When the Victoria and Albert (V&A) museum had the Mary quant display they included a free pattern on their website for a Mary Quant style dress that could easily be a pinafore style dress or add sleeves to it as a fake layered pinafore dress. I think it’s still there so worth a look. ❤

I love the apron pinafore. My body shape changed so much after my surgery. I struggled with this mentally and emotionally. I call my shape cylinder because my bust and waist are the same size. Once I got over myself, I started to just experiment. I make what I like and buy clothes that make me happy 😊. I must say I look “absolutely marvelous” 🤩. I love your videos. They’re thoughtful, inspiring and fun. Thank you for sharing! Your friend Diane ❤

I love a pinafore, comfort over style for me! Big pockets and chunky corduroy, Helen;s Closet York Pinafore, it’s not the classic style but it’s definitely ‘tummy friendly’ and I’m an apple too (straight torso!) I also like Made 4 Mermaids Juniper ‘jumper’ that’s great in a stretchy cord. (Love, love, love the joyous sounds in the background, thank you!)

Hi Ruan, I like the Merchant & Mills Whittaker pinafore especially after watching Ruth McIntyre's vlog when she made her lovely ginger cord one. I had some chocolate brown corduroy in my stash and have it cut out ready to sew. Must get a wiggle on.

Pinafores are at the top of my sewing list. Chronic illness has meant I've needed to rethink my wardrobe, so although I'm not a diamond shape, I don't want anything tight around the middle. Top of my pinafore list is the Petrichor by Sew Liberated, I also have their Penny pinafore which also fits the bill. Helen's Closet York is not a style I'm drawn to, but the amount of ways it can be hacked into something I would wear persuaded me to buy it! I've tried TaTB Cleo and also hated how it looked on me 💜

I made the York pinafore twice! I have a Mom tummy and at 70 I'm trying to work with it, not just ignore it. So! One York in a medium weight cord and I fell in love. The second one is in a med to heavy weight linen with a large scale floral print. They are just awesome. So much in fact that I had decided to look for some other ideas. Your video's timing couldn't be better!

Hi Ruan. There are some lovely little details in these dresses. But nowadays, I'd hate struggling with fiddiley stuff like tying a bow in the middle of my back or sitting on buttons from a back button placket. 🙄 A-line dresses can be very flattering when you have a defined waist but I'd caution against using a too-structured fabric, as this pronounces the shape. Since you want more ease in the tummy area, I actually like the pattern that was more narrow at the bottom. I'm sure what ever you choose, will be fab. BTW, bib style garments look silly going over my chest too, so I liked the deeper V dresses. Have fun choosing!

  • @evasaker2476
    @evasaker2476 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Nice pattern suggestions! I fell in love with the first on with the bow at the back 😍 Must make that I feel. I love pinafores and my most made is drafted from a simple A-line sleeveless top that I just lengthened and put a button placket down the front (and patch pockets of course) My second favourite is York, but I have made it more A-lined as I don’t like the tulip shape. I also adjusted the front neckline to something in between the two options. I love it now and plan on making more. I also have the tummy issue so these suggestions work very well for that. I also have a large bust but York works for that too.

Thank you so much for this vlog! I am exactly the same, made the TATB Cleo and, even though other people told me I looked great, I just didn't feel right in it. Felt like a Tellytubby hahaha. I've had babycord fabric in my stash for literally years to make a pinafore, maybe the TATB Olive, but been so scared in case I didn't like it again.
This has inspired me to give it a go, (or at least a toile!), and I adore the Milton Pinafore, will definitely give that one a go!

I made the Milton pinafore from a thick brown linen and it was quite easy. Although I'm a smaller size, I do have a larger bust, so I ended up using the bodice of larger size band and the skirt from the smaller. Worked like a charm!

Hi Ruan, loved this video. I love the steel pinafore, I’ve made a few and find them a flattering fit over my large tum, I’ve done a button strap version too as the ties are a great feature but a bit unsightly under a cardigan. It looks good over nice blouses too with plenty of room for big sleeves, I’ve made a coordinating fpc patina which looks nice. The penny pinafore from sew liberated is nice as well with some pleated pockets on the back. Looking forward to seeing what you make

What an awesome video!! I loved every speck of it!!!
I found the stitch sisters during lockdown, and they did an awesome video on the Pippi Pinafore by Jennifer Lauren Handmade. I bought it straight away. I am still eager to make it. It has nice shaping over the chest. It does have a waistband, but the skirt flares out, so I like the silhouette and still want to try it out.
I was so excited when I recently heard you talking about the diamond body shape. I related to that instantly. My proportions are very similar to yours. Being a diamond is different than being an apple.

I love these videos! I have wanted a pinafore for some time . A couple of years ago I was talking about them and my daughter was horrified. I said everyone is making them. Her reply was ,"in England!". I wish sewing was as popular here in the USA . I'm quite the novelty, especially with my granddaughter's school, where the question of the day is "Another Grandma made outfit?" You've convinced me that maybe a grandma can get away with wearing a pinefore.

