    I’ve done this, made a dress too big. It sat in my wardrobe for six months waiting for me to come up with a plan to save it.
    I put it in the trash can. It’s finally out of my house and I don’t have to worry about it.
    I’m very pleased about it now.

    • @SparkleFeyed

      Honestly, if I weren't making videos out of my projects, a lot of them would remain unfixed. Cheers for the trash though! It is a hard thing to do sometimes!

    Thank you! New Look patterns will never be purchased by me! I made one, that was a mess, watched you, and decided to avoid them like the Plague! I've sewed for well over 50 years, and I'd rather sew Vogue blindfolded than ever touch a New Look again!

    This is the BEST SEWING VIDEO EVER!!! I love the "Mysteries of Udolfo" frame, it's just great. Don't kid yourself: a lot of content is so nausea ding that people turn the sound down. Nobody will ever do that for one of your videos! Besides, who hasn't been suckered into one of those "one hour" patterns? The money these charletons have pocketed off of our lost innocence! (brushes away a tear) YOU had the guts to document the whole, sordid story AND you finished the dress! Pat yourself on the back!

    It seams like this was your first big sew? Just remember our first sews are like the first pancakes you make… usable but not always perfect. Make sure you give yourself leeway and Grace. I’ve found the hardest part of sewing is picking out the fabric. You’ve got this.

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not my first big sew, but the first time I finished a pattern. I've started them before, but I have never finished! Your metaphor is quite fitting, as I am eating pancakes right now 🥞

    Love the video and how you committed you were to make it work. I made the same dress and had same issues but, made it in a rayon that had more drape. So, it made it almost wearable. I put these type of dresses in the 'house dress' category of my closet. Things I wear around the house:) Love your sense of humor as well.

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! Yeah, I saw some reviews that suggested rayon... which makes more sense than the stiff quilter's cotton I used 😂 Live and learn, though! And it does make a spectacular house dress 😊

    I admire your perseverance. You got there in the end. I'm a slow sewer and have learned that that's ok and to enjoy the process. No one knows how long something took you to make - they're just so impressed with the end result. (Well, until I inevitably point out the flaws. 😁)
    It's so true that everything else we feel we should be doing could expand to fill our whole lives if we let it. Sometimes we just need to sit down and sew! (Until a dog visits. It's only right that everything stops for that kind of huge love.)

I thought it was cool that we matched but they grew out of that phase real quick🙄 Then we had two little boys and I had very little time to sew anything. I started buying dresses on the clearance rack…and Goodwill…and nowadays just use my sewing machine for alterations and mending. Occasionally I stop and page through the new pattern books but it’s just wishful thinking…I wish you much success and joy in your sewing adventures!! ☺️

    I bought the same pattern and cotton material and decided to get back into dress making with a simple one hour project. I brushed aside concerns that fabric with no stretch and a design with no zips might be an issue and set about unfolding pages to find the two pieces I needed. Hang on, two? Is that all? Recheck everything (i read the Spanish as well just in case) and yes, only two pieces. A dart at the bust line and no other shaping? I measured myself and went to start drawing up my adjustments as the pattern suggested. The piece for the back of the dress was marked up for sizes 10 to 22 in steps of two. The front piece only had sizes 12, 16 and 20. Of course, none of those were what i wanted even before letting out the waist a bit. The longer I stared in dismay, the more I felt the size 12 neckline would end up drooping down to my bra once made. At this point I googled reviews and came across your video. Decision made. 2 days before my holiday is not the time to start this and I'll look for a different pattern to use on my material when I get back! Thank you for saving me from a certain disaster and late nights! Xx

I recently attempted to sew a nightgown as a moving away gift for my cousin by using one of my night gowns as a pattern. Same mistake . I also used quilting fabric because it was the pattern I wanted. Long story short, I gifted her a pi!low case . And everyone hates on them, because they feel like they failed, because the things fit exactly as yours did and most of us don't love that look, but it isn't actually wrong. • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did cut it down a bit, but because I used the bigger pattern piece, I wouldn't (and didn't) have the right shape if I cut it down too much. I sorta guessed where the darts should have been, and the arm holes were too small. I don't cut out the pattern until I am 10,000% sure anymore, and I keep the scrap pattern in case I need to tape different sizes together. I should have noticed right away that this one was too big, honestly. It is visibly obvious 😂

    I’ve only just come across your site. I loved that you tried to make this in one hour. I think your first problem was that you assumed the sizing was US dress sizes but as I understand it New Look patterns are a British Company so the sizing would be British therefore you would need to go down a couple of sizes. We have this problem all the time with the likes of Simplicity patterns that are USA manufactured.

