How powerful is the 45-70 Government Lever Action Rifle Cartridge?

  • The 45-70 Government cartridge, commonly chambered in lever action rifles such as the Marlin 1895, is extremely versatile in that factory loads are available in multiple different “power levels” from original 1800’s era buffalo loads that roughly approximate a very powerful 44 Magnum load all the way up to loads that many people would be comfortable taking on a dangerous game hunt.
This short video discusses and compares common 45-70 loads to other common cartridges so as to draw an easily understood comparison between various power levels amongst rifle cartridges.

45-70’s one of the greats out there…one of very few rounds that successfully made the transition from black powder to smokeless, and as he said, you can get loads that go from mild to wild. One of the best brush buster’s out there. Guides in Alaska and Canada carry lever guns with 18 inch barrels packed full of the hotter flavor, cause when you’re down on your luck, in thick brush, and a big bear decides it doesn’t care for you, there’s not much out there that’s as compact, handles as well, and pushes the kind of energy that a 430 grain +P hard cast from Buffalo bore or underwood goin 1950 FPS out of an 18 inch barrel, with 4 more readily available.

Against a rhino I wouldn't trust it, I'd definitely want something punchier, but it'll ABSOLUTELY drop a charging grizzly in its tracks. Even without the firsthhand accounts and seeing its effectiveness personally you can find reliable testimony speaking to its reliability vs pretty much all the big game you'll be find in North America.

Problem with 500 grain bullets is length of them you get ones that fit lever guns you give up powder capacity which for most part is not a big deal but most people now buying 45-70 are buying them for bragging rights or because seen it in a move.

For those who reload you can push the .45-70 to within 100 foot pounds of muzzle energy of a .458 Win mag. I recommend a Lee hand loader kit. The cases are straight walled and easy to resize . If you go with a high power loading only do so in a suitable action such as a Ruger #3 or a Marlin model 95.

@@bullgravy6906 Maybe a newer 1886 replica but I wouldn't trust an older one designed for black powder. I think Browning made a high quality '86 replica. From what I have heard the three strongest actions for the 45-70 are the '95 Marlin, the Ruger #3 or if you can find one the Siamese Mauser. Or probably any modern falling block like a replica Sharps. I mean for high pressure hand loading anyway.

I hardly use my 45/70s anymore since I inherited my great grandfather's Winchester 1886s in 45/90, /50/110 & .405. I'm kind of partial to the 45/90 for deer hunting and the 50/110 does a number on hogs and black bear. Haven't shot anything with the .405 but paper yet. I can get some pretty high numbers with the 45/90 even with moderate to medium loads I can push a 327 grain rn hardcast at around 2200fps and about 3400flbs of energy, give or take. I haven't pushed it to it's full potential but it can get way up there with the right loads.

Ever since I was 9 years old, I’ve wanted one. Spent every summer from 7-16 with my grandfather in ultra rural Montana. Closest neighbor was about a 30 minute drive away. We came back from fishing on the river one day, walking back to the truck when we were surprised/ we surprised a grizzly sow with her babies. It charged us and he dropped that thing with one round to the face and that was that. Ever since I saw that megafauna slumped over on the foot path, smoking hole in it’s head, I knew I had to have one for when I lived in MT. Now I’m older and I’ve got one, but I’ve learned how to not be an idiot and put myself in that position to begin with. Still toss it in the truck every time I go somewhere though.
