow Sentinel when he got captured. Or do you remember the pain in his voice when he said Sentinel betrayed them, right before he blasted Orion? This is the best version of Megatron, EVER! Thats a perfect villain story origin.
Yeah, agree. And while the movie is not in your face about it, there are some dark implications about how the cogless bots are treated. (like how D-16 said that they deserved being hit by Darkwing because they talked back to a supervisor?) D-16 went trough a lots of suffering, humiliation, an struggle, and he did it because he beleived he was doing the right thing. And then it turned out all that abuse was for nothing. I would be fucking pissed too. XD
@pepita2437 Yes! 100% agree. Like... D16 basically got his brain nuked by all that. And add the power the received, he felt like he could take care of things himself. Perfect character development. Also very tragic
Except there’s nothing in this arc which justifies Megatron’s “Peace Through Tyranny”. This is definitely an interesting TAKE on Megatron, in the same way that Pheonix’s Joker is an interesting TAKE. My question is where do they go from here? How does this version of Megatron choose to conquer other planets and go down an evil path. If they are truly attempting to do the whole “He thinks he’s the hero” arc, they need to completely rewrite his path. They’d need to focus on his desperation to help the Transformers race survive (which doesn’t really work now that there’s no problem with energon), so if he is just going to be the leader of an Exiled Clan, they have a way to go to have him be the Megatron we know who goes to earth. It will need a trilogy to get him there.
@Timmy6983 Well... Sentinel Prime was "a hero". But Megatron saw how he turned out. So he didnt want to be a hero. He wanted to be a tyrant. The old ways, working to save your population, did not work. It worked just serve Sentinel and the Quintessons. But it didn't really help to save Cybertron. It only destroyed it even more. So, no more heroes, no more freedom, and no more peace... at least for now. Those didnt help at all. And he is convinced they wont work now as well. To be honest I understand him. He is willing to take the hard decision. He took the first one when he let Orion fall. Notice how hard it was for him to let go of his hand. He was fighting with himself because deep down he knew he had to learn how to take the hard decision. And letting his only family go was the first step
Yea no, Megatrons evil turn wasnt done "perfectly". Its pretty sudden for one and two goes against everything he said he believed in, especially with his friendship. Its more like you assumed he was evil from the beginning, and worked to a preconceived conclusion. He should have showed those tendencies more. He idolized Megatronus who likely preached the opposite of what he became. But im still glad you enjoyed it!
They *DID NOT* do a good job *MARKETING* this one. I'm a HUGE Transformers fan.... and had ZERO DESIRE to see this one. I actually passed on it. Is it REALLY that good? I dunno....the advertising was kinda "meh" for the whole thing. Nothing i saw really excited me to spring for this one. And i saw Rise of the Beasts in theaters.
I was surprised by how mature and great this movie was! This was the Transformers movie I’ve been waiting for! I can’t believe it was marketed as a kid’s movie!
It really is that good. Go watch it if you have the chance, we gotta show Paramount we want more of this despite its lackluster box office returns so far
It breaks my heart that this is flopping at the box office. It’s the best transformers movie ever. Even if not my personal favorite. That’s still 2007. But man. I hope paramount gives it another go.
Me as well. I keep checking Wikipedia in hopes I'll see an increase in ticket sales. They marketed the film as a kids movie and I think that's why there's a low turnout. Hopefully with word of mouth that it is a pretty dramatic film , more adults will come out.
@@Jeremy-k9t I have a unhealthy obsession with this IP. You’re probably honestly talking to one of the two biggest fans ever. And let me tell ya that 2007 boy maaaaan when prime pulled up in that alley way? Life changed forever.
I blame the Bayformers movies for this movie and the previous two movies doing bad at the box office. Terrible movies that made people expect all Transformers movies to be stupid, full of inappropriate jokes, and not even follow their own lore. I'll give the first Bayformers movie a pass, but the rest are unwatchable.
The marketing really said hey this is a kids film it’s funny and it’s a buddy comedy for kids, I wasn’t gonna watch it then It comes out and I realize oh wait it’s for everyone and it’s actually good!? The marketing department really didn’t inform us that it had drama heart and good writing they dropped the ball with all that marketing pointing to this being a nothing movie that’s just a kids comedy. It’s actually a down on their luck story of classism and brotherhood which is wild
Well said. I'm an 80s kids. Grew up with G1 but wasn't planning on seeing this as the trailer made it seem like a kids film. My 8 year nephew wanted to see it though...so we went and loved it!
