Hellfire is considered to be Disney's darkest song. I personally love it. Frollo is the one Disney villain that no one talks about these days but should.
Same here. Frollo deserves more credit as a villain, in both the animated movie and musical. Most Disney villains you don't really have to worry about in the real world, but a man who sees himself above those he's supposed to help and abuses his position of power is sadly pretty common.
He sounds so full of guilt and anger, it's a realistic version of the song. A man of faith at his lowest point and turning himself over to it. Brilliant performance!!
Frollo is not a man of faith, though. It is a common misconception that Frollo is a priest. He is a judge as per his name. As with French society at the time, the church and state are quite intertwined, but as evident with Frollo's interaction with the bishop, he is in a separate hierarchy. He is really just a self righteous man and not particularly about faith.
@@Licht.von.Stein. Yeah. Though he uses god and righteousness as some sort of smokescreen, that's what I meant. You don’t have to rely on just shouting the line to get the emotion across. The vocals follows the song in respect to what is written, and you add the emotion by changing the quality of your voice as well as inflection. I also don’t think the shouting fits the emotion Frollo is feeling as he is asking for forgiveness while trying to remove the blame (even if he continues to blame everyone but himself). The rhythm at the end is too lackadaisical since Frollo is very strict in nature and attempting to remain “free from sin” (again hypocritical throughout). The song is the moment when frollo acknowledges his weakness to lust, and he feels his pious self righteousness battling his human desires, which put him in the same class as the common sinner. This is breaking him, and that his lust is for a gypsy makes it even worse, and he feels that she is using her evil wiles to seduce and manipulate him. What's interesting is that Frollo was actually very young in the original novel. He was like in his mid 30's in the original book, he was also the Archdeacon not a judge
WOW. I absolutely love the OST version with the legendary Tony Jay but this incredibly talented vocalist right here literally sounded like he was being tortured by his conflicting emotions. This Hellfire doesn’t have the great visuals that the original movie had, but with this guy’s performance, they might as well. Like, hot damn (pun intended), that was awesome
I personally think he's too collected in his portrayal. Frollo is torn apart by his lust and his own self righteousness. He feels as if he's at the brink of eternal damnation and is trying desperately to justify his falling. I dont feel that here. Good voice though
I disagree. I think he did amazing. Honestly it made me really contemplate the song even though I've heard the original a hundred times. He brought new meaning to the words that the original skipped over. I find this one to be more believable as someone who could actually exist instead of just an evil villain. They changed his character anyway, if you watch the Bells Of Notre Dame, he's less just evil and more a severely pious man.
In retrospect, and after some consideration, I personally think Frollo is without question the best villain in any Disney movie. His motivations are extremely down to Earth, his descent into darkness is exceptionally well paced. There is nothing fictional about his actions, nothing that makes you go "this couldn't have happened". He is depicted to be hated throughout the entire film, but in the end, the very last scene he appears, I feel nothing but pity for him. This is on of the most underrated films of all time, in my humble opinion.
I can truly feel the emotion and the wrestling with his soul. Up until this point, he sincerely thought he was holy and now has to wrestle with human emotion qhen he truly felt he was above sin. He chose wrong. Bravo
Okay, I just have to say it - this is really inspiring, young man! I'm a german writer working on my very first anglophone piece, planned as a novella, and today I came across here totally random after listening to mixed musicals on TH-cam half the day, while I was pondering about a scene of my current chapter. I forgot an idea I had before, it just hides somewhere in my head lol :D. But seeing this performance I thought some emotional elements are really inspiring for my villain! Also random fact: Reverse to Frolo, my character allows every belief since he became lord over his land, for in his childhood his village was wiped out for "wrong belief". I just became aware of this coincidence! :D
The choice of Hellfire being sung along with the Confiteor was nice as the two clashed together where Hellfire is about shifting blame, while as the Confiteor is about accepting fault. Every sentence of the first half was like an objection to Frollo's words.
Why do they all seem to forget Frollo is NOT a priest, but a judge ? Even in the Disney, never is he shown as a cleric !!! (In the Disney, that is. In the book, he is indeed the archdeacon.)
The stage show changes the story for what was originally intended for the movie. Disney didn’t want Frollo to be a priest so it was changed to a judge for the film.
I love this version mainly because it doesn’t try to portray Frollo as a bad guy but as a man driven into insanity by his own sermons and his devotion to the church
This kid did an amazing job but I will say his quick note drops and constant game of catch up was his only flaw, I’m sure with some more practice he could absolutely nail this and he’ll be the best God damn high school theatre actor I’ve ever seen. Great work man!

I personally think he's too collected in his portrayal. Frollo is torn apart by his lust and his own self righteousness. He feels as if he's at the brink of eternal damnation and is trying desperately to justify his falling. I dont feel that here. Good voice though
Agreed.
Agreed! I think he could have started off controlled at the beginning and then becoming more unravelled as the song goes on.
