I am an olympiacos fan but I still remember seeing Dominique playing. Past his prime even, my God he was in another league miles above the basketball played in Europe. Even Giannakopouloi are rivals, that move they did inspired thousands of kids to play basketball. Do you think that had nothing to do with Greece winning Eurobasket of 2005? Not in the scope of Gallis and Yannakis, but it did played a minor role because it raised the bar. So credit to them that was their legacy and it is fair to be said. Can you imagine what Lebron would do if he was to play for his final year in Europe to the country's basketball culture? Guys I think you missed the most important reason.
The impact of a star playing in europe is really crazy, and I don't think people understand it. France have so many good players and rising young players because TP became a star a played in the French national team. Look at all the new generation of French player, Wemby for example, fan of the Spurs. And so much more French kids chose basketball over football (by far the national sport) because of him.
I would love to see what former Celtic MVP candidate Isaiah Thomas would be able to do in the Euroleague. When Shane Larkin is doing so well. But he should have done that years ago. And by now it's probably too late.
I definitely believe there’s an alternate universe where IT goes overseas way earlier and he has a legendary overseas career and it probably happens 9/10 times you run the scenario
Besides the reasons above I think a lot of players just want to retire sooner than later. Going to play in a country halfway along the world for a year or 2 more for what's essentially pennies compared to what you've made in your career isn't ideal. There's also the fact that superstars (actual superstars not guys like Ibaka) used to stay loyal in one team and get rewarded with a farewell tour at the end of their careers. Guys like Kobe, Duncan, Wade Dirk etc
Great video! You had the right arguments! Congratulations from a Panathinaikos fan! We had many examples that support your opinion in Europe, like Dominique or Bob Mcadou.

The Euroleague should become THE Best basketball league in the world in the future, just like the UEFA Champions League Football-Soccer. For this it is essential to include teams from Paris and London soon (with Paris-Bercy Arena and O2 Arena)
England has proved time and time again that they don't appreciate basketball. In all fairness , who ever wants to join, let them become part of it. Don't push anyone.
If you're washed for Nba likely you're washed for Europe too. Allen Iverson was mediocre in Eurocup, Barea made Estudiantes worse in 2021, Stoudemire was among the very best good'ol but he only did well in BCL, Kemba so far is the worst player in Monaco roster.
I think your examples show that it also depends on position and height. Small players, like barea and kemba struggle in any setting, once their athleticism is gone, despite being solid shooters. L7
Exactly. EL cannot be the garbage bag of the NBA. If a NBA star is between the ages 32-35, depending on his physical status, he could be accepted but players like the grand daddy Dwight Howard, one must be out of his mind to sign him; that would definitely be a total failure. Europe should pursue to develop their own stars instead of providing place for thrash NBA players .

Well, yeah it's a totally different story for European player to retire in Euroleague and for American, who never played outside the USA + older guys have families, kids and so on
There are like 50 nba players who are comfortably riding the bench with zero rush to make any improvements, i would really like to see someone like Mo Bamba,Bruno Fernando,Usman Garuba,Rudy Gay in Europe
I think the average European (football fan and not a basketball fan) would not notice the average stars of the NBA (Durant, Harden, etc...) on the streets, because football is still the number one priority in Europe. Except with the European basketball fans - probably they would. 🙂
I am an anonymous pro athlete that has been fortunate enough to play in both leagues. Honestly euroleague is great, but they’re still some teams that don’t pay on time and won’t pay until you go to court. That is why a lot of the American athletes decide to go to China. Which has a shorter season , more money, and they pay on time. If you have love for the game though. Then euroleague would be a better option to end your career.
I would really like a video from you talking about the change that Euroleague should give to every team that finishes top 2 in their domestic league. It’s kinda unfair for teams that are not it euroleague going far or winning their league and not getting a Euroleague spot.
I don't think so tbh, most of the time they won't care and therefore won't put any effort in the Euroleague. Ofc not everyone falls under this, some NBA players who LOVE the game absolutely would. If anything imo all the European players should retire in Europe.
10:43 I really want to see Howard come to Europe to one of the Greek teams like olympiacos because we really need a good center and not only that if he does come to olympiacos and he still plays well he will be treated very well by the fans
The top euro salary is $4m and I think only two players make over $3m. The nba veteran minimum (over ten years of experience) is about $3.3m. A bench/rotation player can expect about $10m. But there are other considerations of course.
About the point 4 Fewer Games: It's true, but not true. You are playing mainly in an national League (Spain, Germany Greece..etc) around 30-40 games - there you have to qualify to the EuroLeague, the next season, with good results. The Euro League is an international tournament next to national league. So you have to play on weekends for national league and on wednesday for the international league. The team has around 70 games (plus playoffs).
yep indeed. german league has 34 regular season games, national cup games (which can be like 10 or so games) and if you have european competition the tally can go up by 20+ games (there are lower level european competitons) and then playoffs come on top. the european competion is kinda a weird web since they aren t organized hierarchically by the same organizers, so there isn t an official "tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 european competition" like in football with champions league, europa league and conference league. The "king" euroleague originated from a split of the big clubs from europe from ULEB (the basketball equivalent of UEFA), running their own european competition. Basically these basketball clubs succeeded in what some of the big football clubs tried to achieve when they wanted their own "superleague". this league is essentially an invitational competitions. it has 18 spots, of which 12 are permanently given to certain big household names (bayern munich, barcelona, real madrid, olympiakos etc.) and 6 wild cards where teams are subject to change every year (and i have no idea how these are decided). So basically, you can only agree "to just play in european competition" if you manage to snag a spot of one of those 12 permanent teams (and they are the ones who can afford the biggest contracts too). Below that there are european competitions which are either organized by FIBA europe (champions league, europe cup) or ULEB (EuroCup) [btw why do 2 names need to be so similar smh], where you need to qualify for each season through the national league. so ye most teams cannot afford to sign someone to "just play the big games" because they cannot guarantee those big games and these teams won t be willing to sign someone who just wants to play "the most important games" and let others do the job in normal games.
Every NBA player that can go and finesse the Euro league should do so. No one cares about atmosphere if the money isn’t right. But why campaign for NBA leftovers when you are developing the dominant basketball stars over there in Europe? He actually made what is equal to $12 million a season in the NBA. Spanish media had several articles about it, where they showed that the per season salary would equal to $12 million per year in the way the NBA counts it. Also, if we go back in the day, to the '90s to 2010s, and factor inflation to today's money, then there have been lots of EuroLeague players that made in the 8 to 10+ million range per season, in how the NBA counts salary.
