That's what i'm saying he needs the longer video's on this channel and the short one's on the other channel. Love watching this guy. Really like the comment my friend!
Dang Son, gotta love a mercury!, I was born in 54 and so this yr Merc has its place in my heart. To bad i dont have the funds or it would be in my drive way, anyway nice rescue and revival of an nice original American classic.
I think it has a 255ci Y block 161hp V8. Y blocks had valve train oiling issues that can be dealt with. Dual exhaust and a 4 bbl. carb make these old V8s go faster.
Don’t fight the fuel tanks. I modified an old electric concrete mixer with arms and straps to tie the tank to it. Dump a couple of handfuls of self tapping screws and sharp steel stuff in it, add some paint thinner or mineral spirits, cap the holes, and let her tumble all night. Rinse it out when clean, use a magnet to pull out the sharp steel tumbling media. Keep up the fight, Mortske
I always use an old roto-rooter with a couple pounds of ball bearings to do pretty much the same thing, it does a great job and is a lot easier than trying to get it cleaned out with chemicals ( and not to mention it's not as hazardous to your health ) the good thing about the roto-rooter is I didn't have to modify it since it has the easy-release drum, I just made a separate attachment for it out of an old 20" bike wheel and some angle iron and it is also great for mixing up 5 gallon buckets of paint or polyurethane for when I have to repaint the shop and reseal the back deck.
My dad had a 55 ford and to this day he still talks about it being one of his best cars. He'd love to find another one. He will be turning 85 in march and still gets around better than I do at 52yo.
I drive a school bus for a living and those kids scream for no reason what so ever it is nice to hear an adult talking in a nice calming voice even if it about the mice and bugs, so who cares what you think Frank Ennaro . I used to work on TV shows when I was in the IATSE and I think this kind of content and production values are very good. I know what I am talking about.
One of the cars of my youth. From 1950 (the year I was born) until late into the Sixties Dad drove FOMOCO. Flatheads and Y-blocks were the order of the day. It’s the reason for me loving the old Fords so much. Okay, I’ve got a soft spot for the older pre tri-five chevy’s as well. I hope, the person that ends up with the Merc keeps it inside out of the elements and is able to show it off with pride.

What an awesome car Mortske! One of my favorites that you have had on the channel. Great job bringing her back to life! This reminded me of when I pulled my 66 Triumph GT6 out of a field after 40 years. You have one of the best channels! Thank you for the great content!
I tell my dog to hold on too and she braces on the console and back seat. Amazing how smart they are. For Millie it does no good to spell ride after saying go. Go is all she needs to get excited. Back in 1967 my good friend Rob lived next door. His dad was a mechanic for a chevy dealer and Rob was mechanical minded just like his father. The family didn't have much money to spare (8 kids), so when Rob was 14 his dad bought him a 54 Merc that wasn't running in order to get the kid a car cheap that Rob could fix up by the time he turned 16. They had a large garage with all the car tools anyone would need, remember his dad is a mechanic. The trans (yes, mercomatic) wasn't working at all, so Rob pulled it out. After a month or so I went over to see Rob while he was in the garage working on the Merc. He had the trans completely taken apart, it looked like a thousand different pieces. All kinds of different springs, bebes, rods, plungers, nuts, bolts, washers, filters and you name it! I was a mechanical guy (later an engineer) myself, but I looked all those pieces all over the place in different pans and tubs, and I though I would never want to take on that job, I'll just stick to manual transmissions. I though how will 14yo Rob ever get this pile of stuff back together. But then I though again, it's Rob he can do it. He did it, it took him two years. He got the trans back together and repaired a few other things all with out much from dad.
My mom had one of these when i was about 14 - I still remember - 161 hp, 256 cubes. 2 door sedan with a cheap paint job. Cool car! Ford must have a thing for history. This was the first year for the Y-block. The Fords were 239 cu, just like the flattie, so of course the Merc had to also be 255, like the flattie. Weird.
