Good job! I have had 20 of these era trucks. The silver box on the D/S fender well is almost always a culprit. Keep an extra one under the seat. But the spark at the release of the key may be a good tip for diagnosing (also an ohm meter if you know the spec and the problem is not intermittent). By the sound of your starter, you either have a low battery or your ignition timing is a little too advanced. With the pickup coil swap, timing should be checked anyhow. Sometimes only on the 351m/400's for some reason, the roll pin on the distributor shaft shears at the cam driven gear. The symptom would be a no start also. Popping the cap off will reveal that the rotor does not turn while cranking the starter. In that case, the distributor would have to be removed and a .50 cent pin replaced. I also see you have the big front axle. The Dana 60. Everyone wants that axle. Perfect for a 12 valve Cummins swap...I see you have mentioned a diesel swap below in the comments. Good luck with the project. Do drive the truck and enjoy it before tearing it all apart if you can. The projects are always bigger than one anticipates and life gets in the way sometimes.
Great video. Thank you. My 77 f100 with the 302 is the same set up. Had been having issues starting and or stalling out. After changing all of the other stuff like spark plugs and wires, ignition coil and the ICM, this was the last thing since it wasn't a fuel issue. And it worked. Fired right up
Thanks man. Fingers crossed this is the problem with mine. I have 12.48v to the coil with key in on position and 10.5ish when cranking, but I'm not getting spark. This tells me that the ignition is sending power to the module and the module is sending power to the coil, but the sensor is not sending spark to the spark plugs. Replacing the sensor tomorrow and I will update if it starts my truck.
maybe the camera angle made it seem off. but the center of the coil has to be centered on each of the rotor fingers. there is elongated holes on the pick up coil mounting holes to allow you to move it around.
I have a 1979 F250 4×4 Gas 4spd Manual. I haven't been able to get it to start since buying it almost 2 months ago and driving it home. I've looked all over the internet but I can't find a darn thing. I've been lead to two possible culprits after replacing the fuses, regulator, coil pack, and battery. Either I'm having a grounding issue or my distributor. I'm getting air and fuel in the carb, when the battery has a full charge the alt will spin, but no spark. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out my issue.
@FreeznOffRoad I sure as heck will try. I'm 19 with the littlest bit of knowledge. Everything I've learned is either from a video or forum dating back to 2010. I'd this trick you did for your distributor doesn't work for me I'm just gonna bite the bullet and tear everything down starting at the wire harness and work forwards from there.
@@FreeznOffRoad will do. It'll likely be Saturday or Sunday when I can get around to it. Busy helping family with more important matters first and all that jazz.
@FreeznOffRoad hey I'm supposed to tell you how it went! Dang, it's already been a month. Well, shoot, I got the truck running, replaced the battery and the alternator, and when I get around to affording it I'll get a new distributor, the old one needs cleaning now and then, victim of a bad wire somewheres along the messy wiring harness. I wish my old Adderall addicted mechanic friend were still around. He'd get it looking brand new and better looking than a brand new Ford's wiring harness.
@@FreeznOffRoad i got a pickup coil for my 82 mustang, wirings been hacked... thinking of just cutting the pig tails to make it work. dont really wanna pull the whole dizzy out xD!
Not a pick up coil, it's called a module. The tooth looking thing is called a paddle. Don't lose the roll pin that holds the paddle. Also the fender mounted module will go bad. Just upgrade to a msd6 or other brand. Turn you duraspark into hall effect dizzy. The cd boxes controls the actual spark
Hey buddy I have a 77 Ford with a built 429 by a performance shop..I set engine in hooked everything up turns over but will not start checked timing couple time but still nothing even change distributors still nothing....can you help me please
Thanks so much for posting! This worked for my 1978 F150 also. Was beating my head against the wall after changing the duraspark box and the ignition.

Thanks for the tip on the silver box on the driver side. mine is still original so that might be my problem.

@@FreeznOffRoad how is the pin removed?
@@gorybonghit3211 I wasn't able to remove it, all I could do was slide it's up with the star. Make sure you oil it to brake it from the rust.

Nice work bro!!!
Thx!
An easy way to check your pickup is to carry out an Ohm check on it. 0-400 is a no go, and anything above 1400 is a no go as well I believe.
Gotcha🙂
Cool truck! What are you plans with it?
I want to lift it at least 10", put a diesel engine in it...and make it pretty!😁👍
What ended up being the repair to get it fired up? Just replaced the mechanical fuel pump and no go.
engine fires right up gas str8 into the carb tho
It was that sensor and making sure it had gas🙂 yeah I would check if you have gas and your fuel pickups😉
