Yes and no. It gets chewed up and ruts and stuff but sometimes the first bikes also knock down the rougher and steeper parts especially on hills that have a return road that zig zag back down.
Watching these as a former pro moto racer, I was seeing certain lines or options that I don't think was occurring to most of them. Then finally @4:48 this guy did what I had been seeing! Instead of slowing down to navigate those choppy lips, accelerate through the first one and use the momentum and compressed suspension to jump the next one up on to more favorable ground. This is as far as I've gotten so far, someone may make it, I just had to point that out before continuing 💯👏🏼😂

You know what would be a good idea is if they attach a thin paracord rope to the bike and have a pulley system at the top of the hill that pulls on it as it comes up. Not enough pull to add any assistance but just enough to hold the bike up before it tumbles back down on the rider. Similar to how a rock climber can go up the face of a mountain without assistance but if they fall, the rope catches them.

Most bikes using crotch rocket engines and such generally only use second gear. It's pretty common to not even have a way to shift them outside of having another person click it into gear for the rider at the start.
Do you mean the event staff wearing pretty much no protective gear? yes, that's nuts but I assume they have a certain level of 'safety training' at least, haha. But I think the spectators themselves are seen at some distance behind barricades, are they not? Now I'm sure some of those spectators would like to be right in the mix of the action, safety be damned just like they do in the Tour de France!
This is one of the gnarliest forms of motorsport imo. You're basically guaranteed to take a big crash if you don't make it clean. Insane gumption from the competitors, much respect.
50 years ago I looked like these poor souls while trying to ride my older brother’s 250 Suzuki dirt bike on level ground! Didn’t dump it but the torque almost jerked me free from the handlebars! These people are fearless!
Back in Utah in the late 70's and early 80's they had a Hill Climb called Widow Maker. They had Harley's, Hondas, Suzuki, you name it. (1200cc) Those were street bikes converted into hill climbing. They would be a good competition for this Hill Climb. They might just Kick their asses... Just saying. I love this Shit!!!
I believe they moved the Widow Maker out there in Morgan. Just off I 84. They still run it twice a year. Cycles in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter.
My first bike was an old 1965 Yamaha with a single cylinder 125cc engine. It was set up for hill climbing, but I used it like a normal dirt bike. I took it to our local bike repair place to get the throttle grip replaced after a tree jumped out of nowhere and smashed it. When I went to pick it up, the mechanic pointed out that it had an extra button on the throttle grip this time. Imagine my surprise when I pushed it and the bike started! It had an electric starter!

Robbie fell off and the bike came back down and my father ended up getting stuck up against a tree. The hill wasn't nearly as long as this one, but it was every bit as steep.
You can tell some of these guys are just “guys” who built a bike. It’s everything to them. They’re the ones diving after their bikes when they start falling. The guys launching their bikes, they have sponsors.
Need a smaller front wheel, an engine with great torque at lower RPM and smoother throttle response, stand on the pegs, lean forward, keep speed just enough to carry through, and make sure your hospital insurance is paid up.
One has a feeling that an electric motor cycle with suitable battery placement could be a winner. You get the insane torque of the electric motor at all RPM's and the weight of the batteries could be used to keep the front wheel in contact with the ground.

To any Hill Climbers, Is it better to ATTACK the hill at the beginning while the hill is still fresh or latter as the day goes on? After the soil has loosened up...

Some hills have workers who try to grab the bikes with a hook on a rope. But the bikes dont tumble down nearly as often or as far as you'd think.
