Solid video. I bought an R tonic a month or so ago and it is an interesting experience. I don't dislike it though, it feels much more organic than a slush box and I definitely don't mind the discount you get buying these over the gated manuals. Underrated transmission
Thanks! And congrats on the purchase!
1. Placing into neutral at a stop is not the only option. As long as you keep your brake peddle depressed, the clutch will not try to kiss in manual or auto mode. It's only when you lift off of the brake that the clutch anticipates imminent engagement and will change the kiss position. That's if the clutch is tuned/programmed correctly.
2. Always drive in manual mode. It will reduce clutch wear.
3. In urban use, always drive in manual mode with the Sport selection engaged.
Interesting! Agreed for 2 and 3. That’s the first time I heard about your first point but I could see that being the case. I’ll probably still continue to put mine in neutral at stops just to be safe 😁
That was very helpful, thanks!!
Glad to hear it! You’re welcome!
Good vid mate. I couldn’t get this information when purchasing a year back so I bought the gated. But the R tronic sounds like a goer. Enjoy
Thanks! How’s the gated treating you?
I bought this one before I learned stick shift. Otherwise, I also would have gone gated too. But yeah, the R Tronic is a blast and I haven’t been let down at all.
Most people that don’t know how to drive stick shift are the one that usually burn the clutch.
When driving the R Tronic, you must treat it like a manual transmission. Release gas peddle before shifting, put it on neutral at stop signs etc.
fyi: after a few seconds on a complete stop, with your foot off the gas peddle, it would automatically put itself into neutral.
Exactly!
I have one with the r tronic it is not terrible but it take to get used to if you treated it like a Manuel it is pretty jumpy in traffic though haha
Yeah there’s definitely a learning curve to them lol they hate slow speeds.
I test drove one of these and in "auto mode" it felt broken. I'm coming from a Porsche dual clutch PDK and the R8 lunged so heavily that both the salesperson and I figured the transmission was shot. If this is how it behaves, you may want to test drive this first. It's like you don't get the benefits of either a manual OR an automatic. Kinda weird.
lol I would agree, in Auto mode it feels extremely broken 😂 very funky experience!
luved the vid, but please raise your voice a bit, or put the mic closer lol.
Thanks! Will do.
I wonder how impactful is the shift? I’m in the market for a r tronic R8, I actually like the clunky race car feel, the harder the shift the better, I currently have a 2017 Nissan GTR and have the transmission tuned shift as hard as possible, but being not a built transmission and DCT its still not very hard, I’m hoping the r8 shift like gun shot😄
The r Tronic will for sure kick you, sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way imo. But yeah, sounds like you’d enjoy the r Tronic.
Do you have any experience with Porsches? I would love for a v8 R tronic to be my next step up once I get bored with my 981 pdk. I'm wondering how the running costs would compare. So far the Porsche has been super reliable and running costs are predictably kinda high but not terrible
I don’t have any experience with Porsche. Although I would love to get an older Cayenne at some point and make it more of an off roader 😁
There’s certainly a reason why Porsche’s sell extremely well - they’re insanely good cars so I think they’re difficult to beat. But if you’re looking for a change I think you’ll love the R8. The R8 probably won’t be as refined as the Porsche, you’ll likely also lose some storage space. From what I have heard, Porsche’s are quite a bit more reliable than Audi.
Just some food for thought 😎 either way, sounds like you’ve got great taste in cars.
Who did you use for a pre purchase inspection the dealer looking at a 2009 34k mi on it
I’d suggest a highly rated independent shop that focuses on German sports cars or take it to an Audi dealer to have them look it over. Thanks for subbing by the way! Hope you get that 2009 you’re looking at 😁
I don't pay much attention the the "auto journalist', especially their opinions about transmissions. Many of them feel it's a "purist" point of view, to shift your own gears, then the masses fall in line. The take rate at dealers tells you the truth though. .9% of cars are sold with manual transmissions. Less than 1%. So unless the journalists don't buy new cars....
R8 R-tronic and BMW SMG are awesome. All they do is push a clutch pedal for you!!! And they do it much faster.
Great point and agreed!
Bro you gotta talk louder, I maxed out my speakers and your super soft.
Thanks for the feedback! Will do.
Hi..How do you drive the R tronic in heavy traffic on flat roads and mountain hills roads..thanks
Hello! Typically in traffic I just make sure I give a ton of room between my car and the car in front of me and keep the car rolling which apparently helps the clutch stay healthy.
Plus it makes it a smoother experience overall no matter if it’s mountain roads or flat roads.
If you stop for longer than like… 7 seconds I would put it in neutral, again to save the clutch.
Hope this helps 😊
