i played quasi two years ago, and this was one of the best notes to hit when i did it. great show to watch, listen to, and play in. menken did a phenomenal job with this one.
And if this show HAD gone to Broadway; I think they would probably do this song for the Tony Awards cause literally everyone is in it! !!! I'm so disappointed that its not there :(
The only reason it isn't on Broadway is cause the asshole Broadway heads don't want to have to pay every single person that that it requires to make this musical.... 150 people are needed for the singing ALONE that's not counting stage crew and the orchestral people. It makes no sense because they might spend a shit load of money on it yes cause this is a HUGE production but it would make so much more money than it would cost to spend it. The reason this music is so powerful is because of numbers. You get 150 powerful singers all together singing different harmonies ALONG with a large gorgeous live orchestra????? It's breathtaking. And people will pay top dollar to see that. This is how my own upcoming musical "Fairview's Tavern" will work.
I love how Esmeralda has a whole dramatic storyline that she is virtually absent from. This shows the power and impact her character has on that of the others. They all want her for different reasons, but yet they want her for the same reasons as well. It’s such great storytelling.
I know this comment is two years old but I thought you might find this interesting. The original title of the book is actually “Notre-Dame de Paris” and then the opera of the book, written by the original author, was called “La Esmeralda.” Esmeralda is the more central character to the plot and everything kind of happens around her. It’s not until the English translation in 1833 that the book became more known by its English title of “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.”
I much prefer this version: *Phoebus:* With all due respect, sir, I was not trained to murder the innocent. *Frollo:* But you were trained to _follow orders._
@No Name I just had to come back and say thank you for sharing this link. That YTP series has been my obsession for like the past month and I've been showing it to/sharing it with my friends. haha
This is the scariest song in this musical for me because of its optimistic tone. When we are shown villains, we are shown their viewpoint from the perspective of other characters, but in this song, we are shown Frollo and his soldiers singing cheerfully about murdering someone who we know is innocent. This cheerful tone makes it clear to the audience how evil Frollo's rhetoric is. I remember hearing that the most evil villains in media are usually the ones who think they are the heroes. Frollo absolutely fits that description.
Absolutely true! The only moment when we're shown the true horror of Frollo's actions is at the very end with the chorus repeating Hellfire. Only then we finally see that the city is burning and Frollo is now fully insane and can't be stopped. It's terrifying.
I always love characters like this. Granted, from knowing what Claude Frollo is like and what his goals are makes me hate him, but if I didn't know any better, I might get swept up in the hunt too. That makes it so terrifying to think about. I just love how the musical hit that perfect balance between condemning his actions and showing how people blindly support him because they don't care to look any deeper than what he tells them.
I'm playing as Frederic soon, and I sing this song, and it's not talking about murdering, it's talking about arresting, how do we know this? It's not officially decided until Frollo is slapped after the "for pity's sake LOVE ME" line. When they catch her, I escort them off, and "Arrest the gypsy and the traitor."
@@CreepDestroyer While it is true that Frollo is currently just trying to arrest Esmeralda, deep down he wants her dead if she doesn’t have any affection for him. Either way, this song comes from the point of view of somebody who is completely insane and pursuing a malicious goal.
I'm speechless. When Phoebus and quasi and Frollo all sing " OH Esmerelda" I feel an overwhelming feeling of joy and it moves me. I watched the full play on TH-cam... I liked it better that's the movie, and it gave me more of a similar feeling to the book..which is a lot of mixed feelings......
While the recording isn't the best, I still enjoy it even so. There's on a few mess-ups, and you know it was recorded in 2016 when regular non-film-making cameras weren't the best. And I agree, i enjoy it more than the original movie than any other day.
This version of Hunchback, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast... if the setting is in France and the actors have American and British accents then you know it's gonna be a good musical.
I love when Frollo, Phoebus, and Quasi all sing “And still it all comes down to her and me” because though they’re all so different and all of their situations are so different, they all believe the same thing - that it is only them struggling with Esmeralda at that moment.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! You are so lucky!!! I'd been saying for YEARS that they should make it a stage show- and when they finally did I didn't get to see it. :( And I just feel like since Disney is doing all of these live-action remakes of the old classics that they could TOTALLY do Hunchback justice. Especially after seeing what they did with Cinderella and how Beauty and the Beast trailer looks. Plus Hunchback has this new amazing score- it would be perfect!
