VW Beetle Restoration - Strip, Clean & Sandblast the Chassis

- Today we take the chassis down to bare metal. I remove all the lil bits. Scrape all the crude, pressure wash, sandblast and test fit the new pans. Check it out! =)

Mr. CT is good in this job. But there is something almost funny about it. Mr. CT seems to have a certain amount of enthusiasm and energy when he starts working on a car, but after a wile it seems to deminish. That's the only expanation I can think of why most of the projects gets stranded at the point of reassembly. Or perhaps Mr. CT doesn't like this part of the restauration. In that case it's perhaps a good idea to find a partner-mechanic'who likes to end the projects, by putting the parts together to get restored cars.
Because I do hope Mr. CT himself or with the help of someone else will reassemble the other cars, like the Ghia and the Porsches.
For the work he's doing, it looks very well done. But for the projects to finish, it looks that a bit of support or co-operation is required.

I quit with him after he quit working on the dragon. Have to come back every now and the to see if he is back to working on it again. He never is. He's always starting something else.
YES......Using the air chisel to remove the old pans. great job.
When you took the gear shift rod apart, you should not have had to do that. The whole rod with that end on it will come out the front hole. At 7:22, when you pull out the left side cable, it goes to both sides of the tunnel to open the heater valves for the rear seat. The right side cables are for the opening and shutting the valves for the main heater inlets to the cabin. I took a '^^ completely apart to build Myers Manx dune buggy. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about how a bug is put together. You are doing very well. Keep up the project. Thanks.

I thought the 914 was going to back on the road in a couple of weeks🙄. I cant watch anymore projects started then go nowhere. Sorry ct.

I agree with this comment. I have watched you begin rusty, the swamp dragon, the Ghia, the 914 and now this beetle. None of them have been completed. What is going on? Why are we seeing multiple tear downs without a completion?

Just a quick comment on your project, you've come a long ways since the first time watch you do this, Your learn as you go is starting to pay off.
Those are the best looking floor pans I've seen nice quality and fitment.

Hi CT, good job on stripping the chassis down. The sand blaster works well, but I too like my wire brush on a motor. It really cleans up metal good. But it needs to be precleaned before or some of the debris will be burned into the metal with a wire brush I have found. You made quick work of the tunnel covering with the crowbar. That was impressive I must say. I hate working in the heat, so I felt for you out there.
congratulations for the workshop, beautiful work on vw, I'm from Brazil and I've been following you for a long time!! I want to do a project like this, but here in Brazil access to tools is still expensive, and spare parts, especially the bodywork, do not offer quality!! but, again congratulations on the project and a big hug!!

Like the old school Estwing blue grip hammer. Have had mine since the early 70's. Great tool for a lifetime. Taking the old insulation off the tunnel I've used an inexpensive Harbor Freight oscillating tool with a wood blade attached but filed the teeth down on the blade. Made for real quick work of getting that stuff to release.
not sure if a crowbar looks like a crows claw/foot, but in The Netherlands we call it a 'koevoet', what translates to cowsfoot. 😁

Those are some nice floorpans. To coat the inside of the tunnel I really like the Eastwood Eastwood Internal Frame Coating it has nozzle on along hose and you just pull it through as you spray coating everything inside.
CT how will you remember where all the wires and cables and clips go? Will you use the video of taking it apart? Can't wait to see the next chapter.

Yes tools shared with others helps out CT :) got lots tools my late Grandfather on mom side left me when he past away plus my late Dad & Uncle to and some over 50 + years old Lol ! One cool is socket Alin Wrench shape L put socket end need on short or long end from 3/8 to 13/16 sizes and 6 to 12 point bolt in hex to square shape to ! Funny parts it from Ireland and over 85 years old was for Horse Carriage and farmers used for tight up plows or cultivators in Horse drawn of 1920 to 1950's made this tool ! Got 8 socket sizes ! Build excellent and strong from Cast Iron all of it by Blacksmiths did them and factory operations!

Looks like you are working your way up to the next level, getting some tools to help you fabricate, etc. I know it’s hard to get to that next step, bodywork that people can see, but I know you can do it! I stopped working on my bug for a long time and ended up sidetracked on a moped because it was just more manageable. I’m gearing up to brave the next step on my bug, “just the heater channels.” LOL 😂 looking forward to your videos.

