    INTPs walk around with a sense of not being fully understood, despite their best efforts. Videos like this are why we're overrepresented in this space...it feels so good to be seen. 😊

      I've have often speculated about why certain types seem far more interested in typology. This theory is quite plausible. Any type who is more likely to be misunderstood or disconnected from people in that way would value these explanations much more. I think it's also more common for certain types to think about people in this archetypical way too ~ Nathan

      @Kent Hartig yeah, I've neglected to bring up mbti around people I know mainly due to this very reason (granted I only know like 2 people). Almost like the people most into typology are hardest to meet in the real world especially if you're an introvert

      @@lovewho Typing is THE way for INTPs to develop that unbearable noisy baby Fe of ours. Try to connect with others' emotions and you'll probably end frustrated; try to understand, categorize, predict and emulate them (and their outcomes) and you'll have a chance of success. It's a long walkaround, but with time and practice it can become somehow real. If it looks like a feeling, walks like a feeling and smells like a feeling it must be a feeling, right? ~ NotNathan

    This is such a wonderfully perfect and complete description of my INTP son. 21 would be "goofy". A lot of INTPs are born teachers, I think, both because they are so verbally articulate and also because 4th function Fe can give an endearing and safe vibe. This can make the pedantry much less grating than when it comes (for example) from an ExTJ. And Ne makes them witty, perhaps also amusingly flaky at times.
    I had a wonderful highschool history teacher who was an INTP. He was obsessed with the Napoleonic wars, but somehow the class was so peaceful.
    This is the best MBTI channel.

    • @lovewho
      @lovewho  ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Funnily enough, goofy was a word that I considered including!
      In previous videos I've spoken about how the archetypical role of teacher (in whatever form it takes) represents a well-developed and fully realised INTP. It allows them to take their knowledge and insights and share them in that Fe way. Also, it counteracts one of their weaknesses - not being action oriented. By being conduits for knowledge in others they can out-source the effort of implementing it, so to speak ~ Nathan

      I am INTP. I can identify with the Teacher trait, but only as a 1 on 1 tutor, because I can easily find the correct level at which to interact with the other person and provide appropriate explanations and analogies that neither talk down nor overwhelm the other.

    I’ll give you an example of how an INTP relates to the world. In college, I was an engineer who would often do my homework assignments sitting in large lecture halls for classes that were outside my major and for which I was not enrolled.
    I enjoyed listening to the lectures while I worked on the math problems that were part of my major. One day, in an economics class, they talked about a “new” form of packaging that allowed milk to sit unrefridgerated on shelves for 6 months.
    The economics professor said that they had to market it to people who enjoyed camping and young mothers who wanted to pack milk for their children while on the go because most people wouldn’t buy milk outside of the dairy case.
    As an INTP, once I learned the packing existed, I was sold. You can do away with refrigerated dairy trucks, the dairy cases in the stores, and all the energy wasted while having milk that lasted months instead of days. You even avoided frequent trips to the store for milk as you could buy three months at a time and keep it on the shelf in your pantry instead of taking up space in the fridge.
    So many people want to do the things they always have done. They want to keep their routines. They would never accept room temperature milk from a box in a random aisle. If society were only INTPs, one day an announcement would be made listing the benefits of making the switch and 90% of INTPs would jump on board if the logic was sound.
    This is why the world doesn’t always make sense to an INTP.

    It's helped me so much to realize I'm an INTP after years of thinking I was extroverted and judgmental. I really was neither of those things but I'd developed them as means of coping with feeling like an outside all the time. I can still be judgmental of people (and systems) for being irrational and not having good answers though. But knowing I'm not a natural extrovert has helped me be more comfortable with myself and know that I just need to make more of an effort if I want to get out and be with others.