Glad to see you're back making longer videos on 50"s cars. I like your Enginuity and ability to make things happen. I'd like to see this when you get the exhaust and cleaned up a bit.

It's really cool to watch you take a car in decent shape and do something with it. It's a different kind of video. I definitely enjoyed watching you do this👍
Also Mort, thank God this Y-block wasn't stuck from the get! I'll never forget that old Y-block exploderating in your face! Thank God you weren't hurt on that one bud...
I have to say Morske, that’s the finest example of a purchase you’ve had in audited a while. I can’t believe you won’t restore the old hirl. Well, find her a good home.
Love the fact that this is a longer video just because I get to spend some more time watching you do your thing, just awesome. I am so working on my 90 Dodge W250 with a 5.9L 360 in it. I got it from a friend that was a Army Vet after he died he was like my brother, we're close. All that inspiration, i'm just saving it up right now, maybe I will make a video on it, never know. Thank you for what you do I know it's not easy messing with a camera and having to deal with not so nice peoples on the internet, but you just keep on man. Have a good one be safe stay warm and God Bless you and your family.
You have done a great job on this 54 Mercury. Think it will make a great restoration. You have done more on this car. Than you have in awhile. Hope it gets a great home. Thank you Mortske for sharing!
My neighbor had a 67 Cougar sitting in her driveway under a tarp my entire life. It belonged to her son who had passed away, so she wouldn't sell it. It had been under a tarp and the windows were covered, so the interior was damn near perfect. It had 34K on it. I tried numerous times to buy it, but she wouldn't sell. I worked for a large auto parts retailer at the time, and one day a guy came in buying parts for a '67 Cougar. I asked him where he got it from. He got it from my neighbor. Guess how much he paid for it. 100 fucking dollars! He had been trying to buy it as well, and she just sold to him one day for $100. He had to put about $4000 into it, but he drove it up and let me see it run a few months later. I repeat....she sold this car in 2010 for $100 after I had been trying to buy it, and had offered her a lot more for it. I guess he caught her on the right day.
I hate that! My brother in law did that to me with his 69 Pontiac Tempest! I tried to buy it from him for years and I would have given him a fair price bc the car had no rust and the interior was in excellent condition. He ended up selling it to a stranger for way less than I would have paid for it! 🤬
@@kimberlywilliams9757 Back in the early 80's, my brother bought a '69 Tempest. It was a really nice car except that every time he wanted to start it - he had to crawl under and jiggle or tap on the shims on the starter.....but, it always ran. He said that he paid $175 for it - bought it from a girl he knew in high school. When he went to pay for it, he asked her why she was selling it for only $175 ?? Her reply, "Well....I never had $175 before......" !
That’s the cleanest car ever on your channel… the “American Made” quality is amazing! I actually felt upset when you beat the hell out of the ORIGINAL battery cables!! Crazy cool find! I hate the crap we buy today! Just think… it was $2,500. or less off the showroom floor… G-Dang… for a living room with two couches ON freekin wheels!!
Two and a half hours of Mortske! My week is set! My first impression of this car was "it's too nice for Mortske, I wonder who he is fixing it for?" Then I felt bad for doubting you. Someone is going to get a nice survivor car and $4500 is a good deal!
I’m with you Mortske, I was telling the Ole’ Lady Today that I’m done with Winter in Pa. Tennessee sounds real good to me & my Old Bones. Loving the Two Hours Plus Vidja’s & I know it’s a Ton of work, for that Thank You Kindly Sir I’ll catch you on the next one. Keep It Safe Out There Sir
Duff may not have thumbs, but he can suck start a Mercury... handy fella to have around when you have the starter luck that Sir Morticus has. Cool car!!
Well played. Merc-O-Matic is a three speed transmission but when in drive it starts in second. Only goes in first when you select Lo. I have one in my 61 Monterey. It has been a good transmission and with the 352 it’s fast enough for daily duty.