Yes, it's criminal how misrepresented this movie was in the first trailer. Unfortunately, that's the trailer they chose to run in theaters up until release. It put me and everyone else off from it.
It's a good movie but Paramount deserves the L at the Box Office. If they had half a brain to put this movie out in 2014 instead of AOE; this would've been a hit.
The movie was a 9/10 for me. I fucking loved it, I wish it was about 20-30 minutes longer to flush things out and let things breathe a bit, the pacing was a bit off for me but everything else was perfect
Inside out 2(an animated film)came out 4 months ago…and grossed $1.7 billion dollars. That kinda blows a massive hole in this dumbass theory, right? Has anybody that agrees with this, actually looked at the box office for animated films over the past 30 years?😂
@@strikerecho2592which makes sense. These versions of Optimus and Megatron are clearly meant to be their own thing with heavy inspiration from other continuities. Typically Optimus is a Librarian/Clerk at the Hall of Records and Megatron is a gladiator. Having them start off as long time friends who were put through the same oppression and lies but reacted to them differently still keeps that classic dynamic while also introducing something new
Personally, I like that Megatron was a goodie 2 shoes, always follow the rules kinda guy. That made the it more traumatic and impactful for him to find out his entire life was a lie & he was just a slave. Real trauma & betrayal can totally change a person.
Despite it being a kids movie, I still found it odd that megs was the only one bothered about being used as a slave. The others brushed it off like it ain’t no thang lol 🤦♂️
5:00 It's funny, they knew back in '86 that no one wants to see humans by even giving the kid an Exo-suit at the start of the second act, basically making Mr. Witwiki a transformer, and worked it into his character arc, learning to walk, transform, and save Springer, then his dad, Bumblebee, and countless others by shooting down the cover to Unicrons acid...
High Guard follows Megatron b/c he killed the betrayer of the Primes who they served. They’d been fightin a guerrilla war with no end for so long. Megatron killed the one responsible for their situation and promised to do away with all Sentinel followers and the system he set up. They believe in him more than Optimus who still was holdin on to his honor code
@@noveldefender9815 Because they participated in the brief destruction of Iacon. Not to mention, Starscream's leadership had probably done more than enough damage to corrupt the High Guard into something far from its noble origins. Most deeper Transformers lore expresses how violence erupts from a series of symptomps starting from the bottom. If the Primes, in their almost infinite wisdom, could allow someone like Sentinel into their number, than it stands to reason others like him had also emerged long before the Primes died. The Primes themselves were unified, but that unity was not shared amongst other Cybertronians. One could consider it an 'accidental' dictatorship, wherein the strongest and most wisest kept control simply because there wasn't anyone who could come close to replacing them.
@@TheNapster153 So why didn't the High Guard stop Megatron when Starscream was losing to him? Megatron took leadership no problem so why didn't that work for Optimus only hours later?
@@noveldefender9815The impression I got was that Starscream was the de facto leader until Megatron came along because when the Primes fell, they were likely adrift without a proper leader for a long time, probably because no one else wanted the role
Its criminal how misrepresented this movie was in the first trailer. That put me and everyone else off from it. I guess you could say it was more than meets the eye....
You and Tyrone Magnus Nailed it!! The trailer turned off G1 fans. I had no interest until he reviewed it. I have it a chance and YES! It was really good
Tbh I had that reaction to dnd with the first trailer and I think the second trailer made me go maybe I should check this out, I was so glad I did cus that as one of my favorite movies that year, this I had faith in from the start though cus I knew where the movie had to end at
Same, but it's driving me nuts hearing people complain that Peter Cullen isn't voicing Prime. There's a lot of Optimus Prime VA's with different takes on different Primes but all these chucklefucks keep saying is get the 70+ year old man to voice the 20 year old man, like come on. I love Cullens Optimus Prime but he is a very very specific type of Optimus Prime and even his 1984 Prime is not the same as his modern Prime.
@@Gaia_Gaistar You just articulated my exact feelings. Peter Cullen will always be THE Optimus Prime. He will always be MY Optimus Prime. But I am open to other interpretations, and I also recognize that Mr. Cullen is getting older and won’t be able to play Optimus in the coming years. As much as I love his voice performances, he needs to be able to step down when he wants/needs to, and others should be given a chance to take Optimus and make him their own version. Honestly, I’d be cool with Hemsworth playing Prime in future sequels. As long as they give him a chance to build up this version of the character through multiple stories, I think he could form a bit of his own legacy, like Gary Chalk or David Kaye.
