What KNOCK AT THE CABIN Is Really About

  • Knock at the Cabin asks an impossible question: Would you sacrifice someone you love to save the world?
But surprisingly, the movie becomes less about this question and more about belief. Is the choice real? In this video, I consider what the movie says about these questions and compare it to Paul Tremblay’s book which this movie is adapted from. M. Night Shyamalan made some significant changes which alter the story’s meaning.

The four can actually represent other forms of the horsemen: redmond is war due to his angry nature, adrianne represents famine due to being a cook, sabrina is pestilence since she's a nurse and Leonard is death due to him making sure the others r dead, he has a pale shirt and he's the last one to die like how death is meant to be the last horseman to appear before hell comes a calling.

M.Night Shyamalan's little cameo when he inserted himself in the TV advert for the chicken deep fryer was spot on. In each one of his movies, he makes a small appearance. So he's a writer, director and an actor.

Shyamalan kind of removes the hope for me, now they live the rest of their lives knowing that a God that demands the sacrifice of people you love and has the willingness to eliminate every human being for simply not killing someone you love is real. Where is the hope in that world? They mention that this has happened before to other families, this will almost certainly happen again, and again.

It's abundantly clear in the film the dichotomy of the superior morality of all the characters acting under duress, compared to the maliciously capricious supernatural orchestrator of events.
It was a forced and false responsibility foisted upon them that wasn't actually theirs. The agency behind events can only be construed as evil.

    • @krishadyn5211
      @krishadyn5211 ปีที่แล้ว

Even worse, its an evil agency that forces people to hurt other people, rather than take what it wants, or go directly to the people it wants dead. And the unspoken? This won't be the last time. Its just until the next time.
I have never believed the common explanation for the story of Abraham and Isaac. Believers focus on explaining the sacredness of the submission to murdering your child and various. Old Testament Yaweh was a bloodthirsty god, after all. But I see it differently. In a time period where human sacrifice was accepted, even expected, where we are told children are being sacrificed in the valley of Moloch, a god who tells his worshippers to NOT sacrifice a human is the outlier. I believe this parable was meant to combat human sacrifice. It cleverly does not demonize the sacrificer, like presumably important priests who might dislike that, but it introduces an alternative, even allowing the worshippers to feel morally superior to all the primitives still practicing human sacrifice. It highlights this god to be different than others. In the original context, it might have acted like advertisement to draw people to prefer this alternative.

Tremblay's novel ending decided to ground itself in reality. No supernatural beings here. The movie delves the audience deep into magical thinking. Anything is possible. It's the difference between Nolan's Dark Knight and Snyder's Man of Steel. If you recall, a whole lot more people died in Snyder's Metropolis than in Nolan's Gotham. The novel's ending was far more merciful to humanity as the movie's ending puts us in reality where humans are so tiny and helpless against these omnipotent supernatural powers.

there's a reason the anger issues of andrew were given a side story, and even more so when there was a connection between him and redmond. both premises were not really helpful for the plot of the movie if you think about it - andrew's hate towards others was unnecesasry to push a conflict between him and eric in making the choice; it's a natural occurrence that two persons would tend to disagree on a choice to make sure they are making the right decision. yet somehow these premises were given an ample amount of focus. and i would love to know why. it might help answer the question of whether there was really an impending apocalypse

No human would be in their right mind after going through the ordeal from the movie: getting invaded, human sacrifices, talks of world ending, emotional flashback to abuse, and above all “sacrificing” their loved one. The amount of trauma, “should’ve” moments, resentment and guilt btw wen & Andrew (bc where’s that dialogue of “sorry hun you’re one daddy short”), and the loneliness of you have literally no one to tell this to.. he might as well be in living hell

I had a strange theory the film was about The Trinity (understood as the Triune God of Christianity) and how it self sacrificed in order to save even those whose hated love itself. I might be crazy, but there is some dialogue in the film to support this towards the end when Andrew is telling Eric people don’t deserve anything because they destroy everything, to me it sounds like an inner monologue that God would have in eternity when God decided to intervene by sacrificing one of himself , the son, the second member of The Trinity. The sacrifice had a real cost that altered the course of destiny and history for all eternity. Many interpretations possible! Loved this movie, works in so many levels.

Also, haven't people already started dying so then it doesn't matter if anyone sacrifices themselves.
I think there is another explanation that most of us don't know, maybe psychological, that these are attacking emotions, but who is having them...?
    Was someone else's mind "split"...?
But I think only a certain eye sees the real message here, whether this was the intended interpretation of the book or Hollywood micromanaging.

The social engineers in Hollyweird enlisted M Night Shyamalan this time to direct a thrilling cinematic celebration of gay marriage.
In this story, two queer men show the hetero normative class once and for all that they are as good as them, maybe even better.
And what is the surprise twist ending to the film that Shyamalan is known for?
Perhaps it's that those who cannot reproduce in order to perpetuate the species will at least rescue it for those who can with an act of super moral bravery and courageous self sacrifice.

When you start seeing the parallels of the Bible stories with the sumerian, Canaan, Persian, Babylonian, Greek, Roman myths of my, we don't have any idea how God the true one is.
And we have each time a disaster happens religious people saying is doomsday and that the prophecies and so on. And this world should be called mythology world, cause this happened in ancient times, each phenomenon or disaster explained creating gods. Here an ex-pentecostal and Hebrew roots talking. Some people show up at my place, they are getting shot real fast and that would be the end of the movie. There’s two guys in this and one looks like he was some sort of fighter. Uh, you take the people out with no hesitation. This must be California. This wouldn’t fly in Texas or Florida.

