  • A good old friend of mine informed me that the owner of a 1963 Buick Riviera that was rotting away in a barn was ready to part with it. And I do love me a big old Buick, especially a first generation Riviera! These cars were a nice combination of sport and luxury and were regularly equipped with bucket seats, power windows, console, tilt, cruise, A/C and many other options to boot. So lets see if we can get this first year model back on the road after sitting for 27 years! This car has been SOLD!! As always, thanks for watching!

I've been there many times myself and you always feel like the world's most intelligent and powerful man when it finally happens. When I was 18 I bought a $500 car (a 1990 Dodge Spirit 2.5 turbo) from the dealership that I worked at and it wasn't running. My uncle kept telling me, "you'll never get that thing running!" An hour later I checked the timing belt and it was off a few teeth, so I took it off, lined everything up, reinstalled the belt, turned the key, and she fired right up. I drove that car for quite a while before I took a sharp turn in boost and the oil sloshed to one side of the oil pan (that's almost shaped like a cone) and it snapped a connecting rod. It was a 2.5 turbo I engine and it had 170k miles on it, so it was fairly weak to begin with. I scrapped it. Those engines only made 150 HP and the turbo was a TINY Mitsubishi TE04H. I bought a larger Dodge Daytona T3 turbo for it, but it blew up before I could modify it. I'd LOVE to have another one to tinker with.

Not bad for car most consider their grandpa's car. I love the 1959 Buick Invicta/LaSabre with the 401 Nailhead and Turbine Transmissions were so smooth, couldn't feel them shift.

We had lots of cars growing up as my dad was a good mechanic. Every time we got ready to cross country from the West Coast back to northern Minnesota to see his relatives he looked around for about 3 months for 55 Buick. He loved those Buicks. Apparently they were 322 cubic inch nailheads in the centuries. What a road car! I remember helping him shine them up, he would put on four new tires and we'd had cross country. Those were the days when you could stand up on the back seat and the police wouldn't stop you.

The Riviera was really something when it arrived for '63. Almost like buying a customized car from the factory. I thought the '65 was the cleanest iteration of the first 3 years with the tail lights in the bumper, but there is always a soft spot for the original.

Very cool! I grew up in one of these cars (‘63, single 4, 425ci. gold with white interior, all the options). Mom sold it just before I got my drivers license, guess I understand now. The 67 Chevelle with a 250 six and auto trans was probably a safer option 🙂.

I had a ‘68 Wildcat 2-door hardtop with a 430 and glass packs. Best sounding car when you let off the gas, torque for miles and comfortable. If I had only kept it. Those old Buicks were nice. Always thought the Riviera was the best looking car.

Cool old Riviera! Good thing you happened to get one with LSD! Find a 64 or 65 with the hidden headlights for an encore. Looking at that front drum brake, you can see that Buick was trying hard to make it stop well without front discs. Yeah, the body is more than just a bit "Chewy" but it still looks good!

Mortske, you are taking me back to when I first started working or cars. I went to the General Motors Training Center and learned as much as I could about GM Cars. When I got my sheeps skin I took it to my local Buick sealer and got a job. One of the first cars I worked was a 64 Riveria. What a jewel it was. I thought I knew everything. I got schooled quickly. Good luck with that get. BTH, just take that Carter AFB off there and rebuild it from the start. They are JUNK! LOL.
