    Here's a crazy story that happened not too long ago:
    About 3 years ago I've upgraded from my old 3310 to an Android smartphone because I needed extra functions for work that I couldn't get on the Nokia and I didn't want to carry 5 different devices all the time. So, I got an Android and sold my Nokia. I was very happy with my Android and still am, but I missed my Nokia that went through so much with me over the decade I owned it. So, I decided to go on Amazon and buy another one because when going abroad or on holiday I didn't want to bring a phone I use for work just in case I broke it, I lost it or it got stolen. So last week I've ordered a used 3310 and it came in a couple days later. It was all fine, I took out the battery to put a new SIM in so its ready to go, and I noticed something strange. When I bought my Nokia 13 years ago, I wrote my name and a spare number in permanent ink underneath the battery slot on the phone, in case I lost it. When I took the battery out, I noticed my name and my old number written on the phone! I bought my old Nokia by accident!
    So I've got it again, and I'll never sell it. I love it to bits.

      +DJ Shuffle That's incredible. The odds of rebuying the exact same phone you sold 3 years ago are astronomical. Even if it was sold locally the odds of that happening are really long. It's like that old saying if you love something set it free and if it comes back to you it was meant to be.

    By the end of the video I felt quite emotional with the way such a great company went down... We the 90's kids all had them as our first mobile phone... And we will never forget the joy of holding them for the first time, and owning a mobile phone. 👏🏼

    The app store is the main reason why Nokia and Blackberry fell. It allowed a phone, for the first time, to become extensible. The same reason why the Windows phone failed to compete in the market.

      yes install dozens of those shitty apps on your android phone and it will lag like a hell even with an sd820 and 4 gigs of ram. Android is a piece of crap

      +Denis Sabljarić I use a Windows Phone myself and I love it to bits, have been doing so since Windows Mobile 6.1 on my HTC Touch HD all the way up to Win10 Mobile on my Lumia 830. I still love the clean and minimalistic aesthetic the OS has, plus the live tiles are a feature that I think really integrates notifications very well in a well-design UI ^^
      However we cannot deny the fact that it has issues, the app gap being one of them. Lag on Android only exists in the more budget orientated devices. Even the Chinese flagship phones with heavy skins such as the Huawei P9 and Mate 9 are able to run perfectly fine, the same goes with the stock-Android-equipped Nexus and Pixel line-up, the near stock HTC 10, the feature packed powerhouse of a phone we know as the LG V20, and hundreds of not thousands more.
      Even if it does lag, saying that apps are the issue is just avoiding the problem of not being able to attract developers onto the platform. If it really does lag Android phones, why doesn't Microsoft make a phone that has apps AND doesn't slow down? That would've been a perfect opportunity to take over the smartphone industry. If Apple can have a lot of new apps and still run faster than anyone else on their A10 chip, then I'm sure the combined forces of Microsoft and Nokia can conjure something up that'll shake up the industry.
      The fact is my Lumia 830 has never gotten an update where at least one thing isn't broken. The fact is the 3GB RAM, Snapdragon 810 equipped Lumia 950 XL crashes when running Continuum, as I've experienced first hand when promoting the phone to my father, as well as from other people's experience with owning the device. Sure, there are people who are alright with the device, but that doesn't make the complaints of disappointed owners any less valid.The fact is Microsoft focuses more on their Windows 10 PC operating system than their smartphones counterparts.
      I really want Windows 10 Mobile to succeed because it genuinely has good features, but it becomes harder to wish for that everyday when more manufacturers jump on Android and release stellar hardware with every subsequent device and Microsoft is left with only a select number of OEMs. It becomes harder to hope for an OS that gets buggier with each update when both Android and iOS are getting a lot better at making sure their phones can run really well.
      Plus, it's not just apps, but support from various other things as well. Phone case makers, service centers, custom programs for operating systems, carrier-tied deals, people have a tendency to go for iOS and Android instead of Windows simply because that's where all the money is, and I don't blame them. You take advantage of the more popular market, there's a higher chance of getting money there instead of investing in a userbase that makes only around 1% of the world's smartphone users.
      What I'm saying is, you can use and appreciate Windows, but we cannot deny that the OS right now is facing issues. Even Nokia right now under HMD Global (which is made up Nokia's older, more experienced workforce that Microsoft sacked for some reason) is running the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, and as a result it's become a huge success in China. Just one flash sale alone and they've got over a million bookings for the device and they've had to restock their inventory as they had run out of devices to give out to buyers.
      Say what you will about Android and iOS, but they're more popular than Windows Phone and their OS (plus the devices they're on) are getting better constantly. If Windows Phone wants to get even with them, then Microsoft needs to address a number of issues with the OS, rather than just be in denial and having the fanbase attack non-Windows users. Like I said, I love my Lumia, and I'm keeping it for bug testing, because there are problems with it and someone needs to tell Microsoft that rather than just treat it as if there's no troubles whatsoever. Progress can only come when you admit your mistakes and build on it.
      Anyways, sorry for the long essay of sorts. If I sound angry or offensive, then my apologies ^^" I didn't mean to sound that way, I just want to let you know that I'm doing what I can for Windows 10, and the only way I can do that is by accepting the faults we have and building on them

