  • 4x NBA All-Star Kemba Walker is joining EuroLeague’s side AS Monaco. Injuries have cost him his NBA career, but the point guard has chosen a path that many American players avoid - signing in Europe. BasketNews’ Augustas Suliauskas analyzes why Kemba made the right move to live and hoop in Monaco & why more borderline NBA players should try it.

There is an old saying in my country: You cant teach new tricks to old dogs.
I think Kemba will struggle in Europe The game is more physical, more tactical and his style of play doesnt actually fit. BUT because he is on a team that can more likely then not hide him, its worth the risk. Could you imagine him replacing Micic on Efes?
And thats the big reason not many older NBA vets come to Europe. If you fizzle out of the NBA in your 30's you can still say: "Well, I had a good career, its time to end it!" It would be way more embarrasing (for American former Allstarts), to come to Europe and not be more then a rotation player. So they prefer to retire, or sit on the bench the entire season for the vet min, then come to Europe, earn more, play more, but not be a star.

Players should play anywhere they can. Bring the global game closer together. More stars. Recruit from overseas clubs. It shouldn't be a big deal for a player to play for the ABA, develop in a system that works for them - because so much talent is lost from players not being utilized - then head back. Yeah, EuroLeague is not easy street. I do agree with the original video point, more players should consider Europe, but the reason you never here about Americans in Europe is because that is where borderline NBA players go to die. Not saying European league tougher than NBA, no no no. But, by the time an NBA player has decided to go to Europe they are pretty busted. Its not the Chinese or some other South east Asian league, where Jimmer Fredette can average 40. Europe is a different, man's league

I think that many of the reasons you state in the video sound pretty logical to us mere mortals, for most NBA players are really just an afterthought. Especially for NBA players who once were stars. They have different priorities and I would guess that vanity is also part of the mix. Kemba is pretty low profile so I could see him accepting a role which is not him scoring 25ppg (and using this as a stepping stone for a possible NBA comeback). But I'd guess that most NBA players who once were decidedly NBA level would like to do just that, i.e. use their time in Europe as a stepping stone and that would probably come in the form of selfish play and focusing too much on scoring.

In Euroleague American players without European experience usually are disappointing. This is why European coaches if they choose a player form NBA they want players like Mirotic and Hezonja. To give you an example in Euroleague the trasnfers of Willy and Juan Hernangomez are considering most significant than Kempa's who has to fight for his minutes because Monaco has already 3 Euroleague Stars in guards...
PS : Euroleague year after year is becoming stronger, Europe has start to poduce players like Jokic,Antetokounmpo,Doncic, Wembanyama . Big teams are investings in their facilities and scouting and probably from next year Saudi Arabi and Qatar will invest in European Basketball, if this happens balances will change.

@@AugustasSuliauskas I’ve been starting to watch Euroleague this past year. I like the NBa more but still enjoyed the times I watched European ball. I do feel the product coverage wise can be better.
One thing I noticed is when I watch games, there is usually only like one guy doing the play by play. I can live with it but same time I admit as someone who is used to watching games from any sport with two commentators it can be a bit akward and cheap.
I feel like if they simply do that and just try to get better deals to broadcast and advertise the league, it can grow much better.
I think the tiger issue is money just isn’t appealing for many NBA players to leave for Europe. I feel like the league has to grow so that contracts for stars can go 10-20 million. The reason these days no one goes to Europe is because today's NBA players have no clue when to call quits in NBA. There are so many former NBA players who are not being signed by NBA teams, and those players still insist, they can play in NBA. No, if you are not being signed (barring some political nonsense) you can no longer play in NBA. Their egos are so messed up, that they think they are too good for Europe or other regions. If one thinks he can still play at NBA level, yet no one is signing him, go and try your luck in Europe. There are some high level teams and European leagues are quite tough. I'm not saying that in the past NBA players were eager to play in Europe, no. But at least back in a day a player knew when to retire, instead of going around and telling everyone they can still play. Teams are not stupid, they have scouts who evaluate if one player or the other brings value to the team. If they are not signing you, that means you cannot play at NBA level. Period

NBA is becoming more of an entertainment league than an actual basketball league.
More and more money into the NBA will be good for the players but that’s also a disincentive for players to actually try to improve. Once they got the bag, they stop trying. Is that good for the fans to watch?
After all, the fans have the power. Without the fans, these athletes and league are nothing. And notice how the viewership and ratings declined ever since.
If you think that’s sustainable, I disagree.

You went to Monaco, one of the greatest city to live ,favorable tax laws, live by the view of the sea, still earn a decent chunk amount of money. What else could you ask for? People acting like this is a downgrade. If you dont get a max contract or medium level contract in the NBA, you might as well go play oversea. Better standard of living.

NBA buyout guys should probably default to playing in Europe. They'll probably get better money and play more meaningful basketball. Especially guys who used to be good or very good that the NBA has given up on like Kemba. Euroleague is good basketball, and if an elite player has lost a step but can still compete with good players, Europe seems like a great idea.

Lewis Hamilton, Charles LeClerc, Max Verstappen and dozens of other major European sports icons live in Monaco. Definitely a place for the wealthy to enjoy the finer things in life. Kemba won't be living a bad life, for sure.

If Euroleague can make more money hopefully they can increase the pay as well. If top players can get 10-20 million a year, more older NBA stars or even some decent players might consider the Euroleague.
That’s why as much as I hate how Saudi Oil money is influencing football, it actually might help European basketball if they invest some money into the sport.
I agree that these older NBA stars or even decent role players should come to the Euroleague lore. It can help the quality of basketball worldwide and in Europe obviously.

Can Dwight Howard get a Job with Monaco? Why did he go to Japan the dude looks like he can still play in the NBA! I suppose his skill set of Bigman with good defense but no 3pt shot just isn't needed anymore in NBA.

It will be a very bad look for the euroleague if an old kemba can dominate. 😅

Well it would be tougher for him to score inside considering there’s no defensive 3 sec violations in the Euroleague

Why? The best european players are all in the NBA where they can get 10 times the money because the fanbase is bigger. Talent follows money. Think of it this way : of the 400 NBA spots, half are way too good for euroleague contracts, but the bottom 50 role and bench players would not get minutes in a euroleague team.
