Everyday we wake up, we all change our verbal and non verbal communication (fashion in this conversation) to support the role we want to project depending on what social environment we are in. Actresses and actors get paid to do this as a career. I have the option to wear a more blue collar or more white collar version of my work uniform every day and because I interact with a very broad spectrum of people with different backgrounds in the world, I choose to wear the more blue collar version of my uniform to improve the perception of accessibility, connectedness, and the ability to relate to folks. I see the moments when certain folks, folks that tend to place a high value on luxury clothes, may not give my job role and my knowledge proper consideration because they judge how I am dressed, but that is their mistake and I will still out navigate them. I’m wondering why nobody is talking in length about weight fluctuation and how that play into fashion consumerism. Most women I know have had major weight changes throughout their lives and with that comes the need for a wardrobe over haul. And of course we could just hold onto all the different sized clothing to be able to meet the ebb and flow of our body’s. But with that comes the shame and reminder that those clothes don’t fit anymore. That reminder can only add to the relationship body dysmorphia plays in a majority of women’s lives. It’s especially difficult for women in the professional world where your work attire is under scrutiny of upper management. Or for women who have recently had children and feel pressured to get back to there pre pregnancy weight. I’m not saying this is the only reason fast fashion has infiltrated to the degree it has. It’s just a huge factor and would like to hear added to the conversation about sustainability and the vast reach of consumerism.
This is a good point, I do think there's some clothing that is designed with a changing body shape in mind. For example anything elastic or made to stretch. There's also lots of dresses and skirts that have ties at the waist to accommodate a changing shape. just gonna say that the disney college program is absolutely worth an entire episode of TFC (i did the college program and 2 other internships with them afterwards) - but will clarify that the college program at disneyland vs disney world are two *totally* different things!!
Sure sure... I think a past coworker of mine from a craft store went on to do the "Disney college" over the summer and they train you to be in character at the parks, even if you are just a janitor, even the Janitor's go through how to be in character on the show parts of the park because the entire park is a "show".
I have a few friends who did the Disney World one. One was a perfect character actor person and was living her best life. The other two liked it fine, but for them it was mostly just an interesting one-off summer job that they didn't regret but weren't sad when it was over.
Omg I really want to watch this. I know several people who have done DCP and it comes off a bit culty. I've seen some people who went in full Disney adults and come out hating Disney, and I've seen others never leave DisneyWorld.
This was so fun! Mina and Chelsea bouncing off each other was great. I want Mina to come back! I kinda got an Actor's Studio vibe, lol. "You buy fashion, you talk fashion, you support sustainability. Explain." Cards down. Lol!
Re the question about capsule wardrobes - Leena Norms did a video on building a capsule wardrobe with colour. She has lovely bright clothes and her own distinctive personal style. It's a fab demonstration of capsule wardrobe without being boring 😄
One video idea could be the finances of med school/grad school students, new doctors, etc. As a pre-med, the finances of these kind of education decisions, especially ones that require such massive loans, are not discussed openly nearly enough, and it would be really helpful to have a guest who knows about the finances of graduate level degrees!
for me, at least, the height of luxury isn't a specific brand. it's having something literally made specifically for you. even if someone else has the same dress, or shoes, they won't fit them the same because they aren't exactly the same. I wish I had the kind of money required to have a personal tailor. that's the absolute height of luxury for me.
I’m not sure if you’re talking about a personal designer or someone who can tailor clothes to your body, but the second one is very accessible!! I buy second hand, but because I have a small waist and larger thighs and hips, I often have to pay to have my pants and some dresses tailored. I typically spend $25 per pair of pants to have them professionally tailored by a local seamstress. It means I get better fitting clothes, and I’ve shopped second hand and small business all at the same time!
