    In Anatoliy Bondarchuks Transfer of Training books there's data on the relevance of various exercises including the use of over and underweight implements for progressing throwers at various stages of development (categorised by distance thrown)

    Check out a video of Joe Kovacs the 2019 world shot put champion squatting 395kg/870 pounds for 4 reps, some of those throwers are very strong.

    She is amazing. Would love to see you talk about George Frenn, and other strong throwers too. Frenn was one of the original Westside guys (not the Louie Simmons copy, that came later). He had powerlifting numbers in the early 70s that rivalled Paul Anderson's, but at more than 100 lbs lighter, and set records in the, then neglected, 56lbs weight throw.

    I can help with why the "special strength" at the end is essential/vital to any hammer thrower's success. Also, this is from my experience others, especially at this thrower's level could explain it 100% better than I. But in short (Basically it helps build a bigger engine specifically for hammer throwing). I wrote out the message below and realized it it could be summed up way too late in the process. If you're curious about hammer throw please keep reading.
    This moment is hands down the best for any hammer thrower to do outside of the ring or weight room from my personal experience of throwing 10+ years all the way to the D-1 collegiate level
    This unique strength movement is what we called "weighted winds" which makes the competition weight (4kg F / 7.26KG M) feel lighter to the entire body, thus giving the thrower the greater ability to feel their body and more importantly the connection with the implement.
    The training mentality for hammer throwers is you are a thrower first, and a weight lifter second. But the principles of how to train are very similar to each other. In training you very rarely train with competition weight, you're typically using weights 10%-30% above or below.
    The same idea of changing weights and rep counts during macro, meso, and micro cycles to build sport-specific strength. You can also change the length of the wire you're going to help with certain elements of technique.
    When you throw a weight that is 15%-30% heavier than the competition weight, you're at an RPE 9-10. This occurs while hoping you don't fall over slamming into the ground with all that momentum. This tool allows the RPE for competition weight to go down at a greater rate. You don't have many years to train hammer, especially at the senior-level standards that all D-1 athletes after the age of 19 must compete under. The faster you can reduce the RPE to a more manageable effort the easier it is to focus on technique and pushing the distances based on technical theory. Basically, it helps build a bigger engine.... (this is where I realized I could sum it up without wasting your time).
    On the flip side while much lighter you tend to blow through positions that generate force, so they are used to train technique. ideologically can be compared to Westsides dynamic movement day kinda sorta.
    Heavy winds also weirdly prepares for the pressure and pain you feel while generating force throughout the throw, but that is subjective.
    Also, because i saw a comment on the box squats,the idea stems from we are never below parallel in hammer throwing, so what would we ever train there. This is the mentality for all training methodologies within hammer throwing.

    Just adding this for context: Jüri Tamm was an Estonian male hammer thrower, 2x Olympic medalist and briefly held the world record, one of the all time greats in the sport. His best lifts, supposedly, were:
    290kg back squat
    330kg deadlift (in an interview he himself considered this to be his best lift)
    165kg bench press (he said that it had little to do with hammer throwing, which makes sense, probably more applicable for shot/discus throwers)
    130kg or so close grip snatch
    He was stronger than his contemporary Yuri Sedikh (still holds the world record) who threw further than him, so one doesn't have to be as strong as this, but gives you some context for what elite hammer throwers may be able to lift.

    I got to meet her at the world championships in Oregon! Wonderfully nice person but the one thing that really surprised me is how small she is given her strength levels. Per my best guess she seems to be maybe 5'5" to 5'7", but she is tremendously powerful.

    I feel the special exercise isn’t done at the same intensity with the mental connection to the actual performance that it can just help build stability as she’s moving through a compromised position, like you say it’s more of a counter rotational movement than a force producing movement

    • @jamiesonomeire9487
      @jamiesonomeire9487 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it was initially a long rod with a metal ball attached (highland games still use something similar) but was turned into a wire for "moder" purposes.

    • @sikastrength
      @sikastrength  ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically it gives you a chance to move faster by having something to push off of. If you didn't have it you'd have a harder time changing direction as fast and sometimes you want to move as fast as possible.
