I’m korean, and it’s honestly kind of heartbreaking to see some of these clips. While korea is mostly known as kpop or food or similar things, i don’t think any of them actually trues to see what’s inside the shell. We have a very tragic and hardworking history, such as getting colonized by the japanese empire during ww2(trust me, many of the things they did were inhumane), or the korean war. They probably have no idea how sad it actually is to be in war 24/7 365 days(as they never officially ‘ended’ the war) or knowing that your close family relatives are somewhere up in the north, probably living a tragic life, and you can’t do anything about it. They don’t know the perseverance of our ancestors as they somehow managed to save joseon for a long time from all the constant attacks from china and japan. Not just our history, even about how so many teenagers are ruining their life studying 14 hours a day which hurts your body critically, just to get into a med school, but eventually falling apart from the depression and the unbearable pressure from its society. They don’t know ‘korea’. They think they do, it makes me laugh. This applies to the majority of people on the internet these days as well. If you really want to know about korea, you should study its history first. I’m not saying that you can’t enjoy korea’s culture without getting really deep into it, just don’t make it your whole personality or act like you’re a damn master of korean culture just because you liked kpop for a few years.

Honestly. After listening to kpop I actually started getting into Asian culture. Not just Korean, but all types of Asian culture. Mostly Korean, but all Asian culture is important. I think Asian culture is really cool. So I tried learning an I know a little, but would NEVER take it this far. I’m korean, and it’s honestly kind of heartbreaking to see some of these clips. While korea is mostly known as kpop or food or similar things, i don’t think any of them actually trues to see what’s inside the shell. We have a very tragic and hardworking history, such as getting colonized by the japanese empire during ww2(trust me, many of the things they did were inhumane), or the korean war. They probably have no idea how sad it actually is to be in war 24/7 365 days(as they never officially ‘ended’ the war) or knowing that your close family relatives are somewhere up in the north, probably living a tragic life, and you can’t do anything about it. They don’t know the perseverance of our ancestors as they somehow managed to save joseon for a long time from all the constant attacks from china and japan. Not just our history, even about how so many teenagers are ruining their life studying 14 hours a day which hurts your body critically, just to get into a med school, but eventually falling apart from the depression and the unbearable pressure from its society. They don’t know ‘korea’. They think they do, it makes me laugh. This applies to the majority of people on the internet these days as well. If you really want to know about korea, you should study its history first. I’m not saying that you can’t enjoy korea’s culture without getting really deep into it, just don’t make it your whole personality or act like you’re a damn master of korean culture just because you liked kpop for a few years.

I don't even like K-pop or K-drama but for some reason they expect me to be some expert on this stuff while they show off how much of an 'expert' they are on Korean culture... it's sooo annoying!!

It is stupid (unless you state that you are going to impressionate A STEREOTYPE and not a reality)...this goes to all languages just like japanese where people talk with an exaggerated high pitched voice just like the anime voices. Or talking on a exaggerated angry voice when speaking Russian or German/talking with an exaggerated dumb voice tone when speaking chinese...most of the times people tend to follow what they see in movies but they forget that they do not equal to reality most of the times. I don't see a problem with that when it is for inoffensive jokes but when you want to learn a language for real, the first thing you need to realize is that normal x country citizens ARE NOT THE WAY MOVIES/MEDIA MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE (at least not in such an exaggerated way)
