As a railroader who used to work this sub… this train was going probably 68-70 mph maybe a bit more if the speedometer was off. This is just one of the few towns where there are no slow curves or permanent speed restrictions, so the maximum speed is 70 for freight. Even if you cut the overspeed out, bad things would start happening if you made freight locomotives go 80 mph, like stuff would start coming unwound. The overspeed will put you in penalty braking around 73 mph. Amtrak engines are designed to go 90 mph, and Amtrak does go 90 through here, if I recall.
Believe it or not I know of several employees that have actually cut out the overspeed out of the 3 that did only one was fired, he happened to be working out of Arizona!
@@stephenheath8465 they ran 90. But none of the locomotives on the roster today are geared above 75. And that’s only a few of the GE’s. Track speeds are enforced now by PTC. There is no more speeding
I remember playing train simulator and I was driving a BNSF hotshot intermodal and I was flying at 75 mph and it did just that. I heard beeping and then I saw my speed dropping.
@@Blue_Ghost-X BNSF has a lot of trackage rated for 70 mph intermodal such as here. With the size of trains lately you won’t see 70 as much, but they are capable of it by rule. As for the MP36, they have never built a single unit rate above 110 mph. The ones used on NMRX is the MP36PH- 3C. They’re only rated for 102 mph because of the gearing and overspeed protected. You done a great job of actually catching the speed of this train. Most folks will pan along with it, and it just doesn't convey that speed. This video shows just how fast they go.
My favourite crossing in Northern AZ for speed - but not for the faint of heart as those locos can be quite fearsome at those speeds.. On SE side of crossing, there is a walkway into the depot behind a high railing. Basically across the street from where this young gent is standing - you can see it at the end of the vid.
You get some real east-west screamers around Holbrook. In New Mexico I've seen some north-south freights that would take your breath away heading south from Vaughn.
I can only imagine what it would have been like for a country kid in the 1930’s to watch a high speed Southwest Chief come flying by and the steam a rollin’! Back then the world didn’t come to you through a computer or phone.
It takes 22 frames for the first engine to pass the signal, and the engine is 74.5 ft long, so: (1/30)*22 = 0.73 seconds 74.5/0.73 = 101.6 ft per second 101.6*60*60/5280 = 69.2 mph I was going to complain about filming the most horizontal thing yet invented in portrait mode, but I think it helps emphasize the speed so nvm
Watching the video you can do a little calculation. The locomotive is approximately 22.30 meters long, the transition from the nose to the tail of the lead locomotive, taking the pole as a reference, takes approximately 0.8 seconds, so the train is traveling at approximately 63-64 miles per hour
