Frollo is one of the most psychologically complex villains Disney has ever put on screen (I mean, he obviously wasn't their creation originally, but it was a bold choice to put him in a kid's film).

@@hashtagcritical8688 It wasn't a bold choice actually. By making him so atrociously and obviously evil he becomes less relatable and people cannot sympathize with him. This turns him into a character people are naturally against and so leads the audience. He was made like this so people wouldn't believe Disney promotes the whole being evil is cool thing.
I personally prefer the Frolo from the musical or the book. A villain has to have a humane side and a conscience to be believable in order to make the point in the story where he shifts and succumbs to his desire more impactful.

I actually got CHILLS when I realized it was time for Hellfire while watching the play. Normally when I watch the movie, I’m basically counting down until Hellfire happens because it’s the best part of the movie. But with the play, I was so invested from start to finish that I wasn’t thinking about how close we were to Hellfire until Heaven’s Light ended. Then I was just like “oh my god... it’s time.” And Patrick Page knocked it out of the park; he knocked the whole ROLE out of the park!

  • @cas2914
    @cas2914 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1491

While I think the orchestration in the film is better (the trumpets and tympani are more prominent), I think the execution of this song on stage (for those of you who saw it with Patrick Page) was better. There was no fireplace or a hallucination of Esmeralda. It was simply Frollo on stage, dressed in his priestly vestments, red lighting, and a choir (which was absolutely top notch). The thing that made the execution better, in my opinion, was that Frollo induced a psychosis in himself. The song started out with him praying and (gradually) you could see that he felt tormented with his lust, which then evolved into pure rage. On the final note of the song, he spreads his arms out like he was on a cross, making it seem like he's a victim of his lust. It was genuinely creepy. I watched Patrick Page at Papermill and I remember getting goosebumps at how well he displayed the pscyhosis without the need of special effects.

    • @tcrpgfan
      @tcrpgfan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +69

He did that in the animated version, too. Only they clearly show Frollo was on something. Plus... arms outstretched? Really? The animated version not only did that, but it had also cast a shadow that increased in height. It's a representation of not only his victimization, but of how he thought himself as above others.

I saw this at La Jolla Playhouse and this scene completely floored the whole audience. I swear, there must've been about two whole minutes of nonstop, thunderous applause once it was done. You're absolutely right: Patrick's performance was so brilliant it didn't need anything except the red lighting. It seemed like we were watching a man having a genuine religious-induced psychiatric breakdown onstage and it was terrifying and exhilarating all at once.

I went to watch the musical at a theatre in Finland, where I live, and it was different. Please tell me if anyone else has experienced the same as me:
Frollo walked into the cathedral, nuns walking by both of his sides.
He kneeled and took off his shirt, facing the audience. Somewhere on the first chorus, he started whipping himself, as if punishing himself for what he had sinned. At some point, he kneels low onto the ground and you can clearly see the scars that he made for himself.
The whole song was a masterpiece and I was taken away by it. I really want to see the cast again.

What is interesting is Frollo's voice actor from the animated version wasn't really a singer and it is obvious by the way this song is set up (Mostly speaking with emphasis) but he managed to knock it so far out of the park that it is considered the best song in the entire movie and one of the best Disney ever made. So it is interesting to see a singer struggle with the song because it REALLY wasn't made for him, but do amazingly in the parts that actually required singing alone.

I've heard an analysis which says that the contrast between this song and Heaven's Light illustrates that Frollo's whole personality, and particularly his pride and extremely possessive attitude towards Esmaralda, could be seen as painting him as an enemy to God, whereas Quasimodo's humility and his desire for Esmaralda's freedom and happiness (even if it means she gets someone else) could be seen to paint him as almost angelic in contrast.

