Absolutely mind-boggling that a person can be killed on a train in the middle of the day, and still no idea who the killer was.
Horrific, as was the r*pe of a young woman in a toilet on a train, never found the B'std. (Also UK).

It’s also outrageous that the woman sat glued to her seat and did nothing for 2 minutes while hearing the screaming.
Back then, the UK wasn't a full-blown surveillance state yet. People still had some privacy.

I'm sorry but you hear a woman screaming for 2 minutes and you sit there and do nothing? I get the woman was scared but she could have pulled the emergency stop without coming to any harm.

Completely unacceptable. Shame on people like that, don't live in society if you can't even muster up the courage to pull a string. All too common, complete inaction by bystanders. People are lazy, shy, get in their little shells, 'don't want to get involved', 'someone else will do it'. Drop in sexism and victim blaming & situations like this will continue. We need to do better.
Not only was she extremely young, you have to keep in mind she was also likely facing a language barrier, as well as possible cultural differences.
I've visited France and in my short time there I witnessed no less than three arguments in public that devolved into screaming fights.

Infuriating, a woman sat there listening to that poor girls last fight for life and her only concern was for herself, as if the murderer would have known it was her, sickening
Possibly even more infuriating is that the au pair prob just cbf doing anything, people get in their shells and don't want to come out. It's like shyness & 'don't get involved-ed-ness' all correlate to horrific inaction when women are assaulted, raped and murdered right next door. Same thing happened with the Claremont serial killer (Bradley Robert Edwards). He'd lured Jane Rimmer in 1996 to scrubland at the back of some houses, a wife & hubby heard her death curdling screams - and one was abruptly cut off mid-scream (he'd cut his victims throats) but they did nothing, saying 'prolly a bad domestic'. Oh, and a few weeks later they smelt something terrible, so they put up the windows and ignored it ('must be a roo')! What an indictment on humanity.
We need to do better as a society and not think of the 'inconvenience' or discomfort of speaking up (and not make sexist, victim-blaming excuses) but the regret and loss of self-worth if we don't act.
I was stalked home (I live in Perth) from uni by a Chinese student in 2009, bus full of people, I yelled 'STOP FOLLOWING ME!', no one cared, one lady smiled at me (she knew what was happening but did nothing). Bus driver even got mad at me cause I got off & back on again to try and evade the stalker. It's frightening being a woman.
Ah yes I'm sure this woman does not have an unbearable amount of guilt after this event

What a world we live in where such a thing as a “Rape Whistle” is required 😡 I have something similar..A personal alarm that you press and it makes a deafening sound.
I vaguely remember this and lived not too far away. Those old single train carriages were so unsafe, you are effectively trapped in them with whoever until the train stops at a station.
If I heard someone screaming I would’ve done something about it. One of my coworkers was chocking and I heard the other workers screaming help. I ran into the room and gave the chocking woman the hiemlich manoeuvre and dislodged the food item.
@@kathleenmaclachlan1541 Yes. She still remembers it. My company celebrated my heroism with a plaque from head office and luncheon. I was so embarrassed. Wasn’t expecting anything like that.
How horrifying!! Too bad that other lady didn't pull that cord to notify personnel. Hope they capture that POS someday soon!!!!

Part of me wants to call that woman a coward for not investigating the screams. But here's the thing - I've never been in that situation. It's really easy for me to say "Yeah, I'm built different. I would be the hero and save the day." But I've never been there, and math says that a lot of us would freeze just like she did. The Kitty Genovese effect is kinda made up and kinda not (it's a long story) but what isn't made up is the fact that people rushing in and saving the day is rare enough to be notable and that says that most of us wouldn't do it.
She was also very young and there was also likely a language barrier considering she was French.
You’re the only compassionate person I’ve seen in these comments. People love to announce how good of a person they are because they would have done something in a hypothetical situation, but ignore the fact that they are actively being bad people right now by judging and blaming someone who they’ve never met and don’t know the full story of. They’re more concerned about hypothetical situations and don’t seem to realize that the internet is real life
What a terrible tragedy for her family !! Imagine losing a well beloved daughter just before a son's wedding . The person who destroyed this innocent young woman's life , might have escaped the reaches of the law but he won't escape the judgement of God !!

Rarely I deeply affected by these stories, idk if it’s due to your excellent story telling or the shocking and brutal way he killed her, but this moved me to tears. Poor Debby, I’m sorry this happened to you, and my condolences go out to her loved ones.
What a bizarre place to make an attack, but nobody tried to help.