Thank you for filming your process of removing the stock VW factory noise insulation (Tar rapping). I would of never thought of using a crowbar to remove all that stock car insulation. From experience, next time you remove any VW. Insulation, use a car heat gun. Warm up that VW car insulation. Makes it Easier to remove. Plus, less crystallize Tar particles flying when your removing the car insulation. Also, using engine degreaser & power wash, helps remove years of grease, and grime that is build up for many years.
For cleanup and blasting, I've switched to the blast attachment for the pressure washer. NO dust and no air compressor comstantly running. Cheap too ! The 'Zon has the cheap ones for $35

Good stuff, I like to seam seal all my over laps and butt joints of metal after black epoxy. Then bed line the floor and belly of the pan, calls for sound deadening and extra corrosion protection.. that's what I do to all my builds.. anywho, can't wait to see the nectar episode..

Excellent video CT :) thought lots projects you be working on lately ruff to clean also related to when did a 1960 Willies Jeep in to Hot Rod in 2013 the fuel tank orgnail was took me 2 month of soak it also razor sharp scraper down rubber tar mix seal top body from and over 6 inches thick on and task to do when no hoist lift up ! Also had on 4 blocks high of ground plus 4 plank sheet boards in place plus 4 jack stands up hold to hold plus straps too tight so won't move ! Plus had use chisel too get tar pry back to also and Crow Bar got name of claw they got super tight grip so won't come lose on your hand or shoulder to ! Claw on feet of bird too and why name that way on tool!

Great work CT, this is no mean feat to remove the body and strip a chassis. Only thing I would have done is cover the fuel line up when washing the chassis and I'd have put some rust prevention on the whole of the chassis after sandblasting as it will flash rust really quick. I'm surprised what good condition it's in, especially the framehead. Keep going.

E gratificante assistir a seus vídeos. Fiquei maravilhado com a qualidade o kit assoalho. Em meu pais os assoalhos deixam a desejar na qualidade, mas principalmente com a chapa que utilizam, muito fina. Também sou aficionado por boas ferramentas, "ferramenta certa no lugar certo".
Those Floor Pans those got now are lots thick metal and looks lasting forever in 60 years CT 😳 before need change again also like these one's too !
That greasy crud is a pain in the a*se to scrape and clean off but it protected the back end of that main chassis saving it from rusting away and why it looks as new. But how rewarding is it to get that crud off!
Overall you have an excellent main chassis as those new floorpans proved because they fitted spot on. The few inches of metal repairs in that corner really are no big deal.

CT like your channel because you are just like me I have 5 classics 3 65 mustang, 71and 72 chevy nova, I am working in all 5 at same time, have not finish one completetly yet, they are your cars and you work on them anytime and in any order you want, just know I will keep watching your channel. Great job; Wolfsburg West pans are the best; 18 gauge just like the originals. Great fit; you get what you pay for. Leave the original rear braces on the back; no need to replace them.

I use easy off oven cleaner and let it soak for a bit. Then pressure wash it. Blow all the water off and hit it with some purple power and simple green, let it soak for a bit. Then hit it with the pressure washer again and blow it off with air. At that point it should be really clean and ready for blast

Casey didn’t realize it as yet that was factory corrosion prevention back in the day so when you finish painting or powder coating that sub frame you’re probably one of considered to put some of that type or a similar corrosion abatement back in place just a thought perhaps you already knew it but I don’t know.
Try using an oscillating tool with scraping blades to scrap easier then by hand, different blades make it easy.
You could put the 2.0 from the 914 in it for a while. Transforms it 😁
the fact that’s an all numbers matching l87 pearl white beetle makes this so much desirable, like for me 🥹
Good afternoon sir I am watching you dismantle your project and I’m happy for you to do that but what concerns me is the safety and the way you do it no goggles no gloves when you dismantle rush metal and you get cut with it or it gets in your eye it’s very dangerous. Best wishes on getting it done you’re braver man that I am trying to restore your Rusty frame on that frame.
I’ve mentioned about the gloves to him lots of times , but like a lot of young men they don’t listen. I wish I’d have listened 40 years ago also. My hands are real bad now, with all the oil/diesel etc over the years.

When you finally get to point to re-install new floor pans, be sure to get a spot weld drill to do the job more easily.

In the 50s, 60d and early 70s, VW used Tar paper/cardboard for insulation of the vehicle. Though it gave rust proofing of the covered area, well you see the mess it make in removing it. And it did not rust proof the other side as you can see.

Now that after you blasted it you gotta be concerned about flash rushed so you need to put a rust converter on right away followed by an epoxy primer
I only have two words for you Multi Tool
Nosotros le sacamos completamente la chapa plana del chasis, para limpiar a fondo por dentro, cambiar la linea de combustible, caño de acelerador, etc...
Pintar con una buena base protectora, y luego soldar de nuevo esa chapa, con una buena pasada de MIG...

Save the Ebrake cables they are fine clean them up and reuse them.
