This is why I like the setup International 6's had: the oil pump is directly driven off the cam, so the distributor has no gear on it at all, just a slotted shaft. No teeth to mess up or mistime. They also turn the wrong way!

My dad had a 60 Bel Air when we were just tots. It was a straight 6 powerglide. He told us how he spent a weekend cleaning the paint and all the stainless. He loved it! On a cold winter day he started it and ran upstairs to the 2nd floor apartment where we lived at the time to get us and mom and the car was gone when we came back down. He said the police recovered it but it never drove the same. Something with the trans. I'm a Mopar guy but the 60 Chevy (especially 4 door!) holds a special place in my heart because of my dad. I must say I think its great just the way it is - well done sir!!!

2 hours of Duff & Mortske? You're spoiling us. Dad had a '61 with 283/Powerglide. White, red interior if I remember. From what I can recall he bought it for $500 + his 1950 GMC truck (which he paid $50 for) and ended up swapping it for a '58 Mercury Monterey with a 383 & 3 speed that someone had converted to a floor shift. That blue color is beautiful, paint came back nicely with a little attention. Fix it up, make it safe, leave the patina, throw some blankets on the seat and drive it. Thank you for what you do and for sharing these cars & trucks with us. To open that door you need a Slim Jim. This is a tool made out of a thin piece of flat steel about an inch wide with a notch in the side near one end. You slide the Slim Jim down into the door on the out side of the window. You hook the notch around the lever on the catch of the door latch and pull up.
This bypasses both the inner and outer door handles and should open the door.

Awesome find,...I just finished watching the 59 that had the tree grow In beside it,...this one is equally amazing....I was never much for six poppers, had a few...until I got my 62 Chevy II Nova ragtop,....striaght six automatic....i found it sitting in a back yard stripped,.. all the parts in the trunk....well I spent few months restoring it, new top, rug, brakes, rebuilt carb, lots of putty, painted it....drove the hell outta that car....found another one dying in a field just like it, but all original drive train....& kinda worse shape than mine when I got it....I actually had 5...the SS, a 2dr sedan, & a 4dr....all six cyc...man I loved the little buggy, so roomy for its size,...I do wish I could find another.......i eventually sold them all.....but about 10 years latter I saw the first one sittin in a yard again under a tarp....i kept an eye on it for years till I moved away....then 10 years I moved back in the area & found it sittin in a storage yard..in the same town.....I was like holy hell...theres my baby....damn near reverted back to the way I bought it,....it was sad & I cried as I inspected it....amazingly...all my bondo work was intact, like the day I painted it.....incredable....I left a note in it telling this story & offer to buy it back....but never heard a thing....I moved away again, but when I go back Im going to visit it again...hoping it's still there....Id restore it all over again.

It being a 1960 model you'd probably have to leave the radio on for 30 seconds or so till the tubes warm up before you heard anything. That being said, IF you did hear anything it would probably be a loud hum as the old electrolytic capacitors will have leaked or dried out completely by now and the vibrator is probably shot as well. Then there's all the regular capacitors that will leak current as well as they were never designed to last 60+ years and by now the wax will have melted out of them and let moisture in. Tubes themselves rarely go bad. They'll get weaker over time and if the radio was used an excessive amount they may be on the weaker side but ordinarily would still work though not as well as fresh ones. Resistors, it depends on the brand it has in it. Allen Bradley resistors tend to keep their ohms values pretty close to specs as well as old fashioned dog bone resistors. "Roundies" which look like Allen Bradley resistors but with rounded ends instead of AB's sqaured off ends also get leaky over time and will mostly rise in resistance when they go bad. If you ever get a car radio with tubes in it and have it restored though, they pick up stations amazingly well for AM and you'd really be surprised at the distance they'll draw stations in from. I live in Southern Indiana and have picked up stations with a tube car radio from as far away as Toronto, Ontario, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

They stopped using tubes in car radios around 62-63.
Some radios had tubes and transistors. The transistors were used for the audio power amplifier.
The tubes were special space charge types that could operate on 12 volts. No vibrator required.
My mother had a 62 Dodge with a radio like this.
I am not sure if car radios were made using transistors to replace the vibrator.
This was done on 2 way vhf transceivers but maybe not car radios.