      my lumia 520 was slowed down after a year and a half, just like my flagship lg g3. The only problem is that g3 was 3x more expensive than this lumia. And i don't need too much apps. Yes android can be good for a year or two with flagship devices, but they cost almost like a year or two old iphone models (6, 6s) and ios is much better. I will see now, this year i will buy some device probably redmi 4 and if it also lags after dozens of android devices i had - well than its done. If the win phone is dead next year i will go for an iphone , no matter the price, my head is full of this crappy android.
      On my g3 marshmallow worked like shit compared with lolipop. It needs at least 1,8 GB of RAM ??!!
      Android expensive devices slow down in a year or two just like win phone, but most of the windows phone devices (650, 640, 640xl, 550, 535, 532...) are 3-4 x cheaper than some huawei honor 8 or one plus 3

      i think i will get now some windows phone like lumia 550 and than see this years what happens with win mobile 10. If its still alive at the end of the year i will buy surface phone. Otherwise - iphone. No more android, flagships are too expensive and far behind iphone, midrangers and entry level are crap

      No they wouldn't. Making Android phones is about speed of innovation and low cost of manufacture, not Nokia's strong points. Nokia would only have survived if they had beaten Android to market with a viable alternative OS and App Store to compete with Apple. Nokia can't work with other peoples OS.

    • @sn4tx
      @sn4tx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      True. I was never a fan of android (still not) and I was A die hard Nokia fan until I couldn’t take it anymore. Even if android wasn’t as great around that time as it is now, it was a way better experience than I had on my last Nokia. And it was light years behind iOS user experience. Solely as UI experience. I still own my last 2 Nokia phones, the Nokia N8 and the Nokia N900. Symbian and Maemo5.
      And the experience was sooo much better on Maemo 5!! First error was not going for that one. If they had launched the Maemo way sooner on most Nokia phones when they still had big share of the market, it would bring attention from app developers which equals to comercial success. Plus one thing mAemo did really good was full webpages. It came with 32gb internal + external storage and some very decent stereo speakers.
      Nokia N8 was a beast of a phone when it comes to versatility! HDMI out with 5.1 support, you could plug a keyboard, an usb pen, external disk, etc etc. plus it could be charged over mini usb (micro? Not sure now) or via that proprietary Nokia thin charger everyone had at the time. And it had some AR apps that were pretty cool. And to control it remotely you could use PS3 and Nintendo WII controllers.
      But that Symbian experience... huh it was terrible. It made me so frustrated many times. Typing experience was terrible with a full QWERTY keyboard. It was a lot better with T9, and that’s why Symbian^3, Anna and all versions of Symbian were never more than just the old Symbian adapted to a touch screen. And of course that would never work as good as the 2 other OS made from the group up to a touch interface. If they only had gone for the Maemo5 and later it’s evolution Meego way sooner. (check on TH-cam a Nokia n9 review and see how awesome meego was and it could be over time).
      Possibly, there’s a chance, Android wouldn’t catch on as it did. And possibly, there is a slight chance, today we wouldnt even know about android. I know today this is too crazy to consider and think about, but ya know it’s just like we learn from these videos. One bad or good decision can affect the whole future.
      And yes, being that they had this issue with the 2 software divisions, and said no to android when it was obviously a success already, it was the final nail. Microsoft or no Microsoft that’s just history that wouldn’t and didn’t change the outcome.

