    3 lovely makes Erin 😊 I have made a few new look patterns and like their designs. The sizing can be a bit off, I find that with all the big 4 patterns though. I wish they had more useful finished garment measurements on the packet than just like the neck to waist length!

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you!
      I totally agree about Big 4 sizing. I don’t know why they even put body measurements on the envelope when they also add a ton of ease. It seems like they’re getting *better* about adding useful measurements on the envelope, but it’s not consistent. I don’t know what their fixation with neck to waist length is 😂

      Sounds great! It’s a great pull-on flowy dress. I recommend measuring your bicep and the pattern piece to see if there’s enough ease (unless you make the sleeveless view!).

    New look 6229, I sewed it back in high school (back in the 90s, and it's still a pattern that's easy to find, which says something about the pattern) view A, except I did a second shorter top layer. I wore it for years, even through 3 pregnancies... that's when I got tired of it. I've been planning to make a new version because I've always loved the diagonal look, it would be a great scrap buster for me. It's definitely not as quick of a sew as it claims, but it's still really easy.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I love the seam lines on that one! I’m impressed that it’s pregnancy friendly too! I didn’t buy many maternity clothes because it’s such a relatively short period, but it would be nice to have something like that dress when I’m pregnant the next time instead of rotating through the same tired t shirts as last time.

    Leet me suggest that you make the sleeves the right size for you by adding a gusset to each one. There is bound to be a video for making them. I have used them to add to ready made and to garments I made in a hurry without measuring, so I just added gussets. They can be used under arms and in the crotch of pants.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh that’s a great idea! Thank you!
      I may not do it on this shirt because I wear it very rarely, but it’s a common problem for me, so I definitely need to keep gussets in mind for the future. I know there are a few ready to wear shirts I’d wear more if there were a gusset. Thank you!

    I only started sewing New Look a couple of months ago. Susan at Seaside Stitches made New Look 6707 and I just had to make it. I've made one with the collar and one without. I'm happy with them both and they are very comfortable to wear. I do think a couple of narrow front vertical darts (fisheye) would make the top more flattering, so I might add those to the pattern. Because of fabric constraints on both tops, I had to narrow the sleeves, so I just gathered them; I can't even imagine how voluminous the pleated sleeves must be because my gathered one are still super full. Since I didn't seem to have too many problems with fit, when I saw New Look on sale at Hobby Lobby I bought a dozen, mostly tops and a few dresses. It's kind of sad that now that I've started sewing with New Look they will soon be gone.
    I have a larger bottom half and often have fit issues when making a new pattern, even Burda ones. What I sometimes do is if the first iteration turns out too big, instead of taking off the waist band and taking in the darts, if the fabric is a medium or light weight, I just unpick part of the waistband facing and add elastic to the back waistband, stitching it in the ditch in the side seams. It usually gathers it in so little that it doesn't even look gathered when worn. I then add larger darts to the pattern for future makes. Sometimes those bottoms with elastic added prove to be some of the most comfortable ones I own. I think I tend to do this mainly because I don't make toiles, per se, but instead make workable muslins. Maybe it's just a mental game I play, but considering my first garment a workable muslin frees me up from stressing about wasting good fabric, and I can enjoy the process more. Sometimes those workable muslins turn into favorite garments and sometime they are only occasionally worn, or worn around the house, but I've only had to repurpose one so far. Anyway, it's an option for the future if a waist is just a little too big.

      I picked up N6707 since you had mentioned it in a comment recently. I think I’ll make the one without the collar first, and thank you for the heads up about the sleeves! I’ll probably do the same with mine because I don’t like HUGELY poofy sleeves. It makes me feel like a football player 😂
      Thank you for the suggestion on the waistband! That sounds like a great way to save a garment. Making it too big is definitely easier to save than too small.
      I hope you have a wonderful weekend and maybe get to sew a New Look up!

      @@ErinSews I'm actually thinking about hacking the collar on N6707 to look more like the collar on the Friday Pattern Co. Patina blouse; it's more angular and smaller. I've got other things in the sewing queue at the moment, but I'll let you know how it turns out when I get to it.

    Hi Erin! The only New Look pattern I have sewn is 6216 and I just made that a month or so ago. Before the famous 99 cent sale I only had 5 New Look patterns but now I have a lot more to choose from 🙂 I really wanted to get the button up shirt you made but it was not at my Hobby Lobby ☹️ My Joann doesn’t carry New Look so I’ll have to see about ordering it sometime. Ordering from their website is how I got my original 5 New Look patterns about a year ago.

    I have both your New Look patterns. The camp shirt and the flowing dress. Love them both. I have made the shirt three times and the dress, twice. I had to adjust the dress pattern across the back, because, like you, it was too tight in that area. Other than that, i love that pattern. I made bias tape, for the neck. It turned out great. 😘

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great idea with the bias tape! I’ll be doing that next time I think. The facings are just so fiddly and annoying when I’m wearing them since the neckline is so wide and moves a lot as I move.
      The shirt is such a great pattern! I want to find some fun fabric and make more for this summer.

    Sizing out, like I am, is very frustrating to me!❤

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s definitely frustrating, especially since the size range isn’t consistent (for example it’s not ALWAYS 10-22) so you really have to pay attention to it. It’s a bummer to like a pattern, and then realize it might now work. Or buy it and TRY to make it work because you’re soooooo close.

    Hi Erin! I'm halfway between two HL locations, but have only visited one recently. I wasn't there to look at patterns and wouldn't have gone to look, except the woman cutting my fabric (yes I did 🤨) mentioned to go take a look.... I like the look of the sleeveless version of that camp shirt. Last summer I got the notion I should put some sleeveless collared button-ups in my closet, and only have two so far. So I would like to revisit that this summer. Rockin' the flamingos today!! Happy sewing 😘

    I have to agree with you about the sizing - I don't even look at New Look patterns as I know they don't have my size - though some of their knit patterns do go bigger. It's a real shame.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      True! The knit patterns do seem to give a bit more wiggle room and have better sizing than their woven patterns. I don’t know if it’s part of keeping costs low (New Look patterns are only $3.99 at most, even on Simplicity.com) but it’s a shame to have such limited sizing on both ends. I would think a wider size range would equal more sales? I’m no business guru though

    HI, Erin. I went by my Hobby Lobby late last week and picked up about 15 patterns. One of them was the skirt pattern. Some were for me and some for my granddaughter. My Hobby Lobby has also shuffled the notions around. I needed a zipper and had to hunt them down. At my store I had noticed quite some time ago that the buttons went from two racks to just one. I've sewn some New Look patterns before. As with all big four patterns, they seem to be harder to fit than indie patterns. Some have turned out quite large and others on the small side. Definitely have to check the finished garment measurements, even if you have to actually measure the pattern pieces yourself, before deciding on a size.

    • @ErinSews
      @ErinSews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They have a ton of kid’s patterns! I picked up quite a few for my daughter and there were even more than I left on the shelf.
      I heard somewhere that HL is eventually going to be getting rid of all the patterns so it definitely seems like they’re doing away with at least part of the sewing department unfortunately.
      I need to be more diligent about measure the pattern pieces. I did that a lot with the Style Arc Francesca shirt because I made a toile and honestly it’s something I should always do. It saved me a lot of disappointment.
