    This trilogy is my all-time favorite movie trilogy.
    I LOVE Batman Begins.
    Fun fact (in my opinion): The bit in the plane between Bruce and Alfred about Bruce being "brought back from the dead" after being "declared dead" for 7 years is a meta reference to the last Batman movie that was theatrically released, as well as the one that "killed" the Batman franchise in Batman and Robin. Really hilarious if you think about it.
    To me, Christian Bale is my all-time favorite Bruce Wayne/Batman interpretation.

    The problem with this film is that Nolan kind of changed his mind with the vision he wanted after this film. He wanted to make a hyper realistic/blade runner inspired Batman. However, by the dark knight, he had decided to dip into the “ultra realistic” side more so than the “blade runner inspired” side. So “Batman Begins” feels weirdly different within the trilogy.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I strongly suspect that the dystopian fantasy Gotham of the first film was less Nolan's idea than the studio's expectation, much like the Batmobile and the painfully impractical rubber suit from the earlier films. Like most middle chapters in trilogies, I think The Dark Knight shows the director at his most creatively free. He was allowed to abandon more of the old Burton baggage, like the comic-book style Gotham, Batman's immobilizing cowl, and the over-the-top villain, and really see if he could put this comic book superhero in what could pass for the real world. Of course, by the third film, over-the-top villains were back.

    I understand your opinion bro, but for a lot of the "issues" you have with this movie don't bother me at all, and I feel that even though this is a more grounded, realistic version of Batman not only does it limit some things Christopher Nolan could do but it opened up more opportunities with this movie. But what you must remember is that this movie is surrounded on the concept of "Fear", like all these films, TDK "Chaos", TDKR "Pain", and this film really does well with the aspect of fear. But I respect your opinion and agree with some of your opinions. Awesome Video.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this issue speaks to Nolan's unique approach to film. His stories always track technically, but I often don't feel particularly connected to the characters, and the Dark Knight trilogy is no exception. When Rachel dies in the second film, I understand why Bruce and Harvey are destroyed by it, but I don't feel it myself. It doesn't resonate for me. It's the same with his other films, like inception and The Prestige. I am witness to the magicians' obsession, or Dom Cobb's grief over his wife, but I don't feel it with the characters.
      That changed, I think, with Interstellar. It may not be as good or clever a movie as the others, but it lets you sit with the main characters and feel their emotions deeply. Dunkirk did that as well, using very little dialog, but just letting you experience the events along with the characters. Instead of explaining, it just lets you in. Tenet was back to the old routine of swiss-watch concepts; impossibly complex and brilliant, but quite cold and mechanical.

    I feel the same way about these movies the same you feel about those early batman movies Chris. These movies were my introduction to the batman character and his rogues gallery. I remember owning a DVD copy of the dark knight when I was like 7 or 8 years old because I loved it so much. Now at the age of 15 (16 in may) I find myself appreciating them more and more everything I rewatch them. Even though I love the early batman movies(minus Batman and Robin) these hold a special place in my heart that I'll never forget. Can't wait for The Batman on Friday!!!!!

    The DarkNight trilogy is my favorite Batman movies. The villains where done right, but I do would had want for Batman to kill in this movie. One of the reasons I like this trilogy is cause the movie felt real, like it was happening in the real world. It just felt realistic. I actually wish they had continued this universe. I hope that in the next Batman movie does as good as this trilogy.

