Good system, but overrated. Sega Master System had superior graphics, and aside from a couple dozen or so classics, the vast majority of the rest of the NES library was garbage. SNES was a much better system with a better library.
Im so lucky to be born in 1981. I had such an amazing childhood. toys, video games, cartoons, movies. I was then and still am a massive nintendo fanboy.
It was even better to have been more than 1975. My age group was the one that drove the need for this system to be created because it was the first video game system that played a video game better than it was in the arcade. And they had never even duplicated the arcade. At that point, it was glorious.😂❤
I was born in 1994, so all of this I never experienced. But watching this somehow gave me hella nostalgia and made me want to go back to these times so bad. I grew up on the N64 and Playstation but this... this is awesome.
I cant say how many times I've rewatched this video. This is not only my favorite nescomplex video, but has to be the best video on the NES here on youtube.
I was born in 1972 and this era we both lived in is absolutely the best time of my life. Remember how amazing everything was? And NEW? And so cool. Toys R Us was the absolute best place for all games back then and my buddy Mike and I had to drive there from a small town that didn’t have that stuff on the release dates. It would be a 2 hour round trip to get the newest best game… I remember the day we went to get Blaster Master on release day and that game ended up being in my top 3 favorites ever
I always tried at first to keep them, but they were a pain to put everything back in and got torn anyways. It's a real shame Nintendo didn't do what Sega did with the hard cases.
I keep all my boxes and papers for everything now. I think realizing the things I threw away growing up had an effect, so now I have all this cardboard taking up space, even for stupid appliances.

You were supposed to hold the reset button as you turn off the power? I never knew that and didn't see any of my friends do that. I don't think I ever lost a save.
I think the idea was so the game didn't switch from console power to battery at the exact moment it was being written too. Incredibly unlikely, but not impossible, so better to put a warning.
....it was only for games / cartridges that had a built-in battery for saves , that U were supposed to do that for Most games did not, so it wasn’t an issue normally
I've always scoffed at the warning until yesterday. I began my first ever playthrough of legend of zelda, playing a bit here and there working off one save. Never holding reset while powering off. Then yesterday I went to resume my game with only the 9th dungeon left. The save was gone! It's not the battery either. So from now on, I'll heed the warning

This is so incredibly bittersweet. A beautiful encapsulation of what our generation has lost and what will never be seen again. We, who lived this life, had a perfect childhood and I am grateful to have been alive for the golden age of gaming.
Awesome video. I was in high school for this era. I loved me some NES but my “magical era” was the Atari and Commodore 64 era. My gaming sleepovers involved bringing an extra disk drive and a box of blank floppies to my friend’s house. By morning, our libraries were identical. ;)

We thought we could make everything better. Now it's nothing but pure cynicism. We've grown ugly since then.
@Unrelenting Dark Actually, '81 is the last year of Gen X (according to Wikipedia). I'm 40 too, so you and I are technically Gen X. Also, there's a micro generation that I believe most people here would identify with anyway... "Xennial" (those born between late 70s to early 80s).
@@NESComplex I remember first seeing it during a commercial break for Married with Children (I barely got the jokes)... but Christina Applegate😁 'remember her'...
This is the best NES retrospective I've seen. You've ticked all the boxes of my childhood memories. We were very fortunate to grow up in a time when technology was advanced but not so much it overtook our social interactions. I miss those times, the excitement of having earned enough money to go buy a new game in time for a sleepover that night. I like to think those of us who were there will be able to gather again in our final years, pulling all nighters together at the retirement home.
Thanks for the memories. I still remember my mom taking my siblings and I to Electronics Boutique at the mall and we were in awe looking at all the games, trying to decide which to buy. I remember we ended up getting Kung Fu and Excitebike. My parents didn’t have much money back then, but they worked hard to ensure we can get them. Love you mom and pops.