Can I just say THANK YOU so much. Your timing is impeccable. I just picked up a 71 C-10 with a 3-on-the-tree last weekend and my shifter is doing exactly what you just showed me how to adjust. As soon as the sun comes up, I'm going to fix my shifter.

  • @OldCarAlley
    @OldCarAlley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

As you may know, on the 235.5 the timing is set by setting the "octane sector", also known as the vacuum advance to zero. There is a ball on the flywheel you line up with a pointer in that hole on the bell housing just above the starter, using a timing light. You loosen the screw that holds the octane sector to the distributor and turning the distributor until that ball mark and pointer line up.... that's TDC. Tighten the clamp back up on the octane sector. Then you can adjust the marks on the octane selector to the mark on the casting where the assembly bolts down to the timing you wish to set it at. The 235.5 spec is TDC or 0º.
I "think" the three speed gear box is a Muncie 318..... that's what's in my 59 Bel Air anyway. Often Chevrolet used a 4:11gear with the overdrive trans. Chevrolet used the 3:55 ratio on six stick with out overdrive, 3:36 on the six automatics, 283 automatics and 348 sticks. The 3:08 was used on 348 automatics..... automatics being the Powerglide or Turboglide.
That is a very solid 1960 Impala! Most have zero undercarriage left. It cleaned up surprisingly well!

@@MortskeRepair Chevrolet used a tag cut in different ways to show the axles ratio. I don't remember the shapes off the top of my head, but some had a hole in them, or an edge cut off or two edges cut off, it's kinda an odd way, but I find there always spot on. The shop manual should show the tag shape. Myself, I just go by the engine transmission set up to know what the ratio should be, but anyone could order any of the ratios with any engine trans combos.... like if you wanted to tow a trailer as an example....

That was an amazing video Mortske. I could watch you and Duff him of course without thumbs working on old relics for hours. Nothing better in my opinion than the basics. Points, plugs and condenser. Great job getting the old 1960 girl running. Duff definitely knew something he wasn't telling you. This was a great way to spend the afternoon relaxing after being part of accident in my 98 Chevy crew cab 3500 last Wednesday. A distracted idiot (cell phone) blew a stop sign broadsiding my truck. Caught it on the right rear door and cab corner and shoved the bed in to the frame and bent the right rear rim. The guy's 2016 Sentra literally disintegrated. Had my arm riding on the door with the window open because it's still in the 80's here. Injured the arm and shoulder some. Of course the guy had basic high risk insurance that is offering nothing for my truck but given it was repainted this year ($3500) and the AC completely rebuilt ($1200) in parts alone and lots of other upgrades like a new radiator and all new brakes totaling almost 6K they have no choice but to up their bid or get the crap sued out of them but the estimate to fix it is $5100. Bought the truck new. They will fix it. Looking forward to the next vintage tin rescue video. Thanks.

You have a statute of limitations on filing the lawsuit. If you don't have a lawyer by now.....think about how well skilled the insurance company lawyer is at getting you to forget the statute of limitations. Lawyers work on a contingent fee: you don't pay anything to settle.

    Hey Mortske,
You can use the flywheel to find TDC , down by the starter there is a hole with a pointer , line the pointer up with the BB mark on the flywheel and you are at TDC on #1 or #6 cylinder depending which dot you line up. There should be two on the flywheel, worthless info for you.

I know patina is all the rage, but the blue paint is in such nice condition I would be tempted to paint the top white. To my eye there is not enough of the original white left to really pull off the patina look. The car must have been stunning when it was new. Would love to see the two tone close to how it looked on Day 1