    First of all let me congratulate you for this series. I thing they're your best so far and the subject is indeed very interesting for most phone lovers.
    Now, as for Nokia, it's the classical story of an empire rising and falling because of their own decisions and internal power struggles.
    Arrogance and meaningless inside politics also took down the Roman empire.
    As you build an empire and become the standard of excellence for so long you often see organizations slow down. They don't innovate anymore as they already are so powerful and rich that they feel like they can literally own the entire world.
    It's true. They can do it. Well, until something special come along.
    The first problem of Nokia was the failure in accepting that the Iphone and his concept had change the world of mobile phones just like that. It took one presentation to end Nokia's reign.
    Everyone new that. Nokia knew it because the consumers knew it immediately. Who cares about 3g and what the Iphone couldn't do. The revolutionary concept gave people everything. A phone, a music player, an internet device, a GPS, a picture display and endless apps.
    At that point Nokia's arrogance was the nail in the coffin. They tried to keep their stupid OS that looked primitive to everyone. They had one chance: JUMP TO ANDROID. As they failed to accept reality and the old internal politic questions never were to be solved, it was just a matter of time until the sale of the company.
    Nokia could have been saved at any moment. It didn't need to be sold if they had accepted Android. What's the point to use Microsoft OS when everyone knew that it had a liability very similar to Nokia's OS: The useless App store.
    To me it's clear that when they decided to use Microsoft as the OS for Nokia devices, it was already set in stone that the end was near for Nokia as a brand.
    Resuming, it all comes down to old fat people failing to realize an abrupt change and disrespecting customers by thinking these would never leave them... Even when something huge had just happened.
    And even after having had the chance to humble themselves and jump to android, they chose to fight internally for no reason. Then, they sold themselves to Microsoft.
    A story very common to companies across the world.
    Morale of the story? Never sleep on passed glories and always be humble enough to accept and recognize they need to change!

      Amen brother amen i 100 agree with all you said!! I remember having the nokia n8 and and every body was on blackberry ping. I felt left out than iphone came with the whatsapp. I felt left out again. Because Nokia did not have it yet a full year had oassed before whatsapp had come to Nokia users. By that time i was fed up with nokia and allways finishing last. So when the samsung note came i jumped ship. I got tired of allways complaining at nokia. If a company is not giving you what you want, leave them alone! And thats what i did and i think alot of people did the same.

    • @karthiknaik3944
      @karthiknaik3944 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      i dont agree that android could have saved Nokia
      Windows Phone was actually more advanced but poor apps selection and software was locked down which brought down Wp7
      WP will prove itself in 2015 guarenteed
      if there was an alternative to WP which Nokia should have taken,it should have been Meego which was miles ahead of symbian,ios,android and wp7 at the time

    • @SkyforgerCFW
      @SkyforgerCFW 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CITYGROUPTV
      Exactly. The company needs to conform to the consumer.
      Nokia, at the time, was so arrogant in believing their consumers would never leave them, that they started believing the opposite to the above statement. They started believing that the consumer needed to conform to them. And, of course, that's what lead to the downfall, seeing as everybody was flocking to Apple and Samsung for their innovation at the time.

    • @karthiknaik3944
      @karthiknaik3944 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Goran Đukić Yeah people blame Windows and say it should have been android wereas it was not why Nokia lost out on marketshare
      Nokia was basically playing catch and not deciding which OS they wanted for the future
      They created Maemo,Symbian ^3(Anna and Belle) , Meego and WP7 phones all around the same time but there were rumours about each
      One day,they would said they would go Maemo,another time they said Meego,another time they would say the new updated Symbian ^3,another time they would say WP7
      People,especially the corporate crowd decided they couldnt wait anymore and moved towards Blackberry and iPhones because they were more consistent at the time
      Samsung was in a criss at the time and werent popular then...
      Only iPhones and Blackberrys had marketshare
      Once Android 2.3 and 3.0(for tablets only) released,Samsung slowly gained momentum because Google and samsung copied Apple designs etc(not taking sides here but its a fact,just see the early samsung droids)
      By then HTC,Moto etc all were losing badly with older symbian and Windows Mobile 6.5 phones and decided to go android because Google took over and there wasnt any other OS left to go to,Symbian had been dead(even the newer ^3 which was dead as WP7 got an exclusivity deal and by then developers flocked to Blackberry and ios and much later,android),Meego and Maemo were killed off as well but a bunch of ex-Nokia employees created Jolla which now has android support
      Jolla is literally what would have happened if Nokia went android(same familiar Nokia designs by some of the creators themselves)
      We dont see Jolla making waves either do we
      HP created Web OS and killed it off just as it gained momentum and could topple android and embraced android
      HP didnt regain its status with Android did it?infact it was more popular during the web os days
      Blackberry also bought QNX and created their own OS - BB10(formely QNX on the Playbook) which had android runtimes
      infact it does stuff alot better than android itself and runs non-google play apps even better than android itself
      They still didnt gain momentum did they?
      My point being people should wake up and realize Android doesnt make or break a company
      Sure it could be a shortcut but its very rare to see any company do well just because of android running on its products
      Nokia should have updated symbians kernel,continued Meego or Microsoft should never have changed the kernel with each update- Wp7,wp8,wp8.1,windows 10
      thus leaving WP7 users in the dark without an update
      It has nothing to do with android

