  • The classic banjo pickin' scene from the movie Deliverance.
Deliverance is a 1972 drama film produced and directed by John Boorman. Principal cast members include Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty in his film debut. The film is based on a 1970 novel of the same name by American author James Dickey. The screenplay was written by Dickey and an uncredited Boorman.
In 2008, Deliverance was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Billy Redden plays "Dueling Banjos" opposite Ronny Cox, who joins him on guitar. Redden plays "Lonnie", a mentally retarded, inbred, but extremely gifted banjo player. The song went to #2 for four weeks on the U.S. pop chart in 1973 and topped the adult contemporary chart for two weeks the same year. It also led to a successful lawsuit by the song's composer, since it was used in the film without his permission.
"Duelling Banjos" was arranged and performed for the movie by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell and was included on the soundtrack album. The song had been composed in 1955 by Arthur Smith as a banjo instrumental he called "Feudin' Banjos". Smith recorded it, playing a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo player Don Reno. When he was not acknowledged as the composer by the filmmakers, Smith sued. He eventually won, receiving songwriting credit as well as royalties. Two young musicians, Ron Brentano and Mike Russo, had originally been signed to play their adaptation for the movie, but instead it was performed by the others.

What a scene. Virtually no dialogue or action yet this scene tells you everything you need to know just with acting. The ending of the scene says it all as the man thought he had become a sort of “friend/ally” with the young boy, but that wasn’t the case as the boy refuses to even shake hands. That there was a sign that nobody back in those woods should be trusted, even if they look and act friendly.

Maybe this is why. This was from the actor Billy Redden’s (banjo boy) wiki page.
He portrayed a banjo-playing "local" in the film's famous "dueling banjos" scene. Boorman felt that Redden's skinny frame, large head, and almond-shaped eyes made him the natural choice to play the part of an "inbred from the back woods." Because Redden could not play the banjo, he wore a special shirt that allowed a real banjo player to hide behind him. The scene was then shot with carefully chosen camera angles to conceal the player, whose arms were slipped around Redden's waist to play the tune.[2] The hidden banjo player was shown playing in the bar-fingered "clawhammer" style, while the banjo heard on the soundtrack was played in three-finger "Earl Scruggs" style, using finger picks.

While it's not really duelling bajoes since only the kid plays it (Ronnie Cox plays guitar), it is an iconic scene and it totally comes out of the blue.
The kid at the end turning his head and refusing to acknowledge Cox's character is showing that the rural folks of the deep south look with suspicion folks coming from the big cities in the north and don't let this moment of levity tell you otherwise.
But that musical moment shows that, at least for an instant, music is truly a language that unites all human beings.

What's great is that Burt Reynolds was a southerner. OK, north Florida, but enough to understand what was going on in reality. And he's the one who throws in enough facial cues to let you know later that he understands what's going on. He's just cocky enough to believe he's above these people's attitude and games.

Beneath the beautiful banjo playing and connection between two people through music, a dark sense of foreboding is evident. Bits of the dialogue, certain characters’ faces, the woman in the window reveal this; it’s such a great scene that I love so much.

@Mark rapacki I agree. The movie is about how the more ‘advanced’ modern people don’t understand or respect the connection that the rural folk have to their home. The banjo kid is tricking the guitar guy into thinking he is simple , then the kid blows the guitarist away. The men are going down the river because it is soon going to be ‘tamed’ in the name of progress. It is an environmental activist picture , albeit over the top in a 70’s way( the rape analogy) ,

As a southern mountain boy this hits home so well. Reminds me of growing up walking down these back roads or a holler as we call them and hearing people sitting on the front porch playing music just enjoying life one day at a time. Despite what takes place in this film, I can assure we're nothing like that. The Irish and Scottish settled in these mountains where I'm from. Best way I can sum mountain folk or hillbillies or Hill Williams as I've heard it called before is we're just hard working lower class people.

Oh they’ll be very clear about it if you try to gussy up to them that you somehow share the same shoes, but if you’re yourself they’re warm and inviting. This movie is so hilariously biased that to think someone would take it as a geography lesson is pretty amazing. Goebbels did a similar thing.
