  • In case you were wondering, yes, the speed mentioned in the title is accurate. Thanks to a frame by frame analysis of the video to calculate the time it took for one of the engines to pass, I have concluded that, with calculations to back me up, this train is traveling at approximately 65.16 mph.

    Nice. A real smooth run and beautiful track, put that all together and you can do 65 easily.

    Your speed IS NOT ACCURATE!!!!!! I am an engineer on NS on that stretch of railroad. The speed limit is 60MPH!!!!! It is 60 on the entire NS system. Your method of figuring speed needs work. There are no engineers on our area or on the system that would even try to speed 5mph over the limit. Not worth loosing a job over.

      @ejdsndnj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NS speed limit is 70, the whole system is 70.

      Nevermind, it's 60mph for all trains on NS.

    Have you been to that location since around 5-4-20? Has rail traffic slowed as a result of coronavirus? I still want to visit.

      We actually went out last Saturday on 5/2. Traffic is down but it hasn't gone off the deep end or anything. The best day for traffic on the PITL is Saturday, and you can still expect 20 or so trains between the mid-morning and dusk. Unfortunately, however, if you want to see the Pennsylvanians, they are not currently running due to the COVID situation.

      @@NickyDsTrains The "Pennsylvanians" is that a private company that shares the line with NS?

    • @NickyDsTrains
      @NickyDsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Pennsylvanians are Amtrak's trains from NY to Pittsburgh, and normally they would run once a day in either direction in the form of trains 42 (04T) and 43 (07T).

    Any other good spots in that general area for railfanning?

    • @NickyDsTrains
      @NickyDsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there are quite a few less-talked about spots along the the PITL east of Lewistown worth visiting. There's Lucknow Road (PT 109) at the end of Harrisburg yard if you're into slower traffic; there's Cove, PA, (PT 116), which is between Marysville and Duncannon; all four crossings on the straightaway in Aqueduct are viable spots (Linton Hill Rd. at PT 122.5, Potters Ln. at PT 123.3, Bretz Ln. at PT 123.8, and Short Rd. at PT 124.3); if you continue up Aqueduct/Lower Bailey Rd., there's also a pulloff fight around PT 125.8. Continuing west towards Newport, there's the crossings around PT 128 and 129 (I recommend Leshville Rd., PT 128.8), then in Newport, there's a parking lot where you can get a farther-away shot, near where the signals used to be at PT 131. West of Newport, there's a spot near the end of Old Ferry Rd. (PT 135.2) that we just discovered last week, then there's the pulloff at Millerstown (PT 137.5). Continuing west, there's three spots around Thompsontown (between PT 142 and 145) worth checking out, as well as the crossing in Mexico (PT 148.7). Approaching Lewistown, there's also Port Royal (PT 151), the signals at Mifflin (PT 153.3), and lastly, the station at Lewistown (PT 165 I believe). Depending on when you're visiting, I might be able to get a video up with shots from each of these spots.

      Oh, and I forgot to mention Harris Tower, at PT 105, which is open inside sometimes.

    How many trains pass that area each day? Your estimate. I'd like to go there and video some trains. But it has to be worth it. I'd be coming from Jersey.

    • @NickyDsTrains
      @NickyDsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traffic seems to be down a little, recently (That might just feel that way due to my own time constraints) but if you got there at, say, 9 AM, and stayed till dark, you could probably still see 20-25 trains or so. I would guess that 40-50 pass through in a 24-hour period.

      @@NickyDsTrains excellent. Thank you. Ive been railfanning in Jersey up by Phillipsburg/Easton area. Rail traffic is light. Maybe 15 in 24 hrs. Maybe 8 or so in daylight hours. Thanks again.

      @@NickyDsTrains I went to HSC in Altoona and stayed in Cresson overnight for my very first railfanning experience. I was told by the folks at the Station Inn that 65-70 trains roll thru Cresson in a 24hr period. I believe them. I saw about 20 or so trains during daylight hrs. That was back in September 2019. I'm going back. It was a blast.