    M. Night Shyamalan is my favorite movie director and producer, I absolutely adore him and will watch anything this man makes. All 100% of his movies and series are in my favorites list. So it pains me to say that the execution of this movie wasn't strong enough and this definitely is not his best work. I was very excited to watch this movie, but was a little disappointed, wasn't convinced with the plot, the ending was ambiguous and I was left with so many questions. And it has nothing to do with expecting a crazy twist in the end or anything. I love Split and Unbreakable which have almost no twists, but rather a different perspectives on the familiar stories, so it's not about the thrill or expectations. I just feel the story could have been exploited better. For example - whatever the 4 horseman represent - they are still humans, they were not some divine beings sent from above. So, let's say a person start seeing all this crazy visions - wouldn't psychiatrist be the first choice? Or at least therapist? Wouldn't they be put on medication instead of searching on internet for someone with similar visions? I understand they saw each other in the visions too, but how did they know they are real? Maybe other people were also hallucinations? Ok, now, let's say they found each other and convinced each other of the visions - why would they willingly sacrifice themselves? It's not like they served in the church their entire lives and learning about divine and biblical stories and God etc.. it's not like they were preparing they entire lives to sacrifice themselves. How can they just go and do it? Leave their kids behind? Can you imagine yourself in that position? Wouldn't you rather convince yourself that you are crazy and take a pill? Also, if they came in peace, why were they carrying weapons? They could have leave it outside and come inside to talk first. If Eric was all love and no anger - why wouldn't he stay instead of Andrew? Wouldn't it be better for the girl? Also, how are they going to leave knowing that if all this was true, their slow decisions have killed millions of people? Andrew was traumatized for years because of the fight in the bar, so what happens now then? Will he go straight to the mental hospital? And what is the movie actually about? Faith? Or punishment? Or sacrifice? Or family? Or love? Or rapture? Or belief system? I don't know...

I think part of the issue is that Shyamalan's sensibilities don't match with Paul Tremblay's story. But, he ends up leaving most of the story in tact, only changing the ending which gives the movie a bit of thematic identity crisis (like so many of the issues/questions you mention here).

I mean if there is a clear message, if it's just simple and not a twist, it cannot be both, if just a narrative,
Then this movie is saying that these people or people, who may have crazy ideas, should follow their plans through, because in the end, everyone feels good about everything they did, whether their actions mattered, or not.
So I guess, spread your craziness and it doesn't matter, if you kill yourself, because others won't, then it is their fault.
This just seems like a lazy director thinking he's creative and ignorantly being an, a h, and an author confused by his own beliefs about even his completed work.
Really, what a feeling of nihilism.
Maybe it is the author's journey, to just being able to stop trying to figure out the world, and being able to say f it, because whether it makes a difference, it ends up driving you crazy.
I guess I think maybe this is, whether the author knows it or not, the story of the psychological assault on his mind.
    I would easily understand this.😊

This movie is very dangerous, especially for homosexuals. The film leaves no doubt that homoparental families are dangerous for society and represent its decline and end. In turn and subliminally, he says that being homosexual is unhealthy and deviant. There are several scenes in the film that say this in a very hidden way. The entire succession of events and speeches in the film is completely against homosexual couples and the adoption of children. The latter being the main objective of the film to criticize. A well-made film, pleasing to the most conservative point of view and for the most inattentive, it is an inclusive film. Inclusive because it gave work to two homosexual actors but ultimately it was done to humiliate and do little for the inclusion and respect for the dignity of homosexual people and their family constitutions. This movie don´t have any plot twist because the only plot twist is the entire movie. The plot twist is that this movie is homophobic and anti gay, without being so obvious. But what remains in the viewer's subconscious? What remains is that these types of families must be frowned upon, persecuted and that they are an attack on the safety, well-being and progression of society as a whole. They therefore represent a danger that must be eliminated. But in the film they were intelligent. The rule was: only one of the couple could die and it had to die by the choice of one of the couple. None of the heterosexuals in the film physically killed the couple. The death here was symbolic and it was as if they had been killed or made to kill them. If there was a film about homosexuals doing things like this to heterosexuals, the film would immediately be despised and seen as made by mentally ill people who are an attack on morality, against God and against the normality of society. This Shyamalan film is simply a parody of the rights and achievements of homosexuals and is represented as being the sign of the end of times. This shit is revolutionary for the conservative people. Well done!

Hey I hate to bash you a bit here but I actually think you may have missed the movie versions idea or premise. Ironically, I think it’s because your so sure your right, which is what this whole (movie version) story tips on. You gave examples of what you call facts at 2:25. “Is the climate warming too fast?” Both sides of that argument could give “facts” to prove they are the correct side, but obviously from the pic you inserted, you have already decided which you believe to call “facts”. I’m fairly certain you would elude to the other side as lies or misinformation. “Is COVID killing us”? Well COVID killed some for sure, but clearly most people who caught COVID survived, so is that statement fact or not? You could of qualify it and make it closer to true, like adding “…some of us”, but you don’t, I think because of your arrogance of thinking you know and your right. You said the 4 strangers feel like they do not have a choice. The leader Len clearly admits in a conversation on that exact topic in the movie that he made a choice to be there. It’s a story for the audience to think about what they believe and what would it take for you to change what you believe when the stakes are so high, among other things. Yet you seem to think you know exactly what the answers are. You literally could be a character in this movie. Kind of ironic don’t you think?