      People can mistype themselves in so many different ways. I often advise that people take their time when typing themselves for this reason. It's so easy to assume you're a certain way only to find out it was the external circumstances that caused you to act that way, a way that is not natural for you. 19/20. All good points, with the possible exception of "zen."
    I particularly liked #2. I remember the moment, decades ago, when I read that INTPs tend to use qualifiers in their verbiage. I played back every conversation I'd ever had in my life and it suddenly clicked. Now, I notice myself doing it in real time, in both verbal and written conversations.
    As for "zen"... that one's tricky. "Zen" is often a term used for physical actions taken without conscious thought... which isn't our strong suit. The noise in our brains isn't easily silenced, and our Ne is only half-controlled at best, tempting us with one rabbit hole after another. If we seem unbothered, it's likely we either didn't notice the problem or we ignored it because we find it uninteresting relative to our current pursuit... or we're scared to face the problem head-on and we're distracting ourselves so as not to feel our feelings.
    I think there's a duality to our emotions that most other types overlooks. We like gallows humor, I think, because it exemplifies that duality. Emotions rarely stand on their own, but usually carry their opposite with them. Happiness brings anticipation and/or memory of loss. We can be in a crowd of people and feel more isolated and alone than when we're actually alone. We find joy in things other people find mundane and we find mundanity in things in which other people find joy.

      This is a good point. I meant zen in the sense of detachment from things, but I agree that the action part doesn't fit as neatly. That being said, there is a way to marry those things. Abraham Lincoln (who I consider to be an INTP) would often delay taking action, to the point where it would drive the more forceful and proactive people around him nuts. He'd wait until there was sufficient momentum behind the action he took, which often meant that the public were supporting it. That way he'd ride the wave of life more often than swimming against the tide. To me, that seems to be a zen-like approach that someone who's not naturally forceful and action-oriented would take! ~ Nathan

      @@lovewho Zen for me is a state when a person becomes calm in existing, no ups and downs emotion, love and hate with people in his life, closeness and distance with world. The analyzing and thinking is done. He understands the world and himself thoroughly.
      I do agree that intps are slow to embrace or act until reaching a threshold (or never reaching it). It is often seen as backwards, slow, or disinterested on surface level. Is it Zen? I am not so sure. I personally have not felt zen, not inside, for close to 60 years.

    • @jimclayson
      @jimclayson ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lovewho True enough... although I think of it as more "otherwise occupied" than "zen." Our focus is rarely in line with those around us, so we may be quite calm and rational while others are falling apart... or we may be agitated because none of our close associates has any interest in or furthering their understanding of time dilation and how it directly results in gravitational fields, leaving everyone around us wondering what kind of mental malfunction we're having or what kind of drugs we must be on... or calling us conspiracy theorists when we observe that, based on the available data, there was more than one shooter at the JFK assassination and Oswald clearly wasn't one of them (all based on simple math, by the way). @@lovewho i agreed with everything you’ve even said prior in the video about intp’s being “zen”. as an intp, i can very easily detach myself from reality and have a birds eye view like you said. on top of that, i always restrain myself from doing anything that i consciously know will harm someone (mental or physically) unless i ABSOLUTELY have to. sometimes to the point where i wait too long. but never act off of impulse. i am also able to calm myself down and i do this very easily by thinking of ways the other person is justified in their actions from their perspective.
      I understand that everyone’s different, and it seems like intps in particular can be drastically different from one another. this could just come down to life experience (long story short, i grew up in a very militant household and did martial arts for 14 years while training in china and japan). but i feel like even with my experience in being able to control myself, it was never hard to restrain myself. i tend to be a very passive person by nature, i only act out when i’m pushed too far for way too long. and at that point i explode with everything i got with no restraint. but that takes a LOT of effort.
      maybe zen isn’t the best word, but as of rn i cant think of a better way to describe my temperament in that way.