Those that grew up on Gen 1 can always recognize someone that didnt get into Transformers until Beastwars. They all complain about the human characters as if they werent a major part of Transformers from the very first episode.
That’s true. But that doesn’t really make them wrong of the fact that the human characters made the writing worse 90 percent of the time for these movies (with maybe a few exceptions). The shows were the only pieces of transformers media to get the human characters right. Also your account is almost as old as me gah damn lmao
They couldn't remember the name Orion Pax and think Peter Cullen is the only Optimus VA to ever voice Optimus Prime. I love Peter Cullen but come on, man.
I joined the Transformers fandom with Armada and the Unicron trilogy; started collecting right as G2 was turning into Universe. I was definitely used to having human characters, as well as, perhaps most importantly, different voices for Optimus and Megatron than the OG series. From there, I drifted on to War for Cybertron and its sequel, Fall of Cybertron (including the obscure DS adaptations) and learned to love the franchise without being burdened by human characters; then the Bayverse films came along and I'm pretty sure made all of us hate modern human inserts into the Transformers' millennia long war. There was just something truly ridiculous about regular soldiers using standard issue 5.56mm tracer ammo to easily kill ancient living war machines that have survived eons of conflict with other ancient living war machines that have also survived eons of conflict. Seriously, it was absurd to see random foot soldiers doing damage to bots as legendary as Megatron with small arms; it makes the whole thing feel like, "Oh, we really don't need Transformers to beat Transformers, let's just use the rifles we made for human conflict." That, and the other pointless human characters who felt like they were supposed to somehow be audience self-inserts, yet depicting some of the most cringe-inducing character progressions in cinematic history. All of that made me long to go back to either the WFC era and visit Cybertron in the earlier days of the war, or at least get reasonable human sidekicks again, with well-written characters and dialogue, sensible interactions with the Transformers that give off a sense of scale, of both size *and* the sheer, unimaginable gulf of time between humanity and the Transformers, and less of the cringe-inducing crass humor and unnecessary drama to distract from what actually puts the audience in seats to watch. We post-G1 fans of the franchise don't hate human characters in Transformers media because we think it should be just about the bots. We hate poorly written characters that are of no use to the plot, steal screen time from the timeless heroes and villains we want to see, and turn out to be the magical key to everything in a story that's encompassed millions of years. There's been way too much of that, and we get very tired of it. There's so much to the Transformers universe, from the great comic series to the Exodus books to the various video game adaptations, that dive into parts of their history before humanity even existed in the universe; heck, there's a whole lot *more* time where there aren't any humans in the universe to interact with them. The fact that some folks, from both the fans' side and the movie producers' side, feel like they have to cram humans into every Transformers story means that we become less and less likely to explore most of those stories just because of their insistence. We have hundreds of thousands, probably millions, of movies about humans. It doesn't hurt to have a few about robots that don't have humans in them.
@@Gaia_Gaistar Gary Chalk, Alan Tudyk, Jon Bailey, David Kaye and Jake Foushee have all voiced Optimus. It hasn't been Peter Cullen the whole time Transformers has been in production.
Optimus Prime always had a different voice when he was still Orion Pax, it changes due to Matrix of Leadership and him becoming Optimus Prime. The creators of the film said, that his voice will change to Peter Cullen if they will make a trilogy out of this (its planned as trilogy). Its still not G1 and Transformers: The Movie, but hell yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by this. Netflix's War of Cybetron still the best from modern TF, at least season 1. But that had an easy way with somewhat adapting IDW's Tranformers comicbooks.
The movie money failure is do to it being released in September. When kids are going back school and parents just spend a crap ton back to school stuff and clothes. Why would they spend more money on a movie especially in this economy.
Im a Transformers fan and ive been waiting for this review. Who knew making a transformers film about Transformers is what fans wanted. IDC if it flops this will be the iron giant to TF fans.
@@thedarkemissary but it is, it's a coherent Transformers story set on Cybertron that focuses on the Transformers. There are reasons why it flop it was the first trailer, early screening and possibly the marketing. When the second trailer came out it started to get a positive outlooks on most fans. Iron giant flopped but it's still a good movie, Transformers 4 made millions if not billions of dollars but it doesn't mean it was a good film
@@Achieme You seem confused. You've conflated "good" with, "what fans want." Good isn't actually a measurable quality. "Good" is subjective. However, "what fans want" IS measurable. Quite literally, because fans can physically demonstrate, "what they want." By, buying tickets. Fans aren't buying tickets. Reviews are out. Word has spread. Been a week. Ain't no fans going to see the movie. Again, the fans LITERALLY don't want this. It's a good movie. Fans don't want it. Iron Giant might be a "good" movie. Nobody wants it. Understand?
