3. Why there is not a Crow video game using todays technology is a real mystery. I mean it could play like Batman Arkham Asylum. The IP is rife with possibilities.
4. Much like this game, the movies would get pretty terrible as well. By the time the 4th one was released, it was a mere shadow of its original greatness. The TV show sucked as well.
5. I have never defeated this game. I have played it numerous times but honestly can only stomach about about 10 minutes at a time. Despite the password system, it's just not something I willingly want to play for any length of time.
The Crow: Invincible, regenerative, weapons and bullets do no harm, cannot die.
Game Devs: "Let's just ignore all that."
The developers weren't watching The Crow they were watching Sting.🤣

I personally thought they were great. But the 90s were great on both sides. Heenan and Schiavone WCW and Lawler and JR WWF

It's a damn shame that today's gamers haven't learned that lesson and keep paying EA, Activision, and Ubisoft their hard earned money for shit they should have flushed ages ago, e.g. microtransactions, pay to win, season passes, etc. FOMO is new peer pressure -- paying for it only gives you an extremely limited "payoff" that 95% of the time has no lasting value.
Ubisoft is such a piece of shit company. I genuinely believe they despise the people who play their games.
Unfortunately, we rarely saw the developer’s name on the box back in the day. 😞
Kinda sucks cause there are some good developers who you'd like to support. I really like Respawn but it sucks they are published by EA, was interesting that EA let them release their last game as singleplayer only and no microtransactions.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu I mean I can hope that EA is finally learning, I remember when everyone loved EA. They fixed Star Wars Battlefront II and it has no more microtransactions. The latest Need For Speed has no microtransactions. They allowed Respawn to release a single player only game with no microtransactions. Personally I think Activision is way worse than EA, at least right now.

Same. I remember renting it with a friend from a video store...we stayed up TRYING to play it...it was just...horrible.
I think we played "time commando" at the same time - much better.
@John-Paul Hunt That's a totally ignorant statement. If people are losing interest in console gaming why is it still nearly impossible to find a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S as we approach the one year mark of their release? PC/mobile gaming will NEVER overtake console gaming.
The Crow Soundtrack may be the best movie soundtrack ever.

I was driving and listened to Dead Souls yesterday. One of the few times I like the cover more than the original. Also, the original Crow was my favorite movie for years.

Dude, I feel you. I LOVED The Crow. I was a goth musician because of it. I wore my Crow t-shirt to the premier of the 2nd movie. I owned the soundtracks on cassette and CD. I loved Sega. The Saturn was the first new console I ever owned. Saved up and bought it with my own money along with VF2. I was hype, it was a match made in heaven. Sega and The Crow?!?! There are no words for how much this let me down.
The Crow has always been my favorite comic the films were good and im still waiting on the full version of city of angels that will never come and finding out this game exists and that it's one of the worst games of all time truly hurts, that being said another good review and I always look forward to what you do we all appreciate it

Its funny you said they should have made a Die Hard Arcade clone because I was thinking the exact same thing. The movie is basically just a beat em' up, that's all the game needed to be.
LJN was owned by Acclaim from 1990 until it shut down in 95. So there you go.

Man, the saturn is one of the coolest consoles there ever was. Always a shame to remember the bad games on that console... it had so much potential.

This was the first game that i bought for my og ps1 back in the day.. played 5 min turned it off and went back to the store (blockbuster) to trade it for a different one. Just a terrible game.
I remember playing the demo at my cousins house on Playstation. I really wanted to like the game because I was also a Crow fan. Back then I thought it was cool but after recently trying it again it just doesn't work. I can get over the controls and graphics but it's just frustratingly hard and unfair. Not fun to play at all.

Had no idea Gray Matter made this game but it all makes sense now. I had mowed a bunch of yards back in '96 so I could buy a few PS1 games and one of the brand new games I bought was called Perfect Weapon. It looked so cool on the back and in this magazine ad I had so I thought it was a winner. Didn't take long for me to realize it was a piece of trash and City of Angels was basically a re-skin of Perfect Weapon.
Oooooh I was just thinking of that PlayStation game Perfect Weapon! I remember renting and playing that game during my freshman year in high school and it was so hard that I never got past the 2nd level. I remember each levels were on different moons. I never understood the story.

Yes, the controls made this game a bastard to play. A while back I watched a 4K play through of the game on PC just to see the finale. I can't imagine suffering through that now in 2021 LOL. I made it to like level 4 and had to stop watching. I will say that Gray Matter does make good music for like 5 seconds then they loop it to hell and back.
I was looking through a list of Sega Saturn games, and thought this looked interesting, but thought to check some reviews first. Between yours and AVGN's review, I chose yours because I knew you would get straight to the point, and you did. You saved me the trouble of wasting my time downloading this.

I’m surprised no one has made an actually good Crow game based on the first film. Like you, I was a massive Crow fan as a teen, but the sequels all left me cold.
City of Angels was okay. That third one was traaaash.
It might have been bad; but there's something I always loved about the animations of the fight moves

Sega Lord I BOUGHT THIS AND BATTLE MONSTERS IN THE SAME DAY. i said they both cant be as bad a gamepro reviewed them. I was 11 and my mom and me went to Toys r Us and i asked if i could get a few games and she said yes. maybe id be happier if she said no
Cool video, are you going to do a video on the upcoming Saturn homebrew "Hellslave" by XL2, or do you still need to take a look at his work. The guy could use some much needed advertisment and attention, you should totally make a video on him and his project, as it is exceptionally good. I am much looking forward to this homebrew.

