I have a 50 thunderbolt that I'm trying to get back into action and I think my issue is with this system. Runs fine at high rpm but suddenly kills when I try to bring it down to idle. I've been messing with carbs thinking that was the issue but then someone said I needed to look at the CDI box. I will be looking at it tomorrow. Thanks for the video.
Just fixed that exact issue with the trigger and stator replacement on my 50 thunderbolt. I also replaced the fuel system and cleaned the carbs. Thanks for the video
There are two clamps on boat side of the engine under the 1st door that pops off the cover with a twist lever the clamps pop out and you undo the half hook deals.
Hey can you send me a photo of wiring on bottom yellow wire down and there’s that main red and the little yellow and red and there all disconnected don’t know where they go
Hey i have the same exact motor ,my timing is off i was just wondering if your motor shows any indication of where you would line the flywheel up with to get the timing right?
Hello!! I just bought the 40HP same line engine. I m in Greece . The Mercury agent in our country told me though that I cannot find most basic spare parts. Do you have any idea where I can ask for spare parts? Thanks . Elias
@Jordan Rose i found the problem i need to set the timing on the side its super messed up i have no idea what to do though do you know anything about it
i have the same motor and my trim is leaking when i raise it all the way up that little handle wont lock it so it stays i feel like im doing something wrong and need to lock it up so i can get close to sandbars do you know how
@@jordanrose1194 no it gets loose as I drive. is there supposed to be one mounted to the engine or just hanging on the fuel line my filter is just on the line
It should be staying hard I do not have a filter in my line. Just rely on the fuel filter built in the side of the motor. There is a small white plastic piece with a screw in middle of it and if you take that out that’s the fuel filter/pump area. Then always use good high octane gas. My motor I have to mix my oil in the gas 50:1 also. Hope this helps. The fuel line from tank should just be the quick attach at the tank followed by hose to the primer bulb then more hose then the other quick attach to the engine.
You should replace all fuel lines that are Grey and use black. The ethanol in today's gas eats away at the inner linings on the Grey ones. Trust me you'll.
Hi! I have problem whit my thunderbolt 50hp 1988 i guess. When i drive on half speed its run fine but when i use full speed then motor is not have power to run up. But when I adjust the trigger stay, it winds up after a lot of screwing back and forth. And then it goes well until I let go of the gas and will gas full again then it goes bad and smokes a lot. Have try another stator. Cdi. Ignition coils. With without improvement. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Sorry bad English I'm from Sweden. With kind regards Simon
Have you replaced your trigger? And could it be anything to do with your carbs? Also cables could have a part to do with it? Just a few more things to try.
@@brad___1378 remember those Motors are Lube by 2-cycle oil inside of the gasoline so when they sit for long. Of time that little bit of residue is gone so take the spark plugs out mix little STP oil treatment with some two-cycle mix gasoline so it'll be a little runny at first until the gasoline evaporate scorched head into the cylinders and allow it to penetrate all the piston rings and all the parts that'll be metal-to-metal so it doesn't hurt anything when you first start running the engine until the fuel lubrication is able to compensate start application same thing you do with a brand new motor that was just rebuilt

It’s actually a pretty great motor enjoy it!

Yup, that’s my motor. And my wires are fried. Part number for replacement or could I just rewire? Thanks for the video
Is it the wires attached to the board on the side?
Yea I just don’t know where they go yet. I ordered the engine harness and boat side wire harness. When they get here I’ll start investigating more.

My Grandpa has This Exact Motar on His Boat :)
I just bought the same boat! Mine is an 81 1600 lol except it has blue seats instead of the brown.

And yes, this was the fix. Motor has been running great since putting in the new CDI box.
I Plan on Buying a 9.8 Thunderbolt. If I have trouble would this work. Just asking to keep in mind just in case.
hey man, great video. thank you! I have the same motor and i want to install a kill switch. any idea if that can be done directly on the gear box?

Hey I got the same boat can you please help me how can I call or contact you?
just curious what was the motor acting like before repairs?
In my case it just wouldn’t start at all.
What exactly does the trigger do. I got mine running and starting good it just won't charge the battery while it's running
That wouldn’t pertain to the trigger I don’t believe.
Yeah I got all that but I'm talkin about the very bottom cowling
Below the wrap around part. As far as I know I don’t believe that comes off as far as I’m aware of on my unit anyway.

Always oil cylinders down before starting a motor that set for years