This is one of my favorite songs in the world. It describes the "wife of one's youth" spoken about in the Bible; "don't abandon the wife of your youth". In the spiritual sense, this is the preschool magic fairy we all dream of, before girls are socialized to aspire to be "princesses" and boys to be "mechanical". The magic fairy is the Divine Spark of the Holy Spirit, it's the magical being that is as tiny enough to live in a secret miniature garden and converse with the richness of life in a tiny spot the size of your hands, the oasis of your most innocent imaginative creative heart. By the time we arrive in kindergarten and venture onto the 7 year old age of conscience, she is either sublimated into the creative spirit of the child who dramatically acts out the impulses of the fairy; or the child is forced to "man up" or "mind her looks", and the Divine Spark is stuffed down into the dark depths of the soul, the unconscious. In the hearts of boys and girls, She is portrayed in the innocence of Aphrodite Nudata emerging from the foamy crests of water upon the shore; she is the aesthetic beauty of nature as the creation of God, Imago Dei, She is the pure Beauty of a flower. She is portrayed as Lenore from Poe's the Raven, he abandoned the magic fairy, the Holy Spirit, the Wife of his youth, and because he ignored her until he was too old to follow his true love of art and beauty and the Good, Beautiful, and True, he ignored her and is left in shameful regret. She is Charis (greek), Grace, She the Holy One of Israel (Bk. Revelations), she is the lady stuffed in the basket in the book of Isaiah. She's the drowned mermaid or the burn witch. She is known in Scriptures as "the Grace of God" (Gracia Dei); just like the Father in Heaven is Maiestas Dei; His Majesty is effulged by the Splendor of His Glory (greek Lamprotesis; Athlethes Logos). In Victor Hugo's novel, he depicts how the Catholic Church turns the mind against itself; how it injects Lucifer and hellfire by sexualizing innocence yet hypocritically standing in justice. Hellfire depicts the innocent little girl Charis sexualized before her time, forced by society to feel unjust shame and carry a burden she cannot possibly understand, because Charis, the Grace of God, does not understand her body nor the concept of sexual perversion. Hugo's Follo depicts in this song how he is set up to serve two masters: the self-righteous proud murderous depravity of Jesuit brainwashing, versus the Holy Spirit, the Grace of God who begets the Mercy of the Father, through His Majestic lovingkindness and eternal Glory. Note that Frollo depicts the brainwashed programming that "God watches you defile yourself through masturbation and you'll go blind" or "God forsakes you for being a 12 year old temptress who sexually entices priest", a mind control method of controlling sexuality to control money. The ending "God have Mercy on her" is the key phrase that links Esmerelda to Charis/Grace of God through the Holy Spirit, and the defiling of the holy through the Church's improper sexualization of the innocent. This is Victor Hugo depicting how Frollo's church educattion and training forced him to burn his inner Charis, the fairy of his innermost, the Holy Spirit, through the Jesuit brainwashing "it's not my fault if in God's plan he made the devil so much stronger than a man"; he is burning in anguish because he perceives Satan's dominion over the innocence of his own soul (his love/lust for Esmerelda) and his only option is to choke the flower or burn down the house. Quasimodo is an equal character; the Jesuit indoctrination imposed on Frollo turned his inner innocent child, Frollo as Puer Aeternus, into the half-formed abandoned "creature", that is, Frollo's atrophied and bitterly scornful authentic inner child, deaf to his own authenticity. Frollo/Quasimodo is Saturn, Kronos who eats his own child portrayed in the Goya painting... Frollo is the composite of Emerelda and Quasimodo, half-formed, improperly sexualized, deaf and demonically lobotomized, which ultimately leads him to self-emolate... he denies Christ!! That's WHY the song is dedicated to Beata Maria, the Mother of God beatified, made clean or Holy after lamentations. She's lamenting because Frollo is killed by Quasimodo as his admonished daemon soul; the abandonment of his beaten and broken Holy Guardian Angel, who the Jesuits mutilated (half-formed) and replaced with fear of "the devil" and Frollo's claim of Jesuit-Luciferic supremacy over Grace/Charis/Christ through the contemptuous scapegoatting of his weakness in the line "it's not my fault if in God's plan", attempting to hide behind pride. This is why Michael the Archangel is invoke; Esmerelda is "quoth the raven, nevermore" thus depicts an apocalyptic battle (see Joel 9).
Victor Hugo writes about the inner struggle of the clergymen who were systematically brainwashed to kill off the curiosity/discernment of the natural budding Divine Spark within all human souls (symbolized by the Rose of the Holy Spirit posing upon the Cross of Christ). The inner fairy in us all, Esmerelda, the Good, Beautiful, and True. This song talks about how the Jesuits destroys his conscious, corrupts him with dark fire by being forced to relinquish the Holy Spirit in favor of the Jesuit hierarchy. The mergence of Christ and Holy Spirit (Rosy Cross) and aeternal innocence is mutilated by corrupting the innocense of the once-innocent-and-free-Frollo-child, with the Snare of Lucifer and Thorns of Hellfire (he ascended quickly thru the ranks).
Esoterically, Victor Hugo depicts the spiritual drama of the internal hellfire when forced to serve two masters (Luciferic pride and lust, with Satanic murder). Frollo fantasizes about murdering the "wife of one's youth". In a social commentary sense, believe Victor Hugo is depicting the struggle between the Rosicrucian Order of the Christians who promoted authentic Christ experience, the Knights Templar, against the Jesuit Order of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, the Crusades and the Inquisition. This song is like a really pretty romantic version of the Name of the Rose by Humberto Eco.
IT IS SO DEEP. I could probably write an entire article on this one song alone lol. But who would read it, lol? I'm happy to share the insight with someone who actually PERSONIFIED the part. Sing the song but with the lyrics in this light; the song means something completely different, it's almost like the failed life of a snap-rage alcoholic.