100%, I always say that if I was wealthy I would commission a variety of people to create garments for me, that way they would be unique and fit perfectly
If you have the time, learning how to sew is not that difficult tbh. And it opens up so many possibilities. I have sewn mostly new skirts, because I can never find good skirts in my style and size, so I often combine basic t-shirts etc with skirts with interesting prints. Plus, skirts are super easy. :D
I tried Shein for the first time last month and I’m sorry I did. It was 80% garbage. But as a 1x size woman, it’s becoming nearly impossible to find clothes that 1) look good, 2) are designed to fit women in double digits, 3) aren’t polyester or acrylic and 4) are made using non-exploitative labor practices. I would LOVE to pay decent money for decent clothing, but it seems like every year it’s harder than the last. How TF do we create a world free from fast fashion when fashion refuses to even acknowledge the average sized adult female body exists? 😡
Have you heard of TwoThirds? I'm don't know if their size range works for you, because I'm used to European sizes, but they have good quality clothes that are made in Europe from mostly natural fibres.
Yes! This! It's so hard to try and treat the earth right and do the right thing when the most affordable places that won't have you looking like you're wearing curtain are Shein. I can attest to the quality too. At Torrid, I can easily slip into a 2x, but at Shein, a pair of 3x LEGGINGS feels ungodly tight. I'll have to wear them out a bit, but still.
I guess one option is learn how to make simple clothes yourself? Or get someone to make them custom. Or, get styles like wrap skirts and dresses. Then it doesnt need to fit exactly right like a more structured piece would need?
@@Guguchina I can see that you’re coming from a place of problem solving and I appreciate that. I do know how to sew. I do own wrap dresses. But none of those are going to fix the systemic problems faced by people with bigger bodies when it comes to buying quality, sustainable clothing. Retailers need to stop producing crap made from polyester. And fat people deserve to have well made clothes that everyone can access.
This was so great, and it makes me think I would LOVE to see an adjacent topic with TH-camr Hannah Louise Poston on her relationship with beauty consumerism following the no-buy year she used as a hard reset on her spending habits and the years since that she's spent forging more moderated, sustainable spending habits with a beauty budget. Hannah + TFD would be my dream collab!
Majorly second this!!! Would be very interesting she’s been so open and so real and she’s got something to say that can help women start to heal the relationship to consumerism esp with beauty!!!
it's almost bizarre my two fav youtubers, whom I followed for a couple of years for VERY different reasons, sitting together and talking stuffs. LOVE LOVE LOVE Thank you so much! It's such a lovely gift for me!
I have actually brought dresses to a tailor in Istanbul to have them copied. I also get some of my shoes made there from existing models in the colors that I want. Fortunately it's very affordable (esp. since I live in Switzerland). One time I had leather jacket made here in Zurich and it's gorgeous but I will have to stay the same size for the rest of my life to get my money's worth :-)
I ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Mina! I’ve done the “faux rich” trick in luxury stores. I have a statement watch a few bags and accessories that allow me to fake it for better service. It shocked my BFF the first time she witnessed how different they treated me when I wore my swag 🤣 Tailoring is crucial. I tailor my $13 Target sale rack dresses. I launder them by hand or professionally and my fast fashion lasts for 10+ yrs. Thanks TFD for giving Mina another channel aka chance for people to discover her. I’m 50 and her content and yours are very beneficial even though I’m probably not your demographic.
my mom taught me how to sew which has been a lifesaver being a shorter person and having to hem everything since the beginning of my existence. But this past year i really got into sewing more and have found so much joy in altering my clothes to fit and drape perfectly. Plus, it's a lot like a puzzle. Figuring how to make adjustments to work around a 3D object (your body).
I do something similar, making a mannequin of your body (there are tutorials online) with duct tape and then stuffing it (I put a hanger in so it would hand while I work, then stuffed mine with old bubble wrap and packaging stuff. Perfect form of my body
Tailoring is still a thing in Western Africa and here in France, a lot of daughters of immigrants are really good at creating their own fashion clothes mixing the Western African colors and pattern with Western style of clothing. It's really quite amazing.
You should have Daria Andronescu on - she is an amazing capsule stylist and TH-camr, who values sustainability, using color and your own personal style. She's such a good fit for this audience! Love Mina Lee too 💕
LOVE LOVE that Mina is drawing attention to the problem of fast fashion and encouraging everyone toward sustainability, secondhand buying, and creative personal style.