All of this stuff from the 80s and early 90s now almost seem like heaven to me. I miss that whole era before the internet. It just seemed like a better and more innocent world. Now that we have it we can't imagine not having it. But it was a lot less stressful... especially before social media and 24 x 7 news. People just lived their lives, interacted more, and didn't get so stressed out and caught up with everything going on in the world. The US just seemed so much more easygoing and balanced back in the 80s and 90s. It is hard to even fathom how office workers functioned without email. They probably actually did more work and didn't get bogged down by so much ridiculous nonsense. Sorry to bring modern life into a TH-cam video game post but this just brings me back to my happy place.
@@siler7 True. But everyone has an opinion on everything now that they can express in writing. So there will always be someone crying about a film or tv show that offended them and these idiots in Hollywood listen to them unfortunately.
Well look at why you have to mention all that! It's like trying to tell humanity we're going backwards, like we're all too involved in the most basic and non important things , Also I think more people are moody these days and we have more convenient ways of dealing with things but yet everyone can't seem to deal with life these Days, When I had my SNES and PS1 with the N64 later on,life was fantastic, not only cause the game system's,it was the fact that the world outside was a better place than it was now and these consoles remind us when the world was more laid-back We're always asking ourselves what the hell happened to us?
This video continues to be my go-to when I’ve had a rough day. All the love and joy of my childhood brought back to me like a warm hug from my past. Thank you for making this.
I owned an NES when I was in middle school in the late '80s. I was obsessed with the Mario Bros. I remember "Mario Madness" or "Mario Mania" being a big thing during this time and wanting a bunch of Super Mario Bros.-related merch that was being sold at Child World and other retail places.
I will forever remember the day I discovered my now beloved nes in my grandma's shed. I had been searching for my old ds and when I moved stuff over in one of those plastic tubs there it was, I didn't understand what it was when I saw it at first, but it was sitting there as if it had been waiting for someone to uncover it again after all these years. I brung it inside and went through it, I was in awe like never before, it felt like Christmas came early. I spent hours carefully cleaning it, the game paks, and controllers. That night my grandma and I spent hours setting it up as it was on a newer tv and we got confused. The first game we got working was Dr. Mario, without the manual I was lost but determined to play so I spent a good couple of hours mastering it. My nes is my greatest treasure, I want to keep it in good condition so the next generation can enjoy it too!
Remember how i lifted the controller in the air when i jumped with Mario for the first time. The nes and super nes was really something special. A new reality.
Perfect love letter to living in a Nintendo world in the 80’s and early 90’s. I can relate to everything u said. It definitely was a different time and a magical time. I’ll always cherish those times and live vicariously through my retro games as I play them. 🙂
I'm never tired of seeing this video!!! State of the Art for those of us who lived this era, die hard NES Lovers!!!! Nostalgia guaranteed 100%!!! Great Work!!!!👏👏👏
The 80’s were a pocket in time we will never see again. I had an NES at this time, and although I did go over friends houses to play games and party, most of my time was spent at the roller rink, they had an arcade, food court, and did laser shows every weekend. I don’t regret wasting so much time at that roller rink, cause it’s how I found my husband. And here we are almost 40 years later playing animal crossing on switch.
Even though I was born after the NES life cycle, I still feel nostalgic over this video. Back in the late '80s early '90s it was a much simpler time, And while I think game development has grown a lot for the better too, I kind of wish I could go back when gaming was like this.
It was truly a great time to not only be a gamer but just be alive period. The 80s and 90s were so much fun. Every kid on the playground would be talking about what secret they had found the previous night in Zelda or metroid, or how close they came to finally beating Mike Tyson. I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything. I got my Nintendo for Christmas in 1988, and I've owned almost every Nintendo system since then. Sony and Microsoft really upped the industry graphics wise, but I almost always find myself playing my switch now more than my ps5
No joke man… watching this literally almost made me lose it. This time was the best time of my life. I was 14 in 1985 when I got my Nintendo with Super Mario brothers and then the next game I got was Metroid. Such a great time to be alive.
i always enjoyed flipping through the pages of manuals checking out enemies, items, how to plays, the artwork, etc. it added to the experience. it was nice opening the box and seeing all the stuff inside. you got the game, the manual, a dust cover sometimes, inserts, maybe a poster. nowadays instead of giving you your money's worth some companies just want to offer you "convenience". what a shame.

