The first game I always sought out was the original, vector-based Star Wars game 🥰

I heard that the main reason on why Haunted Castle is such a major departure from the Castlevania series is because it started out as a completely different arcade game during the first stages of development, up until Konami completely retooled it into a Castlevania game
Certainly. The project was initially being developed as an original horror action game unrelated to the Castlevania series. However, at some point around six months into development, the game was in bad shape, quality and schedule-wise, with the team being short-staffed. Konami's higher-ups ordered people who were working on a completely different project (a racing game called "Hot Chase") to help out with this one; among them was Masaaki Kukino, who attained the role of main designer. As the graphics were considered to be too low on quality, it was decided by the company to redraw all the assets in one month, along with making the game in the style of the Akumajō Dracula/Castlevania series, which Kukino speculates was simply chosen for name recognition value only. The tight schedule left no room for any big additions or changes, although the concept of the crumbling bridge in the last stage was conceived during that stage of development. In a later interview, Kukino said that time for debugging was also needed, which resulted in the staff having no more room to make changes and improvements to the balancing. Furthermore, at that time the staff members from Hot Chase had returned to their own project already.

Hey @Sega Lord X, would it be possible to do a video called "Sega on PlayStation 1"? I did saw there was a video mentioned that he found two Sega titles released for the PSX in Japan. Puyo Puyo Tsu and an obscured title called MiniMoni. Shakatto Tambourine! Dapyon! that was never been created for other Sega Consoles.
I believe puyo puyo was still developed by compile at the time and wasn’t purchased by sega yet but I can be wrong. With mini moni I believe that was a late ps1 game and sega already called it quits in the console market at that point and already was a third party developer.

Great topic for a video Sega Lord. I was also born in the 70's so I'm really intrigued as to what your opinions are for this list. All I have to do now is un pause the video 👌
out of the thousands of arcade games I've played while developing MAME, Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory has remained in my top 5, it's one of my all time favourites, so kinda surprised to see it here.
It's not underrated at all. Game has been properly rated by the community: It's a game with interesting gameplay and design ideas, dragged down by a very rushed and conflictive development. It's VERY unbalanced, it has a lot of really stupid crap that shouldn't be there (as if the game didn't go through any beta testing), heavy recycling from the SNK side (without any update), 50% of the backgrounds were horrible, the music was forgettable... and I could go on.
I actually loved SVC Chaos. I thought it was super cool to see SF characters in that art style. You're right though it's far from perfect. Felt dated even when it was released
I'd say it was better than Capcom vs. SNK 1 but inferior to Capcom vs. SNK 2. Having said that, at least SNK delivered on its half of a crossover, which is more than you can say for Namco with Tekken vs. Street Fighter. When's that coming out again, Namco?
@@jessragan6714 cvs 2 is the GOAT so it's hard to compare anything to that. Easily my favorite for the gamecube version introducing me to a ton of snk characters
@@666slateran666 You're right, it's terrific. Possibly the best 2D fighting game ever, and certainly the most full-featured. I was crushed that the Xbox version didn't come to either the 360 or the Xbox One.
Wow, hold on there. Some of that B-roll footage at the end looked intriguing. Akuma fighting some guy with a sword. Some googling later and apparently that's SNK Chaos? Neat. Accidental new game discovery. :-P
Donkey Kong 3 is pretty fun in my book. As a weird shooter instead of a platformer, it's definitely different, but I never regret giving it a play. Could use one or two more stages, though.
Rastan 2 and arcade castlevania look so much alike in regards of how chunky the gfx are and how slow they play, that it is as if the same team developed them...
Great topic! I didn't expect to see SVC Chaos here, since so many people don't even know it existed. Decent game game but OH BOY are those boss fights a little too much.
It's usually the other way round' when the Arcade game comes to console it's usually a let down in some cases. I enjoyed it and would subscribe for more of these videos. You're the best segalordx!
Great video as ever 🙂 Agreed SVC Chaos is just an ok game especially compared to the previous entries. SVC Plus & SVC Super Plus are slightly better I play those occasionally.
The AI and the balancing issues hurt the most. There are some fighters that can use just a move or two and dog you out unless you know what you are doing.
@@SegaLordX Agreed especially the AI part, one of the most unbalanced fighting games i played, i hated the fact that it lacked air guards especially given the choice of certain playable characters, also no advanced blocking feature & more. Garou is my favourite fighting game different calibre compared to this mess.