I had other Nokia phones in Between but the only 2 phones that I had that weren't Nokia and Microsoft were the Sony Ericson 610 and also another mobile in Chile in 2004 that was made for a Spanish Company called Movistar that bought under the company Telefonica the Chilean telephone company CTC (Compañia de Telecomunicaciones de Chile). The reason why I like windows phones is because they can synchronise with Windows 10. All of my photos, outlook people's number to call and messages can be seen on the Outlook on the internet and when I connect my windows 10 software on the internet. Because my Nokia Lumia 930 I believe had a virus because it started to play funny that I bought the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and you can even put 200 GB of a Micro SD memory card too. One of its biggest mistakes was rejecting Android as a viable OS, yes they would have to use Android like so many others but in my opinion its was far better than the alternative they chose.
    Also one thing I really didn't like about what Nokia did during this period was reusing the series 40 OS on their Asha range of phones and suggesting they were smartphones when they weren't.

    To people who claim it was because they didn't go with Android. Please do explain how Sony Ericsson /Sony fell just as bad with Android. Nokia in fact did way better by going with Windows Phone. The problem Nokia had was getting too late into the game.

      why ofcourse, lets all make Microsoft the scapegoat. There obviously couldn't have been any other reason behind Elop getting a raise. Infact anyone who gets a Raise must've done something wrong. In the end, Nokia fell because of Google and Android fanboys that spread propaganda.

      Kevin Varughese If you have a look at the sales figures of Xperia X10, Arc S, or Xperia S it's nowhere near failure.
      The Xperia line up was a success until Sony came up with the Z series design and kept recycling it. The supposedly premium Sony mobiles started deteriorating in terms of quality For eg. The Xperia Z , Z1 displays are nowhere near as good (contrast and deep blacks) as the competition (or even older bravia angel one's in Xperia ion or the Arc S are way better)
      Sony fell because they charged premium for a smartphone which was not keeping up with competition.

    • @eddroos
      @eddroos 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Varughese I agrre with co0lG, I guess that Nokia had to problems:
      -That it was getting too late into the new era
      -They used Windows for phones
      Sony was doing really, really, really well with Android, but what happened? I remembered that they started to increase the cost of their phones like if they were selling iPhones, so people went for other companies. I remembered that Samsung was a good and cheaper option, so it started to win to Sony until it kill Sony.
      So, I guess that if Nokia had selected Android and if they had made good quality (like they did) phones and cheap ones, they could have won or at least being competing with other android companies.

But they didnt realize the opportunity. Sad. One big company just ended up like this.

      Probably if they were like Steve Jobs, which steers the company's direction in one way, the only way that Steve wants it to be..that is to develop and market a full touchscreen internet enabled phone that have a huge market share that will eventually attracts huge app developer base to develop apps for its app store, then Nokia will still thrive. It is because Nokia does not have a clear direction from its CEO or top management, sets up 2 teams to compete with each other which led to internal conflicts, not focus on one and only goal like Apple or maybe just not flexible enough to adapt to changes in the market like how they did not want to tie with Android, still maintaining their old principle of being unique with their own Symbian/meego OS even using Microsoft OS instead the majority Android all these led to Nokia 's fall.

      They considered it, but wanted to gamble instead. Nokia CEOs usually talked about "3rd ecosystem" - the one challenging apple os and android. With its own OS Nokia hoped to be more attractive, unique compared to multi-company android. Due to the app lack, the effect was sadly opposite.

    My first phone was a Simens A55.
    Simens left the mobile phone market shortly after it was introduced.
    My second phone was a Nokia E52
    When I got it, it became evident that SymbianOS was dead and the fall of Nokia started.
    Last year I bougth my third phone: The Lumia 550 from Microsoft with Win 10 mobile
    One of the first web articles I read on that phone was about how Win 10 mobile is going to be a total flop.

