- Impossible Climb Arette 2023: Drawing a record attendance of approximately 5,000 visitors on Sunday, August 20th, the renowned "Montée impossible Arette" event showcased exhilarating challenges for its participants. Despite their best efforts, no rider could conquer the summit of the hill.
Adding to the spectacle were numerous custom-built bikes, boasting over 100+ hp. These monster bikes, equipped with large tires and powerful engines, roared and strained against the incline, trying their utmost to complete the daunting hill climb.
The sun blazed overhead, bearing down on the participants of the 2023 edition of this Arette challenge, with thermometers recording temperatures surpassing 35°C, unusually high for the typically cooler mountainous region.
Recognized as one of the five events in the French Hill Climb Championship, the Arette race features a track that's 230 meters long and 8 meters wide. This track, riddled with obstacles, leads to the coveted local ham prize which awaits those daredevils who reach the hilltop of Mouline.
Given the slope's steep incline, ranging between 70 and 82%, it's instantly clear to any onlooker that this ascent is not for the faint-hearted.

When the hill is tough enough to prevent anyone from completing it, and there is a wide variation in the completion rates, I would say it is perfect.

Seems to only get more difficult to climb the hill as the race progresses because the dirtbikes keep digging into the hill.

My 6yo got a fever, I gave him medicine and wait until he deeply sleeps. TH-cam suggested this at 4 in the night. Don’t know why I’m even watching it, but so much fun 😊
You know what would be a good idea is if they attach a thin paracord rope to the bike and have a pulley system at the top of the hill that pulls on it as it comes up. Not enough pull to add any assistance but just enough to hold the bike up before it tumbles back down on the rider. Similar to how a rock climber can go up the face of a mountain without assistance but if they fall, the rope catches them.

Need a smaller front wheel, an engine with great torque at lower RPM and smoother throttle response, stand on the pegs, lean forward, keep speed just enough to carry through, and make sure your hospital insurance is paid up.

One has a feeling that an electric motor cycle with suitable battery placement could be a winner. You get the insane torque of the electric motor at all RPM's and the weight of the batteries could be used to keep the front wheel in contact with the ground.
@@jonathanbuzzard1376 They are torquey. They produce maximum torque at stall rpm and it degrades in linear fashion from there all the way to max rpm. Your idea is note worthy and no doubt some one will build it one of these days.
I remember being with my father and his friend way back in the woods on trials we used to ride. There was one very steep hill that wasn't part of the trail really, but it was just a challenge. I was on a Yamaha TTR-125 and I was just a kid, but they were both on quads. Robbie I think had a Blaster and my father was riding a Polaris of some kind. They both tried to climb that hill. Robbie fell off and the bike came back down and my father ended up getting stuck up against a tree.
The hill wasn't nearly as long as this one, but it was every bit as steep.
It’s a very interactive sport. Nice to see the spectators get up close and personal with he flying motorbikes.
Do you mean the event staff wearing pretty much no protective gear? yes, that's nuts but I assume they have a certain level of 'safety training' at least, haha. But I think the spectators themselves are seen at some distance behind barricades, are they not? Now I'm sure some of those spectators would like to be right in the mix of the action, safety be damned just like they do in the Tour de France!

50 years ago I looked like these poor souls while trying to ride my older brother’s 250 Suzuki dirt bike on level ground! Didn’t dump it but the torque almost jerked me free from the handlebars! These people are fearless!
An RM250 2stroke? Those things were terrifying, rather like the Honda 250R 3-wheeler that got them banned. The power bands were too much for newbies.

Back in Utah in the late 70's and early 80's they had a Hill Climb called Widow Maker. They had Harley's, Hondas, Suzuki, you name it. (1200cc) Those were street bikes converted into hill climbing.
They would be a good competition for this Hill Climb. They might just Kick their asses... Just saying. I love this Shit!!!
We use to have a picture on our garage wall of this guy on Widow maker. He had the dorkiest face😂.

If your into this sport look up the Winemaker hill climb at point of the Mountain in Utah. It used to be quite a show in the 1970's. You can still see the ruts on the hill. The U haven't done it in decades.
It is so exciting to see people gathering together to celebrate and rejoice in a healthy way. What wars? Why a tight pain if we can be brothers
When it comes to spikes vs. common sense, always choose more spikes.
In the spirit of the Ententente Cordial I say we combine this with out great cheese rolling event. You ride to the top and then run down to gather the cheese.
I laugh my ass off on every ride. The mountain kicks your ass. Everyone thinks they have the secret...so funny. Love the bailouts.

The ballsy part is knowing when you flip your bike and the back tire will turns into a flesh ripping chainsaw wanting to eat you... but you still get on and go for it.

I used to watch these competitions on ESPN, the ocho, back in the day…usually near midnight, iirc.
the lack of wide shots really takes the spectacle out of this sport. If you aren't intimately familiar with the steepness of this hill you aren't going to appreciate the up close footage.

Im sure that these guys know what they are doing but I can't see the advantage of stretching the motorcycle. And keeping the engine closer to the front would help keep the front end down in theory first bump on the incline you hit and it is working against you.
It would be awesome to have one of these bikes designed with the self balancing technology like the Hoverboard or the Segway.