@Green Koopa - I actually don't have any issues beating it. But using some of the weaker cast is tough in multiplayer or the higher difficulty settings.
@@SegaLordX do you think, like I do, that SVC Chaos is a game prime for the modding and homebrew scenes to go though and turn into the classic it has the potential to be?
Holy shit dude, the frequency of ads popping up in this is seriously affecting my enjoyment of the actual content. I'm just shy of the 10mins mark and the video's been interrupted by 2 back-to-back adverts 4 times so far!
I really enjoyed this video! Half the games you mentioned, I'd seen and also felt disappointed. It's nice to see this collection because I kind of forgot about them as soon as I shuffled away from the cabinet.
Loved the video, I think it would be great to expand to consoles/portables! I know there are a bunch of well known examples but I bet you can find us some lesser known ones too.
There's a Polygon retrospective on Capcom vs SNK, which mentions SvC Chaos briefly, but weirdly has more screenshots of it than the Capcom CvS games. I thought it was really funny how the comments were in awe over how good the SvC Chaos screens were, thinking it was the Capcom game. As hard as people were on it at the time, it may have aged the best visually.
I always loved the theme of DK3. In the jungle, trying to knock him into a beehive, while swatting away all the other jungle bugs. Makes perfect sense in a game about fighting a giant gorilla.
Being born in the 70's myself we are the generation were we have seen gaming in diapers to what we are experiencing right now, what a time to be born!!!

Great video! Someone made a patch to greatly improve the slow down on Metal Slug 2. Would it be MS 3 is on the MS X engine with the order they were released?
I actually liked Donkey Kong 3. As a kid I was bad at the original, but i could get past the first 3 stages of the arcade game of Donkey Kong 3. So i have a soft spot for it.
Such a fantastic time to witness the rise of a new entertainment medium, sad younger generations don't get this treatment. Every second day something new to discover, loved it and still miss those days where gaming was pure nerd stuff.
I love Donkey Kong 3. 😍 It's not as good as 1 & 2, but it's a nice little game in its own right. It's not a bad game by any means, but quite different from the first 2. I can play it any day, and do play it from time to time on my Switch.
Heh never thought about VF that way... if they skipped the Kids version, they could have been working on VF3... thus all VF games would be pushed up in the schedule and... we might have VF6 now. 😩
We’re about the same age with a lot of the same experiences growing up going to arcades. I absolutely loved Donkey Kong 3. Easily my favorite of the 3 in the arcades. Civilization peaked in the 80s, so glad I was a teen during that time
DK3 is really a shooter instead of a platformer. If you approach it that way, it really is a fun game :) I have all three DK's in a DK Jr cabinet, and Jr is my favorite of the trio.
I love Donkey Kong 3 and have the Arcade version on my Switch and the NES version on my 2DS. It's such a fun game that gets a lot of unfair hate because it's so different from the first two games.
As someone who loves Donkey Kong 3 I knew going in that it would be on this list. Totally agree that they should have called it something else. Great video!
Rastan 2! I remember seeing that in the arcades and feeling exactly the same as you did. Weird art direction. The main character looked like he has to go for a number 2.
Haunted Castle is a huge hunka. I hate how Simon walks like he shit himself. I get that it was still a few years away from the true Castlevania classics, like 3, 4 on the SNES, and Bloodlines, but the control on Haunted Castle and the insane difficulty just scuttles what could have been an all time classic.
I have a honorable mention for this list, Ikari Warriors 3. There series went from beloved shoot 'em up to abysmal wierd eight way rotation joystick of death that had an insatiable appetite for tour hard earned quarters. There is no "A" for effort for that game.
To think that Donkey Kong and Mario would have never existed, if Nintendo had managed to get permission to use the characters from the Popeye cartoons, on that first DK game. Which was supposed to be a Popeye game. That's why Pauline looks like Olive Oyl. And Donkey Kong was a replacement for Bluto. Videogame History does have its epic moments as well. In which a small, even negative detail, can change things drastically, forever and for the better. Later on Sony benefited from the Game Gods as well, and Nintendo got a taste of its own bad karma ahah.
That is an interesting tidbit. Nintendo eventually did get the Popeye license, must have been due to the success of Donkey Kong. I wonder how long it took them to come up with the concepts for that one.