@@thedarkemissaryYou're just wrong. Literally the people who have been praising this movie are long time transformers fans. Stop being a dick and accept that you're wrong.
@@thedarkemissary Checking in to say, please don’t talk down to people. There is more to a movie not doing well at a box office than just “fans don’t want this”. The Iron Giant didn’t do poorly because of no one wanting it, it did bad because it had terrible marketing. If mommy and daddy are bringing little Timmy to go see a movie, they might only go to one movie for money reasons, and they’re going to go take him to see the one the know more about. In Iron Giant’s case this is even more obvious, because it was a new movie, so it didn’t even have fans before it came out, so I don’t know what you’re trying to argue there. The Iron Giant’s problem is what I’d argue is close to what happened with Transformers One. Iron Giant just didn’t really have any marketing, while Transformers One had bad marketing. Someone can make the best freaking pancakes in town, but if no one knows about it, are people going to be lining up to eat it?
Abysmal box office performance so far. I enjoyed this film a lot but I think there is too much Transformers fatigue to make it a success. Hopefully they can license it to Netflix to recover some money on it, even though it will eventually be on Paramount+.
Every time with the complaints about Orion Pax is kinda dumb because the person doesn’t have to be stoic 10/10 all the time especially before he became Prime and had to keep learning and growing
This is also set before the Cybertronian Civil War that is about to erupt in full swing. Optimus Prime is more so a title than a name. I'd imagine once he's forced to sit through the first few horrors, we'll get to see him wise up real fast in the name of survival.
Fun fact: the music when Optimus prime is being bring down by the blue light to the core of Cybertron is remix of the song when Optimus prime is dying in 1986 movie.
D-16's transition wasn't surprising and it wasn't fast either. He was bottling his frustrations up for the belief of a better future. The reveal of everything he believed being a huge lie and the fact the the person he looked up to(Sentinel Prime) murdered his idol(which was Megatronus Prime) released all of his pent up rage and his patience practically gone. It also got exacerbated when Starscream egged D-16 more in their fight with him finally manifesting his iconic arm canon. That was the moment he got taste of power which snowballed to him becoming Megatron.
30:17 no the primes were told they intercepted a message about a secret meeting of the quintesson leaders and went to the cave to discuss a strategy to infiltrate that meeting and kill the leaders, but sentinel used it as a set up for an ambush, they did not go under the impression of meeting the quintessons to talk
"Flop" or not. It's still made well over half It's budget in a week, and it hasn't even been released entirely worldwide yet. I think it'll turn a profit.
As a transformers fan this had sooooo much more for me than I ever expected in a transformers movie. I recognized almost all the background characters from the High Guard and the Miners, and I can’t wait to go through the list of names from the race. Not to mention several subtle references to the original movie like Elita telling Orion “You do not have the touch, you do not have the power” 😂
It looks really, REALLY, CHILDISH. Transformers is quite popular with those who grew up watching the shows as children. I didn't even consider watching this. It looks unwatchable from from the marketing alone. Im surprised to see so many saying they liked it here. Might have see what is it about.
@@DarthVantosyeah but you gotta start gearing towards a new generation somewhat, other IPs like TMNT, Star Wars, Marvel, etc have, it doesn't feel like they have a fan base under 35 and that will be their downfall.
It'll make its money back, that story is nonsense. China only just got the movie yesterday, plus Europe isn't getting it for another few weeks. Paramount screwed the release up, but those markets will turn it around no problem. Personally, I loved the movie. Bee was a bit much for me, but everyone else was great, especially D-16's descent into Megatron. Cullen not voicing Pax is probably for the best. The man's 83, so he won't be able to do this for much longer. Hell, David Kaye was OP once, and that was after several years of voicing Megatron.
The scene made me laugh was when they get captured and asked "why did you tape his mouth shut" response was because he wouldn't stop talking... Even when unconscious... Especially when he was unconscious 😄
10:10 I honestly think they grabbed Chris instead of Peter because it’s a wayyy younger Optimus. Prime was kinda old when he arrives to earth. He’s dealt with pain and war on cybertron for years. He’s a full leader when he’s first arriving on earth and speaks like a leader who’s lead the auto bots for a long time.
I do think it was star power. They saw Mario or took a note from all the game movies and TV, and decided if they got a major star in it, it would succeed.