Growing-up in that area of South London, it seemed like women were frequently assaulted in train carriages. I don’t know if it’s still an issue with closed carriages.
A few years ago, when the Labour Party was led by Jeremy Corbin, I remember discussion of implementing “Women Only” train carriages because of the rates of assaults on trains.

She had an uncanny likeness to Claire Tiltman. It's possible her killer was injured for life too.
There is absolutely no reason for this case to be unsolved.
Somehow it is still unsolved after 35 years.

I'd heard of this case a while back and was just thinking about it when this story turned up in my recommendations. This is one of the most disturbing and upsetting cases in true crime. I pray they can solve this via genetic genealogy or someone talks.

That style of carriage, where compartments only have doors to the outside, are called "non-corridor stock/ carriages". All have now been withdrawn from service on regular train routes. Some preservation railways still have some non-corridor stock because of its historic appearance.
This is so close to where I live. it's scary. That poor woman.
Someone from Your hood might have seen the killer, or even killed Debbie.
When you get onto a train you think the most likely scenario to end up dead is dying in a train crash you certainly wouldn't imagine being murdered on one especially in broad daylight and certainly not when there's most likely going to be other passengers in the vicinity who will surely notice something but thats what happened to this woman it seems
How disgustingly ironic, that a young woman calls at the "Sherlock Holmes Hotel" in hopes of landing a job there . . . and then becomes the center of a mystery herself. (And how sad that we can't summon him out of the darkness to solve it: he and Watson would have been all over this case when it happened on their doorstep, with Lestrade combing the streets . . . and all three of them probably VERY pissed off.)
As for the case itself, what confuses me is that she had a "rape whistle," but no one heard it being used: only screaming. Why?
And yes, the killer definitely had done this before: with a prepared weapon, his targeting of the least-safe carriage, and his quick & efficient escape despite being wounded, he was sadly no amateur.

Someone above said that the 'rape whistle' models available at the time weren't particularly loud, and I can imagine between train carriages it was possibly even harder to hear?
Also the suspicion of the killer having done something like this before makes me hope he's actually been locked up for another crime this whole time tbh.
The level of violence used is unusual, i presume hes been looked at but Robert Napper was eventually convicted of extremely violent attacks on women, as this was.
I also thought of David Mulcahy, accomplice of John Duffy (known together firstly as the Railway R*pists, then as the Railway Killers). Their hunting ground was around railways stations as far south as Surrey and as far north as Brookmans Park. They used a knife to subdue/control victims prior to assaulting them. Duffy had been caught and convicted the year before Debbie's murder, so I wonder if it could have been Mulcahy acting alone and lashing out when Debbie resisted? But I'm sure their DNA samples will have been compared.
Ive always considered Robert napper. But surely they would've eliminated him from the 600 probable suspects they supposedly tested via DNA samples. I'm also wondering. Napper become more violent as he became incompetent sexually. In the book by Alan Jackaman . He stated he wasn't penetrating his victims. This usually a sign of frustration, and a reason became a sadistic killer later rather than earlier. Napper would be my suspect for Jean Bradley and Claire tiltman regardless of Colin Smith's arrest.

I was at college in Orpington at this time and remember it well. I went on the bus but my friend went by train.
It freaked her out. Those carriages were terrifying. Although in rush hour they were packed. I really do think about her often. Rest in Peace Debbie.

The modern ones are super deafening. The one I had way back then, wasn't that loud really. On a busy city street I think it'd get barely a 2nd look, as would a whistle .
It wasn’t an alarm, it was a whistle. She would have had to manually pull it out and blow on it. Sounds like she screamed instead because she couldn’t access it.
It’s ironic Debbie Linsley was safety conscious, yet killed mid-day on a train. May she Rest In Peace.

Debbie's train compartment had a window that wouldn't stay down and would raise upwards. Do you remember that?
My sister was assaulted in the middle of a busy shopping mall by a man with scissors who cut off her long hair and ran away. Nobody identified him. This was in 1978.
It seems plenty of people gave police clues and descriptions of a possible suspect. The man limping from the train and the one washing himself in the men's loo. The perpetrator would have been covered in blood though. Hard to disguise that. That's so odd that no one saw that.
Truly heart breaking. The family need justice, it is long over due.
Unfortunately, I think there's a strong chance that the killer may be dead.
The fact that there were so many people present before, during, and after the murder and no one said or noticed anything is crazy.