I love studying and knowing everything about my endeavors, more than doing it. When I felt like I had known enough I tend to lose interest. Then again, this is also why I always have something in the background subconscious. Right now my obsession is swimming (pretty technical). I am also eyeing golf because I was defeated by it 20 years ago. I have wanted to learn cycling, snowboarding, and rock climbing for 10/15 years. I am very risk aware therefore I have to watch enough body in action and about the endeavor before I reach a point to try. I had a fear of water for close to 50 years. In U.K we have general election this week. I've attended several "Hustings" (like "Town halls", for the non-Brits), mostly to protest for Palestine, but I've also attended the hustings themselves.
    Yesterday the 3 main parties boycotted, leaving 4 minor parties, 3 right-wing (Christian People's Alliance, Social Democrats & Reform UK) and 1 left (Greens). It was poorly moderated, so there was unusually high amount of "audience participation", but a very British level of decorum was still maintained.
    For sooo much of the 90 minutes my mouth was the largest bees nest in the world, as I tried not to constantly interrupt the absurd things being spouted by wilfully ignorant people, but several times I refused to hold myself back and had to correct or simply ask the question that challenged the logic of their silliness. It's just sooo hard to let silliness go unchallenged, especially when there's an audience of ~90 people.

    I think what bothers me most is the lack of definined boundaries or appropriate definitions in conceptual arguments. What means one thing to one group, might have a different meaning in another group. This leaves people talking past eachother and leads to emotional outbursts or ad hominem attacks.
    The majority of people focus on one tree in a forest and rarely consider that each tree individually is part of a whole. It narrows perspective and while this might be advantageous, if thats your only goal, fixation obscures the interconnectiveness all individuals play in the collective.
    Definining your words leads to clarrification and understanding of context. Why read your mind, when you can communicate your thoughts?

    (INTJ) I think of all the J vs P types, our two types are probably the closest, and there are a great many thing an INTJ can relate to here. As a tech writer and editor, however, I find INTPs can be infuriating.
    Their text is often inelegant and messy, taking constant twists and turns (with plenty of annoying interjections like this), as the reader is expected to follow the winding trail of their internal logic. Especially with documentation and how-to guides, I would much prefer something from an ISTJ, who will probably have an INTP-like nerdiness, but understand the need for cohesive structure.

    • @lovewho
      @lovewho  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really fascinating! I would like to look into this more actually and see whether there are noticable differences between the writing styles of the various types. • @cyberneticbutterfly8506
      @cyberneticbutterfly8506 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you'll find that if you can articulate a proof of how a certain aspect of their writing is flawed, INTPs will feel so embarrassed by failing at their lead function that they'll never make that mistake again.

    • @johnknight9150
      @johnknight9150 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cyberneticbutterfly8506 It would take work and a lot of discipline (though it would be well worth it). The main issue, as far as I can tell, is the internal logic of Ti combined with the explorative nature of Ne. It has a kind of 'come with me on my magical journey' nature, which does appeal to some types, but most people won't be able to follow it. The primary skill a writer like that needs to learn is structural elegance, which usually comes from simplicity and omitting needless information.

    • @johnknight9150
      @johnknight9150 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @berry Could you expand on what you don't like about your writing when you read it later? (That can be a good thing, however, real writing is in the revision, not the drafting.) I don't know if it will be of use to you, but perhaps I can share the chief points of my writing process over the years, and what I've found makes for good copy that is ready to publish.
      For an INTP I would say concentrate on structure more than you would have thought to otherwise. Forget about the internal logic for the moment, you INTPs will probably have that down pat, but look at the overall structure of the document, the size of the paragraphs, the use of headings, and so on.
      It might sound strange, but how does your text *look*? Great text looks pretty and is easy to digest. When someone writes huge paragraphs with difficult sentences, it could be off-putting despite having the best ideas in the world. I need my text to be pretty. I need it to snap together like haiku. So how do I do that?
      Firstly, I don't write in a word processor, and I only use pen-and-paper for taking notes. I usually write in raw text ASCII -- most of the magazines I've written for use ASCII anyway -- so something like Notepad is what I go for, but slightly fancier. I use ASCII text editors like KWrite or Gedit under Linux, using a nice colour scheme and font so it's not headache-inducing and feels pleasant to write in.
      Why do I write in raw text? Because I need to chop and change things quickly. I need to move around text without the formatting of a word processor getting in the way, and it helps to remove the visual distractions of all that superfluous interface. I particularly need to break paragraphs into pieces and shuffle sentences around, and move this paragraph above that paragraph, where doing so in a word processor is a constant battle against the formatting.
      The next bit is the cutting -- and chances are that you will be over an assigned word count anyway. At the bottom of the page I write CUTTING ROOM FLOOR, and anything I cut gets pasted under that heading. The first rule you see in editing is usually 'omit needless words', and the first thing an editor will ask you to do is cut anything unnecessary. So go through your text and cut anything like redundant syntax, and if there's a shorter way of writing your sentence, shorten it. As for any ideas that aren't 100% necessary (so we're mostly talking whole sentences and paragraphs here), try cutting them and pasting them in the cutting room floor section.
      Once you've done that, your text will be very tight, but probably a bit too short and clippy and lacking soul. Plenty of editors will run with that no worries, but for a magic formula, what I've found hits the spot for an editor is to strip it all the way to bare metal then come back one step. Stripping it all the way back will bring you under the assigned word count, and then when you look in the cutting room floor, you can find a few things to put back in that will give your text back its colour and soul while still being tight and nicely structured.
      *Then* use a word processor at the end to catch your typos and spelling mistakes. ;-)