My dad and I watch you every chance we get always cool to see what your working on and it takes my dad back to his childhood/growing up definitely wish this would give him the push to turn wrenches again with me lol
Fantastic job mortski .that's why you get the big money. every thing on that was top of the line except the hood hinges. The trunk hinges are a work of art. Had a great time. Monday is my favorite day of the week
Good deal! Much better than the other crippled vehicles that usually follow you home! This Mercury is pure class. So glad you and Sir Duff got it running (thanks to some interwebs parts). Again, thank you Mr. Mortske and Sir Duff to present quality entertainment and repair knowledge. Please don't sell the shop!
Admittedly, it would look very nice in the garage next to my 65 Merc - and my Grandfather is named Ralph. Unfortunately, I can't afford it, but someone is gonna love this car the way it should be.
Impressed with probably the most effort I"ve seen yet for replacing parts. When the flexie hoses came off I knew this was serious! All in good fun bro!
I like that you fixed more stuff on this video. Replace the rotted metal, install new tank and exhaust and clean and this Merc becomes a going to town rig.
One of my favorite videos. Amazing. I looked for a fuel pump for my 39 buick. Was cheaper to rebuild it. Got kit off ebay. Saved the 6 volt electric pump for an emergency lol. Thanks for the great video. Gonna watch this one a couple times.
@@MortskeRepair good luck sir. Had my 4th back surgery last Thursday I am hoping to have my buick on the road for spring. I have learned a lot watching you. Thank you for what you do.
Loved this episode. That old Merc is sweet. Can't believe the floors were still there. Back in the 50s when I was a kid my Dad bought a new 57 Merc Turnpike Cruiser station wagon. Red and white. It was good looking and would haul ass . That Merc you have has a lot of potential. Thanks for putting extra time, effort and parts into it to get it in running condition. I also love the 55 Fords but the 57 was sharp. Robert Mitchum drove a black one in the movie Thunder Road as a moonshine runner.
Loved the car. Loved the video. Mondays don’t come around soon enough. Well, maybe for you they do. Never known of anyone with the depth and breadth of knowledge that you have regarding cars and trucks from the eras that you do. Especially at your relatively young age. Your videos are real. None of the polished, hyped up crap you see on these fast talking, super sparkly videos about cars, parts and modifications that are beyond the means of many shade tree mechanics with families, bills etc to deal with. You show how it can be done with some basic hand tools and creativity. One of my other favorite You Tubers went the way of the glitz and quite frankly his schtick got old and the glitz ain’t cuttin it. I like your grit, don’t change. If what you’re doing makes you happy, keep it up. I know you grumble here and there, but your excitement and pleasure when a project is finished while you’re behind the wheel is just as obvious. Take ‘er easy mate. Keep the greasy side down!
Batteries can surprise you sometimes. I sold used batteries for years at a junkyard. I brought back one that was 17 years old that came out of a 79 280Z that had been sitting for nine years when I bought the car. I had to charge it for 4 days on 3 different machines, but it tested like a brand new battery. I even left it on the shelf for a few days to make sure that it held it, and it did. I actually ended up putting it in a car that I sold. I didn't even change the acid.
Awesome extended video on Mortske Monday! Never been a Pontiac fan but that car was well built and maintained. It deserves a good home and to be made whole! You should keep it. 👊💪👍🙏
My parents had twin Montereys (56 models) back in the 60s. My dad had a 4 door, my mom had a 2 door. If I had the money and a way to get to North Dakota, I'd buy it! Great job getting her back on the road Mort! 😎
Mortske I envy you for the temporary relief from the incessant cricket menace... down here in Texas we don't usually get any kind of break from them... this winter has been cold enough to rid us of them 😂 I'm not sure if that is worth the price of having to wear an extra layer of clothing or not but it is a silver lining... but I am really glad it's not as cold as it was when i lived in Wisconsin... ( which is actually why I don't live there anymore )
Morts, Love watching your videos. This all takes me back to the 60,s and early 70,s when I first got the fever. Lots of stuff you are doing I watched and learned from MY FIL who was a quintessential shade tree mechanic. Much appreciated!