I actually skipped Metal Slug 2 and had played the X version instead as I had heard about the horrible slowdown in 2. It looks nearly unplayable in some instances and looks to really ruin the flow of the game. That is really a shame. I assume time constraints and budget had a hand in why SNK didn't go back to optimize the original release.
i do remember seeing a professor pac-man once when i was a kid. i read once that only 400 were made for a test to see if they would do good & if so more would of been made but luckily it failed miserably so no more were made & around 200 of those test cabs were converted to pac-land.
For Sega specifically; I can think of... Super Monkey Ball 2, SMB Deluxe, SMB Banana Mania (best since Deluxe), Virtua Fighter 5, Wonder Boy 3: Dragon's Trap remake, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi, Sega Rally 2 (Dreamcast), Typing of the Dead (Dreamcast/PS2), House of the Dead 3 (Wii/XBox/Playstation 3), House of the Dead 4 (Playstation 3), OutRun 2 (Xbox), and After Burner Climax (XBox 360/Playstation 3).
Good to hear your thoughts on an interesting topic, as usual. I definitely agree with you on Virtua Fighter Kids being pointless for the most part. I realize the title means it is for kids, but it's still weird seeing that old man in super deformed style all kiddie looking. Metal Slug 2 is a good starter entry in the series. It's the easiest one by far since they limited the chaos to reduce the slowdown. Though it's not nearly as much as part two, I was surprised how much slowdown is in the first game too. I've long suspected that Nazca just didn't know the Neo Geo and 68000 hardware well enough for those first two entries, having come from doing GunForce for Irem on boards using the V30 CPU. At least they got the optimization down after Slug 2. As for SvC Chaos, it's definitely flawed, but I have a soft spot for it. I had issues with Capcom's Capcom vs. SNK games too. I just loved the SNK style from that time. Seeing the game on the Neo Geo felt right to me. I really loved the SNK versions of the Capcom sprites, though, to be fair, Capcom's sprites were good too, and I wasn't a fan of their Alpha and SF3 style. I actually wanted the game to play even more like King of Fighters than it does. I liked a lot of the character interactions. I also like the boss concepts. Athena was easier to figure out than the Arremer. But, there's no denying it;s flawed. It really is a shame it was in development when SNK was having all those problems. I think it would have been even better if it was done sooner.
I think the arcade brought with it greater expectations. You've got bigger, better hardware, and naturally you think that leads to a bigger, better experience. Usually that happens, but even in arcades, there were duds, and dud sequels. A good example is Time Pilot '84, which was a sequel without its original designer, where you were permanently trapped in a dismal, repetitive future. No thanks!
When it comes to home consoles, computers, and handheld sequels of IPs that began their life on arcades, I can think of: Super Monkey Ball Adventure (yes, the series began as Monkey Ball on the arcade) Super Double Dragon (ironically, there are technically two different fourth installments; this being the earlier one) Tekken 4 (not necessarily unplayable, but there were unpopular decisions made with it) Dead or Alive 6 (likely killed the series) Bloody War 4 (killed the series) Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite ("Who cares about the X-Men?! They're just features!") Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns (thankfully retconed by the real Strider 2) Street Fighter V (vanilla release version) The King of Fighters XII Samurai Shodown Zen Space Harrier 2 Mortal Kombat Armageddon Soul Calibur 5 (nearly killed the series and Patroklos himself causes the original timeline to have a literal bad ending) Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Cruis'n (2007) Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation (not all that bad, but not as good as some of the past installments) Ace Combat Assault Horizon Bubble Bobble Revolution Paperboy 2
I remember reading somewhere that the point of VF Kids was facial animation exercise for AM2 but ended up turning the exercise into a whole game (VF Kids).
@@SegaLordX considering they they animations were sprite based while 3D was clearly the future, yeah, I can definitely see that point. It wouldn’t necessarily help that much with animating in 3D for the likes of VF3 and Shenmue.

SVC Chaos is fun, if weird. I enjoy Violent Ken especially!
Great topic for a video Sega Lord. I was also born in the 70's so I'm really intrigued as to what your opinions are for this list.
All I have to do now is un pause the video 👌
I'm glad you didn't mention Sonc the Fighters, because that oddball game is a rare gem!
I liked it a bit, as well.
out of the thousands of arcade games I've played while developing MAME, Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory has remained in my top 5, it's one of my all time favourites, so kinda surprised to see it here.
SVC Chaos is an underrated game IMO, I like the in game character sprites, still waiting for Arcade Archive Neo Geo port on Xbox One.