I keep coming back to this video when I just need some warm, fuzzy pure nostalgia. My parents never got me a NES (I did get a SNES Christmas of '92), but pretty much all my friends had one, so I spent a lot of time at various friend's houses playing with them. My best friend down the street especially, since I could just walk 5 minutes to his place.

Great Nostalgic Memories! I got the Atari 2600 when I was 10 in 1981 for Christmas. Then it was Christmas of 85 or 86, where I got the NES. Great times and memories! My parents, I mean Santa Clause was good to me, lol! 😊👍

Not just Toys R Us, but all the other proper toy stores like KB Toys, Lionel Playworld, etc. There are no more dedicated toy stores like those. Sad and unfortunate.
I’ve seen so many NES retrospectives that I honestly didn’t know whether to watch this or not. I’m glad I did, because this was absolutely beautiful! The perfect mix of content to induce pure nostalgia and so many happy memories. It’s unbelievable to me that anyone has had the audacity to hit the thumbs down button on this video.
This was the wonderful and joyous times of my childhood described perfectly, and yes Mr. narrator, I remember it all !! NES dominated my childhood. The good old days....To this Day 32 years later I still play once a week with my best friend from second grade..
I remember getting my games at Kay Bee Toys, opening the box on the way out and reading the manual as we walked through Montgomery Ward to get to the car. I got my NES in april '89 so a lot of the older games my friends had weren't available anymore. it wasn't until the mid 90s that used games really became a thing. The first game I ever got was Xevious because it was the cheapest one in the store.
Few make nostalgia-fueled content as well as you do. Another great episode, man! As someone that grew up with the NES and related to everything talked about in this video, I appreciate it. :)
Thanks for transporting me to the 1980's and 1990's. This is a "lost paradise". I remember a kid in the neighborhood spent the Christmas of 1990 playing Super Mario Bros. 3...the "crown jewel" of video games.
I remember getting my NES at 2020 after my grade 12 graduation. It was pandemic and most game stores were either closing up shop or not opened but my local game store let customers in at a decated time. I decided to wait many many years for the right time to buy my NES and that day came. My birthday in July, I bought my NES right at noon and rushed home to play some Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt with my father and mother. We spent the pandemic together playing games while I slowly expanded the libary and more and more memories come each time.n
Being born in 1978…this is simply magical. As a father of a 19 and 16 yr old, I am proud to still say we play NES together in the garage on a weekly basis.
When a video makes you feel so good, and incredibly depressed at the same time. We’ll never have those times again, but damn if it isn’t good to remember.

Haha! You're only old if you stop playing!!!
@DEAD CHANNEL 2 things. 1) don't call a Gen Xer a Millennial. 2) If you're going for an insult, at least spell the insult correctly.
@Unrelenting Dark
Actually, '81 is the last year of Gen X (according to Wikipedia). I'm 40 too, so you and I are technically Gen X.
Also, there's a micro generation that I believe most people here would identify with anyway... "Xennial" (those born between late 70s to early 80s).
this mini documentary hit all my nostalgic feel-goods, thank you.
Smiles and nods my head -- remembering how magical that time truly was.
To this day my heart swells and I tear up when I see that epic Mario 3 commercial. I was so excited.
I know! Me too!
Narrator: “Remember the posters?” Me: Dude, I can still smell them!
I come back to this video a couple times a year just for the feeling of nostalgia. And it never disappoints 🎉 thank you for making this.
That's because we were kids whose world was closely filtered by our parents
It wasn't. People just didn't have as many opportunities to show their true selves without repercussions.
@@siler7 True. But everyone has an opinion on everything now that they can express in writing. So there will always be someone crying about a film or tv show that offended them and these idiots in Hollywood listen to them unfortunately.
I agree with you and truly was a better time. Games were done they didn't get patches.
