Rusty, It's been a year since this Impeller Video. Can you do this again and NO Fast Forward, please? AND do close-up slow, one part at a time. The close-up is what helps. I had to find out how to stop video and expand fuzzy pictures. But, you nailed it for me doing my 1978 Thunderbolt 80hp 800, and found that the kit I had came with the wrong new bottom pump housing, so I reused the original.

I will do so when I change it again, will probably be at the end of this season.

Greatly appreciate this detailed video! Any chance you’ve replaced the starter/solenoid? My grandfather handed down his 69 StarCraft super sport and 80hp merc800el. Unfortunately, after not being able use it during the record hot summer, it did not start today. Figured it was battery so replaced it, but no action. Took off the engine cover to get a better look and it seems the starter does not engage the fly wheel when the key is turned. Does this sound like anything you’ve dealt with? Will definitely be subscribing to save this video!

I have removed the starter, and it is no fun! Make sure to remove all cowling and watch for tight wires as you push down on the mid section. This will make it easier to pull the starter out. There are a few bolts that just feel impossible to get to, but if I can do it I have faith in you!

Great video by the way-question don’t you have to disconnect the shift linkage to remove the lower unit ?

On this year it’s simply splined together and come apart on its own and goes back together on its own as long as you don’t bump it or the throttle

help! i can not get the lower unit back on. left it in fwd and tried spinning the drive shaft, but it will not go the last inch or so to seat itself. any tips or tricks?

I’m sure you got it by now but don’t spin the drive shaft, spin the flywheel. It’s even easier if you pop the spark plugs out first

How is the fuel economy on these old motors. Is the 800 a 3 cyl or 4 cyl motor? Thanks

This is a 4 cylinder. I honestly think this motor on this 19’ Reinell does great on fuel for what it is. At 20kts with the family on board I average about 4 gallons per hour, or put another way 5 nautical mpg. Not bad for a 55 year old motor.

Thanks for the video! I've got a model200 20hp. Having trouble finding parts for it. Any suggestions for a web site?

Can you tell me about the fuel pump. I have an 80 hp. Thanks

There are two vacuum fuel pumps located on the side of the motor. Identical in parts, so order two rebuild kits. They are quite simple to take apart and rebuild, although the lower one is a bit of pain to get to the lowest bolt. I was able to unbolt the chassis frame (for lack of a better term) and that allowed the mid section to drop low enough to access it. I believe I had to disconnect a couple wires from the coil that pulled tight too. If I get in there again I’ll make another video