    Although the brand is gone (I probably own one of the last nokia branded lumia phones), the technology still lives on thanks to microsoft's takeover. I think the most important thing is that all the hard work nokia enegineers & designers did in the past isn't lost. The company needed to be restructured from the ground off, and that's exactely what Microsoft did. Windows phone combines nokia's exelent hardware with a fresh operating system. I'me excited for the future!

      Karthik Naik You say that as a regular consumer, but think about the number of apps and the ease of development for Android. I am not a developer. I just use an Windows 8.1 device and although it is a tablet, I use it with bluetooth mouse and keyboard mostly in Desktop mode. The only Windows app that's usable is the mail app. Other than that they're all sluggish and when I return from desktop to an app it always needs to be reloaded. Sorry, but for now Android rules. I used to be a Windows fan back in the Windows Mobile 5 and 6.x times but since Windows Phone 7 appeared I went to 'droids. I hope that's gonna change with Windows 10 and the new "Universal" apps. I really miss the Windows times, but I don't think I'll ever go to a Windows 7.x/8.x anytime soon. Most likely I'll give 10 a shot.

      No , Motorola did that and they failed , HTC ,LG ,Sharp ,Sony and Lenovo are all making loses on the smartphone market , actually the overwhelming majority of Android OEMs are losing money , in 2010/1011 if Nokia switched to Android it's logical to assume it would fail too.

  • @harshdhiman2690
    @harshdhiman2690 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I used to love Nokia and who didn't? But after 2010s the product quality degraded substantially. The product lineupw they offered looked outdated in comparison with the slimmer Samsungs and Htcs. Moreover, the software experience wasn't as great as the others. Which made people resent Nokia products. I think you can't blame Elop for everything, may be he ended the company but it was already undergoing turmoil and ruptures by itself. It was a smart move on his part as he got a huge bonus from it. Maybe he could've saved it from happening but it needed a vision which he didn't have.
    The saddest part is that Nokia lost its main ideology and character in the battle to become the best, the reason why it became so successful. Nokia is credited for many of the world's firsts. It made mobile phone affordable for the general public by making the technology more efficient and cheaper. But it didn't evolve with time. The 1100s were better than their 1020s despite of being much more advanced. Nokia always worked for the lowest class of the population but it failed to offer the modern technology to their usual customers. But Google made it possible. Nokia was once like what Google is now. To target the masses your product has to be efficient and cheap like the Moto E, G, X, Nokia lost its way. The one company that showed what a mobile is to the world failed to evolve.

    • @harshdhiman2690
      @harshdhiman2690 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** True! Apple was never a market leader in terms of volumes because of this very reason. But, it had the technology and ideas by which it has set benchmarks in the world of technology. By the early 2000s, Nokia had the volumes and the technology but by the fall of 2010, they had neither. The idea of technology has changed immensely in the last 5 decades. Google has turned-over the whole market theory by open sourcing everything; which is great for developers, and by making the technology affordable; which is great for the society as whole. This very idea made Nokia what it was!

    This month, I broke my Windows phone and I didn't want to buy another one, so I looked through my old boxes, and there it was... Nokia 6610, 14 years old. Still works like a clock. Oh, the glory days...

    If you want to know why Nokia failed, this is why. Maybe they should've brought me on as a consultant. Nokia failed to realize that humans love computers and a phone is essentially a tiny computer in your pocket. Now the size changes sure, but not the fact that it's a computer. What does a computer need to run and actually live...... Have you got the answer? It's an operating system (OS). Now Nokia basically saw what Apple released in 2007 and for the next coming years tried repeatedly on failed releases and trash design, because they had multiple internal teams competing against one another and trying to essentially write an entire fuckin operating system. They failed to realize what it takes to write a fuckin operating system from the ground up. And they sure as shit came to find out. Apple had the head start because it had the perfect Unix based OS fully fleshed out and built efficiently and just needed to build hardware to read the instructions and run its shit which is already easy with Linux. Nokia came to that realization too late.

    Sad sad sad. My very first phone was given to me from my father. It was the Nokia 2110. That phone was something special to me.
    Then I had 1 iphone and i will say, never again an iphone will i hold.
    If Nokia ever manages to become great again, i would strongly consider buying one. Terrible how they went down. How could so professional people be so incompetent...