Yeah! Some of the movies they're bringing to live action seem like cash grabs, like there's not much they could do to differentiate the original from a live action film, but they're remaking it to introduce it to new generations. Why not just re-release the original animated movies in theaters for free? Like, do we REALLY need "The Lion King" in live action when the oriignal is such a gorgeous masterpiece? So, yeah, I'm not too crazy about how many classics they're re-filming as live action, but I do think some warrant it. Especially "Mulan" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". And as for "Hunchback", imagine if they were able to shoot it in Notre Dame itself. How amazing would that be? I hope, if they do it as a film, they cast the original cast memebers instead of roping in big Hollywood names who can't sing.
If they actually filmed it in Notre Dame I would freak out!! No I totally get what you mean. For example, the Jungle Book remake just seemed really odd to me- not to mention that they already made a live-action version in the 90s that was WAY better. Ugh. I just want it to be a movie already!

I want a live action remake but at the same time, I’m frightened they’ll ruin it. Also, Alan Rickman would have been my ultimate Frollo and I’m not sure anyone can live up to my expectations
I was eight years old when the original Disney film came out, and it introduced me to the Victor Hugo story as a whole. As someone who was a tomboy during her childhood and who never liked the trope of a woman just sitting around waiting for a man to save her, needless to say, Esmeralda was my girl growing up. And when I was fortunate enough to see this show live at La Jolla Playhouse as an adult, Esmeralda's character arc, and this song especially, took me back to the same love and role-model-admiration I'd felt for her as a little girl. It was simply indescribable, the experience of seeing it enacted out live before you. Rock on, Esmeralda. No matter how hard they try, they won't be able to hunt you down, beautiful, free, flaming spirit that you are. Blessed be, dearest sister. )O(
I don't usually comment on TH-cam videos but from the 4 minute mark it's the best & then the build up of voices from about 4:40 onwards is utterly beautiful... the single voice breaking in at 4:46 is stunning! 😍 I could listen to that on repeat. I love the Disney film but I just wish they'd included this song in it!! ❤❤❤❤❤🎶
I would like to think that this song shows how Esmeralda affected the lives of many people. Like how Cosette did the same thing to Valjean, Fantine, the Thenardiers (the whole family), and Marius. I don't think she changed Javert's life since they've never met. But from what i read on quora she did, just indirectly.
True! This song is kind of like the Hunchback's version of One Day More! Just like a Place of Mirracles is like the trio of Eponine, Cosette and Marius in A Heart Full of Love... and Esmeralda's Someday is like a more hopeful version of I Had a Dream! I REALLY think that was inttentional. Since both Hunchback and Les Mis are Victor Hugo's works, it's a brilliant idea to draw similarities between them, as if they both happenned in the same universe.
I love how frollo thinks he’s assuring quasi ( when he says, don’t worry my boy, we will find her, and capture her!) and making him feel better and he’s like terrified for her 😂
Pure awesomeness. That's the best way to describe this song. Started off good, picked up in momentum and towards the end it's like you're suddenly hit by a wall of sound that's just spinechilling.
All I need to say is that I listen to the entire musical a lot and I'm proud that I've started to pull Quasi's notes pretty well. In the beginning my voice would crack a lot, but I've found out when and how to take a breath before it starts and I pull the note without a crack. I'm breathless after, but I still continue. Quasi's actor is the best I swear, since the man is actually deaf and can only lip read and do sign language. Yet he's one of my favorite one-time actors, since I've only seen him here ever.
While there was a production where a deaf actor played Quasimodo, the Papermill Playhouse production (the production/cast on the cast recording) had Quasi played by Michael Arden, who is not actually deaf.
I wish DISNEY could make this show into a film but not the movie, because I personally like the show better than he movie but that’s just my opinion :)
Agree that Disney should animate a song from the musical, but would probably say that On Top Of The World should be animated, as that fits more with the pace and themes of the film.
Saaame!!! I know that the key switches form minor to major in the opening number, but something about the switch from major to minor here just hits me so much harder and feels so much more powerful!!!
