Oh Ruan, what a fabulous coat, I love the colour and the beautiful lining. If you get tired of wearing it right side out you can always wear it outside in. Happy sewing .🧵🪡🇦🇺
Coat is lovely, I also have a “thing” for coats and jackets, my mother used to say… you have only got one back to cover … how many coats do you need.. ! Little tip on woven interfacing. If you need a bit of stretch interfacing, cut the woven interfacing on the bias and you have stretch. Apart from the plastic element for hand making, woven interfacing makes such a difference to a hand made garment. Thank you for taking the time to share
Your coat is a real eye catcher, absolutely superb.I love the combination of the main fabric with that stunning lining, fabulous.I like what you said about reaching out to people if one encounters a problem with a pattern.l have always found that people in the sewing community are so friendly and happy to help each other. Thank you Ruan.🌹🌹🦊
Great coat - Ive made 2 now. Definitely size down. Confused by the sizing same as you! And it took me forever to work out the diagram for attaching the lining!
Beautiful version😊 and that really suits you! I loved the look of the coat and was thinking of doing it, but it would be my first one and after your advice I would start with other pattern. Thank you 😊
I am in the same boat as you. I had a similar coat in my 20’s and just loved it. Thinking I may be brave and start with the shorter style which would use less fabric, pick up in a sale and get my head around the instructions. I too could look at another coat … but I love this one ❤
Love your Nova coat, fabulous colour. I have made two now one for me and one for my daughter . Mine is a dark grey but seeing yours has inspired me to make a brighter coloured one for this coming winter ( I am in NZ) I have a beautiful cobalt blue wool mix in my stash I think I might use. I must admit I struggled with the instructions around the hem line and attaching the lining but got there in the end.
Thanks for the mention! Happy to inspire how I sew labels. I think I started the tiny zig zag so the edges were all covered and soft. The coat looks great- that color is stunning!
Your Nova is stunning Ruan. What a beautiful fabric combination 😍 I can see why you are so giddy about it 😃 You have inspired me to give it a go and cut my pattern out!
No wonder you’re chuffed with your Nova coat Ruan it’s stunning, I think it’s the best one I’ve seen so far. The colour is gorgeous and suits you so much. 😍😍
Great coat pattern , I bought it several years ago when it was called the Sapporo coat and made the smallest size but it was still was very roomy ,the pattern sizes then was XXS/XS S/M L/XL which was very vaugue, don't know if the sizing has changed to include smaller sizes but it is still one of my favourite coats , I made it in a navy blue mohair that I'd had in my stash for over thirty years !! Knew it would come in handy one day !
Your sewing teacher was nicer than mine. All I got was a tut because I was so petit she had to do major adjustments every time. At least I didn't get locked in the cupboard like some others. She was a nightmare. I love the coat ❤❤
Loving it! Love the lining is so pretty. It looks reasonably simple as far as coat patterns go. It looks amazing on you. Thanks for such a great review 🤩
Hi Ruan great review of the nova coat, i have recently made it and also loved the contstuction of it and the style, i got stuck at exactly the same place you did but i still didnt work it out. I had unpick my hand sewing because i think i sewed the wrong pieces together. I just left this bit out and it didnt seem to be a problem but like you i dont like to be defeated, next time i make this coat I'll have another look to see if i can work it out. 🤔 stunning coat.❤
What a beautiful coat Ruan! I love the color and really appreciate you going through some of the details with us. I have yet to make a coat, need to find other fabrics besides wool due to itchiness, and think the design of the Nova or Sapporo coat is stellar.. xx Karen
Thanks for your review. I was excited about this pattern but read the instructions and then abandoned it. Maybe I will come back to it. Yours is fabulous and PINK!
Beautiful coat. That colour suits you so well! Papercut have photo tutorial sewalongs on their website that can be helpful. I used that when I made mine!
Love the coat! I have the pattern and have never sewn a coat before, I read that this would be a good one to start with. I loved your thorough review, thank you so much. P.S. I am a Lancashire girl, although I now live in Canada. Loved hearing you say “chuffed”, took me back in time!
I love your coat! And Sara's too - I'm watching both of them 😘 I've got the old Sapporo pattern - before it was redone - and from chatting with others that have made it, it looks like the sleeves were lengthened and there is the option of long or short. So it is possible they've redone the instructions. The sleeve finishes up differently. I was going to just alter the sleeve pieces to go with what the change was, but I'm getting really close to just getting the new pattern. 😜 Along with having all those changes already made, I would have both versions. I like your choice of fabric, too! "'Cause I am li-ving in an Imperial World, and I am an Imperial Girl" 😆😆 Great video ❤❤Thanks!
Your Nova coat is beautiful Ruan and looks fabulous on you. Thankyou for such an informative and detailed vlog which has made me wonder if I need another coat.