Sadly, he stopped the Sonic Z-treme project to work on the "Hellslave" game project. Perhaps he will return to the sonic Ztreme game after completing the other.

Could you imagine a crow anthology game in the Arkham engine? just no Edward furlong or Kristen dunst
I was just thinking that the game may have been to ambitious for the tech of its time. A more advanced 3d engine, dual analog control scheme.
The Arkham engine, God of War, DMC, Ninja Gaiden etc... could have done this license justice...
So many superheroes would be fantastic in the Arkham style. Daredevil, Wolverine, Punisher, Ghost Rider, Watchmen, etc.
i like how the crow flips up like a ninja when he gets knocked down. did he even do that in the movie?

I noticed some samples straight out of Fighting Force. When you get hit, he grunts like the big dude (Smasher?).
I have never played The Crow City of Angels, but usually movie / game adoptations are just bad.
The same vice versa.
i found one positive. the animations themselves suck, BUT atleast its smooth. thats about it

The background environments look like prerendered images. Which explains the lack of camera movement
I played this with the cheats on and got some form of entertainment from it, it's not the worst 'bad game' I've ever played but I did switch it off when I got to a part where it required the player to navigate across several chandeliers, I lost all my lives there and switched it off.
This was what I always called the Sega Saturn's Mortal Kombat Special Forces. Just jarring controls, dark murky graphics, and music that you would pay for a option to turn off. 😅I enjoy playing the first two levels of this once a year though.
love to see more reviews of bad games! So unfortunate during that time, Sega of America was rejecting 2D games left and right, while blessing these types of 3D abomination of games to be released
I think the backgrounds look fine. How are they too dark? I've never played this game or seen The Crow but it seems like they fit.
I had this for the Saturn, I made it as far as stage 2, couldn't go very far for those same reasons, when the enemies get guns more frequently, you're fucked.
Didn't realize back then, but the soundtrack (Or at least the 1st stage) sounds really inspired by Nine Inch Nails, most likely by The Downward Spiral album, but boy they did not have the talent to pull off something remotely close as good as that album.

I was obsessed with The Crow during high school and even though I knew this game had received bad reviews at the time I was so desperate to play a game based on the films I had to buy it for my Sega Saturn. Boy were the reviewers right on this one. It was so bad I turned it off within minutes of playing and took it back.

Gray Matter has had a steady history of shoddy releases. The only games that I know of that were any good was B.O.B. and The Terminator (SNES version). These games aren’t masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination, but they were playable and had appeal.
It's kind of similar to Perfect Weapon. I don't think it's as bad, but those tank controls are impossible.
I remember that the widow of Brandon Lee declared that this game was a disgrace to his legacy. "A damn disgrace," she said (source needed).

Even though this game has always been ravaged by reviewers, I still want to play it at some point. I'm a Crow fan and glutton for punishment I guess.
I remember renting this atrocity with some friends back in the day and thinking it was God awful back then! LOL! There was this stigma with the CD based systems of the 90’s that everything had to be 3D polygons with pre rendered backgrounds to make it “cool.”
Coming hot off the classic days of 8-Bit and 16-bit in the 1980’s and early 90’s those CD based duds (from 1994 to about 1999) were truly bad when developed by less than experienced game producers.
Part of me can enjoy them like a sleazy B-movie but THE CROW : CITY OF ANGELS is hard to even appreciate from that perspective.

Not counting Atari's E.T. because we all know that's an awful one but my top 3 worst games of all time are this, Superman 64 & Spawn the Eternal.

Very few early 3D games from this era are looked back on fondly.
I mean sure we've got Tekken and we've got some other ones but most weren't great and thanks to the now very aged graphics and
gameplay/mechanics or what have you aren't even really worth playing today most of the time. But then you add a company like acclaim who was absolutely notorious for almost continuous crap with very few diamonds sprinkled in there (more like rubies or sapphires and emeralds really if I'm honest at best)

I think it was more deeply deeply disappointing and rushed then truly broken and unplayable. That said it's not a good game per se it's held up about as well as any game from that era and I absolutely refuse to go back and play anything from the Atari era or before. (And I mean that for console not arcades those were great)

Loved the soundtrack to The Crow. This game was really bad. This game should have been much better, very sad.
I still have my PlayStation one copy that I bought for just a few dollars. I’m actually glad that I kept it only for the sole purpose that it has become somewhat valuable because it’s rare. But it is a flaming hunk of shit! Did they really need to put 3d fighting with a vengeance on the front and on the back? I love this video because it’s exactly how I feel about it LOL in for a while I thought it was just me.

As a big fan of the first movie, I played this game on PC. Man, the control was pain in the ass. Such a huge letdown.
Back in 1997 I knew this game was trash when I bought it, but I tried really really hard to like it anyway.
Why noone sees it is EXACTLY same with Alone in the Dark original trilogy??? But AitD games had fantastic story and were super cool to play on the other hand.
Ash looks and moves like Michael Myers, lol. For some reason I always thought the music in this game was awesome. It reminds me of the never released 32x game of the X-Men.