My high school just did this show for the summer musical. I'm in the tech/crew portion of our shows, and it was an amazing experience. Being able to build these sets and work the backstage is definitely the highlight of my summer.
@ 1:31 Is it just me or does anyone else get chills when Clopin sings "With the Might of Noootre Daaaame" There's a certain flare with the way he sings that line that I think no one is crediting him Granted it's short but I think it's worth mentioning
4:50 - 5:00 OH MY GODDD MY EARS ARE BLESSED IM CRYING CAN THAT JUST BE THE ENTIRE MUSICAL ONLY THAT (lmao jk I love the entire musical but still that was :') )
Your Wish is Granted, Disney announced that they're making a live action movie of the Hunchback of Notre Dame based more from the book than the original movie, and decided to use the songs of this musical along with the original cast
I love when the chorus changes to “hunt down the gypsy and the soldier.” I like imagining the chorus slowly becomes a long list of people Frollo has a grudge against “hunt down the gypsy, and the soldier, and the baker, and the blacksmith, and the farmer, and that one guy that looked at me funny”

aboisvert She's good in the movie, book Esmeralda is very frustrating
I genuinely think that this is one of the best act closers in like musical theatre history and no one can change my mind lol, it's just so GRAND
5:09
That change from the Esmaralda part to the Notre Dame score gives me goosebumps
I can only think of the image of a blood red Paris, ingulged in flames and black smoke, from the movie... It's chilling.
@@wandanemer2630 I think of the police injustice in the world
Two gold pieces for the one who leads us to the 35 dislikers
6 gold pieces for the one who leads us to the 48 dislikers!
36 golden pieces for the person who dared to dislike this masterpiece
-Till at last they where told of a brothel where they sometimes hid dislikers from harm...-
Frollo’s voice is so magnificent, even though he is a horrible person
True.
That’s why you can be grateful you can compliment the singer, not the character
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS end act one with a super dramatic song including the whole cast like this and Defying Gravity and Non-Stop and One Day More
歌詞
Esmeralda
By royal edict, warrant of arrest:
The gypsy known as Esmeralda
Being under suspicion of sorcery, witchcraft
And the arts of Hell
Anyone found harboring or helping her
Will be charged as well
Frollo: Hunt down the gypsy Esmeralda
And vanish in the night
Don′t let her flee
And vanish in the night
These are the flames of Esmeralda
While she is free
Your torches will burn bright...
Phoebus & Soldiers: Hunt down the gypsy Esmeralda
Don't let her flee
And vanish in the night
These are the flames of Esmeralda
While she is free
Our torches will burn bright...
Frollo: Have no fear, my boy... We will find her and capture her!
The wicked shall not go unpunish-ed
The heart of the wicked is of little worth
The wicked shall not go unpunish-ed...
Congregant: All through the city, at more fevered pitch
Than the bells of Notre Dame...
Phoebus: Two gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmeralda.
Congregant: Frollo′s men sought Esmeralda, the witch
With the might of Notre Dame...
Phoebus: Four gold pieces for the one who leads us to Esmeralda.
Congregants: Till at last, they were told of a brothel
Where they sometimes hid gypsies from harm...
But the madam, that whore
Denied it and swore by the Saints
The Saints of Notre Dame...
Soldiers: We're looking for La Esmeralda.
Madam: Never heard of her.
Frollo: If you want your house to remain standing, give us the gypsy girl.
Madam: I know nothing of gypsy girls.
Frollo: Very well. We'll set fire to it. Burn it. Did you hear me, Captain?
Phoebus: And he held the torch
That crackled like the gypsy′s voice...
Frollo: Are you disobeying a direct order?
Phoebus: And he knew this was the moment
He must make a choice...
Frollo: I knew it. She′s bewitched you, too. You would throw away a promising career? Captain? Carry out the order!
God help the outcasts
They look to you still
God help the outcasts
Or nobody will
Phoebus: God help the outcasts
Or nobody will!
Frollo': Coward! Traitor! Gypsy′s pawn!
You're relieved of your patrol
Phoebus: Consider it my highest honor.
Frollo: Kyrie Eleison
God have mercy on your soul!
Arrest Captain Phoebus.
Esmeralda: No!
Frollo: You see?! There she is!