I really like that only buying on Fridays idea. In addition to it being a break, you'll see just how many things get saved up for that day and cut back how many you actually go through with.
Could you add "podcast" or The Financial Confessions to the titles? Sometimes it's difficult to tell which vids are pods and which are "regular" videos quickly! Just a thought :) Or having the thumbnail be more podcast-y. I also notice I don't feel like clicking if I'm not sure if the pod was done remotely or live 🙈 too many zoom hours. Glad I clicked though!!! I love Chelsea and Mina
I'm pretty sure all of the financial confessions episodes are podcasts. You can also check Spotify/apple music to cross reference, but TFC episodes come out on Mondays and I'm pretty sure they said once that those are always podcast days. 😁
YES thank you for mentioning the union busting at Everlane, it grosses me out how fashion vloggers keep promoting them as "ethical." If that's how they treat their employees in the US do you think they really care about how the workers at the factories they contract with in Asia are treated...they really pioneered the vague "ethical" claims marketing strategy
I loved this video! I normally don't like summer dresses because of the current styles not being my type, but recently I bought a vintage summer/spring dress from the 80's that I adore! I can't wait for warmer weather to I can wear it to a picnic or just day to day. I am really lucky that the town I am living in for University has at least a dozen if not more thrift/vintage/antique malls. That makes buying second hand so much easier.
This was such a great interview that sparked sooo many suggestions in my head for future videos. Is the comments section the appropriate place? I don’t know but here’s a random one - hearing the words “financially solvent” made me realize I would LOVE a collab with Not Just Bikes about financially solvent cities.
with regards to the body trends and fashion, i'm liking the puffy oversized silhouettes coming more to the forefront as a counter movement to the body "ideal". Rejecting what should be "flattering" on your body feels like a rebellion when it's constantly policed for us as women. I'd rather be judged for the crazy piece i wore than the shape of my body as it naturally is. This isn't about hiding per say, since large pieces will take up more physical space which is often not allotted to us. I think this is seen in the sensation around the selkie puff dresses and other popular designers like SImone Rocha, Molly Goddard, Cecilie Bansen. They provide an extreme feminine silhouette that doesn't emphasize the female body which i enjoy a lot as I feel more and more confident to take up that space and accept that form of attention.
I'm a huge proponent of my semi capsule wardrobe. I have like 5 bottoms and 5 tops for my everyday office job that I rotate. They all match each other since they're some combination of green, beige, orange and brown. But i also have a few things for when I'm just at home or for going out that I don't incorporate into that core matching wardrobe.
I use the 3 day rule: I put something in my cart and leave it for 3 days. If I still want/need it, I buy it. Also, for me personally, having a subscription for Stitch Fix has helped me cut down on costs. I get a new box 4x a year (once every season) and there are at most, 5 items in that box. I pick items that I can wear across seasons and will complement what I already own.
I tend to window shop online, add them to cart and then log out and clear. If I remember that I still want it in a week or two, then I will buy. Googling stitch fix, never heard of them
i have been a tfd subscriber for how many years and i really enjoyed this content! First time of learning about the guest & after listening to her I have also subbed! She's so awesome!!!
My accountant is my HERO. I've had just a couple of crazy years in paperwork and not to mention my business so it's not only just a great thing to feel better about, but he's made some really great recommendations about how to re-invest in myself and my future. +1 on the hiring an accountant/tax preparer if you can afford it!
Loved this collab, best part of my day! Chelsea for your next fashion and finance discussions could you collab with youtuber Haute le Mode? He knows so much about big brand history and runway looks!
I've always wanted to develop my sewing skills better, but I never got around to it until the early pandemic. As a new mom, I had a really hard time replacing my pre-baby wardrobe with clothes that fit my personal style and my post-baby body. Tailoring suddenly felt like a necessity to get the clothes I wanted. Now with #2 on the way, I've been doing some maternity projects because of how frustratingly limited those options are. Tailoring is a skill I've fallen in love with, but it's definitely been a significant investment of time and money to learn.