Looks good. The older I get the better I like crew cabs lol. And I laughed so hard at Duff and that exhaust pipe! I have never seen a dog do that.
He's something else
It's really cool to watch you take a car in decent shape and do something with it. It's a different kind of video. I definitely enjoyed watching you do this👍
@user-ts3ie5pb8e ⬆⬆⬆⬆ SCAMMER!!!!! ⬆⬆⬆⬆
If only we had more decent ones!
Also Mort, thank God this Y-block wasn't stuck from the get! I'll never forget that old Y-block exploderating in your face! Thank God you weren't hurt on that one bud...
Duff snorting the tail pipe I cannot stop laughing. Who thought up that exhaust manifold. Nice interior
I have to say Morske, that’s the finest example of a purchase you’ve had in audited a while. I can’t believe you won’t restore the old hirl. Well, find her a good home.
We get lucky from time to time
Love the fact that this is a longer video just because I get to spend some more time watching you do your thing, just awesome.
Good luck with your project!
You have done a great job on this 54 Mercury. Think it will make a great restoration. You have done more on this car. Than you have in awhile. Hope it gets a great home. Thank you Mortske for sharing!
Thanks!
I’ve not ever heard that very imaginative but realistic description of a bad fuel tank until now. Thanks. Nope - could’ve went without those smells.
Haha
A Mortske marathon, HECK YEAH !!
Awesome revival video and your patience and dedication is nothing short of amazing, thank you
Thanks for watching Wayne!
It was a really nice car except that every time he wanted to start it - he had to crawl
under and jiggle or tap on the shims on the starter.....but, it always ran. He said that he paid $175 for it - bought it from a girl he knew in high
school. When he went to pay for it, he asked her why she was selling it for only $175 ?? Her reply, "Well....I never had $175 before......" !
Right place at the right time I guess. I've bought cars that folks said weren't ever for sale too.
An extra long one on a rainy Mortske Monday. Outstanding. 👍🏼 Thanks buddy. 👌🏼
Thanks for watching
I had a 55 customline in theUSA service,223 six auto,,rebuilt the engine and ran it forever,,always been a ford man
Happy to see the channels growing! Great content! Thank you
Thanks for watching!
That's a sharp car
I agree!!
Sure is!
You can not beat that style that smarts before internet was epic.
Yea. Three thumbs up. I think duff was puffin the exhaust pipe thinking it was a bong. Got him in the mood. Lol. 😂 already waiting for the next video
oh boy
The body is in pretty good shape for its age and the engine sounds great. Very nice find. Hope it goes to a good home.
Two and a half hours of Mortske! My week is set! My first impression of this car was "it's too nice for Mortske, I wonder who he is fixing it for?" Then I felt bad for doubting you. Someone is going to get a nice survivor car and $4500 is a good deal!
You really did a great job. I've had a '54 Ford for 45 years. Most trouble free car ever.
Thanks 👍
Duff trying to snort those mice out of the tailpipe and your comments had me dying.😂😂
That's a nice Merc. That motor was clean inside. Glad to see you having some luck with a Y block. Thanks 👍
Love the long episode. I get 30 min of Mortske every night for 5 nights! So good!!! She’s a beauty and in amazing condition for its age
Glad you enjoy it!
2 hours and a half of a Mortske & Duff show!!!, thanks!!! i enjoy it while the winter is coming!!!
Our pleasure!
Duff may not have thumbs, but he can suck start a Mercury... handy fella to have around when you have the starter luck that Sir Morticus has. Cool car!!
