The Electrical Tape Method for Cardboard Filament Spools - 3D Printing

- You may have already heard, but the Bambulab AMS unit doesn't play well with cardboard spools, from slipping problems to dust inside the unit, while cardboard spools are becoming more and more popular. It's not an ideal situation, and so to overcome that, I wrap the edges of spools with electrical tape.
I have tried other methods like printing the rings for the edges, and I found it finicky, and I didn't like having to wait to print more rings.
Electrical tape has been quick & easy to implement, lasts as long as the roll lasts, and has caused me no problems while printing with the AMS. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
Great hack! The amount of filament and power saved by simply not having to print spool adapters for every other brand that uses cardboard spools is amazing. Thanks :D
I don’t even have a Bambu printer and I love this hack. Thanks!
Genius. Thanks, you saved my bacon!
edit: What also helped immensely, at least for me, was chucking in a couple of electrical tape rolls on either side of the cardboard spool. Doing this braces the cardboard spool in place, against the adjacent spools, and stops the cardboard from jumping and skewing to the side and jamming itself against the AMS motor.
I printed the spool adapters as well and was still having trouble with the cardboard spools feeding properly. I can't wait to try this! Thanks for the information/hack!!
Wow, this is great. I have been printing spool adapters, rings etc. I just tried this with a cardboard spool and I am floored. It works!!!! I’ve had my X1C since the kickstarter and I only wish I knew this then. I would have saved several spools of filament. Thanks so much😃
Yay! Glad I could help!
Thank you so much... I tried some kind of screw adapter and it just did not work at all. This 30 second hack worked instantly.
That's an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing!
✌️
Thank you for sharing this I am going to give it a try we have 20 rolls of the Eryone tried spool adapters but they just come off in the AMS. Hopefully this will work which will save re spooling 20 rolls! :) thank you :) x
Nice
You could try tape and the the rings. The rings won't slip, as the tape keeps it in place, and they're more stable than just the tape.
Thank you for the good idea. How wide is the tape?