Chelsea giving big boomer vibes 😅 love it! I do it all the time. Honestly I don't see the point of wearing something that is expensive but looks cheap. Is it like a secret handshake that only the wealthy can identify? Ew. Great to watch Mina as always!
If you need veneers, like I did for tetracycline staining, they are the way to go. I have had mine since 1991! They are not bright white as my bottom teeth are not. I had to get the front 6 done and back then they were $150 each. I dread the thought of needing to replace them.🙈
I only really last year/this year decided to really go in for not buying any fast fashion, I had been conscious of the problems before that, but because I was subscribed to e-mail lists/followed companies on instagram etc. it was just way too easy to be tempted, and especially bigger companies are so much cheaper, easier to find, to navigate, and to recieve packages from, everything is just easier about buying from them, in comparison to second hand or smaller businesses/single designers, and that all makes it really hard to step out of that cycle.
Just have to react to around 42:40, crowns are legit dental procedures for people whose teeth can't be fixed by fillers anymore. Basically if your tooth is plain broken, except for the base, then a crown will be what the dentist ppace there. And yes, a lot of other countries in Asia are cheaper than the states but the horror stories stated by Mina are greatly exxagerated. Just because crowns were done in Asia doesn't mean they were done by some shady incompetent doctors. NO. We have professional dentists who know what they are doing, especially in Turkey and Vietnam. Some western doctors even sudy in Asia because it's much cheaper and also because of the range of experience they can get from here. So please just don't with the fearmongering about dental procedures in Asia. You have quack doctors in America, do the same due diligence when you go to Asia and your whole trip plus all your dental procedures would be covered by the money that 1 crown would cost in the US.
Two of my fave TH-cam channels collide! Love this 👌 Small note on the Millennial x Gen Z cut off is that it's really hard to set a strict cut off point because if you're born at the end of a generation but raised with siblings of a similar age who are solidly in the one generation, you really wont be part of the next generation. I was born in 1992 so I am 100% a Millennial, my sisters were born in 1995 and 1997, and both also call themselves Millennials. My sister born in 1997 wouldn't be a Millennial according to the cut-ff year but in practice it just doesn't work that rigid. She's definitely a Millennial and so is Mina 👌
Exactly! I was born in 1996, my middle sister in 2001 and our younger sister in 2016. A lot of times me and my middle sister talk about what generation exactly are we and how our little sister is gonna have a lot of "old" references (but at same time she already has a lot of maneirisms of her generation) is really interesting to observe.
My partner works in the airline industry, and he did notice that people who dresses better gets treated better, not sure if the quality of clothes are judged by it as well, but the people they’ve dealt with gets treated better by the gate agents, FAs etc.
I love tailoring so much!!!!! I started continuing my journey with sewing (started with basic mending) and moving up while in the throws of the pandemic.
Every single time we spend money we are voting for something or giving our support to it. If you choose to shop with someone you know uses sweatshop labor, you’re supporting that system, and telling the company you’re okay with what they do. Unfortunately consumers are stuck in a position right now where it’s like “well what’s the lesser of the evils” but there is still a choice there. If we spend our money with intention to do better, we can make a difference, because we will be giving power to the people who can make the bigger changes. We can also make the choice to buy sustainably, whether that’s buying cloths second hand, or saving up to go shopping when you can afford to not shop at Shien. I’m not saying that I’m perfect at this and I have all the answers, and no one should ever buy fast fashion. What I am saying tho is we can make small changes in our shopping habits that can make bigger systemic changes.
Chelsea, you need to interview the people from Maintenance Phase Podcast. They would have some very intelligent smart things to say and are pretty funny.