I've never heard of this case but was on a train to Victoria just the other day to catch a bus.i know it's many years ago bit It's shocking that this could happen and not be solved. I hope this person is finally caught. Love your channel xx

Those closed compartment train carriages on British Railways (BR) back in the 1980s were awful. Creepy. You could be effectively trapped in a small room with someone you had never met before. The old 1960s trains / rolling stock were eventually replaced.
You would have thought that someone would have raised the alarm the fact they didn't makes no sense to me tbh her death could have been entirely if they did do that

I can't help but notice that this murder took place in the same year that Child's Play was released.
He left a ton of DNA... should be able to find him.
The bit at 4:24 in this documentary sounds a lot like Robert napper. But I'm sure they'd have eliminated him from the DNA samples. Napper around that time 1988 had longish red-blondish hair , scruffy appearance , even looked shorter and stocky because of his stoop. His territory,

I remember being shocked by this murder at the time and felt so sorry for the woman being trapped with a maniac. Shows how the mind can play tricks though as I was sure she'd had her throat cut and this was the cause of death but it was the heart. I also don't remember that he'd got off at Victoria? Maybe I assumed he must've jumped before then as how could anyone possibly go unchallenged covered in blood like he was? I find it staggering he was able to get away with this. And no DNA match since then? So he didn't commit another crime after this one where he left some DNA? That seems crazy as someone as unhinged as this would surely seek out more victims?
Anyway, thanks for the video as I'd also forgotten the poor woman's name; so sympathy and respect to Debbie and her family.

It happened 35 years ago , it's likely he hadn't commited a crime before or after this incident. Otherwise they'd have something on him with DNA database. That's if they've eliminated everybody. Btw familial DNA isn't reliable sampling. It's inaccurate. Also . The killer might be dead now. I've got my theories personally on the suspect. But who knows.

i always wondered if this was one of levi belfield's killings, but the timelines and description mean this is unlikely, due to him being only 15. this of course does not make it impossible, but unlikely.

Interesting video, but some strange choices in illustrative film and pictures. For example, at 2' 29" the railway station looks like somewhere in Germany, or even India (as there are people on the track). And the sketch / plan of a railway carriage, which looks like about 1900.
There’s no way that was the first, or last time that man murdered someone, and yet he’s never been caught as his DNA would have popped up in searches. Scary.
Yes thats right, lets all slate and blame the other girl sat alone, hearing the screms, terrifed herself, and frozen with fear for the other girls death as she didnt pull the cord rather than the guy who murdered her.

Did the police ever consider that it may have been a guard on the train who attacked her?
And how sick is that woman who supposedly heard the screams coming from Debbie's compartment? Her excuse was that she was "glued to the seat". She wasnt "glued" when she managed to get of the train minutes later. Why didn't she then inform the British transport police then? I believe she actually may have made it up, considering no-one else heard it.

So you're suggesting that the guard wasn't in the corridor carriages where he should be and go out of a closed carriage where he shouldn't be, and cleaned the blood of his uniform, all without witnesses.
@@nlwilson4892 How should the guard be in the corridor? Do guards where you come from not have a compartment where they can go and sit down? Are guards where you are from only allowed to have one uniform?
@@jimmyavpi The guard would normally be checking tickets so going up and down the carriages with corridors checking people that had got on would have a ticket. Are you suggesting he could have been going about his normal duties whilst concealing an extra uniform that no-one noticed.
@@nlwilson4892 it doesn't take long to check tickets. Why would he have to conceal a second suit when he has his own little office space within one of the carriages.

It’s a very stupid design of a train…when you in a cabin, you can’t get out …that is made it possible for this person to kill…however his dna not find in any database is strange…

I wonder if he went abroad, interpol have DNA matches if it’s recorded, so it’d probably have to be some other continent. Who knows? I hope they do familial DNA tests, this it absolutely awful, imagine travelling from train station to home , just going about your daily business, and this happens!…….I’m not one to comment upon others reactions to situations, but the French girl didn’t alert someone? Seriously?……absolutely flabbergasted!……a whole train full of passengers and she sat there too afraid to act? I hope the family get answers and peace all this time.. ✌🏻🙏🏼
the person who did this may not be from the uk and never been arrested in the uk ether, they may have left the uk shortly after the murder so there wont be a dna profile and they may never come to the uk a gain and could possibely have died as it was 35 years a go

They could still solve this using new techniques with genetic genealogy.
