  • After EVIL DEAD RISE, I had to revisit the original trilogy helmed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell! This video breaks down what makes these movies special and what they mean to me. Give it a watch, then share your experience with these movies in the comments!

The keyword for the Evil Dead franchise is sadism, deadites are brutal, violent, and enjoy doing it. They mock their victims. To me that's exactly what a real demon would do.

And an utter lack of self preservation or foresight: These aren't people, they aren't depth and they don't have a plan. They act because they act because they act and doing so... tearing down and killing and defiling... is its own reward even if they know they are about to get their heads blown off. If the damned gave a damn it would make them less unnerving, like they were still playing by the same rules I am, even if it would objectively make them more threatening.

The beauty of this is that eventually, the protagonists of each Evil Dead entry only survives by becoming as sadistic and monstrous themselves, giving the deadites the same treatment they gave the survivors and victims the entire movie

I was sorta forced into being an Evil Dead fan since I was a kid, Evil Dead 2 was my dad's favorite movie. Back around 2001, he bought a house with his then-wife and got divorced a year later. After the divorce, we decided to turn his basement into a replica of the cabin from the second movie. It was a lot of fun! We got a desk and one of those retro green lamps, we took a textbook and glued it shut, and used clay to recreate the front of the Necronomicon on it. We got a similar rocking chair and bookshelf, a deer head for the wall, we even put a board on the ground with a chain just like where Henrietta was locked up. A bunch of other stuff, too, like a wax eyeball hanging from the ceiling that looked like it was flying through the air.
As a kid I always liked Army of Darkness more because it was funnier, but now that I'm 35 I've grown to really like Evil Dead 2 the best just because of how absurd it is. Unfortunately, my dad never got to see Ash Vs. Evil Dead's existence, but I'm sure he would have been super excited. I thought the show was decent, although some of the gore and stuff felt a little too over the top, even for Evil Dead standards. I really wish I had pictures of the basement we did, but I was a dumb kid who didn't care about preserving memories lol. Anyway, good video and basically a perfect analysis of what makes the movies work. Great job!

The joke that gets me everytime is in Army of Darkness. When Ash is burying Evil Ash he says to him "You have something on your face?" While Evil Ash is looking around his face, Ash shovels a load of dirt in his face.

My favorite is “your shoelace is untied” as Arthur looks down at a solid metal knight’s boot.

Awesome People/Movie to cover! This and The Exorcist are still the only 2 movies that still scare me to this day!

Deadites are the best zombies in cinema.
Their resilience and supeenatural abilities coupled with sadistic intelligence and disregard for the human form give them so much terrifying potential.
Ash is a cool character and is great but he is the worst part of the franchise because he constantly ruins any tension that a movie can have.
This is why Rise and 2013 are my favorites of the franchise, the first is the best of the original 3 for me and a big part of why Ash Versus the Evil Dead didn't appeal to me.

*The **_HORROR_** of having no story to tell* .
Explored in all it's grotesque consequences - the dead mean no harm, they can't suffer themselves, they just want _to... play_ .

Isn’t it just about a bunch of random horror setpieces that Sam Raimi liked?

I'll watch 1 and 2 back-to-back. But 3 like said here was not scary and in some ways a disappointment to me because of the comedy was over whelming in the story, I'll watch it separate from the other two.

Great video as usual! But just like the Alien video, you forgot the part about what is really about!!! Raimi's Drag me to hell is about eating disorders, just like Evil Dead is about drug abuse. The 2013 remake turned the subtext into a main theme with the main character getting detox in the cabin, but the original was a bout a group of friends going to do drugs in a cabin, and one of them having such a bad trip, he thinks his friends are possesed by demons. Even worst, he kills them and then has to tell himself a different story when he goes insane, maybe he killed just his girlfriend, but ends up killing also a couple of doctors and nurses in the mental institution while thinking he's still in the cabin (Evil Dead 2). Finally, in his dying breath, he escapes into an arthurian fantasy where he's the hero. A true horrible tragedy masked by a funny and scary set of films...

I always see the franchise about facing your fears then you realize how they weren't really scary in the first place as Ash is scared and useless in the first movies and slowly becomes more brave until in Army of Darkness the deadites are just a joke now and not as scary as he thought in the original.

      @brantcloyd5485 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Exactly theres 2 ways to look at the franchise:
      1. Deadites Perspective: Sadism, Gory, Goofy and an original look at horror. Sam Raimi's take imo.
      2. Ash's Perspective: Overcoming Odds and becoming a hero that can laugh at things that used to terrify you.