For people worrying about needing to spend tons of money to look professional and/or expensive: Natural fibers tend to look better (less plasticcy), fabrics with weight to them tend to look more expensive (they drape rather than puff, they also wrinkle less which is another aspect), the clothing needs to fit, and the clothes need to be clean. Some of these are hard to achieve (clothing that fits), but this is it. It can be hard sometimes to sift through the polyester, but it does make a big difference. This isn't meant as some sort of elitist flex, I'm pretty poor and "looking professional" is not high on my list of priorities with the work I do, but I do work a lot with garments.
for me reformation are so timeless, these kinds of dresses are mainly inspired by vintage styles, one of my favourite summer dresses is thirsted and gives you the same feeling, I would buy reformation for an occasion like a wedding X
Hey TFD team, I'm big fan of your channel and especially of TFC. I'm also big fan and regular viewer of Mina's channel so I hope that this will not be seen as a personal criticism of her. However, I'm a bit disappointed that a lot of recent TFC episode are featuring popular influencers. Some of my favourite past episodes feature guests who an average TFD viewer might not easily come across (the episode with the divorce lawyer comes to mind). People who give interesting advice based on their professional expertise or individual experiences. I wish we'd see some more of that. It just brings new ideas into my mind in an entertaining format.
The body type thing really brings home how people going on about the horrors of corsetry in past centuries miss how we used to use clothing to create the ideal fashionable body shape, but now your actual *body* has to be that shape, and if it isn't, too bad for you. I'd posit that the corsets, padding, and petticoats were a better option and allowed more people to be fashionable and adapt to the changing styles.

I've seen some people who went in full Disney adults and come out hating Disney, and I've seen others never leave DisneyWorld.
omg Mina!!! she's such an icon. So glad she is in the podcast
This just gave me so much more inspiration and drive to keep making clothes for myself and my friends. Even if it's not couture or expensive
@@emmess6419 same! Because I’m so picky and I like unique items.
Get a seamstress! I have trouble finding clothes since I'm huge in my country and seamstress and shoemakers save my butt
Agree! This is not the first time I've seen this suggestion in the TFD comments either. It would be so insightful!
PLEASE
I'm also here for it! #HLP #POSTitsUNITE!!! 🥰💄👸👑
Let's make this collab happen!
Yes!! Second this!
it's almost bizarre my two fav youtubers, whom I followed for a couple of years for VERY different reasons, sitting together and talking stuffs. LOVE LOVE LOVE
Thank you so much!
I swear you recruit people to interview straight from my subscribed list. All my favourite creators!!
Mina is so fantastic! One of my favorite TH-cam channels.
Dang, Chelsea! You are interviewing all my favorite TH-camrs and I am loving it!! Thanks for providing us with high quality content as always ❤️❤️❤️
I didn’t initially realize this was even an FD video. I thought I was subscribed to Mina Le for like a day.
Omg. Mina Le on TFD. I have never clicked on a notification so fast…
Edit: also loving the Maryland energy in this video 🦀🦀🦀
my favorite cinametic universe is Chelsea collabing with commentary youtubers
I loved this video!
I normally don't like summer dresses because of the current styles not being my type, but recently I bought a vintage summer/spring dress from the 80's that I adore! I can't wait for warmer weather to I can wear it to a picnic or just day to day. I am really lucky that the town I am living in for University has at least a dozen if not more thrift/vintage/antique malls. That makes buying second hand so much easier.
had no clue tailors will make identical pieces of clothing for you. that is definitely a bit of knowledge i'm going to put to use.
This was such a great interview that sparked sooo many suggestions in my head for future videos. Is the comments section the appropriate place? I don’t know but here’s a random one - hearing the words “financially solvent” made me realize I would LOVE a collab with Not Just Bikes about financially solvent cities.
The collab I didn’t know I needed!! Love you both!!! 😍
I love Mina's videos and I'm so pleasantly surprised at how honest and vulnerable she was during this interview! The danger of nipslips is real!!! 😂
My capsule wardrobe includes a lot of cobalt blue because I LOVE it
with regards to the body trends and fashion, i'm liking the puffy oversized silhouettes coming more to the forefront as a counter movement to the body "ideal".
This is the crossover I didn’t know I needed. I feel so complete and so cared for haha
Yay!!! Two of my most-watched TH-camrs together in one interview. Brilliant!
Chelsea’s low key flex that her hubby is 6’4” and “The Handsome Man”. Yes!! 😍
Thanks for your comment on Stitch Fix. Been wondering.
