Hello, my baby is now 46 days old, I have tried all possible ways to breastfeed that were taught to me at the hospital and followed the instructions from La Leche League and still cannot get my baby to open wide enough for a good latch. My nipples are lipstick shaped and burning after each feeding. I understand these natural techniques are for newborn babies but is it possible to teach my baby to learn the correct way to latch even though she’s already learned incorrectly? I’m afraid the training wheels won’t work once she’s learned how to ride the bike even if it’s the wrong way.
Hello Michelle. Allowing your baby to do the latching (rather than you taking charge) should make a difference. One other tip that might help is to try these positions with your baby's bare chest against your bare skin. Skin-to-skin contact seems to help trigger a baby's instinctive feeding behaviors even more effectively than if you're lightly dressed. Best of luck!