My only complaint on this film and I think it would have fitted the film nicely. There was a noticable lack of Stan Bush music, not exactly "You got the Touch" but maybe something similar to "Till all are one" since is a phrase we hear on the film a couple of times. But other than that, this is the best Transformers film since 1986.
Megatrons turn made perfect sense to me… when you betray someone whose entire world view is based on right and wrong - they are most likely to snap then someone who sees the world in gray tones
I just saw it with my son...he is 27 and grew up with the cartoons. We both loved it...great flick! I don't understand how every one got their core, but hey, I went with it.
Prime’s original first name was Orion. As far as a quintessence, they were in the original TV series starting in season three. So they are a long-term character of the Neos/legend/canon of the transformers. Although you should probably learn how to say it correctly lol cause you’re just totally murdering that name lol
Megs turned Sith faster than, Anakin! If they had played up the word ‘Slave’ then it would've helped his case in being so vengeful. The scene in the old ‘86 movie sums it up best when megs tells unicron “I belong to Nobody!”
So glad you guys saw it! Had to tell you guys about how good it was after I saw it. I do hope we get more. As a big transformer lore nerd this movie was something I've been waiting for.
That first trailer turned off a lot of people. If you want people from all ages to watch your movie you can't have a trailer portray your movie as a purely childish and dumb movie.
15:30 There is some suggestion (later in the movie by Elita) that Orion's actions are being "guided" - and every "reckless" action by Orion early on is part of a sequence that takes him Forrest Gump style to the key item he needs to complete his stated quest (the little hologram device inside Steve)
As a hardcore G1 fan since 1984, I originally had no interest in this, but now that I know it’s not just some silly kiddy flick, I’ve decided I would like to go see it after all. But its marketing with its trailers were really terrible, they didn’t tell the truth about what kind of film it really is. But I know the truth now. Thanks for your review and for continuing to keep it real, guys. I’m gonna give it a chance!
I had zero interest in seeing it because the trailer made it look like it was gonna be terrible and meant for the littlest of kids, so to hear that its a good movie kind of sucks because like you Ive always wanted a Transformers movie that was just Transformers on Cybertron but Hasbro ruined any hope of this film before it even released with such a horrible trailer
As someone who has no real knowledge of the lore behind the Transformers I found this movie great. Just good fun. I hope you guys plan to do a review on The Wild Robot which is out this week. I have seen a few reviews already saying it is a must watch.
i definitely thought this was going to be a kids movie and only went to see it because someone bought me a ticket and I ended up absolutely loving it, they did a HORRIBLE job advertising
UK Fan here. It still hasn't come out yet for cinemas (comes out tomorrow the 10th). When i first saw the trailer my misses asked if i wanted to go watch it and i said to her "no looks shit its just a cash grab for kids", after much convincing she got me to go with her to the pre screening and i am so glad she got me to. The movie is Fantastic and we both left wanting to watch it again. I'm so grateful she convinced me to go
They need to make a full movie that is just like the intro to the Bumblebee movie with Frank Welker and Peter Cullen while they're still able to. Briefly seeing all the transformers on Cybertron with that quality CGI was such a tease.
Thank you for your honesty and for taking the time to review our film. It's criminally underrated at the moment. We really want to make a sequel, there's more story to tell.
On paper at least, the movie should not have been as good as it is. The characters are solid and distinct from each other. None of them are given too much or too little time. The story, while a bit formulaic (not that it is an insult) and tropic, definitely had sufficient work put into it. There were plenty of easter eggs, but none become the centerpiece, at least not for very long. The best part to me was how you can clearly see how and why the characters become who they are, and for each one of them, you cannot really blame them for becoming who they do. I will acknowledge that some of the VA choices are a bit questionable - and yes, I will always have quite the soft spot for Peter as Optimus, just as I will for Kevin as Batman and Mark as Joker - but none of them are bad. The music is not bad, but nothing stood out (not in any bad way, sure, but still no real noteworthy tracks); I can probably guess why, but it will never reach the same levels as the '86 movie. With all of that said, for the complete package, I will take this movie over the '86 one. Yes, the '86 one is good, but really, you only watch that one for the VAs and the music. With this one, you can enjoy the movie as a whole.
As a lifelong Transformers fan, this film kicked ass. It surprised me because I assumed it would be a more watered-down kids’ movie upon seeing the first trailer. I was going to accept that for what it was and just try to in for a fun time, but it was a lot more engaging and mature than I thought it would be. It feels so good to finally see the lore done justice on the big screen. I’m so glad the Transformers themselves got to stand on their own as the main characters, without having to be set dressing for humans to run around in. I think human characters can work, but I prefer to focus on the Autobots and Decepticons.