I think it's inferior especially to the capcom vs series it looks and feels way off
I don't think it's ever coming.
It's not underrated at all. Game has been properly rated by the community:
It's a game with interesting gameplay and design ideas, dragged down by a very rushed and conflictive development.
It's VERY unbalanced, it has a lot of really stupid crap that shouldn't be there (as if the game didn't go through any beta testing), heavy recycling from the SNK side (without any update), 50% of the backgrounds were horrible, the music was forgettable... and I could go on.
@@TheTrueBro looks like an unbalanced mugen
@@s.t.houtdoorsnz.1454 this just means it's begging for the homebrew and modding scene to go in and do amazing things to it.
I just wanted to say thanks for your contribution to my entertainment. Your work is appreciated! Cheers
Much appreciated!
I actually loved SVC Chaos. I thought it was super cool to see SF characters in that art style. You're right though it's far from perfect. Felt dated even when it was released
it was so broken in the arcades. U could never get past round 2 or 3. But man was it fun as a pvp game.
@@jessragan6714 dreamcast version was perfect
Wow, hold on there. Some of that B-roll footage at the end looked intriguing. Akuma fighting some guy with a sword. Some googling later and apparently that's SNK Chaos? Neat. Accidental new game discovery. :-P
Excellent video as usual SLX. I would love to see a Megadrive edition! Keep up the fantastic work 👍🏾
I'd definitely like to see you do another episode with game consoles. Great video!
Donkey Kong 3 is pretty fun in my book. As a weird shooter instead of a platformer, it's definitely different, but I never regret giving it a play. Could use one or two more stages, though.
Yeah I like DK3 a lot more than at least junior.
I got this on Famicom
Rastan 2 and arcade castlevania look so much alike in regards of how chunky the gfx are and how slow they play, that it is as if the same team developed them...
LOL Did they also make Sword of Sodan? What's up with bad fantasy, action platformers where the warrior looks constipated?
Nice video! I definitely would like to see a video about weak console entries!
Great topic! I didn't expect to see SVC Chaos here, since so many people don't even know it existed. Decent game game but OH BOY are those boss fights a little too much.
very original video. You are very creative. I would love to see an expansion on this series.
It's usually the other way round' when the Arcade game comes to console it's usually a let down in some cases. I enjoyed it and would subscribe for more of these videos. You're the best segalordx!
Mortal Kombat 4 broke my heart
Played it once and that was it
Funny enough I have a fondness for the characters and would love to see them return
@@SegaLordX my 10 year old, the absolute savage, said you should "git gud"
(He only plays Mario Maker online)
Gradius was named "Nemesis" in the arcade.
A console version of this would be great. Fantastic as always SLX!
70s and 80s were a Great time to grow up with Video Games.
I always loved the theme of DK3. In the jungle, trying to knock him into a beehive, while swatting away all the other jungle bugs. Makes perfect sense in a game about fighting a giant gorilla.
I've literally never heard of the Burger Time sequel! Guess it was for a good reason, I'll be sticking to the Game Boy sequel methinks...
Being born in the 70's myself we are the generation were we have seen gaming in diapers to what we are experiencing right now, what a time to be born!!!
Great video as always man. I’d love to see more videos on this topic or similar.
at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffet.
LOL, you're doing the Lord's work.
Hook me up 👍
Great video! Someone made a patch to greatly improve the slow down on Metal Slug 2. Would it be MS 3 is on the MS X engine with the order they were released?
6:00 - Always was amused by that walk cycle - looks like he either shit his pants or is trying to avoid shitting his pants.
I actually liked Donkey Kong 3. As a kid I was bad at the original, but i could get past the first 3 stages of the arcade game of Donkey Kong 3. So i have a soft spot for it.
Great vid! would love to see the console and handheld topic as well!
Absolutely would love more from this series. Totally agree with most everything on here.
Such a fantastic time to witness the rise of a new entertainment medium, sad younger generations don't get this treatment.
Every second day something new to discover, loved it and still miss those days where gaming was pure nerd stuff.
I love Donkey Kong 3. 😍
It's not as good as 1 & 2, but it's a nice little game in its own right.
It's not a bad game by any means, but quite different from the first 2.
I can play it any day, and do play it from time to time on my Switch.
Thanks for the video Lordy, a little diversion into topics other than Sega is cool! SEEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAA!
Glad you enjoyed!