Well look at why you have to mention all that! It's like trying to tell humanity we're going backwards, like we're all too involved in the most basic and non important things
, Also I think more people are moody these days and we have more convenient ways of dealing with things but yet everyone can't seem to deal with life these Days,
When I had my SNES and PS1 with the N64 later on,life was fantastic, not only cause the game system's,it was the fact that the world outside was a better place than it was now and these consoles remind us when the world was more laid-back
We're always asking ourselves what the hell happened to us?
Definitely the sweep when coming to blowing cartridges. Miss waking up early to watch those Saturday morning cartoons.
You were using motion control
My sister always did this and it bugged the hell outta me!
dont forget the tongue, allways out when playing
Perfect love letter to living in a Nintendo world in the 80’s and early 90’s. I can relate to everything u said. It definitely was a different time and a magical time. I’ll always cherish those times and live vicariously through my retro games as I play them. 🙂
One heck of a nice nostalgia trip. Thanks! I definitely have some holiday memories of NES and SNES.
Nailed my childhood, 100%! I remember all those things, and loves it. Those were the days, I'd go back in a heartbeat!
The games were simple but there was more original content.
I'm not ashamed to say that I was moved to tears by this video.
Hahaha... you shouldn't be... it's just a testament to how much it meant to us!
@@NESComplex anyway, strong work. Love your channel.
I have to admit, I regularly watch this because as an 80s kid this video is just perfect. You nailed it man. I love this!
Not gonna lie bro... I got teary eyes. THANK YOU.
No joke man… watching this literally almost made me lose it. This time was the best time of my life. I was 14 in 1985 when I got my Nintendo with Super Mario brothers and then the next game I got was Metroid. Such a great time to be alive.
Man, I miss manuals...
Driving home from the videostore after hiring a game and going through the manuals was such an awesome joy
They were a big part of the experience... i do to
Cave Story for Switch comes with a manual. It was a really nice touch. The smell was so good.
@@lh9591 I had forgotten about that! I had to go look at it again. It has a teeny-tiny CD, too.
i always enjoyed flipping through the pages of manuals checking out enemies, items, how to plays, the artwork, etc. it added to the experience. it was nice opening the box and seeing all the stuff inside. you got the game, the manual, a dust cover sometimes, inserts, maybe a poster. nowadays instead of giving you your money's worth some companies just want to offer you "convenience". what a shame.
What any incredibly underrated channel. The sheer amount of work and production quality of these videos is incredible and a true testament to the love of retro games. I really hope this channel gets the praise and admiration it deserves. Keep up tye good work please and know that this work is appreciated by many.
I really appreciate the kind words! I always give it my all in every aspect of each video. It means a lot when someone expresses that they’ve noticed. 😁
Thank you for the walk through my childhood. I didn't just watch it. I felt it and relived it... Ty.
I have watched this video 8 times. And 8 times it has brought a smile to my face and fond memories. Thank you.
Thank you!!
My god the opening song is my childhood
Me too! That's exactly why I chose it!
Oh yes
nice children ,bro LoL~~~~~~~~~~
@@overdosh what?
@@kylealexander7024 in china during that years we just play Famicon with Contra and mario not like US play such much more games ,dude . that's what I mean..
Thank you so much for making this. It really tug at the heart strings and made us all remember why we love this time in our lives so much.
This is the first video I've watched from your channel and it was perfection. As a child of the '80s, you basically described my entire childhood. Thanks for the amazing memories.
Great Nostalgic Memories! I got the Atari 2600 when I was 10 in 1981 for Christmas. Then it was Christmas of 85 or 86, where I got the NES. Great times and memories! My parents, I mean Santa Clause was good to me, lol! 😊👍
Wow I’m 47 and I lived every word you spoke. I was that kid with everything Nintendo.. my 4 daughters are all into gaming now. So when I pull out my crates of retro gaming we get lost in my Time my era. maybe for a moment you forget the number of pixels and just enjoy who your with… love the time…
Such a good console!
This was such a great video. I would love to see a Super Nintendo video in this style.