This Transformers movie is likely to be better than Bumblebee. I mean, it's a cgi animated film that takes place before the war with the Autobots and Decepticons.
But at the same time, this have alrady happened in the Aligned continuty, and the War for Cybertron games. In WFC Starscream was a Sky commander of an orbital statsion, which Megatron invaded, beat Starscream to scrap, took his men, his supply of dark energon. Stasrcream swore alliance to Megatron in exchange for power, and for his life (and he wanted Megatron to teach him how to control dark enrgon) Something similar happened in the Aligned continuity too.
I agree with you, Joe. I wasn't interested in seeing this movie with my friend and his daughter. But once I sat down in the chair and started watching it. It won me over and then I felt bad because I knew it wasn't going to make money. If other people felt the same way as I did
Feels like great movies like this have some higher up that doesn't want it to succeed. I'd put this movie beside Wolverine and Deadpool for best movies of the year :P
There’s 3 Things I have to clarify, 1. I’m ok with the Quintessons not showing up, I’m aware how much of a Threat they are but the whole point of this Movie is how Optimus Prime and Megatron began the Formation of the Autobots and Decepticons, IF the Quintessons had appeared more often it would ruin the Film and we won’t get any Sentinel Screen Time, 2. Elita wasn’t the one that had the Idea of using Arachnid to Expose Sentinel, It was Orion would did a Quick Thinking when Arachnid said I can see Everything showing showing how Clever Pax is with his Sharp Edge and Mind, and 3. Bee was done good enough, I get that the Character didn’t evolve but Bee has done Well Enough, his presence is literally the Beginning to Pax and D16’s Journey to who they are destined to become as it was a Red Flag when they found out that there’s 50 Sub Levels instead of 40, his Creation Steve has the Map, and while I thought he was going to ruin the Movie with the Comic Relief I’m surprised there’s Layers of Humanity especially when Sentinel captures him and Dee and Dee stood up when Bee didn’t want him to stand up because he doesn’t want to see his Friends Hurt, like the Quintessons I’m pretty sure Bee will Develop especially when he losses his Voice in the War, anyway this Movie was amazing, not only is it one of the Best Movies of 2024, but it’s clearly the Best Transformers Movie of all Time, the Voice Casting was Great, the Story with the Evolution of Optimus Prime and Megatron is Interesting and Heartbreaking, Sentinel Prime is one of the Best Modern Villains in a Long Time that he’s definitely giving Homelander Vibes, and the Animation and Setup are Flawless, 10 out of 10, I’m hoping this gets a Trilogy because it deserves it and I would love to see more content from this and the Franchise.
The marketing was definitely all wrong for the movie. With all the transformers shows coming out recently this seemed like one of those DVD releases. Glad I went to see it with my son. As a fan of the original 80s It was much better than expected.
This movie will always have a special spot in my heart I took my son (3) to it and ill never forget during that ending sequence when they become Megatron and Optimus and that music kicked in. He got out of his chair crawled onto my lap, leaned in, and was just focused Will be one of my favorite movies of all time because of that
I respect your Opinion good sir, I gave it 4.3/5 after leaving the theatre, im guessing you didn't enjoy the visuals? The only major thing that comes to mind. Have a good day!
I feel like the movie was ok, better than most transformers stuff currently coming out, but i feel like the reasings for characters actions was very lacking, and the marvel humor didnt help. Like why was optimus ok with completely obliterating sentinals henchmen but then sentinal is too far? Why is bumble bee depicted as not having a brain? And why is shockwave acting like lugnut? Also starscream, a whole archetype of characters in writing, was barely in the film. Maybe im being picky and full of nostalgia, but i feel like if they buckled down and looked more into characterization for each transformer the movie could have been amazing
Took my son because he wanted to see it. I am pretty sure I enjoyed it more than he did.

The way I personally see it is that D-16 was always angry at the system, it was that he believed in SP and he hid his anger like how an adult would, he would lash out at the little things like what happen after the race when he rant to pax,
The moment he realized that the reason why he hid his anger was a lie, he just wanted to tear down the entire system that was made from it, no matter the cost
@@skylerwarren7300 I love the reasoning behind why they’re “Decepticons”; “We will no longer be deceived”.

I also agree, Hemsworth did great. I had a bigger issue with megatrons voice than Optimus.
@deanofcool but Brian Tyree Henry still gave a great performance
@@boopagm8275 if you say so. No shade on the actor, I just don’t think his voice fit megatron.
