I'd guess it's more likely because he actually utilized save states, causing the run to essentially be invalidated. If he were to return to this, that'd probably be the first thing he'd change. Do recall something along those lines regarding another Hardcore Friday stream, so that'd probably apply here as well.
Here's a fun piece of trivia for you- the development team who made this, Hummer Team, couldn't actually afford an SNES. One of the team members would go to a library or a computer cafe or something where they had a public access SNES, and play music and describe gameplay over the phone to someone else on the development team who would try to transcribe it.
