"A strange inbetween translation." That's pretty common for Chinese games. Back 10 years ago, if you wanted an English version of a PS3 game that wasn't coming to the west, you'd import the Chinese version. They weren't always the best translation, but at least you could play Aquanaut's Holiday somewhat in English.
I feel like that Pokemon Diamond bootleg of Telefang is something a lot of people growing up in the early 2000's came across. A friend of mine had it on a bootleg cart that had entirely legit games, except for that. And if I remember right my friend was genuinely convinced it was a legit obscure Pokemon game. Of course we were like 9 years old but still.
I had a multi cart with "diamond" on it as well, luckily I had older brothers who knew what telefang was so at least I knew it wasn't actually a pokemon game.
@UCwoL48uS6WqjddNFQ1qYdDg No it was a third gen remake, around the same time as his Earthbound stream, way before wacky fecal funny, it was on relatable working young adult Joel era where he talked about his job and shit.
I definitely remember an old translation of Pokemon Gold/Silver from early 2000 as well. My favorite bit was this from a NPC: "This is my Slowpoke. It's so damn slow."
By now, I've seen probably a dozen bootlegs of that Smurfs game - and they _all_ have the same gamebreaking bug of the first key not working/existing. Quality™.
The funny thing that Pikachu sprite isn't even the worst one out of these The Smurfs Nightmare resprites. Nothing will top Man-chu from "The Pikacu Nightmare".
The key does work, at least for this specific Smurfs bootleg. The door's hitbox is just on the right side, not the center. They probably just didn't know how to move said hitbox after changing the graphics.
Both of bad translated Pokemon gold had made based on the Japanese version, I guess. In the Japanese version, a number of characters of Pokemon's name had been limited to 5 (now is 6). So Pokemon's name is supposed to be weird to observe that limit. Cyndaquil(Hinoa) is ヒノアラシ(Hinoarashi), Totodile(Wani) is ワニノコ(Waninoko) and Chikorita(Chico) is チコリータ(Chicolita or Chikolita). In other words, the Japanese name was probably transcribed into English and the first five characters were used as the name except some. NUT GET!