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pattern sizes in general aren't the same size as dress sizes. I did take measurements and use the guide on the pattern, but I opted for the largest out of all of my measurements. From what I have read and heard since, New Look is bad at sizing anyway, but I should have held the pattern up to myself before cutting out the pieces - I would have quickly figured out that it was way too big!

    Hi there, some of my best results have developed from an accident or mistake. Putting the finishing touches on a kimono and suddenly the iron was too hot!. As a result, my project was altered with a beaded embellishment that looked pretty special.

    What a journey! I think the problem was the fabric, too stiff. The front bulge and the draping wouldn't be a problem with a cold silk? Lovely color, anyway, I see way you fall for it :) I have a similar problem once. Thank you for share it.

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree! Rayon was suggested in the review. It has a much nicer drape than quilter's cotton. I didn't really give a lot of thought to the fabric type at the time; I just thought, "ooh, pretty!" 😂

      I agree. I've read some reviews where people used drapier fabrics and it turned out better. As a beginner, when I saw cotton broadcloth on the pattern, I went with that because of how easy it is to sew. Lesson learned, I suppose! Glad you learned something as well 😊

    This video is so funny! I laughed and laughed through it. I retired and decided to start sewing again. My first dress is giving me headaches just like you have been experiencing with this dress! I have taken it in several times and still it is too big! It is a hi-low dress, and I’m wondering why I even made it in the first place! I will persist, though, just like you did. I love your finished dress, even though it took much longer than 1 hr.! My dress does have pockets too!

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree! A drapier fabric (and perhaps a mockup to check sizing) would have yielded much better results. I didn't really know a lot about fabric at the time, only that quilter's cotton is plentiful, cheap, and easy to sew 😂

    This is sadly hilarious. I looked for this video due to a conversation in a sewing group about whether this pattern is appropriate for a beginning sewer. You trials show that it is a terrible choice IF you want a useable dress on the first try with this pattern.

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn't a very flattering dress, even when you get it right. Maybe if you use a rayon or stretch fabric, but that isn't great for beginners to work with either. Glad I could help ☺️

    How do you know what size to go by if you don't go buy dress size you wear? Just by doing your bust and waist and hip measurements and go by that on a pattern when buying?I never bought a new look pattern, are they easy to understand? I think kits because the fabric is cotton that it doesn't lay like you want it. I feel for you.

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A different fabric would've definitely yielded a better result! Yes, I took my measurements and used the sizing chart on the pattern. The directions were pretty easy to understand, but I get the impression that sizing is a universal issue with their patterns.

    Sewist of 55 years here- those one hour patterns are so bad. They skip steps and don’t allow for time spent finishing seams or any kind of fitting. BTW, the front stomach part was not the worst, that was the neckline of the front bodice and sleeves. None of this was your fault, it’s a bad pattern.

    • @SparkleFeyed

    I have the same material (used it for masks)
    ...Dress is
    very cute. Tummy poufy included because on me, I have tummy pouf that needs accommodation
    although here is a "tip": knowing the fabric, it is a fairly stiff, midweight, even weave cotton -Wash the dickens out of it...after a few rounds in the washer and dryer, it starts to soften up and therefore drape a little softer. You might find it nicer to wear next summer.
    I use material like this all the time for summer pants which after a summer of heavy wear, wash and dry, become PJs in the winter

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the tip! I have already noticed it is a bit softer. I know I am supposed to wash the fabric first, but I love the crispness of fresh fabric so much that I never do 😂

    Ah, big four patterns, so many lies, such confusing instruction, so much ease that the patterns are huge and fit strangely but not enough information on the envelope and hard to find on the pattern pieces. Insert “hair pulling emoji”.

  • @SirenaSpades

    Experienced seamstress here. The best thing to do is to make the largest size in accordance to your largest measurment, and alter down the waist (or whatever needs downsizing) once it is completed, rather than attempting to cut and piece down the pattern while you make it. Learn how to do alterations - rather than attempting to rework a garment with elastic, etc.

    • @SparkleFeyed
      @SparkleFeyed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the plan, but it was so big that I unpicked it and cut a smaller size. The biggest problem was that the shape of the top had been cut off when I cut out the larger sized pattern (this is still a little bit of a problem, as it made the sides a bit too low and the sleeves too tight). I'm not sure that doing alterations with this much of a difference in size would have yielded different results, but I can't say for sure. Bottom line was that the pattern sizing chart was off by a lot, and I trusted it more than I should have 🤷