That spring in the fuel tank looks like the springs they used to put on gas nozzles back in the day. Nice car, great video! 👍
Likely
Well played. Merc-O-Matic is a three speed transmission but when in drive it starts in second. Only goes in first when you select Lo. I have one in my 61 Monterey. It has been a good transmission and with the 352 it’s fast enough for daily duty.
Good to know!
My dad and I watch you every chance we get always cool to see what your working on and it takes my dad back to his childhood/growing up definitely wish this would give him the push to turn wrenches again with me lol
Thanks for watching to you and your father!
I'm 22 years old and i'm from mexico i love your videos
Thanks for watching in Mexico
Fantastic job mortski .that's why you get the big money. every thing on that was top of the line except the hood hinges. The trunk hinges are a work of art. Had a great time. Monday is my favorite day of the week
Good deal! Much better than the other crippled vehicles that usually follow you home! This Mercury is pure class. So glad you and Sir Duff got it running (thanks to some interwebs parts).
Again, thank you Mr. Mortske and Sir Duff to present quality entertainment and repair knowledge. Please don't sell the shop!
Thanks for the kind words!
I love two hour + Mortske videos. That way I don’t have to ration myself self through the week. There is ample video for all seven days.
Glad you enjoy them!
Hi if the hubcaps pop off try this. Just put some duct tape on edge of rim every 6 inch or so. The caps twist off when you brake I love Duff.
Looks like a pretty decent rig! Good thing the engine didn't fight you too hard this time. Looking forward to the next video.
Great job enjoy watching all your shows and lv duff
Thanks so much
the eleven minute mark with Duff ,,sucking the tail pipe had me rolling!!!!
That’s another Mortsky classic moment, slingshot engage with no spark plugs 😂😂😵💫
whoops
I like that you fixed more stuff on this video. Replace the rotted metal, install new tank and exhaust and clean and this Merc becomes a going to town rig.
One of my favorite videos. Amazing. I looked for a fuel pump for my 39 buick. Was cheaper to rebuild it. Got kit off ebay. Saved the 6 volt electric pump for an emergency lol. Thanks for the great video. Gonna watch this one a couple times.
Wish I could find a kit! Much appreciated Harold!
@@MortskeRepair good luck sir. Had my 4th back surgery last Thursday I am hoping to have my buick on the road for spring. I have learned a lot watching you. Thank you for what you do.
I got a 54 Ford customline 3 on the tree with overdrive flathead straight 6 thanks Mr mortske love the merc
Awesome!
Much appreciated for the kind words!
I really like that beautiful old car, made the same year I was born..I love it, give it love it's worth restoring.
I am glad your giving her a little love someone buys her and floors and mounts they will a sweet ride good job like always
Thanks 👍
One of my favorite old videos not just cause I’m a Ford Lincoln, Mercury guy.
Great video as always. Great to see an older car from the 50's being revived. Thanks!!
Thanks Brett!
Interesting
Awesome extended video on Mortske Monday! Never been a Pontiac fan but that car was well built and maintained. It deserves a good home and to be made whole! You should keep it. 👊💪👍🙏
That spring looks like it’s off an old school gas nozzle. Nice job on these revivals!

My parents had twin Montereys (56 models) back in the 60s. My dad had a 4 door, my mom had a 2 door. If I had the money and a way to get to North Dakota, I'd buy it! Great job getting her back on the road Mort! 😎
Those are great cars!
Love that front bumper. That space age jet console control panel is wild too.
Oh no!
Morts, Love watching your videos. This all takes me back to the 60,s and early 70,s when I first got the fever. Lots of stuff you are doing I watched and learned from MY FIL who was a quintessential shade tree mechanic. Thanks for the walk down memory lane and For getting me inspired to get back on my projects. 48 willys pickup old school hot rod. 54 Chevy Convert and 53 chevy Hardtop and Wagon
Our pleasure! Good luck!
Don't expect much from the fuel pump. Dad had a '54 Ford Ranch Wagon Y block V8 and we went through 5 pumps in 5 years.
