I have had this same motor for over 30 years and it still goes, I did replace the Stator and trigger because the wires were coming apart the motor still runs very good. It is now 2018 and I am going to the lake this week.
Thanks for the video I just got the same motor on a 1972 16ft Starcraft Jupiter and my wires are toast. One wire at a time is excellent advice. Ohh and yea, old two stroke outboards should be smoking at low RPMs. The 50:1 fuel to oil mixture is for full throttle operation (@5500 RPM) since there is no regulation of the oil in old 2 stroke engines they smoke at low rpm burning the excess oil. The new two strokes (evinrude) have computer controlled oil injection and run super clean. Trouble is I love the smell of two stroke in the morning!
I I have a Mercury Thunderbolt 500 50 horsepower thank you so much I was just about to throw away the engine after watching your video you just save me a engine I had the same problem you are a lifesaver
so glad i could help, for me i try not throw anything away. i need to do everything i can do to fix it so i can learn, It never hurts to learn even in some cases lol you still might chuck it but all ways know you did everything you could do to try and fix it and if one day you can help just one other person its a life lesson that goes along way thanks for the comments and have a great day..... from Rich & Peggy
hi sure break down to where the problem is take front cover off where you can get to the carbs and try to spray some carb cleaner in there if motor starts just for a sec: then start with a fuel problem check all your lines make sure you are getting fuel where it needs to be now if you spray and wont start at all then you need to start looking at coil packs remove one wire put a old spark plug there and see if you have spark when cracking if you do..... then you mit have a controled spark problem this can be a few things 1 . a trigger 2. the switchbox 3. a stator poss one of those or all 3 if you are not able to test those your self you mite want to seek help i hope this helps let me know... thanks for asking!
Very cool! I have a 1971 80hp 2-stroke motor that just quit on me. Guess what! it was the trigger assembly wires that rotted away just like yours. Unfortunately mine requires the whole distributor housing to be removed. I am now trying to reinstall and figure out how to re-time the motor due to the distributor being out of the motor and I forgot to mark the old part before removing.
Nice repair I have a 1983 mercury 80 HP it's not a thunderbolt I have been looking for a repair manual for this motor but I can't seem to find one. Can you help?
well on my boat the fuel filter for what it was well its down in the tank mine is a plastic tank and i found it down inside the outlet you can unscrew it and remove to inspect or and clean hope this helps....
Thanks for that! I found found pretty much the same. One filter/strainer inside the fuel tank on the fuel pick up line and another filter/strainer inside the bayonet fitting that screws into the outside of the cowling. Just thought there might have been another fuel filter upstream of the carburetor with a water separating bowl like other outboards of this vintage but it does not look like it.
what a great ? yes even i had to go on the internet to find out what was the mix my self so... yes you need to mix oil in the fuel! so to break it down should be 50:1 , I found this site this should help you as did for me www.blueheronwings.com/bh/comps/FuelMix.php
Thank you very much, this helped me a lot, I bought this same model of engine and I had this question, but now it has another problem, it turns off when it heats up