Coat looks lovely on you and colour really suits you 😍. I've been sewing 45yrs 😮and always used to read 1 sentence at a time, now I usually wing it 😂 and don't read anything, but that's what unpickers are for right? 😂
The coat looks fabulous, Ruan & I loved the video. I've been tempted to make this coat & after listening to your tips and comments, now feel ready to go ahead. Enjoy wearing yours, it really looks lovely on you x
Brilliant review, I am two years into my sewing journey and never attempted a coat. May try the Tessuti one you mentioned for my first if more straight forward. Colour on you is gorgeous 😊❤
It is absolutely stunning Ruan, I love everything about it! I have a thing about coats too cos I spend a lot of time walking the dog and hanging out at the park with my son. if you’re out and about it’s what people see so why not put as much effort into that as what you’re wearing underneath?! Xx
Thank you so much for this review … you look amazing … and that colour! I was waiting to hear what size you made as from research it does come up over sized. Being petite height got to get this right. Love this coat but and you have inspired me to make the jacket before the end of the year even though an advanced beginner. I am either brave or foolish but I will have fun whilst scratching my head … Wish me luck!
Beautiful Nova. I love this pattern and have made it a few times. I’m going to size down for more structured fabric as I used very drapes fabrics for the last ones. Love the pattern and your version.
Your coat is lovely Ruan. I am fairly new to sewing, having made soft furnishings, toys etc previously. I have invested in a dress form and have made a few T&TB garments and have picked up the Hovea Jacket by Megan Nielsen pattern. It looks a bit like your coat but probably a lot easier to make for me. I love the construction of pattern pieces and all the different fabrics, I am determined to make my own clothes. I just get stuck with all the sizes and grading, so I tend to go with my measurements and what the finished garment would be. I trace all my main patterns which is time consuming but the patterns are pricey so its worth it. All a learning curve but I love it. Purchased an overlocker also and its a dream! I sew slowly and look at the pattern instructions then hunt for tutorials. Could you recommend any books for a new sewer? Love your channel x
I love the drape. My version (before the re-launch and only one size range) is rather stiff. I used quilted curtains 😅 . I'm pear shaped which doesn't lend itself to the shape really. Also, it's white so I have embarked on covering it with embroidery. It's a fascinating construction, you have to suspend believe and go with the instructions 😂😂🎉
Your coat is fabulous - I just finished mine this month and am so pleased too. I made mine in boiled wool with a cotton sateen lining but I did make a calico toile first to check the size which helps if you are uncertain and gives you a very quick run through of the pattern instructions and is a cheap way to practise. I also used a tutorial by Flying Bobbins [paid for subscription I have] and the demonstration is so clear. It is my first coat but I'm so encouraged to make more. Your coat is such a beautiful colour.
Love the coat and the colour it looks super comfy, I have the Oslo coat pattern, all I need to do is buy the fabric, one of these days. But I really love your coat it really suits you. 😍🏴
Looks fab, perfect fabric combo too ❤ and good review too. I never even noticed the red dashes when I made mine, although my pattern is the Sapporo so may well be different
Beautiful coat and what a color! I’ve had this coat on my list for a year or so and some beautiful boiled wool to make it. If I recall you are fairly tall. Did the sleeve lengths work for you and did they come to your wrists? I’m sure I’ll need to take pattern measurements but am curious how you found it? You and I have close to same measurements with mine being perhaps an inch larger in bust and waist. May wind up making a quick muslin as I surely don’t want a huge mistake on this beautiful and expensive boiled wool. Great job!
Love love love your coat.. I'll get my Nova pattern out today.. Thank you for sharing your make.. I can hardly wait to make mine
Oh Ruan, what a fabulous coat, I love the colour and the beautiful lining. If you get tired of wearing it right side out you can always wear it outside in. Happy sewing .🧵🪡🇦🇺
Great idea!
Oh no 😮 I do like clear instructions and a sewalong/tutorial is even better 🤩
Yes I was hoping there would be a tutorial on TH-cam but I managed it in the end!
@@theyorkshiresewgirl you did an amazing job 🤩🥳

That sleeve looks massive, so it would be totally non-binding to wear when driving 🎉🎉🎉. That’s just fabulous! Love the color and fabric of yours❤
Yes! Thank you!

Great coat - Ive made 2 now. Definitely size down. Confused by the sizing same as you! And it took me forever to work out the diagram for attaching the lining!
Glad it wasn’t just me 🤪

I’ve made the Oslo…it’s a lovely make 😊
Oh that’s brilliant to hear 😊
Love the coat and great thorough review. I have been tempted to make it. I’m not a fan of cutting out on single fabric.. guess I’m just impatient!
I hear you 😂
Looks fab, perfect fabric combo too ❤ and good review too. I never even noticed the red dashes when I made mine, although my pattern is the Sapporo so may well be different

The sleeves were great for me but yes a cheap toile would be a great idea!
Love it! The lining is gorgeous too!