Man Super Nintendo was great spent hours looking at gaming magazines staring at the SNES games before I finally got one for Christmas
Toys R Us...man, I feel bad for kids now that will grow up without ever experiencing the magic of that place.
Today's kids will never know the bliss of Toys R Us. In fact, all they do is stare at iPads all day.
Atleast we still have it in Canadia
Palace*
I remember in 1988 mine still had Intellivision games.
Not just Toys R Us, but all the other proper toy stores like KB Toys, Lionel Playworld, etc. There are no more dedicated toy stores like those. Sad and unfortunate.
Beautiful video man , the 80s were a blessing to be born in
This entire video described my whole young life. I was born in 1977 and was plenty old enough to remember and enjoy all of what you spoke on.
1977 FTW. Me too! So I’m sure we have a lot of overlap in our childhood experiences
This video overflows with nostalgia.
The 80s feel like a different universe. What I would give to go back and reexperience it.
It feels like a lifetime away!
I’m baffled that this channel has so few subs.
Hey 50k isn't exactly chump change
This channel definitely deserves way more subs, it's one of the best channels out there, covering classics.
I think its because kids nowadays are just stuck on Fortnite. People 30 and up (I'm 38) love this stuff. I watch it while I eat something.
Agreed
ikr this is the apex of editing
So many memories flooding back to me...kids today will never know this joy
I’ve seen so many NES retrospectives that I honestly didn’t know whether to watch this or not. I’m glad I did, because this was absolutely beautiful! The perfect mix of content to induce pure nostalgia and so many happy memories. It’s unbelievable to me that anyone has had the audacity to hit the thumbs down button on this video.
Love this video, play it often even if not I’m watching. It’s short, sweet and gives me those warm nostalgic feels every time.
What an amazing video. These memories really take me back to my youth. Well done my friend
Thank you for making me smile today. Hope you do this with the SNES!
Thank you for writing to say something. It really does matter. I’m glad you enjoyed it
The music clips alone bring back so many memories! I miss the 80’s!
This was the wonderful and joyous times of my childhood described perfectly, and yes Mr. narrator, I remember it all !! NES dominated my childhood. The good old days....To this Day 32 years later I still play once a week with my best friend from second grade..
This was so great to watch. Thank you for making it.
Great video! Every topic and emotion from that era was exactly the way that I remembered. Glad to know that I'm not alone.
Incredible work with this one. At 43 I still play my NES from time to time. Just too good to let it go I guess
I come to this video a lot! Best Nes video on TH-cam HANDS DOWN!!!!!!
Thank you! Im going to do a similar take on the SNES soon. Can't wait!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO MAKE THAT ONE LESS GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Few make nostalgia-fueled content as well as you do. Another great episode, man! As someone that grew up with the NES and related to everything talked about in this video, I appreciate it. :)
Dawg, you killed it with this video
Thank you! Thank you!
Thanks for transporting me to the 1980's and 1990's. This is a "lost paradise". I remember a kid in the neighborhood spent the Christmas of 1990 playing Super Mario Bros. 3...the "crown jewel" of video games.
Nothing I've ever watched on TH-cam invoked as much nostalgia as this did.
This is one of the best things I ever watched. Had tears in my eyes the whole time. Good job.
Honestly. Had tears of nostalgia. The NES revolutionized video games. Loved this video.
I can't wait for the one for the SNES :)))
You can still buy one now and enjoy it
I love the NES so much, it's amazing that after owning one for over 30 years I'm still discovering great games. The consoles themselves are tanks, I've yet to find one that can't be revived by a little cleaning
My Latino parents would call my Nintendo "Nientiendo" which translates to "I don't get it" :D
That’s funny! They probably didn’t get it. My parents never did.
Nintendo? Nientiendo. Same thing with my parents. They joked that while setting it up.
Jajaja también!
I didn't think time travel was possible until I watched this video. This certainly brought back all the feels. Oh, to go back to the 80's and be a kid again!!
What a time to be alive, was a blessing and a curse to experience that wonderful time. Love this video always cheers me up thank you