      Yes it is
      INTPs have the most compatibility with ENTJs and second most compatibility with INTJs. Think of two puzzles pieces that fit perfectly together, they are a great match, a lot of great things can come out of it. These type of relationships are not only about love but also about growth since these two types are almost shadows of each other. One person's weak areas will be compensated by the other person. But there are some common weak areas such as neither of them is an initiator type, both are withdrawn, unless they both work on their feelings , not being aware of their own emotions or low EQ can adversely affect the relationship. So the only thing I will advise that both of you work on your EQ and refrain from turing arguments into a competition of who is right, as both type has inclination to think only they are right, everyone else is wrong

    I disagree with the description of intps as abstract.
    The the ne authority completely develops in their thirties,the process beginning around adolescence.
    Ne is also much more closely attached to fe than ti because it's an extraverted lens of perception linked to an extraverted judging cognitive function fe.
    Though indeed it does broaden the perspective of ti and improve the adaptability of ti frameworks to new paradigms as well as disrupt the pattern schemes (comfort zones😉)
    Of si child.
    Intps also use ne pessimistically not that that's a bad thing.
    They use the foresight of ne to avoid pitfalls and undesirable out comes than to seek the realization of possibilities.
    Though they can use it optimisticly (exploration, experimentation and visions realization)
    Sort of like how entps use ti authority
    To use the negative elimination method of seeking truth.(this and that is false therefore what so ever remains must be true as opposed to that is true therefore whatever fails to comply must either be false or closer to the truth)
    Rather intps incline more towards being empirical sentinels of knowledge.
    And ti hero doesn't mean ti hero users are rationalists that seems to be an arrogant assumption (pride and arrogance are not the same the inability to recognize other perspectives is arrogance)
    Some ti users seek truth in various ways of life like religion.and use ti in service of a greater text.(not all ti users give their intellect more authority than it's due)

    I'm INTP, and you've got me sussed. But the bit about us being pedantic? Perhaps in the sense of the origin of the word - making a show of one's knowledge, (from the French root pedant), in the sense we like debate and discussion. But in the modern sense of going into unnecessary, annoying and tedious detail, and being in any way boring? Surely not!

    Quick witted? I feel like the master of the "know what I should have said" 5 minutes later. It's the one thing I envy about my INTJ friends.

      INTPs are never sure of themselves. Something that I've seen for decades in the INTP community. Yeah, I'm olds as fuck. In the beginning days of the Internet as we know it, there was an email list (it still exists in some form, but email is a lost art now, and it's rarely active now unfortunately), and we had fun things like "So and so is my favorite INTP, I'll kill you last", which lead to another chain on how he could be killed last, since the person saying so was also INTP. Unfortunately the person to be killed last managed to kill himself by locking himself out on a second story balcony to go smoke and fell to his death trying to get down.

      That's a good point actually. Also, that's an awful feeling, realising that you had the perfect response but far too late. I think this is something that INTPs get much better at as time goes on though! ~ Nathan