I tend to window shop online, add them to cart and then log out and clear. If I remember that I still want it in a week or two, then I will buy. Googling stitch fix, never heard of them
Also, if u put things in your cart, on Etsy, u are often rewarded for waiting, since some sellers will send u coupons to incentivise u to buy.
i have been a tfd subscriber for how many years and i really enjoyed this content!
"you could have a different waist to butt to thigh ratio..." YES.
I've been binge watching Mina's videos lately so this came as an amazing surprise
Same! It was ..... what's the word .... SERENDIPITY!
Actually me too, I just encountered her video about Brigerton and dropped into a rabbit hole just a few days ago!
Chelsea, you either ALWAYS bring my fav TH-camrs here or discover amazing news ones for me
Best channel ever
This was such a huge surprise to me an amazing surprise it seriously made my day
Loved this collab, best part of my day! Chelsea for your next fashion and finance discussions could you collab with youtuber Haute le Mode? He knows so much about big brand history and runway looks!
Omggggg my TWO FAVORITE channels are collabing?!?!?! I’m so happy!
OHMYGOSH YESS I DIDNT KNOW I NEEDED THIS
This is such a smart and insightful interview!! Mina is a fascinating guest!
Tailoring is a skill I've fallen in love with, but it's definitely been a significant investment of time and money to learn.
omg two of my fav youtubers together WHAT!? thank you, this is the content we need!
I literally squealed. Loveee Mina!
Ask a Mortician, Philosophy Tube and now Mina Le? How did Chelsea get a hold of my TH-cam playlist?
As someone who loves color I am glad to hear someone talk about a capsule wardrobe not having to consisting of 100 shades of neutrals.
I dread the thought of needing to replace them.🙈
Yay Mina! Literally gasped seeing this in my recs
Ong thank you for talking about over priced, thousands of dollars on POLYESTER designer items and how it is such a scam to even sell that to us 🤢
Don't even get me started...i just looked at a high end brand that was selling a $400 button up polyester shirt
This is why I check the materials used for almost all clothing I buy
@@daylite34 Same here. I always look at the tag before I buy anything.
Two of my fave TH-cam channels collide! Love this 👌
Small note on the Millennial x Gen Z cut off is that it's really hard to set a strict cut off point because if you're born at the end of a generation but raised with siblings of a similar age who are solidly in the one generation, you really wont be part of the next generation.
There's also the term Zillennial.
Love Mina!
Living for this interview!!! Biggest fan of these two 💘
My partner works in the airline industry, and he did notice that people who dresses better gets treated better, not sure if the quality of clothes are judged by it as well, but the people they’ve dealt with gets treated better by the gate agents, FAs etc.
Wow, what a beautiful crossover! Mina Le is such a force in the fashion community!
YESSSSS LOVE THIS SO MUCH
Chelsea, you need to interview the people from Maintenance Phase Podcast. They would have some very intelligent smart things to say and are pretty funny.
look at her laugh OMG so cute
This is a perfect combo! I love Mina so much, really excited anout this episode!
I am living for these crossovers lately!
Dream collab! We love Mina 😍
Two of my fav TH-camrs. Thank you😊 for this.
THIS IS A FANTASTIC SURPRISE MASHUP
Two of the most amazing women on TH-cam.
The collab I never knew I needed!!!! Mina is the best
idk how I missed this when it aired but omgggg love her video💕 so glad you guys got together for this
I'm glad I've already seen the videos of Mina referenced in this. So nice to see this crossover.
My favourite crossover!!
I would love to see the guy from Not Just Bikes on TFC! The channel is all about public transit and good/bad urban planning
I thought this was Mina's latest video, and lo and behold, I ended up on an interview between 2 of the best !
Thank you Mina for sharing the 1996 camp 😅 Us 1996ers get thrown back and forth between Millennials and Gen Z since we're on the cusp
I love Mina so much and wow this is a crossover I never expected
I recently started watching Mina, and have watch Chelsea for a long time. I’m definitely gonna check out this app Mina recommended
omg this is so cool! i love both your channels
Love her!!! This was such a great conversation