My thoughts exactly
Man, this Frollo shows a LOT of emotion!
so much power in the voice and the acting👏🏻 gives me goosebumps
Imagine playing the gypsy in the play and watching your classmate play this role
"Jesus, John! I am getting a restraining order"
Hard to believe this is a frigging high school, let me repeat for emphasis, a High School performance.
Wow. Just Wow!!! And I’m only 25 seconds in!
Yh
This is my very favorite Disney song. He did it justice. Wow.
Why do they all seem to forget Frollo is NOT a priest, but a judge ? Even in the Disney, never is he shown as a cleric !!!
(In the Disney, that is. In the book, he is indeed the archdeacon.)
Mr. Prankster I believe they did a different version... check up the “bells of notre dame” video of this play. Apparently Quasimodo is his nephew too
The stage show changes the story for what was originally intended for the movie. Disney didn’t want Frollo to be a priest so it was changed to a judge for the film.
@Thomas Munson yeah, some of them did that themselves so it'll be like pouring gas in the fire
Yes I made that joke and I don't regret it
@Thomas Munson which is a joke because exactly that was Victor Hugos goal with the Hunchback...
This videos are amazing! Please upload the rest of the show!!!!
If I were making a live-action stage show about Harry Potter, this guy would be my number one top choice to play Lord Voldemort. He nails it!
I can’t wait for Esmerelda it’s my fav song
Saw the movie 28 years ago, and heard this song for the first time, and it still gives me chills to this day
Damn... I got tears in my cheeks. I just-- somehow I'm haunted by this "hellfire" desire that Frollo has kept within himself. 😭🔥
I love this version mainly because it doesn’t try to portray Frollo as a bad guy but as a man driven into insanity by his own sermons and his devotion to the church
This kid… i half expected FIRE to shoot from the ground due to his skill.
This gave me chills
When I was finally old enough to really understand this song, my brain exploded. I’m still recovering
Just beautiful. Thank you for creating something so great to share with the world. It lightens the apathy 👍🤟
This is one of the greatest songs ever written ngl
Omg he's pretty
This kid did an amazing job but I will say his quick note drops and constant game of catch up was his only flaw, I’m sure with some more practice he could absolutely nail this and he’ll be the best God damn high school theatre actor I’ve ever seen. Great work man!
This is the most beautiful song of the Hunckback.
this is a HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMANCE??? IT'S SO GOOD!!!
this is just a comment to appreciate the lighting designer of this production, they absolutely killed it with this song
Amazing roleplaying ... I'm speechless. Congratulations!!
he’s so good!!!
The harmonies are impeccable!!
That was excellent. The anger, the fear, and the evilness in one combined is portrayed really well.
His voice is magnificent. 😮
Wait this is a school performance? This is amazing
And here i am in 1996 painting plywood black and gluing sea grass I stole from the public beach in attempt to make a nice silhouette for our college production of A Cheever Evening. They have a amazing budget.
Sheer excellence. 😀 GIVE THIS MAN AN AWARD ASAP
I have a feeling that this will either go according to the book or the Disney film its self...
Probably both
Closer to the book, considering Frollo's entire character, that was totally changed to be "less" evil in the Disney version
@@adami6187 less evil in the disney version ?
@@NormanOsborned I meant to say less menacing. In my opinion, being evil from the start is way less scary than seeing the nice guy transform into the devil in front of you.
@@adami6187 Oh okay you're right. I thought you were saying that Disney Frollo is less evil than is book counterpart.
Congratulations to these kids, they did outstanding!
Absolutely loved his voice and acting ❤ he is great!
Wow. Just wow. Imo this is one of the best portrayals of this song that I've heard. His voice gave me chills and truly shows his struggle. Loved it so much! Thank y'all so much for such a wonderful portrayal of this story
Frollo (sings): But she will be mine or...
Esmeralda: No problem. (sings) Love me tender.
The hottest Frollo ever.
Exactly he is too hot to be frollo
@@eliferdem5405 What wrong with Frollo being good looking? Isn't the message of the story that your outward appearance isn't what makes a man or a monster?
@@sgauden02 oh yes, it was just a joke tbh, but i get your point
Better than what disney could ever dream of doing in a live action!
The actor did a fantastic job.
How am I seeing this just now? This is absolutely amazing?! What???
my favorite song from Disney and he has a amazing voice, But I hate how it sounded like he was catching up on notes and finished them to fast but the sound of his voice made it sound like he was more desperate and it was great
Omg his voice is beautiful and acting is good too he has talent, take him!
He has an amazing voice!
...this actually gave me goosebumps. damn good performance
Goosebumps on top on goosebumps 😍
If Disney makes a live action remake of the hunchback of Notre Dame they better not leave this song out
I love this song too much.
Now kids, this is art!
Man I got chills. Amazing
Bro would do a crazy Anakin. I see the potential
This was my exact thought.
2:51 HELLFIRE DARK FIRE NOW GYPSY ITS YOUR TURN