    I have watched Batman begins probably about 4 or 5 times and I love it. It's a very good inspirational movie. The Nolan trilogy was great but one big problem that I hated was how some of the villains went out for instance Bane getting blasted by Catwoman and scarecrow getting tasered while on his horse and riding off,I mean here comes the scarecrow with his damn horse breathing fire and I thought it was about to go down but then he gets tasered and goes out like a chump. I saw it in theatres and I was legitimately shocked by the twist of who ras Al ghul was and that was pretty great. Still foolish how he expected Bruce to just turn on Gotham like that 😆. I still think it was a really good movie with a great cast. Carmine Falcone was played brilliantly by his actor and was a surprisingly good villain.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree. Like many little touches in Batman Begins (nice coat) Scarecrow's end was a little too glib, too cheap. It reduced the character's power and importance to basically nothing.
      But I think the problem you point out with Ra's Al Ghul was far worse. You zeroed in on the key problem, he expected Bruce to turn on Gotham without actually making a case. If Bruce had actually bought into Ra's Al Ghul's philosophy, at least in theory, then at the crucial moment, he might remember Rachel's line "your father would be ashamed of you," and find himself unable to go through with it. Instead, he isn't even tempted. He's had a change of heart since wanting to kill Joe Chill, but we don't actually witness that change. And because we don't see Bruce transform from a would-be murderer to someone who refuses to kill, Ra's Al Ghul's intention for him in Gotham him seems like a plotline that was dead before it began.
      Wouldn't it have been something to see Ra's convert Bruce, radicalize him into something akin to a suicide bomber. He's almost ready to help the League of Shadows punish all of Gotham for what it did to his parents, only to find, deep within all that hatred, the last part of his parents that are still alive, the hope of saving the city. That plotline exists within the ideas of Batman Begins' script, but it just doesn't emerge.

    Christian Bale for me is the best Batman, but only in Batman Begins for me, his “Batvoice” changes between movies and in the dark knight and rises I find it to be be way more silly and too much. In Begins though it’s more subtle, smooth and calm.
    Surprisingly out of all the ones we’ve gotten, Val Kilmer is my favourite Batman, I really don’t like what Batman Forever ended up being, but his Batman and Bruce Wayne is the best we’ve ever gotten in live action for me in terms of his performance. I wish he got a good Batman movie so people would appreciate his version a lot more, because it’s one that gets lost in the mix and isn’t talked about enough.
    Im realising so far we’ve gotten very lucky with Batman movie casting, there isn’t a single Batman we’ve had that I think the casting is off, not just pertaining to Batman either all his villains so far have been cast perfectly for the time they were made, I can’t wait to see where the Pattinson cast ranks among the predecessors.
    Love the reviews Chris glad to see the channels really taking off too!

    Personally, this is my favourite Batman movie to date. I definitely do agree with you that the fighting wasn't great in this movie, let alone the entire trilogy but Nolan's take on the character and the combination of humanity and realism is something that hadn't been done with superhero movie until Batman Begins and inspired a bunch of other film makers including Jon Favreau when he was directing Iron Man and Marc Webb when he was directing TASM 1.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fighting was definitely a low point for the entire trilogy, though it slowly improved with each film. But it seemed clear that Nolan didn't love that particular kind of movie spectacle. It feels perfunctory and uninspired, like a necessary chore the film had to go through to get to what Nolan felt was important, the human qualities.
      Though one could argue that these films illustrate how much less important fight spectacle is in even an action film than rich story, coherent themes, and real drama. A brilliant story with bad fight scenes can still be regarded as a great film. But a clumsy, incoherent story with brilliant fight scenes, not so much.

    While I did enjoy the Nolan-trilogy (at least the first two), I cant say I love them. They just don't feel like proper Batman-movies. Yes, you have Batman/Bruce and other characters. But the charm of Batmans universe is gone to me. Gotham is just New York, the Tumbler, while it has been growing on me recently, doesnt feel like a Batmobile, and the more fantastical elements are gone. I guess the whole "Batman in our world" just isnt interesting enough for me. Its like taking a colorful painting (ironically) and painting over it with grey and white.

Sounds like he likes the movie but has complaints about pretty much ALL of it. And that’s not even the most foolish thing about this review. It’s the comparisons to previous movies and the simple fact that these movies are just better in EVERY single way imaginable. The worst of these(TDKR) is still absolute miles better than anything before or after them. If you’re a Batman fan and a film fan I don’t see how you could think otherwise. This movie is beautiful, deliberate, emotional, just the right amount of dark for this iteration, and the pacing makes it the best comic origin story in film history.