I’m in the US also. I’m 72 years young and I still wear pinafores. It just has to be the right style pinafore. And I prefer Midi or Maxi length (can’t be bothered with worrying about how I sit, bend over, etc.) I have great-grandchildren that I need to play in the floor with. LOL!!!

Great vlog Ruan...so helpful. I'm not really a denim girl and already have Not Your Daughter's Jeans that fit (including my tummy with stretch) and come in fun colors. So...I was disappointed with denim in our heavy Beyond the Pink Door subscription box. Still, Andrea always gives us great quality fabrics and I don't want to waste it just like I didn't want to waste the orange corduroy...not my color but great quality fabric. I started thinking about using it for bags ( no...too much) or pinafores and then thought a pinafore wouldn't look great on me. I think the Helen's Closet one might be ok. The neckline is low enough and scooped that I could wear something bright and fun and more my style underneath. Love the pockets and I know her instructions are awesome. Appreciate you and all this research. xx Karen

I really love all my Apron pinafores, especially the denim one. I added extra jeans buttons to make it more adjustable. Hangs beautifully, and the shape of the panels and pockets gives a nice hourglass figure not matter what your shape. Made one for my 90 year old mum who wears it each winter. And she’s always elegant and inspiring.
I’ve made numerous Yorks. I do bring in the waist slightly and straighten the side seams as the cocoon shape is not for me. I made it an A line. I made one in cord in the shorter length (way too short for me as a tall girl)… and added a horizontal panel of cord. Mum liked it so much I made it for her too, and my sister in law too. All in navy cord with bias tape in orange 😂 As this is such a quick sew, and not too fabric hungry I’d recommend making the York first.

I really am loving the look of the Fibre mood one - reminds me of the Ora Pinafore from Soften Studio. I'm currently pregnant and think I could get away with that one, plus I love a deep V!

Great vlog! I recently made the free Tiana’s Closet Violet Pinafore Dress and it was a pretty simple sew and can be made reversible (which I made). Sizing was a challenge and it turned out huge but it was a pretty good dupe for a Nobody’s Child one and would try it again but size down.

I have a sway back that accentuates my toosh and also makes me look rounder that a wine barrel 😂 Id love a flat back but nope... Also having had 3 children has left me with a little mum tum so throw that in with a sway back has me avoiding pinafores and overalls. Hahahaha we all love to hear kids having a good time, never apologise. 💕💕

Thank you for the round up. I have similar struggles but would like to make one. I am leaving towards the Seamwork Dani, which is similar to the Peppermint magazine dress.

Recommend the Studio Tunic from Sew Liberated. Falls away from the body, but I’ve made 2 of them cuz of the pockets. Big pockets! Anyway, you can’t go wrong, I think it will look just fine. Some lovely pinafores you’ve outlined. I also made a pinafore from a vintage 70’s pattern I liked a lot. Was popular then, too.

Great research Ruan. I feel similarly about close fitting clothes as I keep bloating. I have the York pinafore so may try that but years ago I thought I’d make the Cocoon dress by Simple sew as a pinafore in cord. It takes very little fabric and that sleeveless version could work well. 😊

Paper Theory Patterns in NZ have just released the Ray Pinafore. Features top stitching, adjustable straps & 70’s vibes.

I loved this video. I have also been wondering about a pinafore. My shape is more a square 😂. I think I’ll try the fibre mood one to start, love the idea of the deep v’s I’ve come across the video just this month Jan 25. Have you made one yet? Love your vlogs etc. from a fan down under in Tasmania !!

I have 2 Sew Liberated patterns on my to sew list: the Studio Tunic and the penny pinafore.
They might fit your bill too.

Great vlog! It really got me thinking about preconceived ideas on what I think suits me and what doesn’t. I have always been fairly hour glass shaped but now in peri menopause it’s become more ⛄️ snowman shaped 🤭🤭🤭. I struggle with the thicker waist line and I always focus on it and think everything makes me look huge. At a standard RTW size 16 it’s only just really into plus sized.
Anyway what I was going to say was that when it comes down to design, there’s not that much separating a slip dress from a pinafore (or jumper dress in the US). So maybe you could look at your preferred slip dress designs as to what look you prefer on you and use it as a guide? I guess you could use a slip pattern in a warmer fabric and size up a smidge… being careful of shoulder width and strap placement. It worth a dive into at least.
Ok, cup of tea time… I’m off to melt a bit 🤣😂🤣🤪 ⛄️

Some great ideas 😊. I know what you mean about how you feel about certain styles. I’ve bought the Patterns Room Ivy Dress which is very similar to the Fibre Mood one so it will be interesting to see what you think. Also watch this space with Sew Over It in the next few days 😉 xx

I like the look of the Soften Studio Ora Pinafore dress, but I haven't made it. It long with a V neck front and back, and it has pockets. 😀

I absolutely know how self conscious you can be about that tummy bulge even tho my shape has changed a lot over the last year so fantastic idea for a vlog series, Alex judge has made the Steele pinafore, she wore it to sew down dewsbury and I promptly bought it because it’s bloody gorgeous

Good selection of pattern options but as I seldom wear dresses I think I would probably make dungarees instead. Look forward to seeing what you decide to make.😊