Facts 💯
the quintessons were mining the entire planet for energon using the miners, they only come and go to pick up thier orders. So they are off planet and have no idea that sentinal was killed....which is why the speech at the end was challenging the quintessons if they return. I imagine that will/would have been the premise of the sequel.
I kinda hope we get a Quintesson spy in the ranks in the sequel, kinda like Tarrantulus in Beast Wars.
@@Gaia_Gaistar That'll probably be Airachnid's job, given she's public enemy number one from both sides now
@@autobotyscorner6404I'm actually surprised Megatron didn't just GO AFTER her after he killed Sentinel.
In the old Sunbow G1 canon - the factions didn't develop until after they drove off the Quints.
They are tropes because THEY WORK. They aren’t re-used just for the hell of it; humans love these ideas
EVERYONE wants to rewrite the wheel...but MOST LACK THE TALENT TO😐
Tropes are tropes because they WORK😑
I actually think the Megatron turn was executed perfectly.
(like how D-16 said that they deserved being hit by Darkwing because they talked back to a supervisor?)
D-16 went trough a lots of suffering, humiliation, an struggle, and he did it because he beleived he was doing the right thing.

Probable plot hole: If their belief is that the strongest lead the High Guard. Why were they helping Megatron when Optimus was winning?

Seriously, it was absurd to see random foot soldiers doing damage to bots as legendary as Megatron with small arms; it makes the whole thing feel like, "Oh, we really don't need Transformers to beat Transformers, let's just use the rifles we made for human conflict."
That, and the other pointless human characters who felt like they were supposed to somehow be audience self-inserts, yet depicting some of the most cringe-inducing character progressions in cinematic history.

@@thedarkemissary Checking in to say, please don’t talk down to people. There is more to a movie not doing well at a box office than just “fans don’t want this”.

This movie was excellent, it's a shame it's not doing well in the box office though😢
Blame the terrible marketing for that.
@@ramiking745that and I think there is a lot of Transformers fatigue with previous movies with this IP
@@DarthVantosit definitely is aimed towards kids during the movie but it still works for adults imo
3:50"An old man like me" Dang, joe we really grown up together
It'll make its money back, that story is nonsense. China only just got the movie yesterday, plus Europe isn't getting it for another few weeks. Paramount screwed the release up, but those markets will turn it around no problem.
Personally, I loved the movie. Bee was a bit much for me, but everyone else was great, especially D-16's descent into Megatron.
Cullen not voicing Pax is probably for the best. The man's 83, so he won't be able to do this for much longer. Hell, David Kaye was OP once, and that was after several years of voicing Megatron.
that really depends, if it just makes it money back (the cost to make it) paramount probably won't do a sequel
Other Joe: 9
Alex: 8
Angry Joe: 9
This failure is one hundred percent on hasbro. The movie is great, well built, well designed and the marketing was absolute trash.
I don't think Hasbro is in charge of marketing the move.
The scenes of Prime/autobote on cybertron fending off the deceptions from Bumblebee 2018 should be an entire movie
I thought Bumblebee 2018 and Rise of the Beasts are good movies.
I thought the heel turn was sudden too but if you watch it again you’re more apt to see the signs for the turn
It was more well done than any of The Big Show's heel turns.
I was hoping you see this joe, I wanted the world to know the trailers where wrong this movie is amazing
Who picked the first trailer should be fired that’s why not many people came
21:30 THIS is what I’ve been saying about Transformers all along, ALEX GETS IT.
No
The way Megatron vs Sentinal ended had me agape. Was shocked to see it go down that way in a kids movie, with a cinema full of children 😮
This movie is going to go the speed racer route, where its considered a flop now but 10 years from now it'll be a cult classic
The movie isn't out in the UK yet so there is still time for more money
Just went to see it, had a great time. I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't been
Everybody PLEASE go and see this movie. It 1000% deserves a sequel.
This film was a huge pleasant surprise I saw it a week before it came out
And the trailers didn’t do this movie justice at alll!
How did i know Alex was going to be the one with the lowest score…
This movie was awesome, genuinely one of the better movies I’ve seen this year, shame it’s not getting the love it deserves.
