  • So, this is British speed hillclimbing, the event is Wiscombe Park in Devon, England. The car is a Force HC, designed for hillclimbing and it has an 1100cc Suzuki GSXR engine in it. My husband Liam and I share the car (and he chose the vid title, not me!). Liam was fine, the car was rebuilt - not as much damage as expected! For more info on the sport and an event diary visit www.britishhil... or www.motorsport....

      Yeah, locked fronts, but a conscious effort to try and add more left hand lock. Just needed to unblock the wheels momentarily and ease left.
      But when the panicking subconscious mind takes over, you’re kind of just watching yourself make mistakes. The only way to avoid it is to have the reaction burned in through practice so that it becomes nature.
      I learned that after an accident in a non ABS equipped road car. I knew what to do before the accident, and I knew what I should have done immediately after it, but I’d not really practiced it much for it to be second nature in the way that cranking lock on for this guy was.
      I got into sim-racing after that and made an effort to overdrive and overcommit rather than just practicing being neat and fast, and it has since saved me in similar moments where your conscious mind bails and hands the wheel over to subconscious baked in behaviour.
      In other words, if you told this guy the second the car came to a stop that he should have eased off the brake pressure and not kept cranking the wheel left, he’s probably very angrily and rightly tell you he knows that.
      Enough adrenaline and panic literally disconnects the slower conscious mind from the driving seat and puts a fast unthinking one in in its place.

    Its easy to say that he shouldve eased off the brake but honestly unless its an ingrained instinct, it takes massive balls to do irl. I've built a habit of it sim racing but during a downpour autox event, it felt like an insane concept to get down when you're understeering into a corner. Even when riding my motorcycle during rainy days its really hard to fight the physical instinct of bracing yourself during a slide

    A genuine accident caused by poor conditions and aquaplaning. Yes, maybe coming off the brakes for a split second then reapplying may have helped regain steerage and braking and give the option of either going for the corner or running straight to the right hand side where there is a long runoff. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing?But in the split second in which the events took place I would wager that the majority of us would have planted the middle pedal and sworn like hell. I know I would. I thought he did well to maintain the little control he had.

  • @colmreynolds9869
    @colmreynolds9869 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, slight crest in the rain led to low traction on the front, unexpectedly locking the front wheels, and understeer into the retaining wall.
    Could have been too hard on the pedal but probably comes down to approaching too fast for conditions. It happens to anyone brave enough to push the limit.

  • @AdrianBawn
    @AdrianBawn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Everyone is saying "he should have applied less brakes" but thats not the issue. This car doesnt seem to have ABS. Its not about the amount of brakes but the fact you have to pulse them. Without abs and you have to keep pumping the brakes to allow for some roll to keep control.
    This is not a natural skill to learn, as your instinct is to just stamp on the brakes, and anyone whos driven a car since the early 90s wont have learnt it by default but when driving a car like this you have to re-learn all of your skills.
    Hooning up a track like that, in a car like that, at that speed, while NOT being prepared to brake properly will almost always end up like this.