Yeah turning Donkey Kong into a Galaga-type shooter is odd. Might be a great game but like you said, don't make it Donkey Kong.
Heh never thought about VF that way... if they skipped the Kids version, they could have been working on VF3... thus all VF games would be pushed up in the schedule and... we might have VF6 now. 😩
HAHA... "Bad turn down garbage lane."
Am I the only guy who has never been able to keep 'Rastan' and 'Rygar' straight? I never know which is which.
Loved SvC Chaos, it stood apart on its own two legs from the other games.
Simon looks like he gained alot weight from eating at the buffet in that game
I have a honorable mention for this list, Ikari Warriors 3. There series went from beloved shoot 'em up to abysmal wierd eight way rotation joystick of death that had an insatiable appetite for tour hard earned quarters. There is no "A" for effort for that game.
When it comes to the arcades, I stick with my shoot'em ups, fighting games, beat'em ups, Pac-Man and Dig Dug.
Great video!! I 100% agree with VF kids and SVC Chaos! I would also like to confirm Rastan 2's status as a major letdown and major turd!!..IMO...😄👍
I wonder how long it took them to come up with the concepts for that one.
the nintendo playstation!
Great video Sega! I really enjoyed this! Arcades were amazing back then but I believe everyone wasted some coins on some garbage lol!
12:05 Pac-Man predicts the backrooms.
i do remember seeing a professor pac-man once when i was a kid. i read once that only 400 were made for a test to see if they would do good & if so more would of been made but luckily it failed miserably so no more were made & around 200 of those test cabs were converted to pac-land.
Regarding Donkey Kong 3: Hey, Nintendo had to do SOMETHING with all that leftover Radarscope code!
Haunted Castle was tough as nails, and where Mario's gun been everytime Bowser broke into his house and stole Peach
You could flip it and do a video for Strong/Best Console entries from Sega Arcade Games.
You have so a set of skills in what you do to deliver weekly 💯
Keep it real Sega Lord X 🤘😁👌
Great idea! Keep it coming please.
Great video couldn’t agree with you anymore about the games you picked.
Donkey Kong III had you blasting the titular ape in the nads with pesticide. It's little wonder it flopped.
No thanks!
the super mario 2 key guy!!
SVCC was cool to see Capcom characters as SNK sprites, plus some of the vs. dialogs were fun. The aging hardware showed, though.
When it comes to home consoles, computers, and handheld sequels of IPs that began their life on arcades, I can think of:
Super Monkey Ball Adventure (yes, the series began as Monkey Ball on the arcade)
Super Double Dragon (ironically, there are technically two different fourth installments; this being the earlier one)
Tekken 4 (not necessarily unplayable, but there were unpopular decisions made with it)
Dead or Alive 6 (likely killed the series)
Bloody War 4 (killed the series)
Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite ("Who cares about the X-Men?! They're just features!")
Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns (thankfully retconed by the real Strider 2)
Street Fighter V (vanilla release version)
The King of Fighters XII
Samurai Shodown Zen
Space Harrier 2
Mortal Kombat Armageddon
Soul Calibur 5 (nearly killed the series and Patroklos himself causes the original timeline to have a literal bad ending)
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z
Cruis'n (2007)
Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation (not all that bad, but not as good as some of the past installments)
Ace Combat Assault Horizon
Bubble Bobble Revolution
Paperboy 2
Cruis'n Wii was originally The Fast and The Furious arcade.
I completely forgot about Virtua Fighter Kids. Who was that made for?
Professor Pac Man sounds like something from the Simpsons back in the day lol
Thank you segalordx great work Sir
Thank you kindly.
I remember reading somewhere that the point of VF Kids was facial animation exercise for AM2 but ended up turning the exercise into a whole game (VF Kids).
They said similar with Funky Head Boxers, another incredible waste of developer resources.
@@SegaLordX considering they they animations were sprite based while 3D was clearly the future, yeah, I can definitely see that point. It wouldn’t necessarily help that much with animating in 3D for the likes of VF3 and Shenmue.
Yeah loved it mate keep em coming.
Watching the DK3 section I was thinking to myself "That's a lot like Galaga", then BAM, you said it.

Fun fact; there is an obscure game that takes place in the same universe as the arcade installments of Punch-Out. It's literally called Arm Wrestling.

very cool to see diferent tastes. for me and many people in Brazil, SVC chaos was the best one of all. kof was and still is big here.