15:30 There is some suggestion (later in the movie by Elita) that Orion's actions are being "guided" - and every "reckless" action by Orion early on is part of a sequence that takes him Forrest Gump style to the key item he needs to complete his stated quest (the little hologram device inside Steve)
Hey, if you see some really bad scores from users, probably are the Latin american audience for the bad spanish dub, I apologize in advance 😅
After hearing the good things, then just forget the trailer and go watch it
@@Rozemyne2314 I plan to, but Im just 1 person with no following, its not like I can have any impact on Hasbros colossal screw up with the trailer
@@timslack7568 But if more are like you and decide to go see it after changing their mind… we might see an impact after all. We can only hope.
@@timslack7568 you gotta believe you have the touch and the power. Ive had to convince my fam to go watch and then they liked it
I think it was more so that they saw how Megatron despite not being stronger than Sentinel Prime refused to bow
transformers "fans" who refuse to give the film a chance are killing the franchise. if ya'll want more transformers you have to start trying harder.
Disgusting comment you go watch it for "fans" instead. Emotional manipulation to watch a mid movie is not the way. Try harder the heck does that mean.
Ive got to see This Movie in IMAX 3D with my dad. We had the whole Auditourim by ourselfs it was a great exprence
I'm so grateful she convinced me to go
I liked it. It deserves more praise. All they have to do now is adapt WoC for the sequel and FoC for the third movie. EASY MONEY ✅
They need to make a full movie that is just like the intro to the Bumblebee movie with Frank Welker and Peter Cullen while they're still able to. Briefly seeing all the transformers on Cybertron with that quality CGI was such a tease.
Can't wait for the Wild Robot review.
Yeah right 😆
Thank you for your honesty and for taking the time to review our film.
Speak for yourself. 87 one was awesome!🎉
I love beast wars from the 90s. I'm looking forward to this movie.
Proud of you Joe marry Christmas
This Transformers movie is likely to be better than Bumblebee. I mean, it's a cgi animated film that takes place before the war with the Autobots and Decepticons.
Starscream was the worse character. In less than 5 minutes he went from a rebel warlord type character to megatrons lackey
The idea was good but agreed the concept was too rushed... then again his sudden turn is indicative of Starscream's cowardice?
But at the same time, this have alrady happened in the Aligned continuty, and the War for Cybertron games. In WFC Starscream was a Sky commander of an orbital statsion, which Megatron invaded, beat Starscream to scrap, took his men, his supply of dark energon. Stasrcream swore alliance to Megatron in exchange for power, and for his life (and he wanted Megatron to teach him how to control dark enrgon)
Something similar happened in the Aligned continuity too.
With amazing marketing like "FOUR BEST FRIENDS" who would've expected this film to flop!?
😂😂
I agree with you, Joe. I wasn't interested in seeing this movie with my friend and his daughter. But once I sat down in the chair and started watching it. It won me over and then I felt bad because I knew it wasn't going to make money. If other people felt the same way as I did
Feels like great movies like this have some higher up that doesn't want it to succeed. I'd put this movie beside Wolverine and Deadpool for best movies of the year :P
Dude this movie was soooo good! Go see it!
Which Transformer do you like the best?
D16 voice was fucking great
There’s 3 Things I have to clarify, 1.
Last of us 2 trailer just released, why did you do John Wick’s trailer reaction and not Last Of Us?
They literally stated at the start of this video why things are behind.
John wick trailer? You mean ballerina?
They might have become incels grifters
14:09 Cubans! Lmao almost spit out my drink laughing
Watch transformers prime
My fav TF series is TFP, and I love that TF One takes a lots of lore/story elements from the Aligned continuty the continuty TFP takes place in.
The marketing was definitely all wrong for the movie. With all the transformers shows coming out recently this seemed like one of those DVD releases. Glad I went to see it with my son. As a fan of the original 80s It was much better than expected.
Where is last of us 2 trailer, everyone has been waiting for your reaction!!!!
This movie will always have a special spot in my heart
I took my son (3) to it and ill never forget during that ending sequence when they become Megatron and Optimus and that music kicked in. He got out of his chair crawled onto my lap, leaned in, and was just focused
Will be one of my favorite movies of all time because of that
Can we just all agree that there are no humans in this one?
Yes, I also have eyes.
So glad it got the seal of approval, look forward to seeing it when it, uhm, streams.
Honestly I thought it was very overrated, I enjoyed it as a Transformers fan but I didn’t find it mind blowing. I gave it a 6/10 ✅
I respect your Opinion good sir, I gave it 4.3/5 after leaving the theatre, im guessing you didn't enjoy the visuals? The only major thing that comes to mind. Have a good day!
@@orge9711 writing, comedy, megatrons turn etc. I actually liked the visuals for the most part
@@austinmedz98 aight thanks for sharing dude! Love to hear others opinions on things