Good people of Paris
I′ve heard the calling of the Lord
The time has come to take our city back
We'll save our Paris
Expunge this heathen Gypsy Horde
Before we′re overrun, we must attack!
Frollo, Soldiers & Congregation:
Hunt down the gypsy and the soldier
Don't let them flee
And vanish in the night
We'll find the gypsy and the soldier
While they are free
Our torches will burn bright
Quasimodo: Fire! Fire! Smoke and flame!
Esmeralda, where are you?
In this dark, I call your name
Is that all that I can do?
Phoebus: What have I done for Esmeralda?
Why do I hear her words inside my head?
And still I think of Esmeralda
With my career and body left for dead
Quasimodo: Out there somewhere she is lost...
Phoebus & Frollo: Somewhere she is lost...
Quasimodo: Esmeralda!
Quasimodo, Frollo, Phoebus, Soldiers & Congregation: Where is the girl called Esmeralda?
The flames grow tall
And sharp as fleurs-de-lis
Misericordia
Quasimodo, Frollo, Phoebus, Soldiers & Congregation: All Paris burns for Esmeralda
And still it all
Comes down to her and me
Et dona nobis pacem
Frollo: The devil dwells in Esmeralda
Quasimodo & Phoebus: Oh Esmeralda, Oh Esmeralda
Frollo′: Resist his charm...
Quasimodo & Congregation: Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
Frollo & Soldiers: Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: These are the flames of Esmeralda
Dona nobis pacem
Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: The night is singing
Dona nobis pacem
Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Of Esmeralda
Dona nobis pacem
Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Even the bells
Sing the bells
Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Of
Sing the bells of
Frollo, Clopin & Congregation: Notre Dame!
Of Notre Dame!
You’re a hero ❤
The flames grow tall
and sharp as fleurs-de-lis! All Paris burns for Esmeralda
and still it all
comes down to her and me!
Feels very awkward after April 15th.
Amen
"I've heard the calling of the Lord"
Idfk why but that line is my favorite....just the way he says it
OKAY BUT THE RANDOM LATIN CHORUS CHIMING IN AT THE END.
THIS IS JUST AN EAR ORGASM....
The Latin throughout the musical is SOO cool!!!
I want a live action remake but at the same time, I’m frightened they’ll ruin it. Also, Alan Rickman would have been my ultimate Frollo and I’m not sure anyone can live up to my expectations
Chloe Richardson yes...you are perfecly right. Rickman would be perfect
Too bad, But he's dead, so sad 😢
Maybe Jeremy Irons. He was pretty good at acting like a pervert in Lolita and has a very nice deep voice
You have to say, though, that Patrick Paige does a pretty dang good job
@@raesmith2164 ooh yes he could do it!
One of the most underrated Disney musical adaptations... smh
2023 and this song is really something.
Best. Sequence. Ever.
Hands down
I wish there was a love button
Oh I'm so incredibly jealous of anyone who had the privilege of seeing the original cast perform this live! I could cry! 😭😍
I'M PREFORMING IN IT FOR OUT SCHOOL PLAY!!!
the way the voices melt together at the end... it's so perfect
I had no idea that this existed until today and I am *sobbing* at how beautiful and complex and layered this track is. Good GOD get this on a stage!!
for some reason this is my favorite number. This entire musical is just pure gold it makes me cry,
Playong Pheobus in this show has been an honor, and this is one of my favorite songs to sing in this show
0:31 "Hunt down the gypsy Esmeralda" is my choice of jaunty ditty to sing when hunting down and burning a witch
near the end is absolutely from heaven
Blessed be, dearest sister. )O(
Their voices are GLORIOUS.
The power of that last note shocks me every time
"Wake up the city and sound the alaaaaaarrrmmm!" Chills every time.
This song proves to me why choosing Frozen instead of Hunchback for Broadway is unfair :/
How have I not known that this existed?!?! It's amazing!!!!
My school got the privilege to do this musical and it's so AMAZING SINGING THIS SONG
id kill to be able to do this musical
Me too! I got the opportunity to be in this musical and it was one of the funnest musicals ever!