In the background, the choir is chanting the "Mea Culpa". This is Latin for "my fault". It is a payer in the Catholic mass, during which the faithful that they are sinful, but by God's grace they are saved. In this song, Frollo refuses to except his shortcomings, and because of that, they consume him. In he makes himself his own god in this moment.
They also sing "Kyrie Eleison". This means "Lord have mercy", it is sung several times throughout the show to underscore that all of the characters are seeking help from above.
The tragic irony is that if Frollo recanted, he could have been a great man helping both Esmeralda and Quasimodo. Instead he decided to seize everything for himself, and lost everything in the process.

But I am sure the staging and lighting for this scene in particular would still slap so hard on stage. For the final part, I can totally picture the choir closing in behind him in a semi-circle, the spirits of the saints and martyrs getting ever more threatening to his terrible morals and authority.

I love that the chorus part of this song (and that melody in general) was the literal first thing we hear at the very beginning. (Aside from the prologue/latin version of Someday) The entire theme of Notre Dame (both the cathedral and the story) IS the chorus of Hellfire! The entire score was building up to this moment.
The music was forshadowing Frollo's descent into madness (and the tragedy that it brings) from the very begining, and it repeats all thoughout the movie/play! IT'S INSANE! The emotional weight of this leitmotiv is brilliant!
THE CHOICE FROLLO MAKES IN THIS ONE SONG IS BUILT UP FROM THE START AND IT'S THE SINGLE THING THAT RUINS THE LIVES OF EVERYONE IN THIS STORY, including Frollo himself.
Every 'Kirye Eleison' in the story was the Chorus (the saints/God) asking FROLLO to have marcy, and he refuses it more and more as the story goes on.
And by the end, when it's him who asks for mercy... the Saints (or God, or Maria) give him one last chance to repent, admit his guilt, have mercy, be a man instead of a monster... but makes his choice, damning himself, and everyone else.
    This is so good, yall.

      @nostalgia_web ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well, the chorus is actually singing the prayer that you say right before Catholic communion. It’s the whole church confessing to their sins so they can be pure enough to consume Jesus. I just thought that that was interesting and you can probably connect that in your own way.

    Hellfire Lyrics:
    [PRIESTS, CHOIR MEN]
    Confiteor Deo
    Omnipotenti
    Beatae Mariae
    Semper Virgini
    Beato Michaeli archangelo
    Sanctis apostolis
    Omnibus sanctis
    [FROLLO]
    Beata Maria
You know I am a righteous man
Of my virtue I am justly proud
    [PRIESTS, CHOIR MEN]
    Et tibi Pater
    [FROLLO]
    Beata Maria
You know I'm so much purer than
The common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd
    [PRIESTS, CHOIR MEN]
    Quia peccavi nimis
    [FROLLO]
    Then tell me, Maria
Why I see her dancing there?
Why her smold'ring eyes still scorch my soul?
    [PRIESTS, CHOIR MEN]
    Cogitatione
    [FROLLO]
I feel her, I see her
The sun caught in her raven hair
Is blazing in me out of all control
    [PRIESTS, CHOIR MEN]
    Verbo et opere
    [FROLLO]
    Like fire
    Hellfire
    This fire in my skin
    This burning
    Desire
    Is turning me to sin!
    [FROLLO, PRIESTS, CHOIR MEN]
It's not my fault! Mea culpa
I'm not to blame! Mea culpa
    It is the gypsy girl
The witch who sent this flame! Mea maxima culpa
It's not my fault! Mea culpa
If in God's plan Mea culpa
He made the devil so much stronger than a man Mea maxima culpa
    [FROLLO]
    Protect me, Maria
Don't let this siren cast her spell
    Don't let her fire sear
    My flesh and bone!
    Destroy Esmeralda
And let her taste the fires of hell
Or else let her be mine
    And mine alone
    [FROLLO & PRIESTS, CHOIR]
    Hellfire Hellfire
    Dark fire Dark fire
    Now gypsy, it's your turn
Choose me or Choose me or
    Your pyre Your pyre
Be mine or you will burn!
    Kyrie Eleison
    God have mercy on her...
    Kyrie Eleison
    God have mercy on me...
    Kyrie Eleison
    But she will be mine
    Or she will burn!

We got the programs and, of course cause his songs are BEAUTIFUL, we immediately looked to see who was playing Frollo. We were quite disappointed because the guy who was playing him (sorry!) didn’t really “look the part” to us. After he finished this song, my friend and I, in unison, turned to each other and said “we were so wrong”. So sorry my dude for expecting less of you. You killed Hellfire!

I was hoping they would extend the song for the live performance. It still feels like a 7 minute track compressed to a radio friendly length.

Patrick's Singing though is just as powerful as the rest of the cast bcoz this song is glorious (as damning as it is)

    👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I like this!!!!!
I noticed that there was a part in the song when Frollo his voice trailed off a little.
    1:17-1:19
It was too much, the passion she felt for Esmeralda in both her the soul and her the heart.
    🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
    🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
(In Frollo was very strong, the flaming passion. It made Frollo even more dangerous.)
It was a experience,!!!!!!!!!! Thank you much!!!!!!!!!!
    Regards! Red Rose
