We had Motorpool plt as part of H Co. and their Plt Sgt just played hand held games all day in his office. They got a new Plt Leader that started working on vehicles and was getting shit for it. Cool dude. Too bad he Armyed up.
The retention NCO is exactly what my army buddies said theirs was like. Glad I joined the Air Force, where I could separate without anyone telling me I'd be a POS on the outside. I got to find that out myself.
I served 6 years with my local National Guard Field Artillery Unit from 82-88. I joined 3 weeks after my 18th birthday. I was a senior in highschool. I really enjoyed my service, but decide to not reenlist. I had gotten married to my wife. She was in our local Army Reserve Unit. She quickly became pregnant and opted to end her enlistment. So I decide to not re-up and start my family. On my last drill, my Lietinaunt took me to a room upstairs in our armory. He sit me down, put a relist paper and pen by me. He said I couldn't get up and leave until I signed the paper. He then left, coming back in every now and then. After an hour or so he started making me all kinds of great offers if I would just sign the paper. I was tempted, but wouldn't break. He finally told me I could leave with a very unhappy face.

So awesome to see mail duty get shown in the S-1. I did mail duty while working in the S-1. Best. Job. Ever. After you do your morning PT and personal hygiene, you go to the Motor Pool, check out your Hummer, and go to the U.S. Post Office on the base. Get your mail and literally drive all around the base just delivering and picking up mail. As long as you get things done, never show that you're happy (there are haters), and never let anyone see you sham, it's one of the top, if not, best duties for E-4 and below.
"Getting to work with your friends is one of the best parts of being a soldier." "Friends" is a strong word, Sarge. I had co-workers, one who made me late for duty because his drunk ass wouldn't get out of bed and he was my ride, one who I'm pretty sure was a tweaker, and an E-5, who like this dude, was on his way out the door.
I'll never forget about the hardcore infantry Captain who was injured and can no longer deploy to austere environments so he gets gets assigned to admin staff while awaiting his MEB/PEB. We also had the LT who wasn't sure he wanted to be a LT any longer so he was assigned to the 3 shop to change his mind.
A "participant patch" doesnt mean shit dude. That's literally all it is, everyone gets one down range. Deploy to the Stan or the sandbox, never leave the base, head counting at the chow hall...you'll get a "combat" patch. It means nothing.