My school is doing it this year
My auditions are Saturday
My school's doing the musical this april, im so hyped, if only i got quasi but apparently the guy that got him was part of 2 broadway shows so rip me
Ngl, this is my favorite part. Love the ensemble! 0:48
That's Michael Arden, Quasimodo in this production. Absolutely killing it on this album. :)
4:43 CHILLS!!!
Patrick Page as Claude Frollo!!!! Incredibly brilliant casting!! Though I will always love Tony Jay, Patrick did VERY WELL
People: "what's your sexuality?"
Me: "when Michael Arden sings 'wake up the city and sound the alaaaaaarm'"
Everytime!
*chefs kiss*
It´s rather how Valjean changed life of Fantine, Thenardiers, Marius and Javert... but I mostly agree.
WAKE UP THE CITY AND SOUND THE ALAAAAAAAAAAAAAARM
I love how frollo thinks he’s assuring quasi ( when he says, don’t worry my boy, we will find her, and capture her!) and making him feel better and he’s like terrified for her 😂
"The time has come to take our city back!" This is Frollo's 'Make America Great Again'.
And then he burned it to the ground.
Wanda Nemer still sound about right
One person dislikes this. Don't they know that this is one of the best songs in the show.
Kelly Hutchison thats frollo
Maria Anindya Ok! That makes so much more sense!
Its Frollo; because Frollo cannot find Esmeralda; and he's ticked off about it xD
I'm freakign crying this is the most beautiful musical and I'm so ma d that it's not on broadway this deserves awards
That light Hellfire reprise is the middle is an amazing touch
Pure awesomeness. That's the best way to describe this song. Started off good, picked up in momentum and towards the end it's like you're suddenly hit by a wall of sound that's just spinechilling.
I can listen to this everyday and I still get chills at the end EVERY. TIME!!
The best begins after 3:11, and it's an epic ride.
One can only dream that Disney could reanimate the movie like Lion King and Beauty with a modified version of this song
Yes! Please make that a thing Disney, Hunchback of Norte dame has an extensive fandom, just look on TH-cam
I wish DISNEY could make this show into a film but not the movie, because I personally like the show better than he movie but that’s just my opinion :)
Agree that Disney should animate a song from the musical, but would probably say that On Top Of The World should be animated, as that fits more with the pace and themes of the film.
Love the morphing end from major key to the minor key of the main Bells theme. Breathtaking.
SO BEAUTIFUL
Chills!!! This is such a great song. I wish it had been in the Disney version.
The Cinema Cynic they would not have included the brothel
I can't get enough of this song.
Esmeralda: Oh they're out for me? Time to girlboss then.(I love her so much😭)
2:50...Gave me chills, it’s my favorite part as well..
Frollo: "The wicked shall not go unpunished"
Meanwhile the wicked: "NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED"
I saw the show and when they BELTED out the last 8 count I started to cry....THIS IS AMAZING
@ 1:31
Is it just me or does anyone else get chills when Clopin sings "With the Might of Noootre Daaaame"
There's a certain flare with the way he sings that line that I think no one is crediting him
Granted it's short but I think it's worth mentioning
Was able to see a performance of this. This was easily one of the best non-Disney songs of the show.
The cast recording video on TikTok brought me here. AMAZING. Same energy.
Oh they did
This deserves fame!!!
4:50 - 5:00 OH MY GODDD MY EARS ARE BLESSED IM CRYING CAN THAT JUST BE THE ENTIRE MUSICAL ONLY THAT (lmao jk I love the entire musical but still that was :') )
Epic!!! I love it so much!!
OMG, I've been looking for this some time now
4:16 ... :3
Thanks!
How did no one notice this 🤣
4:50 the sheer power in this harmony
I first thought he sang "wake up to see the sun in your eyes" instead of "Wake up the city sound the alarm"
I don't care how but I want them to put this song in the live-action remake that Disney is doing!
I don't think they would have the brothel in it... Disney
@@ShinythingsI83
Simple fixs
Change from Borthel to Borden house.
Your Wish is Granted, Disney announced that they're making a live action movie of the Hunchback of Notre Dame based more from the book than the original movie, and decided to use the songs of this musical along with the original cast
2:37 the perfect moment.
I CAN’T STOP LISTENING
WHY DO I LIKE THIS SONG SO MUCH
Cause it's beautiful
